- "Before it meant "sleeping vision" Old English swefn meant "sleep," as did a great many Indo-European "dream" nouns originally, such as Lithuanian sapnas, Old Church Slavonic sunu, and the Romanic words (French songe, Spanish sueño, Italian sogno all from Latin somnium. All of these (including Old English swefn) are from PIE *swep-no-, which also is the source of Greek hypnos (from PIE root *swep- "to sleep")."

I'm sure there are rules to follow when writing Medieval-type songs, but I don't know them.
I didn't even search.
At all. I just changed the sound setting to harpsichord. HA.
And here we are.
It would probably sound better sung by a man.
But anyway.
wyscan = wish
I think the rest is obvious.
www.etymonline.com is great for etymology of English words
"To wyscan beget you
is all I must do"
That's the thing, isn't it. To want to sleep is a world away from wanting to want to sleep.
Anyway, I sleep just fine.
This was written for someone else.
-----------------------
Swefn, swete swefn
Tis you that I seek
Elusive sly sprite
and fikel-tongued nimphe
All of the folc,
they say that it's true
To wyscan beget you,
is all I must do
Yet here I wander
Yonder and there
And still cannot grasp
My maiden so fair
And so once again
to bed I must go
Contynuen thus,
Awake and alone
Only the dead would know the flow of useless dialects long past... you and your curious honour to the roots of civilization.
I liked it better when you were angry.
May I introduce you to vaers wonder?
I'm heading to Dublin next week. I'll sing it for you if you like. 😃
@@donningarmour2873 hey girl!
Soon I b Swefn to the Oldies!
What a nice surprise find on RUclips today.
Oh, what a lovely thing to say.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. :)
I've got one word for you.... Bardcore!
Nice work Dove that formerly danced .
Thank you Disco Drew :)
She still dances in our hearts...
@@dove4070 did you change because people kept referring to you as D.D, the little sister of Dexter in Dexter's Lab(American cartoon from the late 1990's, when you were an even more baby-ful baby sister)?
I've decided that your songs would be perfect around the campfire while watching the flames dance. Love this tune for sure.
Aw, that's so nice. Thank you Steve
Your voice is wonderful, a joy to hear 😍.
Thank you so much Jim :)
Thank you this, beautiful.
Thank you European Man! :)
This was beautiful, good job!
Hey you! Thank you so much! :)
@@dove4070 It's been a while! I hope you're doing well! :D
Very nicely done, considering its ad-hoc nature! It's cool to see you like ancient European tongues alongside your Spanish and Irish. For me, my favourite Middle English poem is the Agincourt Carol. It even rhymes, but that's lost if you sing it with a modern English pronunciation (and unfortunately, the only person on YT that had a video showing that deleted her channel).
Hey DeFactoLeader! Thank you!
I didn't know that poem, but I will look it up. And that's a pity that the video got deleted. :(
God bless the Perfect Little Sister Carol of Dancing Dove Divinity.
You get around, don't you?
@@donningarmour2873 I like my little baby sister from another mother and species. Look through her old videos; I have been here for a while.
:)
That was a nice little tune. :)
Hi Veracity Trigger!
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
@@dove4070 Not sleeping much eh? Are you traveling around? I would like to I just don't have anything planned right now.
So if I spelled continuing "contynuen" on a spelling test, I wouldn't necessarily be wrong!
Exactly.
Thanks Dove
Thanks High King!
Mmm, wholesome

Different, but lovely nevertheless.

I had a crack at Middle English many years ago, it was like putting my brain through a mangle; I found Finnegan's Wake an easier read.
Now that's saying something!
Some of the words are so beautiful though.
@@dove4070 Indeed, most of them are; I remember comforting my children when they cried with the word "ushputtle", no idea what it means, but it did the trick.
What an excellent word!
And that's so sweet!
@@dove4070 I hope things are going well for you and that the next opus isn't too far off. You've no doubt noticed that the whole world is in a state of chassis, but let's not dwell on that now.
