    Dinoflagellate are notorious in reef aquarium, it's a microscopic pest that is hard to remove and control from saltwater tank.
    But this isn't my first encounter, last time blackout alone was enough to kill them all, but this time I'm trying a different method to document the effectiveness.

    Tips vs. Dinoflagellates (Copy/Paste from Ep.49)
    - Fresh Carbon
    - UV light (if your species free-swimming at night)
    - High pH
    - Blackout 3-4 days (no light source at all)
    *Blackout alone won’t always work, you need to use other tools, they are often in a dormant stage
    - High temperature around 27°C or 82°F
    - Keep Phosphate/Nitrate balanced
    - Bacteria
    - Copepods
    - Hydrogen Peroxyde 3% (1ml for 35L/10g)
    - Silicates (Via diatom bloom)
    - Phytoplankton
    At 5:45 I meant multiple Genera not genus.
    At 12:50 I said Xenia but it's not Xenia.

      I was interested in this, because it seems like a lot of people are having luck by always running their tanks from 80-82F. And 83-84F to kill dino. It is really making me question if we should be running tanks a little warmer unless there is a species need to run it lower than 80ish. I turned the temp on my tank up, and the normal bacteria loved it. but that also would drop the O2. So I turned it down, and I am going to slowly raise it back up over the next week or two once everything settles down.

    For me the keys were nutritent management and adding competition. MB7 and phytoplankton were a huge part of success i think. But in addition i had to decrease nutrient export significantly I pulled by chaeto and stopped the skimmer completely.. My problem was NO3, i couldn't raise it higher than 3 until i started adding Neonitro. Once I got my NO3 to ~10-15 (PO4 was 0.12), it seemed like the Phyto and MB7 started to take control. I added UV but don't know how much it actually did. just my 2 cents of experience. Love the Channel! Good Luck!

    Reduced water change as any water change would make my dinos blow up.
    After the first week with the uv + light changes they seemed to not be spreading more and with time started to vanished. In a month I wasn't able to spot them anymore but kept the UV for a extra while.

    I haven't had dino's, I think my tank is just too sterile and new but if I did I think I would follow your Battle Dino's method and maybe take a paint brush to them during a water change. I have a keen eye and I can get a little carried away, I'm the kind of person that would sit there for a long time to carefully clean. Although I would stop if I was doing more harm than good which is a question I was going to ask. Would a small paint brush be too abrasive to scrub away dinoflagellates from the flesh of Corals? I was thinking of buying one of those make-up brush things with the soft bristles, just ziptie it to a stick. I was thinking it would be cool to find some special brush you could use to carefully clean soft corals like Zoanthids, Cyarina, and fleshy coral in case you were in a situation were you needed to scrub a film algae or diatoms or dinoflagellates. I can see it now "Ecotech Rebrands $200 Make-Up Brush, Sells for $400 as Coral Cleaner"

    • @AquaSplendor
      @AquaSplendor  3 года назад +1

      I would say, don't do this. Don't use brush, Dinoflagellate don't care at all, its a waste of time, they will just back eventually, you are just moving the problem 1 cm away.
      They way I deal with them is creating an environnement where they are having hard time meanwhile other microorganisms start to take their place.
      And of course, always thrive to stability, which is tricky in nano (I still haven't found "my perfect routine" yet. More coral to come and they will have an big impact. After that will see how to tweak the food and water change.

    The uv will kill the Phytoplankton, so adding it while using the uv it might not be the best aproach, I did battle my Dinos in my tank just with the uv light but the strain I had was diferent, mine was the one that is spars trough the water column (The whole tank was brown also known as red tide), took me 3 months to figure it out, everything died, but the palythoas mutuki (impressed on how hardy this guys are). Good luck with those motherfu....

  • @DanielVazquez
    @DanielVazquez 3 года назад

    I have experienced outbreaks in my tank in the past and the prime cause is, believe it or not, water too clean for a relatively new tank (meaning very low nutrients in a newly established system) !! The solution that has worked for me is pretty simple: dirt up the tank! The idea is to provide excess nutrients to photosynthetic algae (any type of green algae) so it can grow and thrive and then it will eventually starve the dinos. You can increase your nitrates and phosphate levels naturally by adding more food than usual but it takes from weeks to months to fix. So, in order to expedite the process I dose nitrates and phosphates in a controlled fashion. This approach is only recommended to the experienced aquarist as any dosing error could be fatal to the livestock. Still, I swear by it. Of course, this approach will generate a new problem: algae bloom, but that's a way easier problem to solve later. Do your research and do what you feel will work the best for you.

    • @DanielVazquez
      @DanielVazquez 3 года назад

      Ah, and a UV sterilizer can accelerate the process and it also help in icky outbreaks as well so it's worth investing in a good one (check wattage for your tank volume)
