It’s not really a proper ‘technique’. You loosen your lips and break normal trumpet embouchure to such an extent that the trumpet just becomes an amplifier for your lips rather than being something that forces air through valves to produce a pitch.
Professional trumpet player here 😅. It's rarely if ever used. Arturo does a great job here. Basically it's just flapping your lips on a certain pitch and your mouthpiece picks it up. I tell my students to practice pedal tones without a mouthpiece....super super relaxed.
As a trumpet player, Sandoval’s low note schtick always kinda bugged me. In general, I think the whole range as show of technique as opposed to musicality thing feels more like a show-offy party trick than musical, especially when 99% of the audience doesn’t really understand what it is he’s doing and so the impressiveness of it is pretty shallow. His musicality is what makes his work so good, at the end of the day, and if all he had was range he’d just be one of the many session players who can do this. Still, when it comes to his high range, it’s his ability to hold on to his beautifully warm tone that makes it a joy to listen to, but I can’t help feeling like trumpet pedal tones aren’t as technically impressive as the performance makes it look to the audience, and that they don’t really sound good, they just sound low.
As a trumpet player, that can barely play a high E. I can not even imagine how much his head must've hurt after playing that 5th to last note.. Very well done, sir.
I will tell you from how I play high notes one ego helps a lot when playing high don’t know a single person who can play high and doesn’t have a big ego but for real just play relaxed and don’t think about just go and you’ll hit higher notes my highest note I’ve played is a triple d now not saying it sounded good or I can play in context but with fresh chops and having the feeling of going for a record I got triple d once you hit a double g it’ll get easier and easier and you’ll only go up keep practicing hope you go for the stars
Honestly I used to "Cheat" when playing high notes. I bought a Schilke 14a4a mouthpiece and I could push past the double C (The C an octave above the one over the staff) in highschool. Honestly loved that mouthpiece, you should try it.
@@videogamecoverss no screamer mouthpieces are the worst one IMO they ruin your embouchure and it is straight up cheating honestly I wouldn’t get any satisfaction playing on a screamer and if I can get a triple d on a 5c you don’t need a screamer to play high notes if you are going to get anything other than a 5c get a 3c not screamer mouthpieces ever
@@sage5559 I do agree that it's better to train hard to get better or higher notes. But the "cheating" could help to boost your ego. When you play high on a trumpet, you do not really need to use valves. This is because the harmonics are so close to each other. For example, we use open (no) valves to play: C4 G4 C5 E5 5G Bb5 C6 D6 You can see that the pitches get closer. This is due to the quirks of the harmonic series. As such, at extremely high pitches valves aren't really necessary. Sometimes we use them to get a little bit more control but most of the pitch comes from the lips and not from the valves at this range.
Often times it doesn't matter what valve you play at anything above G about high C and up; the partials are extremely close. Though I will say, that on some horns it does help 'lock' onto the pitch of a note better. Some horns slot better in the upper range than others, that's for sure.
