Never missed a show. Loved every installment. Dan is one guy that will not allow a vehicle to leave his shop without it being One Hundred Percent Visually and Safety Certified. And; thanks for serving our country! Much Respect from a Navy Tin Can Sailor DD878 1969-1973.
Bull crap !!!!! That guy butchered a really nice c20. Truck came in with windshield chrome and left without chrome. Said he had his best window guy on it. I seen that show twice just to make sure I really seen what I thought happened. That guy was an absolute joke. Shit salesman with a sample in his mouth.
I am a very old 'gear head' from the 50s-60s. Worked on more cars that I can remember in my 50 year career as a mechanic. I always found his show interesting and informative. I am sorry to see it off the TV.
I very much enjoyed it too. The shop is 5 miles down the road from my house in Norfolk and the guy lives in my subdivision, but i have not met him. I have however spotted him driving an Aston Martin Rapide down the main feeder street in our neighborhood and I do believe he waved back when i thumbed up the car.
This was my favorite show on Velocity. No bs car restoration, with real life labor & parts costs revealed. Loved the fact that most of the cars were restored back to original condition. No crazy modifications or giant wheels with skinny rubber around them.
I like the way he brought technicians into his shop, and, after setting their course, let them work! He was there for the big decisions, but for the most part, he trusted them to do the right thing. That’s leadership.

I'm a retired Army officer and the first time I saw FantomWorks, I told my wife, "That guy's former military, probably SF." He talks and acts like a soldier; what you see is what you get. I DVR'd every episode and still watch them from time to time. Glad he's back doing what he loves and enjoying (almost) every minute of it.
FantomWorks was by far the most realistic car restoration show ever produced. You could feel the burn & frustration at each 'discovery' Dan and his team would encounter during the restoration process. I will miss this show but I'm glad Dan is back to a more healthy love for restoring old cars.
This was honestly one of my favorite shows. Dan was as REAL as can be and wasn’t fake . I’m glad he is still doing the business even without the show..
@Beelzebot like most of these type of shows, the film companies try to make drama, where there is none, never understood this concept. But the problem I had with this show was Dan himself, never took to the man, but that's life.
@Beelzebot where was he a drama queen? I would say Rawlings fits that title better. As per Consul 62 production companies create the drama's out of nothing. I loved this show.
I enjoyed watching Fantomworks because of the cars and the workmanship. I couldn't care less about the drama. Seems to me that any real workplace that I have been in has had it's share of drama, anyway.
They didn't know wtf they were doing, and still don't. You ever see the episode where they cut up and welded a perfectly good valvecover, so it would clear the alternator? Big fabrication bucks expense for car owner. All they had to do is 're-clock' the alternator. I'd NEVER let them touch my car. Some of them were pretty good. But not some of the so called 'mechanics'. Dan is no gift to mechanics, either. A loudmouthed, foulmouth......
I have nothing but respect for Dan Short and his crew. He was brutally honest with his clients and his work cannot be faulted. Hard to do in any business. Best wishes for him and his family.
Took the tour of Dan’s shop while my friend and I were at an Army reunion. Didn’t know Dan was Army retired until our visit. I believe it cost us 10 bucks for the tour. Bar none, best $10 tour I have ever had. One of the staff talked to us for probably 40 minutes in the same break area where the TV program was filmed. Then Dan came in and spent another few minutes with us answering questions before the tour. I can tell you that Dan is EXACTLY the same person in real life as on TV, except there was no bleeps. He personally took us on the tour, and it was terrific. I’m a sadly addicted Hot Rodder and had a GREAT time. After the tour, we went back to the break area and spend quite bit more time with Dan. He posed with us individually for photos. I even bought one of his T shirts and he signed it. Another $10 bucks. I live in hot rod T shirts and NO ONE will match that deal. Dan explained some of the reason for walking away from the show, and his explanation was a bit different than has been presented here, but it certainly makes sense. Being a celebrity is always at a huge price, and if you have to put up with it..... it better be to make a lot of money. I will miss Fantom Works because it was a RARE real life program, without individuals having to act and not having invented drama. Thanks Dan and your crew...... Would love to do some business with you, but I unfortunately live over 2300 miles away. I still watch the reruns when they are on. I will miss your series.

Same thing here! Dan sat with me and my wife for nearly an hour after the tour as we talked about how we owned our small education business, and we talked about the pride and difficulties of running a business. Dan truly is a man of his word and a genuine person. Unfortunately, he posted a bit ago that they are no longer doing tours :(

I really liked the fact that Dans show was the only one that talked about money. It’s important for folks to appreciate what it costs to rebuild their heirloom POS.
His show was pretty good,but there is some bad car shows on motor trend tv.not to mention they are showing crap from past ,which i am paying exorbitant cable fees to see reruns
It was kinda sad watching lower middle class owners getting so attached to their cars that they were ok'ing work that seemed to put them in the hole by tens of thousands of dollars. I liked my first car, a '66 VW, but I'm not going to dig myself into a financial pit when Dan hands me a bill for $52k. Dan's off the hook since he tells you to your face how much it's going to cost. Maybe when there's a camera in your grill, you feel like you have to say yes.
I am retired Military as well but I didn't know of Dan's DoD background until today. Now I can fully understand and appreciate his straight forward approach and his demand for excellence. well said I am a 70 year young retired US Army Vet living now in the Philippines and yes Dan was a hard ass sometimes but he had to be and it was a great show
One of the episodes it was very lightly mentioned (customer was a vet and they did extra stuff for less money because of the history etc) that’s legit all I remember of the episode 😂

Fandom Works was one of my all time favorite shows, and I still enjoy watching the reruns. I didn’t realize they were no longer filming new episodes. Thank you Dan for the shows he did make. Will definitely miss seeing new shows. Good luck to his future business though. A fan from Ohio.
This was the one show that was true to the reality of restoring classic cars. Which was why it was my favorite show anyway. Never doubted Dan's integrity, his attitude sometimes was completely understandable, and kudo's for the guys who worked in the shop and performed the work!
The man was and is a straight-up Petrol Head, with high standards, integrity and passion. Things America doesn't understand anymore. God Bless you and yours Dan!
As a vet of working in shops like Dan's shop, this was one of the most realistic shows in the "reality car show" list. I really did enjoy Dan somewhat unpolished and straight up view of things. He had some very interesting an real world examples of being bitten by what you don't know :) But he had some very good work turned out despite the challenges. I miss the show but I get what he says about why he walked away from it. Thanks Dan for the good times. The family enjoyed them all
So glad that Dan’s business is still thriving, yes I miss the show a great deal, but the work of the standard he and his team were producing does not need the extra pressure of TV crews around.
Dan Short and Dave Kindig restored my belief in American quality. I loved their shows, Richard Rawlings, (Fast & Loud) not so much. He reminds me of a used car salesman.
Agree. Fan time works was one of the few who weren’t trying to rip ppl off by trying to put paint over rusted out heaps and screw over potential buyers. Fantom Works actually seemed to do real work. Think this was by far the best show on tv.
Agreed! Me too! Great show! I can understand the stress that TV crews placed on the business. Still, I miss it badly in 2022. There are only so many repeats I can watch! Dan is an honest guy and his attention to detail and quality has been outstanding!
I walked to his shop today….no more cars out front and his signs and awnings are all falling apart. They don’t do tours anymore but his office girl let me take some pictures from the sidewalk looking inside the shop. Dan was busy working on a yellow Camaro and I got the strong impression he wants nothing to do with casual visitors. I get it that TV filming sucked him dry, but I truly loved the show and respect the hell out of his business. I wish he would let us car guys tour his cool shop. Don’t be angry at us car guys Dan….we get it !!!
Fantomworks was my favorite show on Velocity because Dan's a NO BULLSHIT Army vet & perfectionist. And as he said many times, no car will leave my shop if it's not safe.
I liked the fact that they listed just how long the car had been in the shop. People see a car built in one episode but don’t realize it might have taken over a year to finish. Good job Dan, the show will be missed

Been a diesel truck mechanic for 50 years. Retired now. I remember a sign at a dealership that read Labor rate $65 a hour. $100 a hour if you want to watch.
Old signs, old roll cab stickers, the old calendars...... The days before Political Correctness was taken seriously, and those that did take it seriously would laugh out loud at those that "predicted" its outcome would be what our current woke one is, weren't any farther from a "better society", in general, than we are today. I used to watch the shows and really enjoyed Dan’s honesty and straight talking- whether to his staff or customers.the finished work was of very high quality.I never questioned his integrity. Good luck to him and his great staff without the tv crew adding extra pressure to a stressful business. Thanks Dan.
I agree also with Dans decisions, he choose the success of his business. He kept the talent of his crew and chose his life ambition, he enjoys what he does and is very good at it. I watched the show and it was a good show.
@@rocknrik it wasn't scripted. I work for him now. He's an amazingly smart man. And ive heard the horror stories of the huge production crew being in the way. We work 40 hour weeks now and love every second of what we do. Im as amazed with the talent he has working for him now as i was with the crew he had then. Every one of these people are at the top of their game.
@@matthewsmith1941 I have a 69 Lincoln Continental Mark 3 and could only hope that when it comes time to restore it, I come across a shop like Dan's that tells it like it is, no matter how hard it is to hear. At the same time, I don't wanna get screwed because I've heard the horror stories! Right now I'm a 51 yr old father of 4 going to school, about to start a new career in the medical field and have to wait to have work done on my car. When I do though, I need the work done right, especially if I want to pass it on to my 14 yr old son eventually. I don't need all the glitz and glamour as seen from Kindig-it(not saying they're work isn't good), It just seems like a place like Fantomworks will give it to you hard and real for the everyday working man and do it right! I know it'll cost too because I know Lincoln's are a pain in the ass, but a price can't be put on safety and quality work!

I always appreciate Dan’s integrity. He was straightforward with his clients, didn’t over promise, was honest about costs, and most importantly, never compromised on safety.

He never insulted his workers; he insisted - sometimes most forcefully - that they bring the full weight of their skills to EACH project. Even a good excuse is just an excuse. He accepted no excuses.
The show was not cancelled in the network operations sense. If you'd had the patience to watch the needlessly lenghty 28 minute video, you would have noticed that the shop owner decided to discontinue his filming deal. No cancellation.
This is one of my favorite restoration shows. I'm going to miss the show because of the work and the interaction between staff as they produced some truly beautiful cars. Dan's shop is one of only two shops I presently believe I would let build a full restoration build for me. I will definitely miss the show, but maybe I'll go to Norfolk with something in tow for Dan to restomod for me.
I'm sorry to hear FantomWorks came to an end. Dan and his crew always put on a wonderful and interesting show. He always told it like it was. He also served his country well in the military. Thanks for your service Dan. Your show will be missed.
I admire him for not gloating about his 24 year military career, and being a green beret. Much more humble than a guy serving a 2 or 4 year stint in the military and acting like he's a full blown war veteran.

Most of the guys that invaded Normandy did a 2 to 4 year stint. The problem is not only with the veterans, but with the government and the insane amount of veterans because of the limitless funds that went into "defense".
This never fails. It seems like every time TV breaks its way into a business like this and turns into a reality show, the business suffers greatly at the expense of the business people are amused. Pass the word, keep Hollywood out of your business. It will kill you!
You're correct. Let see how many shows have failed because of tv show interference. Orange County Choppers, Gas Monkey Garage, Hot Rods ( Boyd Coddington) there are more but these are a few .
The greatest quote I have ever heard on TV was Dan Short, after giving one of his mechanics a task and the man standing and scratching his head (trying to figure out how he was supposed to do what he had been tasked with): "He's only scratching his head to give his balls a rest." Dead serious - he said it and it got on the air.
Dan's attention to detail sharpened my own "perfectionism." When I watched the show, I wished I could do some of the things his shop did, like fabrication of pieces to complete projects. I have since learned how to weld and with my "handed down" skills from my detail oriented dad (who always said... "If you're gonna do that, you might as well do it right the first time"). So, I learned to fabricate and do repairs I wouldn't have considered before, like replacing the firewall & many panels in my 1966 Mustang. And I am proud to say all my joint seams look better than they ever did from the factory. As an aside, I started my own channel on RUclips, called Restoration Shop (because I learned a lot from Dan Short's videos), but I quickly found as a single person doing all the repairs that it took me 5 times as long if not more, when re-recording videos. Thus, I resorted to taking documenting photos (1000's of them), recording the evidence of things I knew & wanted to share in performing my own restorations and repairs; however, most of the documenting of my labors has not seen video production for my channel because it's just so time consuming. One day I'll post the many photos in respective videos on each topic so that others could learn from my efforts. I am after all a science teacher in my daily job, but I'm nearing retirement from that "hobby" so I can get back to the other work I still love to do.
I liked this show and I still watch the reruns. I can understand why he ended the show. It's like having someone constantly looking over your shoulder.
I would let Dan and his crew restore a car for me anytime. It appears that he always insists on doing things the "right way". When he would go over the hours spent on the job, I usually felt the hours were more than reasonable. His crew are real artists and am sad that he may have lost a quality artist due to the stress of production. Anyone that has actually bee involved with restoration and fabrication, they would understand the labor that goes into one of these builds. And if you are attempting to restore a rare car and are looking for quality parts, it is a very difficult and time consuming task.
Exactly true. The amounts charged by other shows require the clientele to have far more money than brains. His prices, although seemingly high are extremely reasonable.
I met Dan at SEMA and he was exactly the same as he was on the show; extremely knowledgeable about everything car related. It is sad how greed and stress can ruin a good thing. I still watch the reruns and will miss the show.
As an Aussie I loved watching Fantomworks and disappointed that it’s no longer made but I fully understand the reasons and I have to say it was the best automotive series and Dan easily came across as the best bloke!
I am sad to see the show go. But I can understand the daily stress on Dan and his crew. As you said, their love is rebuilding and restoring some very awesome cars and trucks. This is about the only show of this type that I would eagerly look forward to seeing. Again, will greatly miss it. Thanks.
This has long been one of my favorite shows on Speed/Velocity. Always enjoyed the episodes amd their craftsmenship- just some amazing, quality work done at Fantomworks. Sorry it's off the air but I can certainly understand how a show could interfere w/the shop's overall performance.

Also It shows how good he is when helped the Young Man who had the yellow International Scout by doing some xtra work on his truck to help him out after being shafted by a previous so called garage work on his truck . The Young Man was in the Military . Dan and his crew did an awesome job on the Scout . If I currently had a classic and needed work done , Fantom works would be my choice to do the restoration . Plus I am in Hampton Roads , Va. , Glad Dan has his business here ✌️

I am the owner of 3 "fantomworks vehicles, the flame spitting 72 Cadillac Funeral Hearse, the70 Chrysler Hurst 300 and the curious yellow 71 sport fury. The work I recieved on these vehicles was sub standard. Simply PUT : NO QUALITY CONTROL ! Example: 3 cars had hVAC issues. These were repaired and working when they were picked up. They worked for approx 5 months now all are broken again. Interior work on the hearse was horrible. The air ride suspension on the hearse failed 2 weeks after I picked it up and got it home only to be returned to Fantomworks on my dime (500.00 each way ) I certainly would not recomend this shop. I considered a lawsuit and it wasn't because Dan Short has deep pockets. It's because he allowed substandard and sometimes illegal and dangerous work to leave his shop. Again: NO QUALITY CONTROL. The producers of the show were notified and were not surprised as they saw it happen several times.
Will surely miss Dan and crew. This was one great show., and I have no idea about automotive restoration, period! Glad Dan had the balls to take his company out of the lime light. I’ll miss you Dan and the guys. You kept me interested for hours on end. If I ever get to Norfolk, I plan on stopping in just tell Dan “he’s the best”.
I loved this show it seemed very genuine and raw at times. It’s difficult to ran a business when dealing with so many distractions . Dan was always cared more about the cars than the customer’s do. Bringing them back to better than new is hard when having so many different people working on it
I’m gonna miss Dan and the Crew. They are the only real car customization show on TV. I wish you good luck Dan and hope you have many more years of success and happiness in the art you and your Crew create.

Although I will miss seeing what Dan and his crew turn out, I am glad that they are going back to their roots and not closing shop. Long live Fantom Works! i always appreciated when he would present the bill to the client and he would talk about the cost. Folks just have no idea how much it actually costs to restore a classic. I have been building my own hot rods for many years and have always appreciated the talents of others. There was a few times that some thing or another that was bugging me how to do something in my own garage and lo and behold, the answer was presented in his show. How kool was that? I am a retired federal agent and building hot rods was a stress relief. I cannot imagine how much stress he and the entire crew sustained. I'm glad that they have returned to normal and I wish him and his crew the best of luck!
MIss Dan and his crew…fantastic work, almost impossible to comprehend the quality of his completed work…I would definitely consider his shop for any restoration project that I may have in the future…good luck Mr. Dan, and more importantly, thank you for your service to America!!

My parents thought it was best that I run bowling machines at 11 an 12 years old an took me out of school. So no I'm not good at spelling but I try an the only thing I do best is work on cars which I've done for 40 yrs so if you want to make fun of me I dont care. I miss Dan and his antics.I also liked hearing that he is partial to '67 Camaros,I've owned about a dozen of them.If Dan felt that he had to quit the show to save other aspects of his life,then by all means he made the right choice.It's very sad to hear that the show kept him away from his fathers final days...
I served in Iraq on three deployments as a 11B,11C Army and I have the greatest admiration for Dan Short for his no nonsense attitude for attention to detail.He also reminds me of my drill Sgt Savusa.I am proud to be in same group of Army veterans like Dan Short and my Brothers In Arms,Thank you Dan!!!!!

The man is a legend, his pride in his work and attention to detail was second to none. Amazing is the best word I can use to describe the show. Don't ever change Dan, as they say " you cant please all the people all the time ". UK viewer.
Dan and the guys worked SO hard to do their jobs while also being filmed, having camera crews everywhere, sound guys in the corner of the shop recording their every moment, and making the crew's job that much harder. It's GOT to be so hard to keep things going when your stress levels are through the roof. Thank you Dan for all of your hard earned efforts in providing us all with the level of entertainment that you and your crew brought to us. We can't tell you how much we loved the series.
Dan Short is like many of us who realized early on that a car was more than just transportation. There are millions of gear heads like me that work on their cars because they want to. The annoyance and frustration showed by Dan when things went south was honest and realistic. Parts are lost, parts cleaned don't fit, aftermarket parts don't work, etc., no matter how detailed one is, restoration is a journey with many ups and downs. Fortitude and persistent required. Fantomworks exposed that long journey in spades to us. Miss the show.
@@bb1518 Thanks for your comments. Restoration or resto mod work requires constant pre-fitting and refitting of parts. Aftermarket parts seldom can be used without tweaking and re-tweaking them, ad infinitum it seems. Perfection is an ideal; a level not held by manufacturers.
Sad to hear about all the down sides of this show, I can fully understand the pressures that Dan was under, having run my own business for over fifty years. I hope that Dan is able to keep his shop open and making money, I also hope his health hold up and he will be able to enjoy the years ahead at his own pace.
This was the best show I ever watched, and I know it was real due to how dan talked about each car, the detail, and how much stress he was under with each build. As someone who does something similar, hats off to you dan.
I'm a car guy, I restore and modify cars every day. FantomWorks was by far the most realistic car building show of them all, with the most time filmed of actually working on the cars. Counting Cars was the exact opposite, I couldn't stand that one but I looked forward to this one every week. It is missed, but it's understandable why Dan wanted out. Anyone in that position would.
I thought this was a great show. I tried to watch every episode. Dan's attitude about safety is what shows you a real guy. I hope he, his family, and his employees all prosper from here forward.
I stand 100% behind Dan Short, this was the BEST SHOW on the network and sad it couldnt stay on, he is a great person and it comes through on the show. We're with him 1000%.
I was amazed at Dan's empathy toward customers who experienced tragedy during the restoration of their vehicles. In one episode, Dan waved labor costs for a lady whose husband died before his early 50s black and white Buick. I will miss the show.
One of the best reality car shows on tv it’s to bad that the filming put that much pressure on the team. Sad to see it gone but happy to hear he is still in business and it’s thriving. Good luck in the future Dan.
Dan is a guy who is immediately likable. He cares....about his people, his product, and his customer(s). His military background was very apparent in his show and I personally loved his emotion which he showed. Being military myself, I always looked forward to watching his show with his guys because it reminded me so much of military teams which I have been a part of. I miss his show and all his guys. I am glad he has got his life back and he is doing what makes him and his family happy. Dan has given a lot in his life to a lot of people. As another role model of mine says...”Good for him!”
Was a decent show but I often felt Dan was being a bit more “dramatic” for the camera and going a bit overboard. How he racked up so much debt getting money from two sources is very odd.

If I were ever in a position to need a car restored, I would go to Dan. He has a heart of gold. He is a perfectionist. I trust him. I'm very pleased to know thst he is doing what he loves. He does not need the show. But I have enjoyed his show over the years. His health is most important. Best of luck to Dan.
Hey, if people think they're going to get a car restored to this degree without paying a lot of money, they are just delusional. It takes a lot of hours, and a lot of (probably)rare & expensive parts to restore these vehicles, if they aren't ready to spend that kind of money, they either need to try to do it themselves, or sell the car to someone else who has deeper pockets.
@@rustycowll5735 I once talked to a guy who owned a body shop who also did restorations. He said, "don't ever give an exact quote; just tell them you're going to keep track of the hours involved." One of the things I've noticed about the show is that Dan's always telling his crew, "keep track of your hours"--the first time I heard him say it, I immediately thought about that earlier conversation with the body shop owner, some years ago... lol
I also can attest to unfortunately learning how many leaches are out there. Ya work your ass off 20 hours a day on good faith, and there come the leaches. All they see are dollar signs, while the small business person has personal debt and long hours
Leaches. Yes. I know about them too. I installed floors for 20 yrs to get where i am. Every one thinks we just ride around and pick up checks. They dont see the long hours, hard labor, and when we measure 10 jobs to only get 2 of them. It takes a lot out of a person to run a small business.
What I liked about the show was Dans honesty he would tell you what he could do or not do based on what the customer wanted and he always got his own hands dirty unlike other shop owners who would just delegate their authority
So if they are paying YOU to film in your shop, how the hell do you get 1 million $ in debt? He does not seem to be a dumb business guy. Moral of this story; Want a good life, stay off of TV and Social Media.
He is not getting paid by the network or anybody for the filming. I live near by and took the tour of his shop, he does the tour himself and explains how everything works. He told us he gets no money for the filming....just the free advertising.

The show is still being aired for the second time in the U.K.. I am amazed at the skill of the team in producing excellent products better than the original manufacturer's models.
My husband & I were having a 1935 Cadillac restored when he first started watching Fantomworks. So many of the things Dan had to deal with we experienced as our car went through the process. Our restorer let my husband "help" in the process, something we did not see Dan do. We can understand why! Our shop was a much smaller operation and also did regular maintenance service for older daily drivers. When, as an owner, you can accept the fact that the work preformed on your car will be used by the public to judge the quality of the skill and integrity of the shop, you can better understand why the shop owner does not want to short cut any part of the project. As the owner you will be happier with the project in the long run if go with the suggestions of the reputable shop owner. We hope to visit Dan's shop some day to tell him how much we enjoyed his show.
Never missed a show. Loved every installment. Dan is one guy that will not allow a vehicle to leave his shop without it being One Hundred Percent Visually and Safety Certified. And; thanks for serving our country! Much Respect from a Navy Tin Can Sailor DD878 1969-1973.
Bull crap !!!!! That guy butchered a really nice c20. Truck came in with windshield chrome and left without chrome. Said he had his best window guy on it. I seen that show twice just to make sure I really seen what I thought happened. That guy was an absolute joke. Shit salesman with a sample in his mouth.
Injoy watching his shows. Mostly because he speaks what’s on his mind and doesn’t sugarcoat anything. I have old cars and get good ideas from him
I am a very old 'gear head' from the 50s-60s. Worked on more cars that I can remember in my 50 year career as a mechanic. I always found his show interesting and informative. I am sorry to see it off the TV.

I very much enjoyed it too. The shop is 5 miles down the road from my house in Norfolk and the guy lives in my subdivision, but i have not met him. I have however spotted him driving an Aston Martin Rapide down the main feeder street in our neighborhood and I do believe he waved back when i thumbed up the car.
Dan also related to me a real reality to this buisiness, it is real and tough. Thank You Dan

This was my favorite show on Velocity. No bs car restoration, with real life labor & parts costs revealed. Loved the fact that most of the cars were restored back to original condition. No crazy modifications or giant wheels with skinny rubber around them.
I admired him for including the reviews of his invoices with some of his customers.
I like the way he brought technicians into his shop, and, after setting their course, let them work! He was there for the big decisions, but for the most part, he trusted them to do the right thing. That’s leadership.

I'm a retired Army officer and the first time I saw FantomWorks, I told my wife, "That guy's former military, probably SF." He talks and acts like a soldier; what you see is what you get. I DVR'd every episode and still watch them from time to time. Glad he's back doing what he loves and enjoying (almost) every minute of it.

FantomWorks was by far the most realistic car restoration show ever produced. You could feel the burn & frustration at each 'discovery' Dan and his team would encounter during the restoration process. I will miss this show but I'm glad Dan is back to a more healthy love for restoring old cars.

@Beelzebot like most of these type of shows, the film companies try to make drama, where there is none, never understood this concept. But the problem I had with this show was Dan himself, never took to the man, but that's life.
@Beelzebot where was he a drama queen? I would say Rawlings fits that title better. As per Consul 62 production companies create the drama's out of nothing. I loved this show.
I enjoyed watching Fantomworks because of the cars and the workmanship. I couldn't care less about the drama. Seems to me that any real workplace that I have been in has had it's share of drama, anyway.
They didn't know wtf they were doing, and still don't. You ever see the episode where they cut up and welded a perfectly good valvecover, so it would clear the alternator? Big fabrication bucks expense for car owner. All they had to do is 're-clock' the alternator. I'd NEVER let them touch my car. Some of them were pretty good. But not some of the so called 'mechanics'. Dan is no gift to mechanics, either. A loudmouthed, foulmouth......

I have nothing but respect for Dan Short and his crew. He was brutally honest with his clients and his work cannot be faulted. Hard to do in any business. Best wishes for him and his family.
Took the tour of Dan’s shop while my friend and I were at an Army reunion. Didn’t know Dan was Army retired until our visit. I believe it cost us 10 bucks for the tour. Bar none, best $10 tour I have ever had. One of the staff talked to us for probably 40 minutes in the same break area where the TV program was filmed. Then Dan came in and spent another few minutes with us answering questions before the tour. I can tell you that Dan is EXACTLY the same person in real life as on TV, except there was no bleeps. He personally took us on the tour, and it was terrific. I’m a sadly addicted Hot Rodder and had a GREAT time. After the tour, we went back to the break area and spend quite bit more time with Dan. He posed with us individually for photos. I even bought one of his T shirts and he signed it. Another $10 bucks. I live in hot rod T shirts and NO ONE will match that deal. Dan explained some of the reason for walking away from the show, and his explanation was a bit different than has been presented here, but it certainly makes sense. Being a celebrity is always at a huge price, and if you have to put up with it..... it better be to make a lot of money. I will miss Fantom Works because it was a RARE real life program, without individuals having to act and not having invented drama. Thanks Dan and your crew...... Would love to do some business with you, but I unfortunately live over 2300 miles away. I still watch the reruns when they are on. I will miss your series.

Same thing here! Dan sat with me and my wife for nearly an hour after the tour as we talked about how we owned our small education business, and we talked about the pride and difficulties of running a business. Dan truly is a man of his word and a genuine person. Unfortunately, he posted a bit ago that they are no longer doing tours :(

I really liked the fact that Dans show was the only one that talked about money. It’s important for folks to appreciate what it costs to rebuild their heirloom POS.
His show was pretty good,but there is some bad car shows on motor trend tv.not to mention they are showing crap from past ,which i am paying exorbitant cable fees to see reruns

It was kinda sad watching lower middle class owners getting so attached to their cars that they were ok'ing work that seemed to put them in the hole by tens of thousands of dollars. I liked my first car, a '66 VW, but I'm not going to dig myself into a financial pit when Dan hands me a bill for $52k. Dan's off the hook since he tells you to your face how much it's going to cost. Maybe when there's a camera in your grill, you feel like you have to say yes.
They also spoke about how long it takes to do so much work to a car. Sometimes in the hundreds of days.
I loved the show. And i always enjoyed him letting you know how much it was to restore a vehicle. Most of the shows dont even tell you that.....
I am retired Military as well but I didn't know of Dan's DoD background until today. Now I can fully understand and appreciate his straight forward approach and his demand for excellence. well said I am a 70 year young retired US Army Vet living now in the Philippines and yes Dan was a hard ass sometimes but he had to be and it was a great show
One of the episodes it was very lightly mentioned (customer was a vet and they did extra stuff for less money because of the history etc) that’s legit all I remember of the episode 😂

Fandom Works was one of my all time favorite shows, and I still enjoy watching the reruns. I didn’t realize they were no longer filming new episodes. Thank you Dan for the shows he did make. Will definitely miss seeing new shows. Good luck to his future business though. A fan from Ohio.
This was the one show that was true to the reality of restoring classic cars. Which was why it was my favorite show anyway. Never doubted Dan's integrity, his attitude sometimes was completely understandable, and kudo's for the guys who worked in the shop and performed the work!
The man was and is a straight-up Petrol Head, with high standards, integrity and passion. Things America doesn't understand anymore. God Bless you and yours Dan!

As a vet of working in shops like Dan's shop, this was one of the most realistic shows in the "reality car show" list. I really did enjoy Dan somewhat unpolished and straight up view of things. He had some very interesting an real world examples of being bitten by what you don't know :) But he had some very good work turned out despite the challenges. I miss the show but I get what he says about why he walked away from it. Thanks Dan for the good times. The family enjoyed them all

Dan Short and Dave Kindig restored my belief in American quality. I loved their shows, Richard Rawlings, (Fast & Loud) not so much. He reminds me of a used car salesman.

Agree. Fan time works was one of the few who weren’t trying to rip ppl off by trying to put paint over rusted out heaps and screw over potential buyers. Fantom Works actually seemed to do real work. Think this was by far the best show on tv.

I walked to his shop today….no more cars out front and his signs and awnings are all falling apart. They don’t do tours anymore but his office girl let me take some pictures from the sidewalk looking inside the shop. Dan was busy working on a yellow Camaro and I got the strong impression he wants nothing to do with casual visitors. I get it that TV filming sucked him dry, but I truly loved the show and respect the hell out of his business. I wish he would let us car guys tour his cool shop. Don’t be angry at us car guys Dan….we get it !!!
Fantomworks was my favorite show on Velocity because Dan's a NO BULLSHIT Army vet & perfectionist. And as he said many times, no car will leave my shop if it's not safe.

Been a diesel truck mechanic for 50 years. Retired now. I remember a sign at a dealership that read Labor rate $65 a hour. $100 a hour if you want to watch.
......and $150 an hour if you worked on it first!

I used to watch the shows and really enjoyed Dan’s honesty and straight talking- whether to his staff or customers.the finished work was of very high quality.I never questioned his integrity. I totally agree with what Dan did to save his buisiness and keep his crew together as they all had too much to lose by continuing with the show .
I agree also with Dans decisions, he choose the success of his business. He kept the talent of his crew and chose his life ambition, he enjoys what he does and is very good at it. I watched the show and it was a good show.
To me it was the most realistic reality show about cars on tv. It's not always a bed of roses, you occasionally get stuck by a thorn.

@@rocknrik it wasn't scripted. I work for him now. He's an amazingly smart man. And ive heard the horror stories of the huge production crew being in the way. We work 40 hour weeks now and love every second of what we do. Im as amazed with the talent he has working for him now as i was with the crew he had then. Every one of these people are at the top of their game.
@@matthewsmith1941 I have a 69 Lincoln Continental Mark 3 and could only hope that when it comes time to restore it, I come across a shop like Dan's that tells it like it is, no matter how hard it is to hear. At the same time, I don't wanna get screwed because I've heard the horror stories! Right now I'm a 51 yr old father of 4 going to school, about to start a new career in the medical field and have to wait to have work done on my car. When I do though, I need the work done right, especially if I want to pass it on to my 14 yr old son eventually. I don't need all the glitz and glamour as seen from Kindig-it(not saying they're work isn't good), It just seems like a place like Fantomworks will give it to you hard and real for the everyday working man and do it right! I know it'll cost too because I know Lincoln's are a pain in the ass, but a price can't be put on safety and quality work!

You just can't replace honesty. Dan kept it real and I still watch the reruns knowing that this show still shows how much people love this show.
Demanding the best yet fair to his techs is/was Dan's management style. Had to ask for anything above that.
Doing anything in front of the camera has to be hell. I'm glad to see that he survived and is still going strong.
I always appreciate Dan’s integrity. He was straightforward with his clients, didn’t over promise, was honest about costs, and most importantly, never compromised on safety.

I had no idea that the show was cancelled, I really like it, Dan (and his crew) did great work with even better results.
The show was not cancelled in the network operations sense. If you'd had the patience to watch the needlessly lenghty 28 minute video, you would have noticed that the shop owner decided to discontinue his filming deal. No cancellation.
This is one of my favorite restoration shows. I'm going to miss the show because of the work and the interaction between staff as they produced some truly beautiful cars. Dan's shop is one of only two shops I presently believe I would let build a full restoration build for me. I will definitely miss the show, but maybe I'll go to Norfolk with something in tow for Dan to restomod for me.
I'm sorry to hear FantomWorks came to an end. Dan and his crew always put on a wonderful and interesting show. He always told it like it was. He also served his country well in the military. Thanks for your service Dan. Your show will be missed.
I admire him for not gloating about his 24 year military career, and being a green beret. Much more humble than a guy serving a 2 or 4 year stint in the military and acting like he's a full blown war veteran.

Most of the guys that invaded Normandy did a 2 to 4 year stint. The problem is not only with the veterans, but with the government and the insane amount of veterans because of the limitless funds that went into "defense".
This never fails. It seems like every time TV breaks its way into a business like this and turns into a reality show, the business suffers greatly at the expense of the business people are amused. Pass the word, keep Hollywood out of your business. It will kill you!
You're correct. Let see how many shows have failed because of tv show interference. Orange County Choppers, Gas Monkey Garage, Hot Rods ( Boyd Coddington) there are more but these are a few .

The greatest quote I have ever heard on TV was Dan Short, after giving one of his mechanics a task and the man standing and scratching his head (trying to figure out how he was supposed to do what he had been tasked with): "He's only scratching his head to give his balls a rest." Dead serious - he said it and it got on the air.
Dan's attention to detail sharpened my own "perfectionism." When I watched the show, I wished I could do some of the things his shop did, like fabrication of pieces to complete projects. I have since learned how to weld and with my "handed down" skills from my detail oriented dad (who always said... "If you're gonna do that, you might as well do it right the first time"). So, I learned to fabricate and do repairs I wouldn't have considered before, like replacing the firewall & many panels in my 1966 Mustang. And I am proud to say all my joint seams look better than they ever did from the factory. As an aside, I started my own channel on RUclips, called Restoration Shop (because I learned a lot from Dan Short's videos), but I quickly found as a single person doing all the repairs that it took me 5 times as long if not more, when re-recording videos. Thus, I resorted to taking documenting photos (1000's of them), recording the evidence of things I knew & wanted to share in performing my own restorations and repairs; however, most of the documenting of my labors has not seen video production for my channel because it's just so time consuming. One day I'll post the many photos in respective videos on each topic so that others could learn from my efforts. I am after all a science teacher in my daily job, but I'm nearing retirement from that "hobby" so I can get back to the other work I still love to do.
I liked this show and I still watch the reruns. I can understand why he ended the show. It's like having someone constantly looking over your shoulder.
Dont forget the leaches thrying to get mony from him....
I would let Dan and his crew restore a car for me anytime. It appears that he always insists on doing things the "right way". When he would go over the hours spent on the job, I usually felt the hours were more than reasonable. His crew are real artists and am sad that he may have lost a quality artist due to the stress of production. Anyone that has actually bee involved with restoration and fabrication, they would understand the labor that goes into one of these builds. And if you are attempting to restore a rare car and are looking for quality parts, it is a very difficult and time consuming task.
And don't forget EXPENSIVE!

I met Dan at SEMA and he was exactly the same as he was on the show; extremely knowledgeable about everything car related. It is sad how greed and stress can ruin a good thing. I still watch the reruns and will miss the show.
As an Aussie I loved watching Fantomworks and disappointed that it’s no longer made but I fully understand the reasons and I have to say it was the best automotive series and Dan easily came across as the best bloke!
I am sad to see the show go. But I can understand the daily stress on Dan and his crew. As you said, their love is rebuilding and restoring some very awesome cars and trucks. This is about the only show of this type that I would eagerly look forward to seeing. Again, will greatly miss it. Thanks.
This has long been one of my favorite shows on Speed/Velocity. Always enjoyed the episodes amd their craftsmenship- just some amazing, quality work done at Fantomworks. Sorry it's off the air but I can certainly understand how a show could interfere w/the shop's overall performance.
Dan may have left tv, but he returned to his roots, building and restoring cars. Well done 👍

@@matthewsmith1941 I miss the show but I do watch the re runs . I think anyone who watched could tell that Dan is genuine. Also It shows how good he is when helped the Young Man who had the yellow International Scout by doing some xtra work on his truck to help him out after being shafted by a previous so called garage work on his truck . The Young Man was in the Military . Dan and his crew did an awesome job on the Scout . If I currently had a classic and needed work done , Fantom works would be my choice to do the restoration . Plus I am in Hampton Roads , Va. , Glad Dan has his business here ✌️

I am the owner of 3 "fantomworks vehicles, the flame spitting 72 Cadillac Funeral Hearse, the70 Chrysler Hurst 300 and the curious yellow 71 sport fury. The work I recieved on these vehicles was sub standard. Simply PUT : NO QUALITY CONTROL ! Example: 3 cars had hVAC issues. These were repaired and working when they were picked up. They worked for approx 5 months now all are broken again. Interior work on the hearse was horrible. The air ride suspension on the hearse failed 2 weeks after I picked it up and got it home only to be returned to Fantomworks on my dime (500.00 each way ) I certainly would not recomend this shop. I considered a lawsuit and it wasn't because Dan Short has deep pockets. It's because he allowed substandard and sometimes illegal and dangerous work to leave his shop. Again: NO QUALITY CONTROL. The producers of the show were notified and were not surprised as they saw it happen several times.
Will surely miss Dan and crew. This was one great show., and I have no idea about automotive restoration, period! Glad Dan had the balls to take his company out of the lime light. I’ll miss you Dan and the guys. You kept me interested for hours on end. If I ever get to Norfolk, I plan on stopping in just tell Dan “he’s the best”.
I loved this show it seemed very genuine and raw at times. It’s difficult to ran a business when dealing with so many distractions . Dan was always cared more about the cars than the customer’s do. Bringing them back to better than new is hard when having so many different people working on it
I’m gonna miss Dan and the Crew. They are the only real car customization show on TV. I wish you good luck Dan and hope you have many more years of success and happiness in the art you and your Crew create.

i always appreciated when he would present the bill to the client and he would talk about the cost. Folks just have no idea how much it actually costs to restore a classic. I have been building my own hot rods for many years and have always appreciated the talents of others. There was a few times that some thing or another that was bugging me how to do something in my own garage and lo and behold, the answer was presented in his show. How kool was that? I am a retired federal agent and building hot rods was a stress relief. I cannot imagine how much stress he and the entire crew sustained. I'm glad that they have returned to normal and I wish him and his crew the best of luck!

No I have never had him do anything for me an I have a car he did an if you care to leave a number I'll sure send you some pictures of the work he did do an the invoice from his shop. My parents thought it was best that I run bowling machines at 11 an 12 years old an took me out of school. I left home at 13 because of an abusive stepfather who beat me an my brothers and they are dead now. My younger brother is from him an got treated very well. So no I'm not good at spelling but I try an the only thing I do best is work on cars which I've done for 40 yrs so if you want to make fun of me I dont care. I have 4 daughters an 9 grandchildren an been married for 37 years an think I've done pretty good for not having an education. Sorry for the rant. God bless. I miss Dan and his antics.I also liked hearing that he is partial to '67 Camaros,I've owned about a dozen of them.If Dan felt that he had to quit the show to save other aspects of his life,then by all means he made the right choice.It's very sad to hear that the show kept him away from his fathers final days...

I served in Iraq on three deployments as a 11B,11C Army and I have the greatest admiration for Dan Short for his no nonsense attitude for attention to detail.He also reminds me of my drill Sgt Savusa.I am proud to be in same group of Army veterans like Dan Short and my Brothers In Arms,Thank you Dan!!!!!

Always thought Dan was a classy honest and knowledgible Guy....Now that I have learned more of his back story....I am amazed at his talents and fortitude even more....I loved the show and always enjoyed watching the process of getting to that awesome final product.....I take the same pride in my own work and admire Dan even more now that I see the sacrifices he made....God Bless you Dan and I am so glad you are back to enjoying what you always wanted to do.....you were a great TV Reality star....you will always be a star in my book!

The man is a legend, his pride in his work and attention to detail was second to none. Amazing is the best word I can use to describe the show. Don't ever change Dan, as they say " you cant please all the people all the time ". UK viewer.
Dan and the guys worked SO hard to do their jobs while also being filmed, having camera crews everywhere, sound guys in the corner of the shop recording their every moment, and making the crew's job that much harder. It's GOT to be so hard to keep things going when your stress levels are through the roof. Thank you Dan for all of your hard earned efforts in providing us all with the level of entertainment that you and your crew brought to us. We can't tell you how much we loved the series.

Dan Short is like many of us who realized early on that a car was more than just transportation. There are millions of gear heads like me that work on their cars because they want to. The annoyance and frustration showed by Dan when things went south was honest and realistic. Parts are lost, parts cleaned don't fit, aftermarket parts don't work, etc., no matter how detailed one is, restoration is a journey with many ups and downs. Fortitude and persistent required. Fantomworks exposed that long journey in spades to us. Miss the show.

@@bb1518 Thanks for your comments. Restoration or resto mod work requires constant pre-fitting and refitting of parts. Aftermarket parts seldom can be used without tweaking and re-tweaking them, ad infinitum it seems. Perfection is an ideal; a level not held by manufacturers.
Sad to hear about all the down sides of this show, I can fully understand the pressures that Dan was under, having run my own business for over fifty years. I hope that Dan is able to keep his shop open and making money, I also hope his health hold up and he will be able to enjoy the years ahead at his own pace.
This was the best show I ever watched, and I know it was real due to how dan talked about each car, the detail, and how much stress he was under with each build. As someone who does something similar, hats off to you dan.
I really miss the problem solving and the creativity of Dan's mind-set. He really is an automotive artist.
I'm a car guy, I restore and modify cars every day. FantomWorks was by far the most realistic car building show of them all, with the most time filmed of actually working on the cars. Counting Cars was the exact opposite, I couldn't stand that one but I looked forward to this one every week. It is missed, but it's understandable why Dan wanted out. Anyone in that position would.

I thought this was a great show. I tried to watch every episode. Dan's attitude about safety is what shows you a real guy. I hope he, his family, and his employees all prosper from here forward.
I stand 100% behind Dan Short, this was the BEST SHOW on the network and sad it couldnt stay on, he is a great person and it comes through on the show. We're with him 1000%.

Dan gave a lot of young guys the opportunity to work on car's in his shop ,And that is very commendable .
I was amazed at Dan's empathy toward customers who experienced tragedy during the restoration of their vehicles. In one episode, Dan waved labor costs for a lady whose husband died before his early 50s black and white Buick. I will miss the show.

Dan is a guy who is immediately likable. He cares....about his people, his product, and his customer(s). His military background was very apparent in his show and I personally loved his emotion which he showed. Being military myself, I always looked forward to watching his show with his guys because it reminded me so much of military teams which I have been a part of. I miss his show and all his guys.
I am glad he has got his life back and he is doing what makes him and his family happy. Dan has given a lot in his life to a lot of people. As another role model of mine says...”Good for him!”

Was a decent show but I often felt Dan was being a bit more “dramatic” for the camera and going a bit overboard. How he racked up so much debt getting money from two sources is very odd.

If I were ever in a position to need a car restored, I would go to Dan. He has a heart of gold. He is a perfectionist. I trust him. I'm very pleased to know thst he is doing what he loves. He does not need the show. But I have enjoyed his show over the years. His health is most important. Best of luck to Dan.

Hey, if people think they're going to get a car restored to this degree without paying a lot of money, they are just delusional. It takes a lot of hours, and a lot of (probably)rare & expensive parts to restore these vehicles, if they aren't ready to spend that kind of money, they either need to try to do it themselves, or sell the car to someone else who has deeper pockets.
@@rustycowll5735 I once talked to a guy who owned a body shop who also did restorations. He said, "don't ever give an exact quote; just tell them you're going to keep track of the hours involved." One of the things I've noticed about the show is that Dan's always telling his crew, "keep track of your hours"--the first time I heard him say it, I immediately thought about that earlier conversation with the body shop owner, some years ago... lol
I also can attest to unfortunately learning how many leaches are out there. Ya work your ass off 20 hours a day on good faith, and there come the leaches. All they see are dollar signs, while the small business person has personal debt and long hours

Leaches. Yes. I know about them too. I installed floors for 20 yrs to get where i am. Every one thinks we just ride around and pick up checks. They dont see the long hours, hard labor, and when we measure 10 jobs to only get 2 of them. It takes a lot out of a person to run a small business.

What I liked about the show was Dans honesty he would tell you what he could do or not do based on what the customer wanted and he always got his own hands dirty unlike other shop owners who would just delegate their authority

I had the good fortune to be in Norfolk in 2018, met Dan, and took his shop tour. What you see in TV is the same in person. Authenticity!
So if they are paying YOU to film in your shop, how the hell do you get 1 million $ in debt? He does not seem to be a dumb business guy. Moral of this story; Want a good life, stay off of TV and Social Media.
He is not getting paid by the network or anybody for the filming. I live near by and took the tour of his shop, he does the tour himself and explains how everything works. He told us he gets no money for the filming....just the free advertising.

The show is still being aired for the second time in the U.K.. I am amazed at the skill of the team in producing excellent products better than the original manufacturer's models.
Dan's commitment to quality workmanship, a man to be trusted. Honesty in business is hard to find. Sad to see his show gone.
My husband & I were having a 1935 Cadillac restored when he first started watching Fantomworks. So many of the things Dan had to deal with we experienced as our car went through the process. Our restorer let my husband "help" in the process, something we did not see Dan do. We can understand why! Our shop was a much smaller operation and also did regular maintenance service for older daily drivers. When, as an owner, you can accept the fact that the work preformed on your car will be used by the public to judge the quality of the skill and integrity of the shop, you can better understand why the shop owner does not want to short cut any part of the project. As the owner you will be happier with the project in the long run if go with the suggestions of the reputable shop owner. We hope to visit Dan's shop some day to tell him how much we enjoyed his show.
