    I rode a k1200S from Nov 2006 to March 2013. I put 66,000 miles (over 106, 000km) on it. I loved it. The turn indicators are far better on the left and right bars. I never had one problem. BMW changed it on the K1300S because journalists on short rides couldn’t get their minds around it. The gear change on mine was perfect, with no lag. Mine was a 2007 model year in Black which came with ASC, ESA and ABS. I commuted on this bike from London to Leicester which is about 110miles (177km) and I went all over the UK. It was my birthday present to myself, after I split with my ex-wife. I spent £,000s on BMW kit, most of which I still have.
    My first trip was to see a girl I met on the internet. She lived in the border region of Scotland, and I picked the brand new bike up on the Thursday and rode up on the Friday night after work. It was 350 miles each way, so it ran the bike in when I got home. The weather going up was awful. Torrential rain, biting cold winds and pitch black sky. I remember getting to Scotland feeling relaxed, warm and unstressed and all because of the bike. My bike before it was an Aprilia Futura 1000RST, which was a pile of crap compared to the BM. I had 18 months of problems with it that Aprilia didn’t want to sort. I had a bad bike accident in Feb 2005 and the bike was thankfully written off. That accident got me £20,500 compensation from the idiot who pulled out on me. If I hadn’t been wearing my back protector I would be dead now. The bike and me went skyward and I landed on my bike on my back. That morning I actually left home without it, but something told me to go back even after 6 miles. That’s how I got the money for my K1200S.
    The K1200S was a superb bike for me because I used it for internet dating! I travelled all over the UK looking for someone after I split, and that bike was a great conversation starter. One girl said to me that it looks like the sort of bike James Bond would ride. I used to have complete strangers saying how amazing it looked. Japanese bikes always looked so plasticky in those days and they still do to some extent. Whenever I spoke about this bike I used to say “you just have to think of the speed you want to go, and before you know it, you’re there!” I never got less than 38mpg (UK gallon is bigger than the US gallon). The best I ever got was 64mpg on a long cruise without rocket ship acceleration.
    Unfortunately, I sold it in 2013 because my new wife and son and I came back to live in the UK, having been in Cyprus. I used to keep it at my mum’s house and ride it when I was back in the UK for work. I was fortunate being able to live in Cyprus and commute to the UK for work which involved me travelling to India a lot. So I sacrificed my beloved K1200S to buy a family car since we needed it quickly. My new wife promised me she’d buy me a new bike when the time is right and that time will be Spring 2021. I’m getting a new 40 year edition R1200GS Adventure TE and it will have every conceivable extra on it. My wife has been on the back of one and she loved it. The UK’s roads are a disgrace and you’re risking your life on any form of sports bike now. So a GSA makes sense since an adventure bike will soak up the potholes easily.
    I wanted the bumble bee coloured K1200S but the colours changed for my model year. Anyway, it’s great to see your passion for the bike and that it’s still relevant today. I have 5 kids and it’s what always kept me safe on the bike. On a bike like a K1200S, there’s never any need to take a stupid risk. I always used to think what I’d lose if I did anything stupid. That’s not to say I didn’t ride the bike the way it was designed. I had it up to an indicated 174mph on a run on a closed track. The revs were still building, but I had to slow for a bend.
    Anyway, I hope you have years of safe riding. At the time there was no safer bike on the road. Stay safe and have fun...it’s possible.

      Good morning Peter and happy Monday. It's mid day where you are at - I apologize for the delay in responding, the weekend was busy and I wanted a fresh head before writing back to this amazing travel journal you shared . Thank you for that, I truly enjoyed reading it, as did my wife Jackie who saw a little of our own story in it. She too joined me on a motorcycle trip when we were still basically strangers. We were not together for more than a month before we got engaged. The bike is such an interesting tool in that regard - it enables world travel, changing of scenes, adding of new friends, setting one's head straight especially after a big life event, and opening new beautiful chapters - for this and so many other reasons I find ADV touring (and moto travel in general) to be nothing short of therapy. It requires discipline, tact, diplomacy, strength, courage, endurance, knowledge, and an open mind.
      As for the Futura, I have been looking for that bike for some time now. I test rode one but did not buy it - a little rough around the edges and I know they have rectifier problems. But otherwise it's a neat concept.- big Twin sport touring bike with styling matching the name, and color matched panniers and single sided swing arm - what's not to like. I will be cautious when looking to buy one - if you have any main pointers about what to watch out for, that would be appreciated. I am hoping to add that review to my growing sport touring category - I have already reviewed the Triumph Sprint ST, and have the Honda VFR in mind next.
      So you say you got used to the blinkers on each side and that it was better - in which way better, may I ask? What did I miss about it - how does it grow on you? I just feel like the original method was completely adequate.- but you say this is better so I am curious as to why/how.
      I am glad to hear you will be back on the road shortly on such. mean machine as well. The GS line is gorgeous, especially the special Rally ones. BMW keeps turning out really beautiful bikes for the most part) and I have become a fan, although at the moment I only own one alongside 4 Hondas (3 of the Gold Wings, one of which is 1979).
      Please stay tuned for that review - I just picked it up and it needs a lot of work - I aim to restore it completely to the original condition - it's absolutely stunning in royal blue, but it needs some TLC.
      Stay safe, and thanks for being here - nice to meet you and I look forward to hearing from you in future videos. Cheers - Nik

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours Hi Nik,
      It’s Peter, sorry for some unknown reason I got logged on via another account of mine. It’s great to hear how bikes have influenced our significant life events. You’re really lucky to live where you do (civil unrest not withstanding!) I lived out in Santa Barbara, for 3 months back in 1979. CA is such a beautiful state.
      I found the indicators were intuitive because that was the way I’m turning the bars so it made sense. Additionally, skateboarding, martial arts and football (soccer) has taken its toll causing a pretty bad case of arthritis all over, but not enough to stop me still playing footie or buying a bike! What it does mean is I don’t have the flexibility in my left thumb needed to operate the traditional blinker switch. Just pushing my thumb forward is a lot less of a contortion for me. Perhaps because you’re not similarly incapacitated it’s a faff for you!
      As for the Futura, it is a beautiful looking bike, but reliability was awful. Perhaps you might be luckier than me, but the main problem to be aware of was the clocks when starting up dancing round, but then not resetting so you had maybe 60mph and 3,000revs showing when standing still. It was only the electrics that I had a problem with, but it wasn’t the bike that disappointed but the after sales. That won’t be an issue for you. Let me know how you get on. Stay safe and take care!

      @@RT-VIEW_FROM_A_PILLION apologies for the tardy response, I am somehow just seeing this now. I appreciate your message. I also appreciate hearing the opposite perspective re: blinkers - it truly is a love hate type of arrangement, but I never considered those issues you raised as a possibility - very interesting.
      I have not been able to find the Futura, and I've heard of the rectifier problems, and other electrical issues, and have since looked at the Caponord, but dang that bike is top heavy - Thanks for being here and I appreciate your time to respond to me - Speaking of 1979 - I just picked up a honda Goldwing form that era - what a machine!

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours hi there, no problem, the Futura and Caponord used the same V twin engine and they both had awful centres of gravity. Once coming back from work with both panniers full of exam marking, I thought I’d put the side stand down. Unfortunately, I hadn’t and once the Futura was passed a very small angle leaning, it would crash to the floor. I got trapped under it, and my ex wife and kids had to lift it enough to get my leg out. Nightmare bike!

    Shifting tip! I installed sealed roller bearings with a spacer in the shifter arm pivot. When shifting put a little preload on the shifter before using the clutch. With practice you get much smother shifts.

    Thanks for sharing a very thorough review of the amazing BMW K1200S. I have ridden about 350,000 miles on sport bikes in USA / Canada / France / UK and Spain over the years. I purchased used 2008 K1200S in Austin Texas in 2010 with only 6,000 miles, mint condition for about U$10,500. ( the bike was close to US$ 17,000 new).
    I then took some time off work between jobs, and rode 17,500 miles over 4 1/2 months on back roads only from Texas, to New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Canada-Alberta, British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Oragan, North and South California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and back to Houston Texas and down to the Texas / Mexico boarder. I called it Coast to Coast to Coast, the hard way. South East USA coast to NOrth West USA coast. I did the tip on my then nelly quoted used BMW K1200S, all backroads, no interstate, no freeways. Other than having to get the bike serviced / oil changes, and getting through 3 rear tiers and 2 front tires on the trip, from riding the bike hard, i had no mechanical issues at all. Day after day after day, riding the bike, hard on twisty backroads of western USA and Canada. The bike was just amazing as was the trip. The K1200 was an amazing bike for the trip, some days were over 650 miles in a day of twisty roads some days were 12 plus hours of riding. Some days were well over 106f though Death Valley, and others i saw light snow in the Canadian Rockies, with temps as low as 20f (well below freezing) the heated grips, and the bikes aerodynamics ( along with leathers and gear) kept Co feta be in both cold and the heat. The bike was so smooth, the wind noise was very little even at the 90 miles per hours that l did almost all the trip at......the wind is reduced by the great aerodynamics of BMW, kept one fresh day after day in the saddle. The bike is both super fast, and will get you to over 150mph with ease. This bike is also amazing even in the twisties, once one gets used to the longer wheel base of the K1200S vs most Japanese sports bike. With good tiers (Michelin Pilot Power), one can get those knee sliders to the ground round those Southern Califonia roads, and up in mountains of Montana too.
    The K1200S is in my view, the best of both world, Full on sports, and something that can eat-up 1000km a day at high speed without feeling beat up by the bike and elements. It is a one quiver motorcycle collection. I road many of the roads on the video, and can say that southern Califonia has some of the very best roads and twisties I have ever ridden. In my option SOCAL is Motorcyle Mecca, with super twisty roads, not much traffic, top quality tarmac, (road surface) and very few cops on the back roads, and when one does encounter them, they are really quite accommodating to sports bike riders. This it be said for Arizona, when they will throw you ass in Jail for riding over 100mph as I found out in Flagstaff AZ. I did almost all my trip at 90mph plus all day long, day after day on the K1200s, and the bike put a smile on my face every day.
    Thank you for doing such a comprehensive review of the K1200S bike. Yo7 are completely right, the bike is modern classic, with sweet lines, and I love the fact that you keep it in your living room as “Art” when not in use.
    Never sell your K1200S their is nothing else out there like it anymore. It is so much more performance oriented that the other large sports touring bikes it competed with, but in my mind the K1200S was in a class all or it’s own. Enjoy. Mr. P.

      My goodness, thanks so much for that awesome story - I was practically reliving your trip - it reminded me a bit of my second cross country tour - that time on the VFR, and I agree, the backcountry roads, doing 90 most of the way - feeling great and the amazing sport touring beast taking it all in stride. Spot n about California as the mecca for riding, as well as the police factor which is huge (my pass through Arizona resulted in a $600 ticket - it's as if they are just looking for bikers to fine in those small towns. I am very curious about the K1300S though - this yellow is my favorite color scheme but the red in the 13 would also be great. And reading the previous comments below helps walk owners through some of the main issues with the cluncky shifting - so at least the issue is treatable. Thanks for being here and for sharing your story - moto travel is a lifestyle that has so much to teach. Please stick around, consider subscribing to be notified when I release the following two reviews - also about two amazing BMWs. Great to have you here - Nik

      Yuliya, I found the acceleration pure exhilaration, even just accelerating to legal limits when the speed limit changes. I loved the way I could flick it through bends and then sit upright to use my body as an air brake. Sadly, mine was sold in 2013 after 7 years of amazing stories, great fun and reliable and safe biking. I’ve just got a new style RT, and that’s superb, especially acceleration under dynamic mode. However, the threads Le nature of the K1200S isn’t a thing on an RT.. Safe biking and have many more amazing miles on your K.

      Hi there and welcome to the channel. I heard those abs units can be very pricey - BMW wants $300 just to look at them and change the fluids. I must admit, as much as I liv this bike, I decided to sell (funny enough to a guy who is moving up from his ZZR) and he will be taking it today. This is also a way for me to be excited about returning to it sometime in the future (strange logic I know) especially since my riding time is cut short presently due to the baby duties. I'll look for the 1300 though in the meantime. The red is gorgeous as well. PS, new BMW review premiering today on our Chanel at 2PM Cali time - I hope you join in. Cheers - Nik

    My dream bike someday. I just got back on a bike after 13 years. Got myself an F800GT just to ease myself back into it. I live in Ireland and use it to commute 120 miles into Dublin and home. We deal with a lot of rain, greasy roads and strong winds. Getting a dry road around here is like heaven. Roll on the summer :)

Please.stay tuned for that review, and in the meantime watch my 1200 vfr review since that's a direct competitor and.the bike I ride daily. Cheers and hope you get some.sun soon.

    Excellent review. I have a 2007 K1200S and ride in Ontario, not scenic as you California where I am and a far shorter riding season but I love every minute on it. Your review was bang on. Aside from the clunky gearbox and wacky turn signal switches, this bike will stand the test of time....it's like a classic rock song that every generation will crank up when riding!

    Great review !... I have an "07"..I love this bike!!...you were spot with all your comments...I had exactly the same issue with the clutch lever ... changed the lever.. changed the bike completely !!..the bitting point is almost immediate...I don't have small hands and I found it a strain...new dogleg lever makes a huge difference..I found that the bmw brake lever worked better for me so kept that..and after five years I've got used to the gear box sounding like my old truck...and it's true..they all do it.... Best bike I've ever owned.. looking to get the k1300s anniversary.. with proper indicators & flasher !!..I still have to look for the horn !!.. great review..made me laugh & very informative...all the best from not sunny london Uk... apparently I'm not looking at new bike... I totally agree with you, I’ll even go further and say, after owning five K1200S, it is the best motorcycle BMW has ever made, you mentioned being a little heavy when on it’s side, I found the best MOD for the K1200S is changing the rear tire size to 190/ 55 17, and only use Metzler Roadtec 01, the heavy duty HMWs , the bike will go into turns like crazy ! You need to get use to it though🙏

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours I had a Concourse it was a nice bike, I have had a bunch of bikes, different models, from Honda VFR to Ducati and a YB10 Bimita. The most important item on the sport touring are the correct tires, factory tires are just what they are, factory tires! the tires I suggested are absolutely the best all around tires for them. I just installed a set on my K1200s. One note of caution, the Chinese made versions are by far better than the ones made in Germany. I have been through 8 set already , they are just fabulous

    Hey beautiful and spot on review!
    My father had the red K1200rs '97 bought it at 2000. It was my first bike and I was so excited riding it for 2 years (2018-2020) , BMW was way ahead of its time then . Sadly the connecting rod exploded out of the engine while I was riding it and the bike is useless since we can't find new engine in Greece.
    Finally I bought the K1200S '05 4 months later (May) AND THIS BEAST IS FLYING. I couldn't be more satisfied
    Its so fast yet so light ,also comfortable and the stock exhaust makes a noticeable noise, in my opinion doesn't need changing . The '05 screen has less info (kmh drove , clock , suspension settings , fuel , heat) , the color of luggage isn't an issue for me since I have the silver edition but they are not big enough.
    The windshield needs to be taller indeed and the clutch is exactly as you said, metals hanging eatch other, but you can buy a clutch adjustor (if I say it correctly) and you won't have this problem anymore .
    Blinkers for me are fine I got used to them but they can be a problem for a new into BMW.
    I totally recommend this bike , I have a blast riding it every day and it can do literally everything !!
    Greetings from Greece , Alex

    Nice review, thumbs up. These are getting very reasonably priced in the UK. Starting at say £3K. Always loved the looks but discounted it due to the amount of power, i'm not the best on a bike and running costs. Yours in yellow is actually my favourite colour scheme.You enjoy it!!

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 года назад +1

      Thanks - that is a stellar price for a bike like this. The power is very manageable - if you trust yourself. My problem is that my business insurance is based on my driving record, and one infraction could mean thousands of dollars extra in annual costs, so this really is a bike for those who can afford to pay the fines. If you don't trust yourself with the power, you are wise to admire from afar. Thanks for participating I the conversation. Nik

    Great review!! I was about 33 when it came out and I always thought it was one of the most beautiful bikes ever made. And that yellow black silver color scheme along with a blue and silver found on one of the other BMW's is breathtakingly beautiful. I've had 2 CBRrr 900's, 1 Buell XB9, ZZR1200, DR350, DR650, and two small 125cc dirtbikes for trail riding. Each served a mission but since I haven't had a bike in 4 years I think I'd like a hyper Sport touring bike like the one you just showed. A shame about the clunky shifts so thanks for the heads up, but was always curious about the cantilever front suspension as the scariest part to me is the transition in the turn in, going from hard brake, then easing off brake and trying to settle in the turn. I've only done a few track days and that was 15+ years ago. The ZZR1200 I had was a little porky and I never could get anywhere close to dragging a knee or even hard parts with it as the front end suspension was surprisingly stiff but the forks and head would flex and wonder a bit from all the weight, so it was a funky mix of feelings coming through the bars and frame. I'm sure modern sport touring bikes probably handle incredibly today but I can't justify spending more then 8k for a toy.

Another bike in this same class you might wish to consider is the triumoh sprint st. I've also revoewed it. Two more in the same class of single sided swing arm sport touring bikes with luggage are the VFR ofcourse and the Aprilia Futura. I just picked one up so please stay tuned for that. Its a twin litter bike and has great suspension. Cheers. Nik

    Excellent review as usual thank you, quick one for those who want to change power delivery lower gears low RPM, there is a idle controller/stepper motor attached to the throttle bodies, it has a plunger which is activated and controlled by the ECU to restrict the butterflies opening fully and abruptly in gear 1 2 and i think 3, if confident enough, remove this motor and shim it out away from the throttle bodies by at least 4mm thus preventing the restriction and go ride, this stepper motor was BMW's way of a Mechanical traction control effect first three gears but now with them shimmed out you get full throttle in all gears.

    Great vid! I have one too, a 2008 “Blue Arrow” (silver, black ans blue) It’s the best bike I’ve ever had, and the most comfortable. Regularly tour Europe on it doing big hours on the saddle. You can get bar mounts that fit into the bars at the inner ends, just just have to remove the plastic covers. A web search for BMW K1200s plug ram mount should throw up the best option

    I’ve had two of these bikes, and there’s a secret to smooth out the low gear shift feel. The issue really only exist from 1-2 and 2-3, with the rest of the gears being smooth. To smooth out the low gear shifts, preload the shifter with some weight (slightly lift up the shifter) before the shift, and then shift as usual. Once you master the technique, the shift will be as smooth as butter.
    Overall it’s my favourite bike and I can’t find anything to replace it, so after having two K1200S, I’m now shopping for a 2015 K1300S.

      I decided to keep both because even though they are identical in appearance they have different riding characteristics, the k1200 is very smooth throughout the rpm range and revs more freely, more peak power up top and seems to handle the twisties a little better. The k1300 is an absolute beast in a straight line, making more torque down low it seriously warps you into stupid speeds with the use of the equiped quick shifter. Around town the 13 is very well mannered and handles lower speeds better than the 12 , especially in traffic. There is also a lot less clutch noise compared to the 12. Overall they are both amazing machines that def. Stand out from everything else on the road.

    Hi.. and thanks for the review.. I have had mine now for 4yrs and love it.. yes it is a bmw and the service and cost is different. Here is my two cents: First there is that gear box,, yup sounds/feels like it crashes moving into first. There are a few things that help. A larger slave cylinder reduces the heavy lever and seems to make life better. The addition of a Power commander V does a host of things,, gets rid of low rpm hot stubble,, fills that gap at throttle opening with more lower torque and response.. and options in a quick shift that disappears gear shift clunk... also adjusts for different exhaust and air filters. I wouldn't mind a lower 1st, to deal with crawling in traffic, although getting to highway speed without a shift is fun. Personally, I love the signal light set up.. now.. bit to get used to but that like the bolt heads is a personal preference imho. much like the luggage (though smaller than some) the key and quick on / off rocks for me. You covered much of the bike, the thing that is a pain I think ,, is that CANBUS system.. give me wires that go one place and do one thing.. a heck of a trick to troubleshoot . K, thanks again.. keep up the review. Looking forward to the next one.. (oh,, did you see the youtube of a 500.000km K1200s and rebuild ...?)

I don't have an experience with the heated seat but of course Corbin is a leader in the industry of aftermarket comfort so great to know that it comes highly recommended. Corbin went a step further with this bike and produced the rear seat cowl that incorporates with their seat and provides a sleeker look of the rear and some storage space as well that's lockable. I should have included that in the review now that you mentioned it. If you really like this bike take a look at my other single-sided swingarm sport tourers. One of my favorite BMWs. I had the k1200rs for for years and bought the k1200s. Perfect sport touring bike. More juice, very stable, comfortable. Rode the bike for many 500 mile days, and once rode it back from motogp in Indy to New York in one day. Great on open sweeping roads, but not quick turning enough for real twistiest. Was much better than the k1300, with a longer wheelbase and added weight.

    Good review. I bought my 2006 yellow/black K1200S new in 06 and have 28K miles on it. It has been a good bike but now the clutch basket has a bad rattle and will need to be replaced. Runs good and no other problems with it. I have had many many bikes. I'm 63 now and I was a Honda mechanic in my early 20's. Raced motocross, road, and been riding since 10 years old. I have a long history with bikes (Owned Ducati, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Harley) and I would say that it's in my top three or four. Likes: riding position (comfortable yet sporty), long wheelbase=stable and smooth, heated grips and DC plug for vest onboard=all weather bike, good gas mileage for a liter bike, ABS plus novel front suspension = best stopping bike I've ever ridden (it will out brake your ability to hang on), obviously fast and handles great, and I like the bags they're versatile, once I got used to the turn signals I wouldn't go back to Japanese style.. Dislikes: seat isn't that great. Mine is cracking also. Shifting is clunky, the "straps under the seat" are the only "helmet holders" and they suck ass (no dedicated helmet lock is a bad oversight). Overall 9/10. As a sport/tourer it's a 10/10 IMO. I'm disappointed the clutch basket is bad at such low miles but everything else is holding up. Best bikes I've owned (for reference): 79 CBX (I'm buying a triple wide plot so she can go with me to the next life), 85 Gamma ( should not have sold it!), 98 Ducati 916, 79 Yamaha Daytona Special RD400 (wish I kept it), 2003 Bandit 1200S (keeper), and I won't sell the K1200S either. :)

    Hi there, thank you for your great and truthful review. First let me congratulate you and your wife with your beautiful newborn baby, that must be a great feeling too!
    I have started riding again since almost 20 years due to illness and therefore my financial situation. I am now glad to tell you that I own a bmw k1200gt from 2004 (k41). In order to save costs I do 90% of the maintenance myself and I must say it gives me a very satisfying feeling as well. As the bike is now, as it wasn't, in tip top condition I am looking for an upgrade and my interest has gone out to the k12/1300s. I want a bike that is fairly cheap to buy is able to do long and fast highway speeds (I live near the German border) and is also able to take on a passenger and/or luggage for a few days. Furthermore I do a lot of German /Austrian twisties, meaning roads with say a maximum speed of around 20 to 80 mph and lots of beautiful, addictive curves. I like the power but how good is it at doing the somewhat slower corners. I know it is always going to be a compromise between speed and handling, but is this the bike for me, I would like your opinion....

      Hi there! Welcome to the channel - thanks for participating in the conversation. I am very happy you found the video useful and helpful. Welcome back to riding!!! That is very exciting. I think you can't go wrong with the K12/1300S - especially where you are located, with all the amazing twisties near the border of the Alps, and also, with the Autobahn (and Nurburgring Race Track as well). I think this bike was made in Bavaria for Bavarian sceneries so I think it's perfect for that. Often I lament why we don't have the ability to ride this beast to its full potential here in the US, as you do there in Germany. Be sure to review the comments to this video since they are all by current owners who give some very useful tips on some of the negatives I've found with this bike. Other than that I think you'll love it! Slower corners are fine, although it's a bit heavier in comparison with a dedicated sport bike. Keep in mind that it has a long wheelbase so that also makes turning a bit harder at slower speeds. I also noticed that moving it around the garage or in front of the house takes a long time since the radius is so large - it need slots of space. But as soon as it gets going, it loves the twisties, so you'll find no problems there - even with a passenger. And the expandable luggage accommodate a full size helmets as well. I think this will be a great bike for you. Next time I am in my beloved Munchen, I will shoot you a message - I lived there, and on Konstanz Lake as well and love that part of the country. Cheers - Nik

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching. I would say the speed wobbles are not the norm in either system and indicate that something is not right - for my concourse as of late I had the same issues since the bike is so heavy, and it has inverted traditional forks, but the problem was a wore out front tire. The new tire and balancing made the wobble go away. Another problem might be in the head bearing which might need to be replaced. Wobbles are normal for motorcycles with sidecars but not for regular bikes. Another wobble I used to have was resolved by removing all the weights from the front wheel and adding in the great product called Ride On - which plugs and balances the tire form the inside. I hope that resolves your issue - I'd start there first. If you are considering this bike please look at my other reviews of competitors in the sport touring class. My concourse review is in the making as well if that is a bike you might be considering.

      @@rvr4617 to be very honest, all the owners of the k1200s I've met have been middle aged men. It also has to do with the price tag versus disposable income and maintenance cost of the bmW. But for the ultimate in touring I'd still opt for the gold wing, the more naked version without the touring pack. I've reviewed my gen 1 and gen 5 gold wings and they are the ultimate. Obviously quite different than the sport tourers but much sportier than lots of folks tend to think. But I definitely always was the youngest GW owner in the group. This colour combo was the most beautiful colour and no later colour of k1200s/k1300s came close to that. I bought it in 2005, did about 20.000 miles on it, then sold it just because of some physical problems (knees, hips…) and need for more upright position. But now, even being older, I would like to have it back in my garage. It was the best looking bike and the most enjoyable motorcycle I have ever had (and I had/have some…).

    Hi bud from South Africa 🇿🇦. I also owned the exact same spec and color K1200s in 05 when launched. Moved over to the K1300s in 2012. Recently owned the K16GT which I sold a week ago.
    I tried the K16GT and the bagger for 3 years and I just cannot get used to the weight. I miss the K13 so much, busy negotiating on a red one. Not sure why bmw stop production on these beautiful bikes. They say the K16GT replaced the K13, but to me, they not even close to comparison. Imagine how complete the K13 would have been now, if it was still manufactured with the latest updates. It would have been king of sport touring motorcycles. I even tired the new busa for a few months, but still not as good as the K13.
    Loved your review, ride safe buddy.

I agree that the 16 is an entirely different motorcycle, albeit very sexy indeed. I'm riding the Honda vfr1200f at the moment, pearl white with 3 piece luggage. Much more refined, very fast and satisfying, and beautiful. The BMW is still more attractive to me bit without the luggage option the Honda takes the cake for long term ownership. Wow love the bike and that color combo man! Totally forgot about this bike. Reminded me of my 2000 CBR 1000RR back in the day that had the rare bumblebee color scheme back when I lived in NoCal and loved it! I lusted after one of these years ago but they were just asking too much. BMW always had these quirky things i.e turn signals, Duolever suspension and such and not so sensible bags but if you can live with them, they will eat miles of pavement with no problem. But to me, my beautiful 2007 Honda VFR is the one. She wears the 25th Ann. Ed colors, has color coordinated hard bags (I believe Givi makes it for them), all white wheels with the super rare 8 spoke rear wheel from the 2000 yr model. Coupled with the single sided swingarm and she stands out and always get comps from people. Super reliable, shifts butter smooth, comfortable and handles like a 600 (now that she has a new rear suspension and a fresh front end). And of course, that awesome sounding V-4 engine! Between her and Aprilias' V4, nothing sounds sweeter. The only thing she's missing is a proper electronic cruise control. But keep riding safe brother, great video and congrats on the new baby!

      Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. I'm glad you liked the review. And yes, I remember the mean looking fire blade. These are two very different bikes in virtue of their use, their stance, their weights etc. They serve different purposes and your liable to get tired quickly on the fire blade. As for the vfr, that sounds like a perfect combination. That is literally one of my all-time favorite motorcycles. So much so, that I ride that now myself. A white one though, with full matching luggage including the top case. They are so useful. I can ride to the airport, park it there and leave my letters and fly out. I also love the V4 VTech. And I'm familiar with the seven-spoked wheel because my previous VFR had the same setup although it was red and the wheel was black. Looks like we enjoy the same motorcycles. Do you happen to be in southern california? I ask because I'd like to review this VFR and compare it to the anniversary edition colors

I look forward to that experience, it's just that money buys so much bike with other brands, I've always been curious as to why KTM's are so expensive. I have no experience with the Super duke but it is an interesting design. Thanks for chiming in and my greetings to you and our lovely A2. I do miss it often.

    Thank you for the video and your passion for motorcycles! I've been a dirtbike/atv rider since I was a kid and have had a motorcycle since 18! My first two bikes were R6s, followed by a 750 shadow, 1100 v-star custom and currently a victory kingpin. I rented an FJR1300 for my 40th bday this year and have been bitten by the sport-tourer bug... Im looking into something like an FJR1300, but preferably 6 speeds, I do really like the VFR800s, then I saw this K1200S! Beautiful motorcycle! Were there any major changes to the 1300? Is there any difference in the shifting or still "clunky" like you mention about the 1200? Thanks!

      Thanks for watching and taking the time. I replaced my bmw with the competition, honda vfr1200 (ps run through my list for other sprot tourer I've reviewed). The honda is much more refined and fantastic luggage. Please stay tuned for that review. Last week I picked up a k1300, however woth the hannigan sidecar seen at the end of this video. It still shifts clunky and if you read through the comments here, there seems to be a way around it. The 1300 is the tri colored blue, red and white, and sp is the sidecar. Rides like a bullet but I still think the vfr1200 is a more desirable bike for me.

      @pegasusmotorcycletours I will look forward to that! I have looked into the vfr1200 as well. However, some reviewers say it lost some of the VFR traditional feel and look and was designed as a sport tourer yet has a smaller gas tank than previous models. Do you find time between re-fueling to be short? I can imagine that the extra 400cc displacement on an already refined machine makes a nice difference! I'll look into your other sports tour videos as well. Thanks for the great content and response!

    Just picked one up (2008, same colors) for $3300 winter splinter deal #feelingblessed lol Btw, I'll take 167hp and a clunky gear shifter for that much money lol
    This bike reminds me of my VFR1200F. I loved that bike! Took it from NYC to Daytona and then from there to Austin MotoGP in 2016, it eats up miles like there is no tomorrow. I heard that ergonomics on K1200S are even better, can't wait to take her for a spin after the freaking snow melts away.
    I have been Califonia Dreaming too for quite some time now and San Diego is my first love in Cali. Last time I was there in 2018 it looked a bit overly congested, a lot of cagers on the road, more than previous years. Is that still the case?

      Thanks for being here and glad to have you and your question. We'll, this is a physically large, heavy (in comoprison to sport bikes) and long motorcycle. It's hard to say if you'll find it cramped for your size until you sit on one and take it for a spin. That's really the only way to know, and to see how inclined your upper body will be because it is a more aggressive stance than the gs line. For comparison though, I'm 172cm and 80kg, and it fits me great. As for the power, it is very managable and take. It's there when you need por want it, but it's not twitchy or jerkey - it doesnt come as a surprise. So if you are riding two up mostly, the extra weight will be well met with the extra power. The passanger also doesnt sit too far up behind you so I think she will enjoy it. Othwer bikes to consoder for you might be the VFR1200, the Kawasaki Concourse and 1400, and the Yamaha 1300FJR if you wish to ride the sport touring class. Honda males a 1300 st police use here in some parts of the US. Othwrrwise a Gold wing is always an awesome option, and they make the special model with the lower wind screen and no rear trunk which give it a much sporty look. The power delivery is smooth as butter. I made a review of my yellow gold wing as well so hopefully it helps you out. Where are you writing from? Around 11:30 you speak of a delay in throttle response. That is due to a solenoid which will hold the throttle cable for a little bit and then after a second give you full power. You can remove it and have the full control of you would like :)

    • @JorisBoers
      @JorisBoers 3 года назад

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours what I gathered from it is that the solenoid is placed there as a safety feature. Because if you are turning or putting on the turning signal and with those actions twist the throttle a bit you won't shoot away but remain on the road.
      Maybe BMW has had a different idea behind it but this is what I come up with
      But it is placed between the engine and the throttle cable, where the cable ends in the engine bassicly, can't find it on the schematics right now but it is there :)

    You mentioned the weight of the shaft drive vs chain drive being a detractor. In some cases, maybe. But to use a bike such as the VFR800 as you did, the wet weight of the K1200 is actually less than the VFR. I've owned both and the BMW is a much more refined bike, and overall, certainly my pick. The only thing the VFR has over the K Bike is... well, who can deny Honda reliability? Even more so if Honda hadn't put those cam chains in the VFR.

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  2 года назад +1

      Now I have to correct you because to my understanding a 2006 VFR has a wet weight that's 10 lbs less than the 547 curb weight of the K 1200. But that's a minuscule difference compared to the better refined and more powerful BMW. We definitely agree there. Although I am a fan of the VTech engine. As well as the noise the two extra valves per cylinder make when they open that's how I believe 6.6 RPM.

      @@SinnerSince1962 The best thing about this channel from me is the possibility to learn from others, so my sincere thanks for participating in the conversation. The more accurate comparison of course would have been with the VFR1200 - but soon -the garage is too full at the moment. Cheers. Nik

    Do you still have Your K1200S? I've for a K1300s now which shifts smoother and behaves better at low speeds. Love my K bikes, have put aeound 20,000 miles on them in the last year. Recently rid a Tuono V4 and a M109 Boulevard. They were both nice, but I prefer the mighty K.

    looking to get a 09 K1200s that seems to be in great shape and has been well maintained but has 55k miles on the clock. Any advice?

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 года назад +2

      55k on a BMW is not to much so long as it has been maintained properly. This means regular visits to the dealership. Receipts are the only proof unless the dealer has records as well. These bikes have issues with the ABS system which can be in the thousands to repair so be sure to inquire - otherwise 55k is not too many miles for the BMW, especially if the bike hasn't changed hands too much. But in all honestly I do not purchase motorcycle with more than 30k on the clock. That is my personal heuristic because I also don't tend to keep them for long so they are harder to sell with more miles that that. Good luck.

    The power delivery lag you noted is possibly due to the shaft drive?

      I think you are correct. I really appreciate you taking the time to participate in the conversation. I think you'll be happy to know that I just a few days ago picked up the Aprilia contender, in the sport touring single-sided swingarm World, a 2002 Futura. It's in mint condition an absolute joy to ride. Filming is taking place this weekend so I'm hoping to catch you in that review in the near future for your opinion. And if you haven't seen it yet, please do take a look at my Sprint ST review, another notable contender in this awesome class. Be will in the meantime and until then. Nik

      I personally have no experience with the ST1300 but people swear by them as well as the FJ1300 Yamaha. Kawasaki Concours also provides the Comfort without sacrificing the athleticism of the motorcycle but I think for me The Styling and the innovative suspension design made this motorcycle in particular so aplealing. Its deffinitely the most sporty out of the bunch. They are very smooth and on vibrate very much at all, and The Stance is not overly aggressive on your wrist so you're not going to be aggravating your carpal tunnel like you would on a different world dedicated sport motorcycle. And in any case if you see it doesn't work for you these always sell easily. I can't imagine anybody being disappointed with this motorcycle, so I say go for it and please do let me know your opinions when you snatched one. In an alternative, there's always the mighty Goldwing, another motorcycle I own proudly and have reviewed as the King of the Road.

    IMO BMW, succeeded on the outside but failed on the inside with numerous design flaws to include the clutch, fuel indicator, oil level indicator, an ABS liability and electronics that even require reset when changing a headlamp. An oil filter placement that can defy access. And then discover you need a separate tool set specifically to the bike. When it runs, it's a beauty, but deep pockets to keep it running.

      I hear you on the stress if bmw ownership. I own the sidecar rig seen on the photo toward the end of the review and because of the wring for the sidecar blinker and because of the tpm in the now all car tires for the bike and sidecar I can't her rig is the service indicator. I hate that bnw makes you have to pay a trip to them for stuff like that.

    Moving from an R1 and wanting something less hyper and more comfortable. Torn between the K1200S and the Honda VFR1200, which is the better bike?

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 года назад +1

      Thats a great comparison, but a difficult question to answer. Having both brands I can say that the Hondas are very reliable and easy to work on. If this is an issue that applies to yoy, the honda will not dissapoint. I rarely see them on the road and wish they offered more colors. The bmw does things differently, and the suspension is awesome. Both have power to spare. The luggage is arguably better on the vfr. The only way to know is to sit down on both and ride them. See if you can rent them on riders share or twisted road. I hope this helps.

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours great advice, we don't really have much in the way of motorcycle share/rentals where I am in Australia. I think the indicator issue alone might bug me quite a bit but love the sound of the suspension performance. Iv got some thinking to do but thankyou for the great review it has helped very much.
