In all honestly this hunt is the most fun you can have and still be legal I believe (I wanted to say with your clothes' on but that might have been weird). To share my world and Sitka blacktail with Jim Heffelfinger after years of discussion was wonderful. The comradery between Jim and I and Marcus was perfect. Karen Petersen, my lovely bride kept us well fed with wonderful table fare. We hunted hard and enjoyed our time. Jim Heffelfinger deserves a rematch....the invite is open. I wait...

I love how genuinely excited Handsome Jim is to share the landscape he knows so well. You can just tell how he wants to point out and share all of it. That's something special.

Clearly there's some great editing, but for sure Marcus' footage is incredible. He's an artist - just a step up from the crowd. I never look for editing credits but it's always obvious who the photographers are.

Marcus... How in the world were you able to film anything? I'm incredibly thankful you're there doing so. It's not just the knowledge that these two men have (obviously, they have their Doctoral Degrees), it's how excited and passionate they are and how willing they want to share and want to learn that I find so addicting. Hunting with them isn't just hunting, it's a world class education. Thank you for sharing this.

Poor Marcus... rough duty, back in Alaska once again ! This should be a fine adventure to watch unfold. When I saw that roast, I was like... "Ok, what will the rest of you be eating for dinner?" I'd be headed for venison coma! What a gorgeous roast!

Loved Rain Deer back when it came out and loved this too. Pretty much will watch anything Randy puts out and Jim Baichtal should just change his last name to Blacktail (or at least lie and say Baichtal is German for Blacktail) ;) The guy just knows deer. Love watching the few vids of him out there and hearing him on podcast. I get to chase a different type of blacktail here in Northwestern Oregon but we still chase them mostly in rather "moist" conditions and call them the grey ghosts of the forest.

Randy - this was a great episode despite your absence. You need to get Mrs. Baichtal a yeti cooler to rest her roasts in, and Jim H. some new Sitka gear. He was sticking out like soar thumb compared to jim b in that cover. And obviously a towel is not going to hold the heat like a ridiculously overpriced cooler will...

As I have understood it, Blacktail are a hybrid of Columbian Whitetail (What Lewis and Clark mostly saw...and probably as good as extinct, though populations certainly still exist...for now) and Mule Deer. Sitka are a sub-species by isolation of that hybrid.
Please, correct me if I'm wrong!
Edit: and the rate we are going with habitat change, won't be long til all we have is Eastern Whitetail.

Howa in .308. I'm Old School. :) Howa is a sponsor and that was the first time I held one. No BS, I was impressed! With the custom turret Leupold scope we just dialed 184 yards and smacked it. Second shot (in the rain) hit the lead splatter of the first. Bolt is very smooth, cerakote is durable, and if it were mine, it would have my YHM suppressor on the threaded barrel.
