Love your list. The Oregon Ryes you've got in there are excellent (thanks for sharing 😉), and so is your Driftless Glen pick. It would definitely make my top 10 for Ryes for 2023 as well.
That Driftless Glenn was really good,I just killed that Trails End 10 Year last night,a friend and I put it up against my Stagg and we both liked the Trails End a little better and that's saying something.🥃
We seem cursed to always miss Oregon Whiskey Fest. It's right in our backyard, but something comes up every year. Maybe 2024 will be our year, because it seems like a lot of fun.
I’ve been looking forward to this. I wish we got these in Indiana. I have had the Still Austin and of course Hard Truth and both were good. Will be looking for the Conoley when I go to NC. Cheers! 🥃
Where is the Sagamore 8 Year? I poped my bottle on NY and was blown away. Definately my #1 rye ever. I see that JC at Mash and Drum chose it as his #1 Rye for 2023.
I wasn't sure about rye whiskeys but last night tried Bulleit bourbon 10 yr high rye(28%) side by side with Pikesville Straight Rye(51%) and really liked them. I'm sure your list has bottles with a lot more rye but I wanted to start in the shallow end of the rye pool to start. Glad I didn't waste my $.
It's funny that some high ryes display bourbon qualities and some low rye mash bills have very little in common with bourbon. We honestly don't pay that much attention. If it hits our palate and we love it, that's good enough for us.
I sampled Bhakta 1928 on Black Friday and thought it was great. The founder of Whistle Pig started Bhakta. They have multiple varieties, if you get the chance it's worth a try.
Hard Truth’s Sweet Mash rye is great! I really want that Jack Daniels Barrel Proof rye, just need to keep looking. In the meantime, I’ll keep sipping on my Old Overholt 114.
Certainly agreed on the Frey Ranch. We had them on our previous 2 Rye lists over the past 2 years. Really wish we had seen the Sag 8 this year. It sounds wonderful.
We are *NSYNC with our #1 rye of the year!! That Michters toasted rye is my favorite rye from 2023. The JD twice barreled did not sit right with me. Mine was not very good. Cheers
You guys are still missing out on Corbin Cash. They are also a farm/distiller putting out fantastic rye. They are located in central California. Let me know if you want me to send a sample.
@@TheBourbonVan Yea! We're doing a road trip there the end of March. Looking forward to trying their 10yr single barrel sweet potato spirit that they are supposed to be releasing soon.
I believe the JD SBBF Rye is the only one on the list that is widely available, NOT allocated or regional/local. Between Old Forester Rye, Wild Turkey’s 101 Rye and Rare Breed Rye, and this JD, those are my “can’t miss” widely available ryes that I consider under-valued, that is, costing way less than what’s in the bottle. This is your particular list for ryes this year-I get it. I may even go hunting for the NC bottle… But I just wanted to make the point that for anyone playing the undervalued & available game, those are my three picks. 😊
We can definitely appreciate that. Our lists have changed considerably along with the voice of our channel. Given that we travel so much and try to shine a light on smaller distilleries, our lists are going to continue to look a little different than most others. That said, Old Forester Rye, WT 101 Rye, Pikesville, Michter's Straight Rye, and Old Overholt 114 continue to be our top 5 can't miss ryes that are always on our shelf.
I have to say I thoroughly enjoy rye. With that said I think you get more terroir with rye than bourbon. Don’t get me wrong you get terroir with bourbon, but it seems to me rye is just at another level.
There are a lot of thoughts on this one, starting with the quality of vermouth and other ingredients. We'd probably recommend something with a sturdy backbone like Wild Turkey 101 Rye, Knob Creek Rye or Rittenhouse Bottled in Bond. We also like Michter's for mixing, but that's a little pricy. It has a big flavor profile, so the whiskey doesn't get lost in the other ingredients. Hope that helps!
You need at least ONE Sagamore in there cmon now lol. They proved to be the best rye producer in the country. So many great rye products. I know you can’t try everything, but to do a best rye of the year video, you must seek out a few of their ryes or explain why you are excluding them. The Sagamore 8 year would destroy many of your top 10’s, or any of their finished ryes. I have a Sagamore 7 year store pick that is to die for. Not one Sag product!?!? Still a great video guys.
We love Sagamore Spirit, and we've had their products on our list every year until now. We only add items we've gotten our hands on in the current year, and we didn't acquire any in our travels in 2023. Sagamore products are made in Maryland, we're based in Oregon, and the 8 Year didn't make it to our state.
That Driftless Glenn is one of their best!
Nice list! Glad to see Still Austin on there. They are putting out some nice offerings. Cheers, Julie & Phil!
Jack Daniels twice barreled Special Release Heritage Barrel Rye is Awesome 😊. My go to rye is Pikesville 110.
We love that Pikesville. It's always on our shelf.
Gross. Whats everyones obsession with pikesville. It tastes like a moldy basement
Hope you can get over to Mendocino County, CA and try the products of Low Gap/Mendocino Distillery just north of Ukiah, CA.
Interesting - thank you for the recommendation. We're passing through that area in August and we'll have a look!
I love JDCS rye. I generally ad a few cc of water to tame it down just a bit. Here in Tennessee it's $20 higher than Oregon!
Great list! My fave is Woodinville cask strength rye. Real character and not too sweet.
My favorite was Pikesville rye
That’s a beautiful whiskey.
Love your list. The Oregon Ryes you've got in there are excellent (thanks for sharing 😉), and so is your Driftless Glen pick. It would definitely make my top 10 for Ryes for 2023 as well.
We've shared that Driftless Glen pick with everybody who comes through. It's such a satisfying, unique sip. One glass of that goes a long way.
I did revisit jd sb bp rye from last year my bottle was so good the third time around!!!!
That Driftless Glenn was really good,I just killed that Trails End 10 Year last night,a friend and I put it up against my Stagg and we both liked the Trails End a little better and that's saying something.🥃
That's a huge endorsement. Thanks so much, Frank!
@@TheBourbonVan My friend who is better at picking out tasting notes than I am said the same so it wasn't me being a fan boy .😁
So glad I was able to grab that Oregon Spirits bottle at the Oregon Whiskey Fest. Cheers

If you can find the Canadian Lot 40 give it a try!! It’s a lovely 95/5 rye so almost all rye and a very nice spice which I love!! Cheers!
Try Redemption High Rye bourbon and their rye aged in rum casks
@@mdw1000 Redemption Rye is terrific!
@@mdw1000 I tried the Redemption H R and thought it wasn't too shabby and on sale for $25.

Great list guys! Some I have never tried so that’s even better!
Thanks, Kurt! We love shining a light on those deserving distilleries we discover in our travels.
They all sound so good.
Hard Truth’s Sweet Mash rye is great! I really want that Jack Daniels Barrel Proof rye, just need to keep looking. In the meantime, I’ll keep sipping on my Old Overholt 114.
I love a good rye whiskey. And being from Indiana, I will need to try the first one you talk about.
Try the Hard Truth Sweet MashHigh road rye . Really nice 👍
Thanks. I will look for that one.@@aglastlead7170
Only thing I’d add is any Frey ranch rye single barrel or Sagamore 8 year
Certainly agreed on the Frey Ranch. We had them on our previous 2 Rye lists over the past 2 years. Really wish we had seen the Sag 8 this year. It sounds wonderful.
I have a driftless glen single barrel that tastes like it has a jalapeño in the bottle…but in a unique good way!
We have a Stonebarn Rye that has that same note and we love it, especially as it balances out the dark chocolate on the palate.
We are *NSYNC with our #1 rye of the year!! That Michters toasted rye is my favorite rye from 2023. The JD twice barreled did not sit right with me. Mine was not very good. Cheers
Old forester single barrel, barrel strength rye is out of this world!
Still Austin you find this in OR. ?
Found in Nevada or Washington. We make a trip to Reno every year to buy anything with Still Austin’s name on it.
Thank you, I'll look next time in NV. WA to many taxes ! never a good experience in WA state. Great channel, cheers....

Ryetastic and candytastic: two words I plan on using more often.
It really surprised me that the Templeton 10 year did not make this list.
We only add bottles we were able to acquire. If we only had samples, we didn’t add them.
Still Austin is killing it!,
That Michter's is no joke.
47 for the Jack Rye? what a steal. my goodness

We feel the same about American Single Malts. We've never experienced such an array of flavors that are totally dependent on the terroir.
I was looking for a rye to mix with Manhatten's. Anything that comes to mind in the $25 to $40 price range?
There are a lot of thoughts on this one, starting with the quality of vermouth and other ingredients. Alberta Premium CASK strength, yes out of Canada, yes great Rye, I've been getting it at $30 with four or five back ups.
