As a Laotian American living in small towns of a southern state, this should be fun to find those ingredients. More like I'd prob hafta drive about 50 mins-1 hr away for them. There's an Asian store near by, but it's not big at all. Def haven't kept in contact w/ any fam in the longest time. so, I do appreciate these type vids. Bc any random thing I start craving for, I hafta at least remember it, by myself. Idk always know the names. Or they do end up in my feeds 🙄, sparking the idea. Sometimes I do remember everything from the top of my head. But idk if it was always my own mom's creations or an actual lao dish. I made some fish saucey, limey, onioniony, tomatoey, cilantroey shrimp the other day & that turned out good. Made some turkey :/ laap today & that was yummy. Glad I found some roasted rice bc from what I recall that kills the nose. & throat. Unless that was peppers she was making. I'll eventually get around to this. I almost thought my Caucasian hubby or maybe 1 of his fam members went through the cabinets & threw away the rice. I was about to flip. Like they don't even know how many dishes I could even make w/ the toasted rice. Somexs I just eat it w/ sour apples... His gpa is a charactor... wannabe vet that can't ever choose sides... he's a weird 1! But yet, he gets into my food & it gets on my last nerve. He's like an overgrown kid to me. :/ ahhh!
I tried this recipe two days ago. It’s very sweet. The soy sauces, Napa, and salt didn’t help at all to counterbalance such sweetness. I had to pour in two whole cups of Napa just to tone down the sweetness. I probably won’t make this version again, but just a personal preference. This dish is very popular so I would still recommend people to try this version out and adjust to your own taste.
House of X Tia I just made this too. It’s super super sweet ! Next time I’ll add less sugar other then that it would of been perfect !! I’ll give it a good again with lesser sugar
This channel has been a blessing since my lao mom rarely cooked😣. I have a 6yo daughter that I need to keep up with the lao cooking, and I couldn't do it without this channel!
Oh my gosh, you look like a girl I dated from Laos. She could cook. She had the exact same expressions and kindness you have. We went our separate ways. I must say, my family loves your dishes. By all means, keep up the vids. We love the energy you have for your dishes. Thank you.

We Vietnamese have a traditional dish that looking almost like this (but we don't add star anise) and is commonly eaten on Lunar New Year, but of course people eat it as daily meal as well. It's called Thịt kho tàu. Anyway great video Tia!
Made this dish and it’s just like how my momma makes it! I am very particular when it comes to this dish and I am so happy it’s quick and easy! Plus the quail eggs are soooo much better than having to boil eggs and all that! Thanks so much for the recipe xoxo
So I made this yesterday and the soup is so black. I remember the soup to be a more lighter Brown when I was a kid. Did I do something wrong? I used the exact ingredients in the video.
measurements are in the description box below. did you maybe burn the sugar? i'm not really sure why it turned black if you followed and used exact ingredients.
What kind of mushroom and sweet soy sauce do you use? It would be awesome if you could do a "what's in my pantry" for brands you like of sauces & other things! :)
This is like the boujee version of thom kem. The kind when you make when you got two paychecks coming in, and it's Friday payday, and you bought this these groceries before the paychecks come in, and you have guests over, and that guess is the president of Mars. =) Looks good. But I don't know about that star anise on that plate at the end. You can't munch on that!
This is one of my favorites. Of course you know that this dish is called doam kaem or "boiled salt" when translated :D Just a suggestion, instead of cooking the pork in a separate pot you could just place it boiling water/blanch it for five minutes or so to get the impurities out. Another thing is to add cilantro to this as a finisher/garnish. Awesome video as always!
House of X Tia yea probably. I meant in my comment there are many ingredients that I don't have at my place so gotta wait to go to my sisters or my parents house and ask pops to make some :)
This youtube channel is awesome! As a Laotian American I can learn to cook my comfort foods. Thank you!
thank you and your welcome!

all recipes should be made to taste. some like it sweeter, some like it less sweet. it's your preference! i just have to ask...what is napa?
@@HouseofXTia Hello! Napa is just fish sauce :) But yes, after I adjusted it, I did end up liking it more. Thanks!
House of X Tia I just made this too. It’s super super sweet ! Next time I’ll add less sugar other then that it would of been perfect !! I’ll give it a good again with lesser sugar
glad you were able to adjust it to your liking!
yum! thank you for trying the recipe :)

Hi, it looks yummy! I was wondering if I can freeze it and save some for later?
yes but I find the egg kind of loses its bouncy texture. if it were me, i'd freeze the sauce and meat and then reheat it with new eggs :)
Perfect!Thank you!@@HouseofXTia
Tia, I must know where you get your pots from? I have been looking for pots that color forever.
they're ann's pots. you can get them from williams sonoma. the brand is le creuset :)

so many cultures have their own interpretation of this dish! i've had them all except for filipino style :). thanks for sharing!
Some add star anise..but my mom don't add star anise.. But it taste as good..
Pickled mustard greens and thai chili on the side would go great with this dish
oooh yea not a bad idea with the pickled mustard greens. i eat everything with chilies!
Made this dish and it’s just like how my momma makes it! I am very particular when it comes to this dish and I am so happy it’s quick and easy! Plus the quail eggs are soooo much better than having to boil eggs and all that! Thanks so much for the recipe xoxo

Thanks for the recipe! How many eggs do we add?
i used the entire carton of quail eggs. for chicken eggs - i would go with 6-8.
Awww thank you for the reply! I made this earlier and used 10 chicken eggs. It was great! I will try quail next time. Thanks again!!
your welcome!
What brand are the pots please?
My father in law would make this dish all the time 😢 thank you for the recipe 🙏
le crusuet :)
Looks good. I sometimes add coconut juice to get rid of the pork smell. Cuz sometimes it’s too gamey when eating pork.
i used to have that problem too but I stopped purchasing from asian butchers and now get better quality cuts. It helps a lot!
Do you have a video with the steak sauce. I don’t know what it is call, but it have lemon grass, pepper and some other stuff
not yet!
Should I add more sugar if it's not sweet enough? I tried making it myself the other day and had more of a bitter taste.
Yes but this recipe is quite sweet. There should be no bitter taste at all unless the sugar was burnt.
@@HouseofXTia I gotcha. It might have been that. Thanks for the tip
You’re welcome! Please try it again with low and slow heat!
You got my heart when you said,” quail eggs.”

How many cups of sugar? I didn’t see it in the description. :/
it's there :) 1 & 1/4 cup sugar
This reminds me of Filipino adobo!
every ethnicity has their own version! I love adobo
What kind of sugar did she use? it's obviously not white, I keep trying but the sugar keeps seizing up.
it is white sugar that has been caramelized on low heat :)
Yummy 😋
