  • AFDD identify dangerous faults caused by arcing in electrical circuits and are designed to switch off the circuit before a fire occurs. Under the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations and beyond wider use of these types of devices is expected. This video shows a practical demonstration of building and then connecting up an AFDD from Crabtree.

    Interesting setup. Here in America the arc fault device is also the circuit breaker, no need to pair it with another breaker. Your manufacturer's found a great way to make you buy more! We also have combination AFDD/RCBO breakers in the same module, so one space to protect them all.
    Our code book requires arc fault protection for basically every circuit in a new house. It also requires that we upgrade to arc fault if we add an extension to an existing circuit. Welcome to the Arc Fault club, siemens will be along shortly to collect your dues.

      Here in Germany Siemens is the only manufacturer how sells the afdd and the MCB/rcbo in two different parts. I think your crabtree is made in the Siemens manufacturing plant and only labeled as crabtree. Hager Eaton, Legrand, Schneider,ABB have monoblock design.

    I wonder if a piece of test gear is going to appear to check sensitivity / time etc, like we have for RCDs? I absolutely love this new AFDD set up. I wish it was around me years ago. I retire soon and years ago we would chat round the brew table about such a device appearing. “Narr, never in a month of Sunday’s was the conclusions! Well, here it is. I’m more than impressed. And amendment 3 last year. Brilliant. It’s such a refreshing change to see improvements rather than accessories and equipment going thinner and cheaper in quality, and more dangerous. Us sparks have been complaining for years! Real changes, rather than the usual rhetorical opinions etc.
    Thanks guys. A brilliant video again!

    Will every circuit need to be covered by an AFDD device?
    Is there an AFDD device that covers several circuits like and RCD?
    Will every MCB module require a ‘bolt on’ module like this effectivley doubling the size of the CU?

    • @mowcius
      @mowcius 5 лет назад

      @@paulmerchant9015 I doubt it as the regulations try to lead you towards RCBO boards as it is. Electrical work will be >5% of the value of your house soon!
      On a practical note, unlike RCDs where faults are often relatively easy to guess and find, a fault detected by an AFDD could indeed be anywhere in the installation - narrowing it down to a single circuit at least gives you a chance of finding it before you rip all of your hair out.

    If it has Overvoltage protection ,is that not what an SPD protects against ? Therefore it will be an MCB, RCD, AFDD and SPD in a two module device ?

    • @mowcius
      @mowcius 5 лет назад

      I suspect that the detection and protection time for the overvoltage part is not anywhere near fast enough to help with the surges that a SPD protects against.
      SPDs are designed to suppress and divert the excess energy (with discrete components) from a surge to stop it destroying the rest of the installation. The AFDD will simply detect it (digitally), and do its best to cut off the circuit.
      They likely threw in that little crumb of extra functionality simply because the existing circuitry and software could do it.

    If an Electrician is competent and experienced there would not be any need for an AFDD, or is the trade now catering for amateurs and Firemen?

    • @mowcius
      @mowcius 5 лет назад +1

      A fault causing an electrical arc could be caused by any number of incidents caused by other trades or indeed the homeowner.
      These devices will detect faults in connected equiment as well - arcs from frayed appliance cables/extensions, arcs in cheap electric heaters etc.

    My understanding is that AFDDs can significantly affect ethernet power line adaptors... Has anyone been able to lab the scenerio up yet?

    • @mowcius
      @mowcius 5 лет назад

      Ethernet powerline adapters are basically the devil anyway so I only see that as a good thing.
      They only pass regulations on noise in ideal conditions/test setups and not when actually used. Your mains wiring acts as an antenna for all of the high frequency noise that the devices generate. The noise generated is across a range of frequencies and tends to swamp amateur radio bands as well as the 2.4GHz range and others.

    • @themoog
      @themoog 5 лет назад

      @@mowcius I don't disagree. But I think it would be interesting to see the results. For the ham enthusiasts though survey it would give them a more challenging fun project in filtering and recovering the snr... Too easy for them now days ;)

    • @mowcius
      @mowcius 5 лет назад

      @@themoog I think it's the HAM radio enthusiasts trying to listen to those signals that are basically lost in the noise under *normal* situations that get upset when you raise the noise floor!
