Easily one of the most thrilling swim races I have ever seen. So often swimming looks like an 8 athlete time trial. But this one looked like a real race. The unstoppable champion chased down in the home stretch by the gutsy speedy underdog who would not give in and just accept the silver medal. Great race.
Watch Lezak's finish in the 4x100 free relay back in 2008. Same type of vibe as this one. They were both losing by a significant margin and made a miraculous comeback.
Maya is amazing! My daughters swam on the same club team as her. I did computers with her dad and her mom was an official. The whole family is amazing. Not only is she super talented, super smart and beautiful, shes one of the sweetest people in the world.
guitta Dabe some said she only smiled because the camera was on her and she saw herself on the big screen, she's greatly disappointed, dirados reaction was more beautiful, she couldn't stop smiling and tearing up as well, during the medal as well
Agreed. Of course she was disappointed, the whole reason these athletes go to Olympics is to win a medal for their countries, if its Gold, the better. She showed good sportsmanship, unlike certain swimmers who went out of their way to make others (more)miserable than they already felt. I felt so proud of Maya since she was my favorite swimmer for Team USA and beating Katinka is not impossible, but its incredibly hard to do so. She went out with a Bang! and I'm happy for her. Katinka has been a machine in the world cup so far, she's the Iron Lady for a reason!
Since this was Dirado's last ever swim in her career she put everything she had into that final 25m since she was retiring after the Olympics and it paid off.
this is my favorite only because Dirado beat the Iron Lady. and to think she was only trailing the whole race ...good for you Maya......Rock n Roll to the World....
It's crazy how many times finishes and timing your stroke decides medals. Look at Phelps like 4 races that have been decided by .09 or less. The one with Crocker, Le clos, Cavic etc he wins or loses on finishes.
Maya Dirado is amazing and it's awesome how she beat the Iron Lady! I met Maya Dirado and she was really humble and nice. She even signed some of the items I gave her! If you get to meet her, you're really lucky. She's really tall in person.
I don't have the knowledge to recognize what a skillful swimmer she has always been, but here in her home town among swimmers, she was known as outstanding. Hard work & great attitude/family support = American-type champion.
yes, but the Iron Lady have at this time 3x Gold in Rio and swimm much more race then all other. She was little tired at the end. But the US.Lady have also deserve a gold medal, have also swim good in the other categorys this Hosszu wins.
Hosszu started spinning the last 25. She took 7 strokes from the flags to Dirado's 5. It reminds me of how Alain Bernard tightened the last lap of the historic 4x100 free relay. Missy should have easily won this by well over a second; same with Seebohm. I hope they get their mojo back soon.
Suzi M Phelps won 23 golds, winning the 400 IM by 6 sec in Beijing. Abnormal arm span implying the use of human growth hormone. But of coz you won't find him suspicious because he is an American like you!
One wild Friday night: First Dirado. Then the Phelps/Le Clos/Cseh three-way tie for silver in the 100 (Plus Singapore's first gold ever with J. Schooling). Then 35 year old Anthony Ervin wins the 50. Then Katie Ledecky wins the 800 by like 200 metres😊. Crazy
let's just appreciate the zimbabwean lady, she followed 4 olympics with 2 golds, 4 silvers, and 1 bronze medal and always qualified for the final while in swimming most of the medalists can no longer compete with younger swimmers with stronger stamina and better techniques in the next olympic event
Katinka Hosszú time results: Heat: 2:06:09 Semifinal: 2:06:03 Final: 2:06:05 Three, almost identical performances. Maya DiRado time results: Heat: 2:08:60 Semifinal: 2:07:53 Final: 2:05:99 First more than 1 second development, then 1.5 seconds... Between your first and third swims it developed 2.6 seconds! 😑😑 I think clean conditions evolved so much... 😂😂 Olympic = Servant of the United States of America! 😠😠😎😎
Dirado went 2:06.90 at the Olympic Trials a month prior to the Olympics. She simply timed her races better at the Games by saving her energy until the final instead going fast on all three races like Hosszu did.
I'm 11. I'm on the swim team. I'm the best backstroker on my team and the area. My time our first meet was 37.90 on a 50 yard backstroke. I wanna go to the Olympics when I'm old enough.
Dj Sparkles is there no age limit for olympics? I'm 22 yrs old and recently started swimming. I love to swim and wish to practice enough to be capable for olympics. What are the other competitions that i should participate in? There's not much awareness about sports in my country.
Backstroke is my favourite but the most challenging part is the turn because you have to know a count form the flags and have to leave space for an arm pull and well done everyone!
I think the big question here, is whether or not Hosszu will be at the Fina World Swimming Championships this month? Dirado will not, but this Championship Swim by her was just great, and her reaction was pure Gold. The tears from her made me smile, and I also was tearing up. This race was and all of the other swim finals swam in Rio was almost a year ago. Where did the time go?
6:57 Look at the Hungarian. She was so reluctant to congratulate Maya and could only muster to smile weakly and even move away. *shakes head* So glad that Maya took the gold!
Well, I would be VERY very very disappointed for sure but I certainly didn't know this was the way to show disappointment. It was as if she was showing disdain to Maya.
They're great obviously, but I don't think they're in her class. The only swimmers in Eger's class are Fraser and Ledecky. Perhaps Gould and Caulkins to a lesser extent and as for peak swims Meagher and Evans. But Egerszeki is the most underrated all-time great in the pool.
So rio Olympic have wall sighting flags for backstrokers. But not in Japan or any other past olympics! Do you think guys think is fair and not against the rules?
guitta Dabe i agree Hosszu was a good sport, and while they don't show it here, I remember at the time of the olympics, her husband/trainer was like fuming. He should take after katinka more. But go both of you!!!

You and I do not watch swimming the same way
So not only is she an Olympic champion, she’s hella smart too. Amazing.👏🏻👏🏻
Lolli Polli01 yea. How does one become an olympic swimmer and got degrees in engineering, finance and science in the meantime? Jeez
Who?
She is one of my heroes. What an amazing person! I wish i had met her in person before she retired from professional swimming.
@@r0sy67 She is also a good & balanced person. She is indeed amazing.

Beautiful reaction by Hosszu, smiling though she got upset at literally the last second. Great sportsmanship by the Iron Lady!

guitta Dabe Her initial reaction was disappointment
of course she messed it up at the last turn circle swim that cost the victory, hard to lose like that
this is my favorite only because Dirado beat the Iron Lady. and to think she was only trailing the whole race ...good for you Maya......Rock n Roll to the World....
She's been called that in all her races by the commentators. I don't know when she picked up the nickname.
Because she participates in some hardcore mid-long and long races on female's side.
Latoja Montes+ Katie Ledecky is the Vibranium woman! (Yes I know vibranium is not real, I'm not a dumbass)

Agus Leaves the a top
I’m still learning how starts can affect a a lot and this really proves it
That's why I'm better at executing good turns, starts, and finishes, but I'm not as good at actually swimming 😂
Ok so I’m not a bad swimmer but my turns and underwater work are trash so naturally I dominate in long course
I love the way the commentators say Dirado's name at the end of the race

It's just so heartbreaking that Missy didn't make the final :(

Candace Lei agreed all the wayyy
Where is her dope test report ???
What happened to Missy ?

I'm team USA but man was I cheering for katinka every time she swam!
She's amazing
She's a cheat.
she beat americans so she cheats. phelps wins so many golds becoz he trains hard. typical american logic.

A child of immigrants, Maya Dirado. 2 years later, still makes me smile 😊
It's a beautiful style in this race from katinka and maya

What a swim by dirado . Love the way she finished ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful Mikee. ..
great swim and finish from Maya
This was my favourite race of the rio Olympics along side 50mts Anthony Earvin gold.
I grew up swimming with her on the all star teams! It’s still crazy to this day 🤯
😂😂😂
This is the best race of this olympics

Dirado is a brilliant back-striker, and it showed in the 200.
@6:46 the sister who is lowkey annoyed that she'll always be the underachiever sibling.
I feel her tho 😔
Maya did it soooo well she won cos of her finish.
great finish by DiRado. it took a perfect lunge to out touch the iron lady. well deserved!

Jack Weger Hope you saw how Katinka did at Worlds before a hometown crowd in Budapest... Swimswam.com has the details.
Hosszu is great. She will down as one of the greatest female swimmers ever.
I just came here to watch these amazing women.
Amazing!!!!
One of the best moments in the championship swimming history!
Great video! Magnificent effort by Maya! Really enjoyed the announcers, John and Nicole.
6:57 Look at the Hungarian. She was so reluctant to congratulate Maya and could only muster to smile weakly and even move away. *shakes head*
So glad that Maya took the gold!
Desmond P T are you saying you wouldn't be disappointed to win silver by tenths of a second after a winning streak?
Well, I would be VERY very very disappointed for sure but I certainly didn't know this was the way to show disappointment. It was as if she was showing disdain to Maya.
I saw it differently. She even smiled. I saw nothing but good sportsmanship from the Iron Lady.
Desmond P T I would be thankful that I made it to the finals in the olympics
Revisiting this 12 Aug 2017
Im so proud to be hungarian tho at times like this hosszu 👏🏼👏🏼
So great endurance all of lady swimmer on championship at this moment...So proud, you're all the winner actually
The water was sooo calm before they jumped in ☹
Good Job
Maya DiRado
Felicidades 🎉🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏👏
What great racing of Maya!!!!!
Wonderful performance congratulations 🙏
This channel is my favorite
great endurance from DiRado in the last 50, congrats
Krisztina Egerszegi actually beat the commentator Nicole Livingstone in 2 of those finals (Nicole didn't make the final in '96)
Egerszegi is an incredible backstroker. Up there with Hosszu and Missy as greatest ever.
Yo hago natación y estas chicas son geniales
Absolutely Awesome!
top demais adoro natação!
Just got home from my swim meet and I can’t even
Sawyer Peterson same
i’ve meet kirsty coventry!
my coach was her coach
race starts at 4:30
why do you have to have a body part above water when you reach for the finish?
Otherwise people would just do dolphin kicks underwater, which isn’t really backstroke
US swim team we’re dominant during 2016 but this was such a massive upset. Nobody beat Hosszu, it was just unheard of.
it made me cry at the end !😥
Awesome swim Dirado. Awesome!
The race start at 3:48
Give this comment a thumbs up if you are so proud of these swimmers
Wow reminded me in 08 with the men's when they beat France even tho that was a medley
6:03 -
*Is it possible to do Quick Turn in the form of Backstroke still? (Not turning body to like Freestyle...)*
yes you can touch the wall and turn that's the old turn
amazing race :)
Humble athletes usually beat the arrogant one. I love Dirado here.
Fantastic...
Katinka Hosszu ❤
139 Stanford students/graduates have won gold medals throughout Olympic history. Only USC has more gold medalists.
9:04 The way she said dirado tho xDDD btw hi MIKEEEE
You rock Maya. =)
Final cardiaco e impresionante.
I just feel watching US TV coverage on this event because the commentator mentioned Dirado so much
What a stunner she is, Maya DiRado.
Unbelievable Race! Sad for Hosszu .
Maya made it like a magic! Like God touch the finish line for her
11:13 very nice of Hosszu.
Dirado upsets Hosszu and Canada grabbing the bronze. Great race!
MAYAAA!!!!!
The actual meet starts at 4:32
The Hungarian just chocked T.Brady style
She stayed underwater too long after her last touch of the wall. That took all of her energy out.
Maya just was faster the last 50.........happens all the time........
I can’t wait to see the 2022 winter Olympic Games events and the 2024 summer Olympic Games events
Love pain to see the pain in the face of a cocky swimmer/coach who gets put in their place, well done Maya!
What a great battle
So rio Olympic have wall sighting flags for backstrokers. But not in Japan or any other past olympics! Do you think guys think is fair and not against the rules?
9:16 its mikee cojuangco from the philippines.
What energy system is being used mostly here?
Is it anaerobic or aerobic?
I was really looking forward to see Missy Franklin race for a medal, but what happened to her...
Injuries
Anna Chang She didn't make the finals.
She had back issues
i love swimming
Kosszu better underwater , Dirado better stroke (more lean forward)
Go Belinda!
This race became my proof to my coaches why I should lunge on the final stroke instead of the simple touch
I love you dirado
Felt so bad for hosszu she was in lead the entire team.
Maravilloso...
