The originally designed Quilt is not designed to be quilt as you got, but Gayle thinks it will be easier for you to learn, serge, quilt and rulerwork as you go in smaller sections.

how many strips should we have in each 'unit' to then use decorative threads to serge together?

It’s up to you. Whatever suits you. I sewed 4 strips together plain and then seed rose groups together with the decorative thread.
