Thanks a million for posting this. I have often tried to explain to my wife the exhilaration of sailing hot-rod dinghies like the 505 but it's really hard to get across. This video captures it perfectly! Of course, when I showed it to her she said, "so you ENJOYED that?! (she can't swim a lick and hates boats). "They crashed! Why are they laughing?", she asked, incredulously, "it's raining!" (like that matters on a 505!). I learned to sail O'Day Sprites on Massachusetts lakes as a kid and crewed on lots of keel boats but the "raciest" boat I'd ever crewed was a Soling. I'd never sailed anything like a high-performance dinghy. Then one day I'm standing on the harbor jetty in Santa Cruz, CA and this "old" dude (probably about 40) sails up single-handed in a 505, noticed my appreciation and asked me, "you know how to sail?" I said, "sure, but not that thing." He said, "don't worry, you'll be crew. You just have to follow my direction and handle the lines. You'll do fine!" We get clear of the harbor and he hands me this vest/harness thing and says, "OK, put this on." Huh? "What's this for?", "that hooks you to the trap," he says. "The 'trap'? What's that?". You can see where this is going. I wound up having the funnest/scariest time ever on the water. I must have drunk half the Pacific, laughing while getting slammed into the chop. Thank God the guy was a master at handling the 505 and a great teacher. It later occurred to me that finding - and keeping - crew for these bad boys must be tough. I was young, strong, agile and stupid so I was a perfect fit (in those days). Some great memories! Thanks, again.

Glad it brought back memories! I had a blast with the boat in Marblehead/Newport RI during the summer then St Pete in the winter. I've since sold it to a younger sailor, but it was a fun ride.

@@zackmarks181131 Reminds me of 420 days, I was far to small and light for a five-o.

Hi…. Great video. I had a five-0 1996 to 1999… .I repaired it. Used a Needlespar mast and Proctor boom… ..you could get it to really bend. All used bits. Then I bought a ripped ISO Asymmetric and pole from a storm right off…. Made a hole in the bow with fibre- glass reinforced… local car body shop did it… She went like a rocket........ Very twitchy was always losing my crew….. Great memory and your video brought it all back. Sold it to a French sailing club…. "C'est la vie".

How the hell they got the boat 45 degrees up in the air and 90 degrees to their direction of travel, the mind boggles. Now, I've wiped out in dinghies to class1, but not experienced that. Great footage, in challenging conditions.
Love how the recover and get going again. Interestin how they have an asymmetric spinnkaer, constrains how deep they can sail.

I like it compared to the double pole. Way less rigging on the boat. As a matter of fact about 40 less fittings on the boat. All you have is spin halyard, sheets, tack line, and bowsprit. Actually in non planing conditions you can ease the tack line and sheet and create nice separation between the main and the spin. It can rotate far to windward. Wing on wing could also be any option though we never tried it.

Yes. It is a fixed carbon bowsprit designed by Waterat. I bolted it to the side of the boat and drilled a hole in the bow so that I could anchor the bobstay.

We were trying to push it but we clearly were not trimmed well. Although it is windy. We were raked all the way back. I think our next step would have been to lift up the centerboard with the lifting pin (not rigged at the time). Your right though. If you are easing out past the corner you should rake more or lift up the board. If you've already done all that I think the next step is to ease the vang and twist the sail so you can bring it to the corner.

    Lots of good questions.
I only use the bow launcher. I think that this boat was a bag boat originally but all 505s that are racing are using a launcher. Some people have a side launcher.
You can end up running over that sail if you don't douse quick enough.
Yes this sail has the same area as the LLspin so that we could compare the performance. It was designed by North Sails in St Pete.

I was racing them in 1967 - 1969 in the UK . The launcher was introduced sometime around then as the first boat did not have one.
