"He wanted the music to stick in people's minds. Kinda of like a curse." Well, he certainly succeeded in that. I *still* randomly start humming random bits of songs from this game and I haven't played it in about 8 years.
Well, I never played Katamari before but I only mentioned that on Pac Man Rally game. But when I heard that song called "Katamari On The Swing" for the first time, I guess he's right about that "curse" part.
"Without a villain." Do you REMEMBER the King of All Cosmos destroying the universe, and then making his kid clean up his mess? Sounds rather villainous to me.
Man, I gotta love Takahashi. Katamari was a hugeee impact on my childhood. He was disappointed with the recycled tropes and took matters into his own hands, and created a damn near perfect ass game. Dude just wanted people to be happy while playing a game, and not to be stressed out by it and he did a good ass job of doing it. I can't believe the idea was almost rejected by Namco. Dunno where I'd be without this beautiful game
Daniel Of Tamriel I had always been immensed seeing this game in stores on-screen, but when I finally got it I was blown away. The music helped out a lot with that, to the point where songs would go on repeat constantly. Trust me, no one blames you humming lol.
Having a time limit/size restrictions on different levels is crucial to what makes the game so great. It keeps you wanting to see what’s next. I remember wanting so badly to be able to just roll forever and see how much it could grow, which gave the final stage such a sense of catharsis and excitement. You think “ok, this must be as far as it goes.” and then you start rolling up mountains, cities, and continents.
FINALLY!! Katamari is one of my favorite games of all time. I blindly purchased it after I got a broken Harvest Moon game for my birthday. That first play through blew my mind. I couldn't believe the amount of insane shit going on and I thought I was on drugs. Not to mention this soundtrack is my favorite one of any media. Like, I go out of my way just to hear these songs I still have memorized despite not playing the game in a while. Seriously hope the new game by Takahashi is just as awesome
One of the most innovative and funny experiences I ever had with gaming. I literally couldn't stop playing back when I bought it for my PS2. The original soundtrack blew me away and is still one of my favorites.
Wow, I really like Takahashi views on gaming. If you like motion control, more power to you but it always felt gimmicky to me, with games that weren't all the fun besides the quirk. Maybe there are some great one that i haven't played but I'll take a finely tuned normal controller based action game any day.
Motion control can work well, but only when it actually contribute to the gameplay, and isn't the focus of the game itself. VR and motion control may both be gimmicky, but when both are combined well, they fade into the background. Note that in this case, I do not refer to motion control for anything except the movement of the visor (which is a required component of many VR games anyway), and usually any other input source for such games would be better suited to a more traditional form. Offhandedly, I still think that playing Federation force as an entirely motion controlled VR experience (by constantly holding the enable motion control button and hence not using auto-lock at all) is optimal.
flashmozzg I've played and beat all the games and preferred the Wii version. Especially in the first game having to rub the bandages down sucked as did having to double click for healing touch. I liked being able to switch tools with the numchuk and felt like I was personally faster gameplay wise. I will say with the Wii you have to be careful how far or close you are to the sensor bar. I noticed if its not right the pointer will stick or not detect. No one really talks about this being one of the reasons why the motion controls for the system were so bad. I got to where I could gauge how far away to be. Anyway I like all the games and if you like the DS ones better that's fine. I do find trauma team the weakest in the series so ds ones ahead of it.
That's so interesting. Takahashi only worked on Damacy and WLK. WLK was the greatest leap in quality the series ever had. Every game after seemed like it recycled a few too many level concepts.
Would be cool to see a Katamari roll up a fighting army... They would unite against the katamari, but resistance would be futile. They would unite into one single star in the sky... How lovely.
The Foun Remaster* How do gamers keep messing this up when the terms are older than gaming itself? But yeah, it is getting one, along with Loco Roco. And I do want to see a video on it.
My classmate couldn't understand the appeal of Katamari games just by me describing it. One day, he and another friend who liked Katamari convinced him to play. Cue two hours of playing later and he started to hum along. He actually bought Katamari Forever the other day too.
Saying that motion control is only fun because moving your body is fun is really making little of developers hard work... He's basically saying that making a game with motion control is a cheap shortcut to making it fun without any merit to it. Not every game with motion control is fun... And those that are fun surely have a lot of thought put into them
I'm surprised to see that he didn't mentionned the fact that Damacy was the only Katamari game that never got an PAL release, since they thought that the game is too “quirky” for these markets, yet EA decided to release “We Love Katamari” and “Me and my Katamari” in PAL markets two years after the release of Damacy, with considerable success.
Man. Takahashi seemingly doesn't undertstand that it's possible for a game to be a success both artistic and buisness wise. Proof: Naughty Dog's games. The Zelda games. HIS OWN FUCKING GAMES.
I remember picking up this game at a library as a child. I played it so much and it scared me a bit. It was unnatural, there was some weird feeling about it. Now I have some weird creepy nostalgia feeling from it! xD
I would agree that motion controls are kinda gimmicky, but the best use I've found for them is on Zelda Breath of the Wild to slightly adjust your aim with bows. It's so much easier to get a headshot when you don't have to flick a stick around!
Pretty sure if the decision was left to himself, Matt would have stretched this one out for 20+ minutes. I think this was his fave game series (or way up towards the top spot on his list)...
Okay, so the Nintendo Switch has no complicated control gimmicks, has powerful enough hardware, and there hasn't ever been a Katamari game on a Nintendo console... so... WHY DON'T THEY MAKE A NEW KATAMARI ON THE SWITCH!?
Man, his comments about the Wii and Wii U controller gimmicks are so real. I love Nintendo and all, but dammit, gaming as a medium is still so very new in the grand scheme of things -- this whole rat race about moving forward as fast as possible with gimmicks, or even simply graphics and other technological advancements, seems so unnecessary to me. I feel like even the 8-bit era, for example, had another whole bunch of years in which it could've been explored and improved with its simplicity -- more modern games that exude this fact magnificently and become popular and critically acclaimed like Mega Man 9 and Shovel Knight are testament to this fact. It should be less about 'next big things' and more about 'exploring what's already established to make some really good stuff, while moving forward naturally in time'. That's how I feel, anyway. Of course, Nintendo tends to be the AAA game company that undrestands this the most, at least as far as the games themselves go. The hardware has been trying too hard to be wacky and different unnecessarily for SEVERAL generations, though.
Everything needs to evolve to be relevant to the masses; game systems need a gimmick, movies need to be in 3D or 4D or 4K, books need to be digital, phones need a new addition like dual front facing cameras for close or wide angle selfies. It doesn't need to change for those who are already patrons of the medium, but to attract new patrons or retain those who are following the trend, they need to "innovate".
hip indeed Except that by extending the 8-Bit era, we wouldn't have had the 16-bit era and I have a hard time coming up with a single instance where an 8-bit game was better than its 16-bit sequel. You're also confusing modern retro games with actual retro games. Shovel Knight would not have been possible on an NES.
Seems a little hypocritical that the dude made a game to be different and then shit on other people when they tried to be different. It also seemed like he was way too concerned about something being artistic than actually pleasing the consumers or running a successful business model
absolutely not, but he was against them because they were unique, I'm assuming the Wii was included in the critique, which was actually really successful. Commercially though, yeah the Wii U was bad
The artistic part I can kind of understand, companies have a tendency to step on a person or person's creative ideas for the sake of making more money. But there can be times where an artist's vision may not work as intended, or may be too ahead of its time to truly work. I suppose it's a sort of difficult balancing act, do you scarifice some of your artistic vision to make a better selling game, or do you try to stick close to your vision even if it doesn't necessarily become a big seller?
I think he doesn't really understand the draw of motion controls. I love them as an option for games, because it opens up new ways of experimentation with a control scheme. There are always games where motion controls aren't really needed, but a lot of those games have different types of control scheme options. Sometimes in those kind of games the motion controls even end up being the preffered option (just look at Splatoon). And then there are those games with the specific control scheme in mind, like how Trauma Center makes good use of the Wii's pointing controls. I try to understand people having issues with "gimmicks", but the fact that there are games that work because of the controls or are at least improved by the option to use them makes me see them as a step in the right direction in terms of innovation. But I know I won't change any minds and only few people will read this comment.
So, ah...anyone got a name for the game at 1:50? I want to see more of the gameplay considering it looks like it's a spin on classic RPG gameplay in a way that I haven't seen. Though if it's only on PlayStation I wouldn't be able to play it anyway, so...whatever.
Ah, so that's what Tales of Symphonia looks like! Looks like it's on Steam, too, so I guess I'll look into it a bit more and maybe I'll get it at some point!

Wow, Matt got a spot on Did You Know Gaming...and he isn't even verified.
Not anymore!
Not a game watcher type of this type
i can't take Matt being serious. It feels weird.
I actually forgot it was Matt for several moments. My brain couldn't even register that it was him.
The first 2 Katamari games are still my go-tos for fun, mindless destressing. I'm so glad they exist.
I remember I would play Katamari for days and start humming the themes when I had the urge to play again!
Its theme is basically the video game theme equivalent of "It's A Small World After All." Once you hear it, it *never* leaves your head.
Daniel Of Tamriel I had always been immensed seeing this game in stores on-screen, but when I finally got it I was blown away. The music helped out a lot with that, to the point where songs would go on repeat constantly. Trust me, no one blames you humming lol.
My favorite theme was Katamari on the swing!

Daniel Of Tamriel You are the definition of a fuckboy

"Having specific goals in the levels was rejected"
Then what the actual fuck was that Cancer level?
I was thinking that too, and the infamous bear level
I'm STILL trying to roll up that elusive Cowbear in Katamari Forever.
i finished the bear level within 58 seconds i got a bear carving
Cookiofshadows2 takahashi only worked on the first two games
Cirus Blast And the Cancer level was in the first game.
FINALLY!! Katamari is one of my favorite games of all time. I blindly purchased it after I got a broken Harvest Moon game for my birthday. That first play through blew my mind. “Broken Harvest Moon game” as in it was a bad Harvest Moon game, or was the disc or cartridge of the game literally broken?
One of the most innovative and funny experiences I ever had with gaming. I literally couldn't stop playing back when I bought it for my PS2. The original soundtrack blew me away and is still one of my favorites.
He finally did it. Congratulations, Matt.

CrossKnights The only series I can think that I really like the motion controls is the trauma center games.
Motion control can work well, but only when it actually contribute to the gameplay, and isn't the focus of the game itself. VR and motion control may both be gimmicky, but when both are combined well, they fade into the background.

Offhandedly, I still think that playing Federation force as an entirely motion controlled VR experience (by constantly holding the enable motion control button and hence not using auto-lock at all) is optimal.
I also want to add Splatoon to the discussion, that game works amazingly well with motion controls
+wdvisl, IMHO they worked better with a stylus and a second screen on DS. Felt more like you were operating a scalpel/other tools.
flashmozzg I've played and beat all the games and preferred the Wii version. Especially in the first game having to rub the bandages down sucked as did having to double click for healing touch. I liked being able to switch tools with the numchuk and felt like I was personally faster gameplay wise. I will say with the Wii you have to be careful how far or close you are to the sensor bar. I've only played 'We Love Katamari' for the PS2, but that one game made me fall in love with the whole series.
this is one of my favorite game series in general. its just so special to my heart.
I like this Takahashi guy, he understands that motion controls don't make a game better.

That's so interesting. Takahashi only worked on Damacy and WLK. WLK was the greatest leap in quality the series ever had. Every game after seemed like it recycled a few too many level concepts.

hip indeed Except that by extending the 8-Bit era, we wouldn't have had the 16-bit era and I have a hard time coming up with a single instance where an 8-bit game was better than its 16-bit sequel.

Salmence100 I guess, but there are always exceptions. Uniqueness is not above criticism just because it's unique.
Well, just because something is unique doesn't mean it's good. Not saying the Wii U is bad though
absolutely not, but he was against them because they were unique, I'm assuming the Wii was included in the critique, which was actually really successful.
Commercially though, yeah the Wii U was bad

I think he doesn't really understand the draw of motion controls. I love them as an option for games, because it opens up new ways of experimentation with a control scheme. There are always games where motion controls aren't really needed, but a lot of those games have different types of control scheme options. Sometimes in those kind of games the motion controls even end up being the preffered option (just look at Splatoon). I try to understand people having issues with "gimmicks", but the fact that there are games that work because of the controls or are at least improved by the option to use them makes me see them as a step in the right direction in terms of innovation. But I know I won't change any minds and only few people will read this comment.
