I don't say it lightly. Your channel has been one of my best discoveries on this platform. Ever. And I've discovered so many great books and authors by your inspiration. Thank you.
I agree 100% about ebooks. You don't own them and they can disappear in an instant. This applies to music and movies as well. While I love my ereader for the convenience, I mainly use it for re-reading books I already have in physical format. Congratulations on the library! I am terrible at choosing colors. But for those who are better at that sort of thing, it would help to see the color of the walls, furniture, and floors. That will give people a better idea of how things might look.
Greetings Vashik, in regards to paint, I believe people have been recommending dark green for the shelves because of the low light. I'm unsure what time of day you filmed this, or if there are windows with natural lighting when the sun is high. But from what I can see, the current lightness of the beige bounces the little light there is in that room. Usually this is what we want to accomplish-- to create more light, but instead of casts strange shadows and instead of making the area brighter and more open, it feels rather yellowed and dingy. My strongest recommendation would to not be too dramatic and use an off white with hints of pink to cancel the yellowness. Benjamin Moore Alabaster would complement a wooden bookshelf and go on very naturally. Although we all assume white as boring, from my own research and experience, the result is always satisfying. I like the smoothness of an eggshell finish but not sure what you're looking for in regards to your books. Its a classic and traditional choice!
Thank you Vashik. I couldn't agree more. I had a very similar thought concerning the library catalogues of big institutions. Some years ago I bought a second-hand copy of a very rare book, a well-known 'dissident' text, and when it appeared it turned out to be a copy being sold off (dumped?) by the Wellcome Trust's library. The book disappears, there's no gap on the on-line catalogue, and no-one knows that there used to be a book there between the remaining books, unless they know the subject very well indeed. The writer of this book, H C Bastian, was, in his day, well-known, but now no-one has heard of him. I know. I keep asking booksellers if they have any titles by him and they have never heard of him. He has been written out of the history books, like many other writers. A propos the colour of your shelves, what's wrong with the wood, as it is now? My shelves are mostly raw pine, simply because there's np room for me to remove all the books and paint the wood! I loved Horace's poem, have not read a word by him before, will look him out.
Sherwin-Williams Tradewind SW 6218 is a beautiful blue blue that blends and will work well with all your books and feel great during all seasons. I don't know if you can get it where you're from, but that's my suggestion. BTW, I loved the poem. Thanks for sharing.
It's so great to see you back, Vashik! What a gorgeous view of your books and library! I watched Jared´s video a week ago, and it made total sense. Thank you for bringing this topic of discussion to your subscribers.Regarding a color for your library, what about a color that inspires and calms. I saw a beautiful home library in a magazine and the color was "Ethereal Blue by Edward Bulmer Paint"
Nice to see you again. [sorry for the long post] Call me paranoid, but, we had some hard rains here and I do live in the capitol, on the 3rd floor and am relativelly safe, BUT, when it got really rainy, I looked at my bookshelves and understood one very important thing and that is, that, in case of an emergency, I would not be able to save all my books and journals. My solution is easy, in German speaking literary world, we have small editions of almost all books from the publishing house "Reclam", they are mostly yellow, red for English books and there are other colors too. I seriously am thinking of putting together something of a literar canon of certain amount of books, that would fit in a rather large satchel and or bag I can carry with me fast, the same I would do with my journals, I could also put my journals in a safe somewhere, but I am not megalomaniac enough to do that, also, most journal entries are not that important to be fair, especially the first ones, since they were very sporadic. My question to you dear friend, what would enter your "Literary Canon" of small edition books (btw small, means small in size and not as in smaller version with fewer pages, I made the mistake to buy some of those shortened novels and I gave them away, because, why would I buy them on purpose, I bought them out of ignorance, but hey, I learned from my mistake). In my case, "1984" would be a necessaty, also Kafka, since Kafka was also forbidden in the Sovjet Union and Communist/Socialist countries, Huxley, then certain philosophers, the good thing is that "reclam" also has a whole collection of an "introduction into philophy" from Ancient Philosophy up until modern day philosophy. The last thing I want also to do is create a List of all the books I have, this will be a huge undergoing, but I guess it will also be fun and it will take long. Concerning your bookshelves, I can only speak for myself, I would use dark soft brown, but add to that good lamps which allow the room not have enoug light, so that during the day, I would have enough light, so that I would not get tired, but there is something very calming about cliche dark brown libraries, I think they would go well with some kind of Green, to bring in some "nature" but, AGAIN that would be my taste. One tip, just google "libraries" and see which color makes you feel better the worst, if you have an Ikea, walk through the rooms and see which one makes you feel best, or walk through an old libraries. Very important is also, modern books do not have all the leather boundings, some spines are far to colorful for my taste, especially because they match better with white shelves than with dark brown shelves. So the color of the spines of the books should also be part of your choice process, at least, they are part of mine :)
I have many hundreds of beautiful physical books, but Ebooks allow me to acquire books I could otherwise never have acquired. Online you can find everything you want. My ebook collection is huge, more than 80.000 items, and I DO own them. Even if I could afford them in paper, I would never be able to store them in my apartment. I have several backups of my collection that I keep in different places. None of my e-books is linked to untrustworthy corporations like Amazon. I do not buy e-books from such organizations.
I have a vision that all antique libraries are dark brown ! I don't know why but I noticed that most public libraries use this color for their beautiful shelves . Thank you for your wonderful channel .
Ebooks, like any digital content on platforms, such as iTunes, and Amazon digital movies, etc, it not truly owned. You only purchase an access license to the content from the provider. And yes, they can and do change their minds for various reasons and content will be edited or removed from devices completely! Always purchase physical media. You own that item outright and forever, with no concern of licenses or removal. BTW, love that band, Molchat Doma!
Welcome back, Vashik! It's great to see you again and hear your thoughts-this time about e-books. I completely share your point of view: a tangible book will always be unique and irreplaceable. Regarding the color of your library, I feel it’s complete as it is. After all, the true color of a library is in its books. I think it’s perfect the way it is. Enjoy, and continue sharing the wisdom of your collection with us!!!
Totally agree, for all the reasons you state. The same applies to 'emusic'. I like a particularly obscure avant garde band. I've got my favourite vinyl album of theirs, but their albums, despite their artistic merit, have never been transferred to a digital medium. Though some of their better tracks are currently available on RUclips. I assume at some time in the future they will 'cease to exist'. Very sad. I also believe some of the less popular books and music will be delisted and, despite their artistic merit, will 'cease to exist'.
Fascinating (and concerning). Clearly explained. Thank you : ) Regarding the colour of the wood paneling for your bookshelf, I'm not going to suggest a colour. I think researching and looking at books about home libraries, going to country estates (National Trust) with home libraries, and/or looking online at images of home libraries etc might be best. I say this because, I believe, when you see the colour, you'll just know. Everyone may suggest green, but, for example, for you, a deep shade of red may bring you more joy. Anyway, I look forward to seeing the colour you eventually choose.
I often think that dark colours are so somber. Would you consider something brighter to reflect the joy it is to have such a library with the mind-opening jewels of knowledge it contains. I suggest Farrow & Ball’s “Borrowed Light”, not just a brighter colour but also a great name for the paint colour to use in a library.
Due to lack of space, unfortunately I can’t buy new books…and I had to sell loads 😭 however, I can use my local library. PS: regarding Kindle, I’ve never used it. How would they edit or delete a book I’ve purchased, if I choose to download it? Just wondering! Thanks for the video 🎉
Consider using a high-pigment stain on the wood for your shelves to keep the grain visible but create a rich, dark color. If you decide to do that, I would consider doing it to the walls as well, if the small section of wall at the left edge of the video is what the whole room looks like.
I love this video and your insight. Thank you for saying what needed to be said.🫶🏼 One color that you might want to consider for your bookshelf is a bluish-slate color; with an emphasis on more bluish than slate. When you said that you wanted to paint your bookshelf, I didn't know that it was unfinished. It looks nice as it is but of course we all know now since you told us. Whatever color you choose should also reflect the rest of the room. Since we cannot see the rest of the room and floor, I would tend to go with something neutral like blues, browns, and grays.
If you are leaning towards green, the color of the cover of your copy of Tolstoy’s Recollections, visible at the end of the video, would be nice. I think dark green would soak up all the light in the room and make a poor contrast between you and the shelves in your videos. Personally, I would paint the shelves a rich cream color, elegant and classic, and would show off your books.
I have a love/hate relationship with ebooks. For the reasons you mentioned I hate them but the possibility to change the size of the characters or the convenience of having a huge heavy book in a small portable device is sometimes mandatory for me to keep on reading it. I may buy one or two a year and usually it's after I received the physical book and I realize the fond and weight are a hinderance to my reading. I really like dark green, like a dark forest or emerald green or dark blue with the same saturation, I don't remember the name of the color in English sorry.
1. This calls for a library tour video my friend. 2. It is hard to say what color to recommend without knowing lightsources and your personal preference, if we stay with green and the room is bright RAL 6028 or 6012 if its dark RAL 6011 or 6021 3. The Mediapocalypse has just begun, our first AI's where the eathquake and sadly a lot of people now run down the beaches in curious childish ignorance looking and wondering "where'd the water go?" not knowing that the Tsunami is already forming on the horizont ... soon EVERIYTHING digital will be worthless. The only way Humans will be able to tell that some media, be that Books, movies, music, Art, is uncorrupted and unchanged will be physical copys produced up to a certain point in time where there was no AI.
It's not "ebooks", it's "licensed ebooks that are locked to a particular device" (Kindle, Kobo, etc) Non-DRM'ed epubs are arguably more resilient than physical books. (You can equally say "Why Arsonists Love Physical Books")
Editing classics is what the big five have been doing in America for about a century. He mentioned companies doing this like Amazon. This isn't unique to dictators.

As a fellow booktuber I really appreciate your courage to talk about these issues. I’m a physical book reader myself.

pretty much the plot of 1984, fahrenheit 451, a brave new world... I personally own several translations of certain books because of this too.
