Saito Hajime was born during the Tokugawa Shogunate's decline and would serve as the captain of the third unit of the Shinsengumi. The Shinsengumi were an elite group of swordsmen founded to protect the Shogun and its representatives. Many ronin would wish death to the shogunate in order to expel all western influences from Japan and would long to see the emperors of Japan back in power. Noblemen, peasants and young samurai were dissatisfied with the shogunates handling of foreigners entering japan. This would result in political chaos and civil war would brew.

Thanks. Shinsemgumi is usually represented by Kondo Isami, Hijikata Toshizo and Okita Soji. But I always feel like Saito deserve a place there. He participated in more battles than both Okita and Kondo but I hardly hear people mention him. So I'm glad that you made a documentary on him.
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed!

Thanks Ollie. Another amazing narration. ♾️❤️😘🥰🇯🇵🏯🎎
Tokugawa Yoshinobu resigned as a shogun first in 1867 and gave the administrative power back to the emperor Meiji because the shogunate faced so much resistance at that time and people wanted the emperor rule again. However, Yoshinobu later created a council full of his retainers with him as the head, basically Yoshinobu was still a shogun without being called a shogun.
This angered the Satsuma-Choshu rebels (aka Satcho alliance). Fearing that Yoshinobu would become too powerful and end up being as strong as Ieyasu if they didn’t take an immediate action, the Satcho marched to Kyoto to get an emperor decree that declared Yoshinobu as a traitor of the realm and confiscated all of Yoshinobu’s lands and properties. Yoshinobu knew this so he also marched his army to Kyoto. Their encounter led to the battle of Toba-Fushimi and kicked off the Boshin war. It ended in 1869 with the (in)complete overthrow of Tokugawa shogunate, the absorption of Hokkaido and Okinawa and most importantly, the Meiji restoration.
The reason I said it’s an “incomplete” overthrow because many of the politicians in the Meiji parliament were former Tokugawa retainers. The prime example is Baron Shibusawa Eiichi, who was a close confidant of Tokugawa Yoshinobu and the modernization policy of Meiji government wasn’t that much different from Yoshinobu’s policy, just with a few more extra steps.
Such a turbulent era, everything the imperialists were fighting for in the boshin war (their Japanese culture and samurai values) were thrown out of the window as soon as they won the war. Then the satsuma rebellion happened and it was goodbye to the samurai class.
@@historyprofiles Just like many other revolutionaries.
- Robespierre overthrew the Bourbon dynasty for being tyrannical, ended up being a tyrant himself which gave rise to the bigger tyrant that was Emperor Napoleon.
- Lenin overthrew the Romanovs because they’re too dictatorial, which led to the founding of Soviet Union.
@@nont18411 it’s quite fishy as well as Japan ditched the gold standard after the war, reflecting whoever was truly in charge may have been manipulated, in any case, like promised nobunaga is next, email me or leave a comment if you want anything in particular to be mentioned in the next video
I already play War Thunder!!! Nice one old bean.

So where is Kawakeme Gensai, the real life Kenshin Himura, this whole time? Did they really crossed path?
