My daughter works in live theatre. This sets such a HUGE precedent for any stage performance.
Smith SHOULD have said only "I was wrong, no one should strike anyone on stage" a thousand times over. But instead, he actually tried to justify himself and make excuses.
It also was so egotistical for him to not only get up there shamelessly, but to yack about himself and how "offended" he had been, and take away that moment from the other people involved in the film who will probably never have that level of acknowledgment for their work again.
My daughter and I both noticed that the night of the event, the tech people BTS put a logo screen over Smith's visual, multiple times. They only stopped doing that after he gave his pitiful excuse for an apology. The Academy was NOT comfortable with letting him speak. They probably assumed he would do the polite thing and stay off stage to hand the time on screen to his cast and crew. But they forgot about his ego.

I think the laughing was a continuation of the jokes Chris had said previously. Chris busts out a lot of back-to-back jokes, so it's possible the mood of the room was in nonstop laugh mode. When it finally clicked with Will that the last joke was on his wife, a switch flipped. I could be wrong. Regardless, I think it's pretty evident something is not right in that marriage. And what's up with Willow, she is always dressed so mysterious in cloaks with hoods and dark glasses and shit? Like a cleric or a thief character from Dungeons and Dragons.

I’m 6’8” 300lbs and can say that big guys are very aware of size in a confrontation. I was actually bullied relentlessly in school because the smaller guys knew that I couldn’t do anything about it. I still struggle with the trauma of that from the 90s. Will Smith absolutely knew, even in the heat of the moment, that he was attacking someone he could have seriously hurt. The slap wasn’t an attempt to hurt Rock, but it was absolutely an assertion of dominance over a smaller man. Sometimes all it takes is a push or a faint to exert this dominance, and bullying almost never includes violent actions that seriously injure the smaller person-that’s not typically the goal of a bully. What we saw at the Oscars was Will Smith bullying Chris Rock in a very familiar way to most smaller folks. The assertion that it was harmless because it was “only a slap” is ridiculous.

      WONDER WHY WILLY WENT WACKO?!
This is what I believe happened to Will (I know this because it happened to the friend of my father's uncle's in-law! 😜). Knowing that Jada sleeps around, as she had revealed to him, that she slept with her own child's friend aughh...🤒😰 (sorry that part gives me the hibi jibis 😏🙄), Will's mind is now roaming to imagine who else she had slept with, that she is not telling him. Knowing that Chris and Jada worked together for a long time, away from Will, on Madagascar 1, 2 and 3. Chris becomes more suspect! Will must have cooped up and nursed a conviction in his head that Chris must have also had a piece of his promiscuous wife's pudding. So, when he saw Jada's reaction at the Oscars, he finally convinced himself that they definitely made out! That caused the regrettable outburst!

What bothered me most about the moment when Will Smith approached Chris Rock onstage was that he looked very deliberate. He looked like someone who is used to hitting people and perhaps has the attitude that they deserve it.
He didn't get up on that stage with any intention other than hitting Rock. He wasn't looking to grab the mic and bite back with banter, engage in an argument, or demand an apology for his wife.
Then he turned his back on Rock and walked away. That was a display of power, a belief that there would be no accountability. He didn't stay to engage Rock in an argument, didn't expect him to hit Smith back, didn't show any surprise or unsettlement over his actions in the aftermath. People who are not accustomed to employing physical violence might lose their temper and hit someone, but they tend to react when they realize they've done it. They also don't usually get up from their seat, walk up steps and cross a stage to do it in the first place.
Thank you for talking about the other ramifications of that incident. If I had been receiving an award that night, I don't think I could have refrained from condemning Smith's action while I had the stage. I was shocked that so many went on like nothing had happened.

I didn't love or hate Will Smith before but he seemed like a good guy. Mostly pretty good funny movies. Have never watched a dramatic performance by him so can't comment on him being "Oscar worthy". But I went from not hating him to hating him in that split second. Should never have been allowed to stay and that standing ovation was disgusting. Became a HUGE Chris Rock fan in that same moment.

As Dana said he was 5' tall when he started high school. I was 4'9"! I also had social anxiety (still do) which caused me to avoid going to my locker where all the people were. So all of my books were in my backpack, the weight of which caused me to hunch a bit. So I was basically this short hunchback that was an extremely easy target for bullying. One kid even stole my backpack, burned it and threw it in a swamp. Claimed he was teaching me a lesson for keeping everything in my backpack at once.

David, I’ve always thought you were the coolest and funniest guy! I don’t want to make you feel old but I’ve adored you since I was little. Some of my best memories are watching your movies and laughing my ass off. Tommy Boy with my dad. The Emperor’s New Groove with my brother. And just recently the 2nd Transylvania movie with my son. Feels good to hear your voice, especially standing up for Chris Rock. ❤️

Jim Carey said it best Hollyweird is Spineless...Since when does the Villian become the Victim and the Victim become the Villian...
Chris Rock is a comedian and his job is to tell jokes good or bad it's just freaking jokes...Where was Jada's feelings hurt after she has been caught by numerous camera angles laughing at Will's assault on Chris...Her behind wasn't focused on her Alopecia then... It's NOT about the Alopecia it was about WHO had the jokes, if the jokes came from August then it wouldn't have been an issue... Narcissism at it's finest...
Much Love, respect and honor to the way Chris Rock has, is and will continue to handle this situation...🤔

100% Jada is a virulent narcissist. She could not stand the attention being put on Will. She found a way to put it on her. Will was wrong but Jada 100% caused his reaction due to her horrid narcissism.

I am sorry for all whom get bullied in their young lives.
David and Dana you are both brilliant, as well as Chris Rock.
I completely felt as though what Will Smith did was such a cowardly act. I do not understand anyone in the audience giving Will Smith a standing ovation? It was horrific, appalling, uncalled for, and obscene.
Chris Rock was an ultimate professional.
Will Smith was an ultimate crazy eyed person shouting out stuff like you would see in a back alley….not in an ornately packed theater full of beautifully dressed, award winning celebrities. I mean come on…….when is this crap going to stop? I hope in my lifetime as I am pushing into my late 60’s, and having lived through a once moderately polite society at one time.
For all you performers out there on stage, are you kinda scared about people like Will Smith coming after you?
What has become of us? It is just mind boggling to me that no one came up to Chris Rock to make sure he was okay. The cameras just kept rolling. To make matters more dramatic; the cameras were focusing on Will Smith and his wandering Wanda of a wife Jada. Chris Rocks brilliant statement, “Well this was the best moment in television history.” He nailed it, didn’t he?!”
Thank you David Spade and Dana Carvey, for your voice of truth and compassion here. I know it wasn’t easy for you guys to talk about being bullied in your lives. Your voices and wisdom matter especially to a grandmother of a boy that is smaller in stature whom I worry about. I love this boy with all my heart in a world that has changed so much, and that I am not sure I like very much right now. To all the Will Smiths in the world I just have no words, but I would implore you to use your words and not your hands. HANDS ARE NOT FOR HURTING. This was on a refrigerator magnet that was in plain sight front and center whilst my children were growing up. Maybe it should make a comeback for everyone’s fridge👍

I know Will Smith talked about his dad beating his mom when he was younger, and him feeling bad about not being able to "protect her." So I saw something in his childhood coming up, especially since Regina Hall had mentioned Jada earlier but go no such treatment. I hope he seeks counseling and comes to realize it was never his job to protect his mother and deals with this legacy of violence from his father. I'm glad Chris Rock , your friend, is okay. There's a moment in the video where he clenches his fist like he is going to hit back, and then he puts his hands behind his back and I thought back to this very podcast where he talked about how he feared he had killed a kid once (and obviously I hope that fear of being angry would never keep him from defending himself if he were in real danger) but I thought it was good that he was more in control of himself and aware enough to diffuse the moment and not turn it into a brawl.
So sorry to think that David and Dana were also victims of violence as children. It's a real stain on our culture.

Hated seeing a person being hit in an unexpected encounter, reminded me of childhood, turned my guts and I felt Chris’s spirit buckle for a moment. Like I hope the demons didn’t sneak back into Chris’s head, he was literally attacked by a bully in front the whole school,…and a few billion viewers. I guess Jada wanted Wills night to be all about her.

Well said guys. What came to my mind immediately after it was the time Chris guested on your podcast. The part when Chris spoke of being bullied but also the time he turned and retaliated with beating that bully badly with a pillowcase with brick thing. And how years later with therapy it allowed him to own his shit and work on that anger problem as it really messed with him for years. As you know and heard. So I’m in no doubt that had he not done the work, he would’ve likely smacked Will right back, being triggered to retaliate in anger. Bravo for that, I admire Chris so much. What a wonderful human he was in the moment, it was crushing to watch him though, knowing it would’ve brought up so much in that moment, exposed to the world and I’d say deeply hurt too, yet stayed calm with a strong composure. I shared that 3 min excerpt of that podcast on social media and of course I got back ‘so being bullied makes it ok to bully Will?’ MWhat the actual… I was such a huge WS fan too, I went off him instantly. He needs to do the work too and own his shit. Chris has a massive supportive team that love him and thank goodness for that.

not the same " bully", he got comforted from those hollywood A list elite after he slap someone, and standing ovation 15 mins later. your high school "bully" will get kicked out ,suspended, strip of whatever title or maybe arrested. so Yeah , power and money do get you different treatment.

I'm so glad you guys talked about this from a comedian and friend standpoint. I completely agree with everything! What happened was a bully knowing he would get away with it due to size and status level in Hollywood. If that were Snoop or The Rock, basically anyone his size or bigger, Will Smith would've kept on sitting. Chris Rock handled himself so well! Will Smith's "apology" is faker than his marriage!
What happened to this podcast on RUclips? Can you bring it back on this channel?

I bet Chris Rock felt a little alone, considering everyone in the room gave Will Smith a standing ovation by the end of the night. Even comedians like Tiffany Haddish didn't have his back. I just hope he knows how much he's loved. Twitter popped off with pro-Will Smith tweets, but it made me realize most of Chris’ supporters aren't maniacs fighting on Twitter. We are people that recognize a violent act when we see it and appreciate comedy. I know Chris will be okay, just hope he knows that millions love him.
Everyone that gave Will Smith a standing ovation needs to look in the mirror and question themselves. They saw someone get assaulted and applauded the offender. Gross.
