Just came back to see this video I liked in 2016. I also got Misawa as my first base (3D1X2 to now 1D771A, reflecting back it's a GOAT'd assignment. My enlistment ends in January. 6 years was definitely well worth it, 4 years retainability is pretty amazing for overseas assignments and adding time to complete more schooling, especially if you clowned around for 2 years+ on your 4 year. If anyone reads this comment 2022+. Before you sign up , for the Air Force in general. Undestand what you are saying you are willing to do (damn near anything). You have a voice, use it and be self-aware. It's ok to be a clown, as long as you know you are.
This is a great video. My husband is a 3D1X1, and I'm joining the AF next year. I saw this position online and I'm considering it. Thanks for the insight.
Sup bro, its Brown. The Same Basic/Tech School/Japan. Had no idea u made a video on Cyber Trans. Literally googled for my CDC for some refresher stuff and thought i saw your face on the video on the SECOND link...lol, good shit man.
I served as a tech in GPS Master Control in the Air Force. I am now a comm tech in the oil and gas industry making above $80k (without degree or a CCNA). I am working my way towards a CCNA and CISSP which will help with a promotion. I also had fun as a comm tech working with BNSF Railway, but got curious about working with oil companies. There are definitely many jobs in Networking that make good money.
definitely. i think i overstated that in the video a bit. i have a few friends making really good money in the private sector now. my issue was, when i made this video, was that i knew a LOT of lazy people who thought they would simply land an amazing job simply because they were enlisted. i guess the point i was trying to make was, is that you really need to actually know what you are doing in order to make decent money (usually)
This is a great and informative video. I actually just enlisted today and chose Cyber Transport, but this video helped me figure out what I was getting myself into. Thanks so much!
I worked with a guy who spent 6 years in the Air Force as Cyber Transport. He got his CCNA and CCNP and moved to New York where he is now making $110K/year. In a few months I will be getting out after 4 years with my CCNA, and the jobs I am looking at start at $72K, and those are the jobs that don't require the clearance. There is no AFSC with better civilian marketability than this one, not counting Air Traffic Controllers and Medical fields. The only close second would be certain administrative fields such as Contracting.
I thought I replied to this but guess not. Yes I know multiple people who have left the service and started very nice civilian careers ($80k+ starting)
I leave Nov. 4th for basic, then off to Keesler for Cyber Transport Systems and I am super excited! Thanks for this video and info! It's got me even more excited!
*LONG VIDEOS ARE DOPE* keep it up 👍 we need the detail to make an informed decision!! Videos like this gives us new recruits way more information than a google search or a recruiter will tell us!!
thank you! cyber transport was at the top, my second choice was client systems, then i think i had some intelligence job, nuclear weapons (no idea what they do), and a couple other jobs that were kind of filler that I would not have taken under any circumstance. there were only like 5 jobs i would have taken if they were offered - cyber trans, client systems, loadmaster (got DQ'd), Linguist (failed the test), and intel. i don't think i would have taken anything else, so i got pretty lucky.
Hey, i'm currently in tech for this job at Keesler. The tech school for this job is only about 6 months now, i'm in block 6 of Bryan Hall and i graduate April 21st, can't wait..........
You will learn the basics in tech school as well as quite a bit of other stuff that doesn't really have anything to do with your job. There were tons of people that went through the course (when I was there) that had no history of computer training, and they did fine, but I WOULD suggest at least learning the very basic stuff just to make it easier when you are there. All in all though, it's not very hard to pass tech school for this job.
I know this video is a bit old however at 5:05 when you talked about Secret Clearance. You have no idea how valuable it is lol. If you wish to get a job at one of the Space/Defense Companies (Boeing, Lockheed, Northrop) you're pretty much golden. If you get a Computer Science or Engineering degree they'll pretty beg for you to go to them.
Are you guys strictly a day job as in like 8-4 Mon-Fri? i have been Security Forces for the past 5 long years and 3 of the 5yrs have been night shift. My FTA window opens in 2 weeks to crosstrain and this is on the top of my list. I just cant go back to nights...
+s10v8dude Other than exercises/other stupid military stuff, yes. I worked 7:30-4:30pm (9:00-4:30 on PT days) for 3 years, with the exception of exercises, etc. So 95% of the time I worked 7:30/9:00-4:30.
Great vid ! Want to enlist in the Air Force in the (3D) field. I enjoy networking aswell, LAN Infrastructure installation is something i really enjoy doing/working on (putting in patch panels, running ethernet cable, installing switches, routers, wall jacks etc...) basically the “hands on” portion. Is Cyber Transport Systems the 3D field I should be aiming for ? Based on what I want to do?
I originally got this job. but I ended up losing it due to having to be held back for something. now I got Pmel. I'm so pissed. Hopefully Pmel isn't like a step down.
:( I would not recommend taking a job that you aren't totally psyched about. Easier said than done, I know... Nothing is permanent until you sign your papers the day/the day before you go to basic. I don't know if I would have made it through basic if it was to get a job I didn't really want
Besides tech school, have you taken any other classes that correlate to the IT field??? Are there any classes in the air force that you can take that deal with the IT field, so you can like enhance your skills???I think you said you saw people pursuing IT degrees while in. Are they taking classes online or going to nearby colleges??? Just curious, any information would be great.
I thought I answered this but I guess not. No, I haven't taken any classes that correlate to the IT field, but that's mostly due to my own disinterest in the field. It's kinda fascinating, but kinda boring at the same time. IT isn't exactly my cup of tea, which I know isn't a popular opinion to have mostly because of the bundles of money you can make it you're any good at IT. With that said, yes, you can further your education in pretty much any way you wish while serving in the military. I know a few people who are furthering their careers by going to classes that correspond with IT. I know a few people who are also chasing their CCENT/CCNA certifications so when they get out they can have a better chance at obtaining a decent paying job. This is easily possible. Most people I know take classes online, but that's mostly because I'm serving overseas - the "brick and mortar" style classes aren't really available as much over here as they are in the states. If you go to school in the states, you can go to any school you want. You can do that over here, too, but your selection is much less because you're living in a non english speaking country. So yes, basically. Yes to all of your questions.
cyber systems operations goes to the same tech school, I believe. they are in a different squadron (or were when I was there), but all the rules are essentially the same. not sure of the length but I'm sure it's shorter than 3d1x2
Very informative and spot on on this job, I've been researching about this job and have been considering it since it was on my top list of jobs that I'm trying to get in and qualified for. Do you know if this job is related to 3D1X1 (Client Systems), 3D0X2 (Cyber Systems), if not do you have any information on these jobs, but I would assume that you guys work with a lot of other airmen in this field too right in Cyberspace Support under support?
+Shadowfury I worked with 3D1X1's a lot, they basically handled the software side while we worked with everything behind the wall (switches, routers, cabling, etc.) I would recommend 3D1X2 over any other entry-level Cyberspace job.
@mysticstrider oh jeez man, I didnt really study much, but I'm only 17 I leave in August, highschool must've helped they sell books that have all the stuff on the asvab
I want to join the Air Force but I have no specific job in mind. Do you need to have a lot of tech knowledge beforehand or do they teach you what you need to know in tech school? Also, do you think I would hate this job if I don't really have a huge interest in networking?
No, you can go in with knowing nothing but you have to (or had to, it was a while ago) score pretty high on the electronics portion of the ASVAB in order to qualify for most tech-related jobs, including this one. If you dislike networking, you will dislike this job. However, if you have no experience with networking, you might find that it becomes incredibly interesting as you delve deeper into the subject. Networking is incredibly deep and impossibly complex. Didn't really have that kind of draw for me, but a lot of people I worked with became obsessed with it over time.
saveround Oh okay, thanks for the advice. Most of the jobs I'm looking at like this one and PMEL require a good score in electronics. I don't really know much about electronics so do you know what I can expect on the test or what to study?
Very informative video, thank you for the information. I leave in the for basic training in the next month with this job booked. I understand that thinking about my squadron/specialty is a little down the road, but I wanted to ask how the Air Force determines what specialty you are attached to? My preference would be anything involved with intelligence. Does the Air Force assign you based on your scores, the operational needs, or simply luck of the draw? Thank you again for this amazing video, it has helped me a lot.
+John Minelli You get to choose your job, just don't go "open General" or open anything because you're going to gamble your life and get a job that you won't like. I've seen people who hated their life getting in after choosing open job, especially security forces. People who go open general will likely end up in security forces, which are the military police. Just score well and wait for any openings for the jobs you want no matter how rude or demanding your recruiter tries to get you to sign up.
So how has your experience been so far in this AFSC since posting this video? Do you like it. Still in? I am looking to cross train into 1B4X1 - Cyber Warfare.
What are the civilian equivalents for this job besides doing contracting? I am contemplating joining as a 3D1X2, or as a 3D0X2, and want to know what job opportunities i will have in the future after my enlistment. I would be fine with doing contracting though.
Just got this job today and am super excited. Was wondering if everyone with this job gets top secret clearance? I think I should be fine but would like to know if I can expect top secret, secret, etc.
i think you get top secret, I don't really ever work with secret stuff so i'm not sure. but your family and your friends *will* get interviewed by the government to ensure you're trustworthy. however, that is no guarantee you will work with top secret level stuff.
Hey great vid! You and I seem to be the same person interest wise (wanting to go with computers, Japan, and be happy being single in the dorms! haha). I enlisted for the 6 years and I ship out next week. I'm going in the same field so this really helped. Questions: can you break down what you learn in tech school as far as each month goes? like, 1 month you learn what a computer is, another month you learn what a mouse is... etc.? Thanks!
Everyone in my flight who needed a TS clearance for their job had to spend an entire day during the 4th week going over the TS application. This was a huge pain in the ass, and the administrative people were HUGE dicks, but at least the room was air-conditioned. Later on, I had a meeting during beast week of basic training where a federal agent interviewed me and had me go in-detail over the stuff in my TS application. My advice, if you are worried about passing the clearance: be honest. The biggest red flag is lying about stuff because you don't think you'll get your clearance. Federal agents will look over stuff if you are honest, as long as it isn't murder or trafficking drugs or something felonious like that. I received my TS shortly before I left for my first duty station, IIRC. I'm a student now. I wasn't in love with my job. My friends however are all making bank working as contractors. The opportunity to make good money is there but you gotta make the most of it. The opportunities won't just fall into your lap, you have to prove you are a badass.
I didn't like the overall reduction in freedom and the overall feeling of being pretty worthless due to being enlisted. I felt "stuck" and upward mobility felt pretty small - I could promote, but I would still be enlisted, and I would never really be in charge of anything "big", so what was the point? I guess I thought I was capable of doing bigger things than being "just" enlisted in the Air Force. Also I found the job to be pretty boring after a couple of years. It just wasn't a good fit for me overall. However, I'm very happy that I enlisted and did my 4 years, but I would never re-enlist in any branch. Thank you!
saveround did you have a bachelor's already? I have a bachelor's and am contemplating going officer route or enlisting first and trying to go officer after some time being enlisted. From what I hear to go directly in as officer is very difficult and the board meets very few times per year. Do you have any advice on this? Thanks!
@@ibit1847 I am not an expert. But I would be very cautious about enlisting first with the intention of going officer. There is a very solid chance that would never happen. From what I have seen the Enlisted -> Officer route is also VERY competitive - there are a LOT of enlisted with bachelor's degrees. I would not enlist unless you are comfortable with the idea of staying enlisted for your entire career. There is definitely no guarantee that you would ever be commissioned. I can't say much about going directly to officer, I never really looked into it.
Very insightful information. I seem to have the same interests in you in terms of what I find interesting and the field I want to go into. I'm curious, what were the other jobs that were high on your list aside from cyber transport systems?
hey this reply is 3 years late (sorry!) , but here goes anyway. at the time I wanted to be a loadmaster, linguist, and this job. I probably wouldn't have taken very many other jobs. I got DQ'd from loadmaster by "failing" the depth perception test, and scored a super low score on the DLAB. However I was pretty much equally happy taking 3D1X2
what's the biggest difference between your job and 3dx2? I was going to sign an x2 contract, but after seeing your video it sounds like this is actually what I want to do. I just got my comptia network + from self study but nobody will pay to relocate me and I live in nowhere, GA with no car so i'm thinking why not go to the military.
Yes If you could, could you possibly find out more info. about Cyber Surety and Cyber systems operations. Please and Thank You Brandon, I'm also joining the air force really soon and was looking into client systems, cyber surety and cyber systems operations.
now almost 8 years later, the question is did this airman re-enlist? did he become a ccna/ccnp/ccie and get out and become a contractor or civilian at misawa or somewhere else?
no but i have plenty of friends who have done exactly that. networking didn't have that kind of draw for me, i found it to be super boring after a few years. i'm glad i did it, but i wouldn't re-enter the tech field unless i was desperate for a job. i work in corrections now. i need the 'people factor', and networking doesn't offer that at all
@@saveround hey, brother, you served your country and not many can say that. it's all about job satisfaction and if you're happier now, then good for you. i like staying in background just doing my work without briefing or interacting full-birds and e9s all day long; i've had my fill of all that
How did you get stationed aboard? I was told we overseas and stateside and if my preference is to go overseas. I shouldn't fill out the stateside dream sheet. Is that true? Also if i dont fill out the stateside that means i have no preference and they could send me anywhere.. what should i do?
it's hard to remember, but I'm almost certain i only put overseas bases down on my dream sheet. if they weren't going to send me overseas then i didn't really care where I went. i know for a fact I put Yokota/Misawa/Okinawa as my top 3. so, sorry, i can't be of much help :(
does this job have a re-enlistment bonus? Also, how does this job transition to the civilian sector if you choose to not re-enlist? Thanks in advance for your response.
I am separating from the active duty Air Force in two months and i am joining the ANG for which i will retrain into the Cyber Transport AFSC. Could you tell me what in general will be taught at tech school? By that i mean, do they expect trainees to have any prior training/knowledge or will they start from the basics? Also, you mentioned that getting the CCNA certs is an optional thing (or at least it sounded like that), but do they give us the chance to test for the CompTIA A+ and/or Network+ certifications either while we are in tech school or upon completing our training there? Thanks!
Most likely yes. Being 3D1X2 you deal a lot with wires and switches and they're color coated so this would disqualify you.Check with your recruiter first
You say in here that Tech School is up to 9months. I just received this job and they are saying that training will be 136dys. Is there something I am missing?
Probably. (1) I went through 7 years ago. At that time I had 2 months of "in between school" BS like cleaning. (2) They may just be referring to one school. When I went through, I attended 3 schools (1 for basic AC/DC stuff, 1 for networking/phones, 1 for Security+ certification). (3) They may have changed things since I went through.
1B4X1 is a job that you can't get during your first enlistment, you must serve at least 1 enlistment, and then you have to cross-train into it. It is fairly competitive but it sounds extremely badass to me. I had a friend get a massive re-enlistment bonus when he got that job. Definitely prepare for it if you're interested, it's competitive from what I hear so you'll want all the credentials you can get if you want it (CCNA, Net+, Sec+, Bachelor's, etc.) I don't know much about it other than that, and things might have changed since I was in.
I was thinking about joining and going this route, but do you know anyone who is red/green color blind that got this job? I am not severely R/G color blind but i just wanted to know if you knew if that was a prerequisit that could hold me back, also how do like it so far, this video is a little old now. anything change?
I really want this job going into the air force but im afraid of them giving me something else or if i reject everything they give me, they will just cut me off and not contact me.
Some recruiters can get pissed off if you come at them with a one-job mentality. However, getting the job you want is far better than settling for something you don't. Just depends on how much you want to join the AF in general, I guess. Edit: To add to this, I went to my recruiter with this job as the job I really, really wanted, but indicated I was willing to settle for something else if I couldn't get it. Would I have joined if they had given me Client Systems instead? Not sure. Just saying - it's your life, don't let them "force" you into accepting a job that you'll regret, because you'll absolutely regret it during BMT.
When you signed up for the AF, did you go Open or did you request and wait for 3D1X2? If so, did it take long for you to get a call back saying there was an opening for that job for you?
You had mentioned that tech school took you 9 months. I am headed out April 26th for BMT and am scheduled after tech school to be back by late November. I think the school is 154 days to be exact plus BMT. Does this sound correct or should I plan for a delay?
+Steven Papadopoulos I would believe whatever you read on the Internet. I was there four years ago and I had something like 2 months inactivity (schools were full so I had to sweep hallways or whatever). It's probably been changed by now, multiple times
How did you get this specific job? Did your Asvab scores had anything to do with you getting this job? I'm a networking student thinking of joining the Airforce but I don't want to end up working in anything else other than computers
From the beginning, I told him I was thinking about joining the air force, but was mostly interested in 3D1X2. I had 80 overall with a high score in electronics, recruiter called me a week after MEPS and said he secured that job for me. Signed like the next day with the job in the contract. Get a high score in electronics and getting this job shouldn't be that difficult - but who knows, maybe I got lucky?
In 3D1X2 and most other 3Dxxx career fields, the AF tech school includes Security+, which is a DoD requirement to work in many career fields in Communications/Cyber. 3D1X2 is basically a 6 month Network+ school, but doesn't "give" you a Net+ cert. A few 3D fields include training that gets you pretty much ready to take A+ exam.
So I am assigned this AFSC, and I leave for basic in about a week... Anything you could tell me about tech school? I know we could get stationed at just about any Air Force base so is it guaranteed I'll get something off my dream sheet? Are deployments common?
Lyric J your dream sheet is just suggestions to the AF. You're not promised anything on that list. It mainly comes down to what the AF needs and what slots need to be filles.
Lyric J how is it going for you? I'm interested in this job, but I'm concerned about tech school, is it hard? Would you recommend it? Please tell me all you know thanks.
Why did you decide to get out? That seems like a pretty badass AFSC. Did you get picked up by an agency? Just wondering bc I'm looking to retrain into Cyber.
I really didn't like the military. It was a good job, but it got boring for me after a couple of years (not normal, most people like it, I think). I just hated the overall reduction in freedom, having a jerk boss, having my opinions shot down because of my rank, etc. The military is stupid.
I hear ya man. So if you don't mind me asking...what are you doing now with that background in your previous AFSC? TS I hear helps out a lot especially in contracting. What are the figures?
@@Vamp7814 I have done nothing with my TS and experience in 3D1X2. I have a close friend who is making stupid money (~$90,000 or more) with his 6 years 3D1X2 experience and TS clearance. Making amazing money after separating from this AFSC is absolutely possible, you just have to apply yourself and get the necessary certs/degree. As for me, I was bored by the job and didn't really have the motivation to continue in that line of work. But if you're interested in this job (and maybe motivated by money?) I would definitely suggest cross training. It's probably one of the "best" career fields in the AF (in my opinion), especially in terms of what is possible post-separation.
So I’m about to enlist... and this 3D1X2 is a 70% acceptance for me. My life plan and passion is to retrain into 1B4X1 Cyber Warfare Operations as a hacker!! I’m totally on board with what you said about continuing learning especially in this field!! What kind of certs do you get while training, and how well will this job help me transition into 1B4X1 so I can set myself up for success???????
This job feeds really nicely into 1B4X1, one of my closer friends re-enlisted into 1B4X1 at the end of his first enlistment. But I should point out that he was definitely one of the most skilled technicians we had in our shop and had an insatiable desire to learn more about his career field. The only cert we were required to get was Security+ and we got that during tech school (it was a requirement to graduate), but I graduated 7 years ago, so things may have changed. Getting Net+/CCNA/CCNP is totally up to you but absolutely doable. You sound motivated, good luck!
The other jobs involved with computers? I assume you're talking about the AFSCs that start with "3D". I know Client Systems works with the software side of computers mostly (but they also do outside phone work too...like physical installs...but that might just be my experience). Client Systems and Cyber Transport go hand in hand, we work with each other a lot. You can think of Cyber Transport handling the lower levels of the OSI model and Client Systems handling the upper layers.
I took the ASVAB about 9 years ago, so unfortunately I have no specific recommendations. I would recommend in general to go to amazon and buy an ASVAB prep book and take it super seriously. It's nice to have a high score, gives you lots of options!
Thanks I'm in dep right now. I didn't know if working with the hardware or software would benefit me more when I get out. I'll look into client systems since 1x2s seem to only work with hardware.
saveround so i found out today i wasnt going into transport systems im going into the 3d0 field. Do their lives suck? Do you have any info on what they do day to day besides help desk?
Unfortunately I don't really know a lot about them. I work with them rarely and I'm still not very clear on what they do (3D0X2). A lot of them seem stuck up like they do most of the work in our area, although I never really see them do anything. Sorry I can't answer your question better, I just don't know what they do, really.
I just booked this job too, I was interested in what I can gain in the civilian world with these skills..do you know if you can get cisco certified while in the af..some cisco certs require tools that aren't usually available to most people you know..and do you have time to utilize the AFCC for a IT degree??
You can get cisco certified while in the Air Force. How far you want to go is up to you. The Air Force will provide you with a basic understanding of networking, but how much more you want to learn is up to you. You will have to provide your own study materials and equipment, the only thing the AF will provide to you is a one-time payment of your certification test that you can use on pretty much any test you would like. You have plenty of time to go to school, if that's your question...I know plenty of people that are chasing an IT degree right now. I'm sorry, I should rephrase that...*I* have plenty of time for school. Your mileage may vary. So, long story short...Yes
saveround can you still choose your job in the airforce or do they choose it for you. i got 92 on my asbav and i have am associate's degree. what are my chances of getting your job if it's my number one priority?
Knowledge Ops works with paperwork a lot. I think they work with security clearances too. I don't really know much about them but it seems boring as hell. Forgot to mention Client Systems can also be pure helpdesk. Never met a programmer, so I don't know anything about them. Was there a specific job you were wondering about so maybe I can help you further?
nope but i have friends who i knew in the AF who are now killing it in the private sector doing pretty much the same thing they were doing in the military. i am no longer in the networking world, it was super boring to me, i didn't really enjoy it that much.
+AIFRANCHISE1 I don't do it anymore. I'm a full time student now. Networking is super boring to me. Interesting at first, but once you get into the details, it gets SUPER boring. Pays well, but not enough to sacrifice my sanity.
yes, although IT experience you can gain will fluctuate greatly depending on your assignment. with that said, I have learned plenty about how the Internet works (from top to bottom) how phones work, etc. I've learned a lot about the infrastructure and what goes on behind the scenes and you (probably) will too. if you're into IT, this is definitely one of the best career fields you can get into (in the AF).
Thats awesome to hear. I have my appointment on the 16th of this month with my recruiter and Im really hoping that I can enlist in the USAF. I saw this job on the military job sheet and then looked it up to see your video and that gave me some insight on what I would like to do. Thank you for your videos, they have really helped me
I like this job and I was just wondering if this job was difficult to get. Like, did you wait until this job opened or was it available right there and then. Also, was the electron test on the ASVAB hard?
i thought i replied to this but i guess not. i went to MEPS, then got this job a week later. no idea if that is typical. i left for basic 4 months later. keep in mind this was 8 years ago, so things might have changed. if i remember right i scored an 89 on electronics and 80 on asvab. asvab was not difficult, but i know they've changed the test. my scores weren't the greatest but once my recruiter got my scores in, it seemed like he was really pulling for me to get the job i wanted. he was a rockstar though, definitely not typical. i don't remember the electronics section at all, i took the test 9 years ago. but i have been building computers since i was like 15 and have always been interested in electronics so that part was pretty braindead easy for me. if you have a history of being interested in tech you won't have an issue on the test. at least i didn't, 9 years ago.
@@saveround I just took the ASVAB and I got an 84 on the electrical part and 80 for the QT. I see how jobs in the Air Force come and go and I don't know if I gonna get it but that's okay if I don't. Thank you from the reply. I've learned an insight from your experience. One more question. Was this job ever boring?
@@jacoblopez2995 Congrats! Yes, for me it was very boring at times, especially once I moved shops. At first I was doing what was described in the video and it wasn't too bad. It was the first job I had where I had to use my brain to solve problems and think critically so it was interesting from that perspective. I moved to a different shop which had a completely different focus and I was bored out of my mind. But my coworkers weren't bored by it. It's all what you make of it!
saveround do you know any good non-boring electrical jobs or any job that are worth the time? I’m just making sure my time in the Air Force is worth it. Thanks for the reply.
@@jacoblopez2995 I should re-explain. The job itself is NOT boring. It is actually pretty interesting and it gets incredibly complex at times. MOST people I worked with did not find the job boring. But I hit a point after I switched shops where I was bored by it and that was mostly because I KNEW I was getting out of the military and I had no interest in my job anymore. But plenty of people find it very interesting. I do not think you would find a more interesting job than this in the electronics world other than technical applications specialist (not sure if that job still exists) or 1B4X1 (but you can only cross train into this). I do not know much about other career fields, so I can't give you much more information than that, sorry. But I don't want you to have the impression that 3D1X2 is BORING, because it's not. It's just in my specific situation, I found it to be boring, but that was mostly because of outside factors. For the first 3 years I did NOT find it 'boring'. If you have this job your time in the AF will DEFINITELY be 'worth it'. This is one of the easiest and highest paying (in the civilian world) jobs in the air force. Plus you will learn a LOT about networking and phones. You would NOT be making a mistake by taking this career. I definitely do NOT regret the fact that I took this job.
Cyber Transport 3D1X2 for sure. The cyber ops guys only work on servers and don't do a whole lot. As a 1x2 you do a lot..I mean a lot. We work on switchs and routers which is great for the civilian world. You will get a lot of good practice in the military before heading out to civilian world with 1x2 job. if you got any questions pm me.
I can't PM you--I can't find the link to do it through lol. I'm already booked for 3d032 cyber ops. The way I see it, the military experience definitely helps, but the bulk of your qualifications have to come through your own time being spent on certifications..right? I heard that if you just do what the military wants, you won't be very competitive in the civilian market
+lulzimazn I'm actually debating between 3D1X2, 3D0X2, too but also might consider going 3D0X4 Programming or 1C6X1. Do you know if these other 2 translates well in the civilian world? Also, if I choose 3D1X2, I know it translates well into the civilian world like the guy said here though if you practice what you learn after and don't take everything for granted, people with 3D1X2 can work on advanced degrees such as Network Admin, Database Administrator, though I think it also works well with people that came from 3D0X2 right? If I can't get in programming which 3D0X4 is, either 3D1X2, 3D0X2, or 1C6X1, or even these other 2 intelligence jobs 1N1X1 or 1N4X1
+Shadowfury I can't really say anything about the cyber ops jobs. I don't work enough with them or talk enough with them to see if it translates well. I know they work on servers that is about it. It doesn't sound very broad in my opinion. As for the other jobs I can't really say either. I know the Intel jobs government agencies like to pick you guys up and give you jobs. But If anything I think either of those jobs you listed are pretty good. If you want more info I would Google all those jobs and read what others have said about it translating well outside.
I didn't have to take it but I hear it is reasonably difficult. My job doesn't require the EDPT but I think Programming does. I'm not sure what other jobs require it. I took the DLAB test at MEPS because I thought I wanted to be a linguist. THAT was the hardest test I've ever taken. (I failed)
I really hope I get this job, this sounds exactly like my cup of tea. It's #1 on my list, with Radio Frequency Transmissions being #2. Does the 3D1X2 come up frequently?
Cody Richards I would not describe it as "fun". However it can be very intellectually challenging and you can learn a LOT about how the internet and phones work. Depends on where you get assigned though, you could get assigned somewhere where the opportunity isn't really there, and the opposite can happen too.
+rentono77 well I separated a few months ago Lol...but I would say you get used to the day-to-day. 9-5 M-F basically. very easy to get comfortable with
Just came back to see this video I liked in 2016.
Hey! Did you get to join? How did it go? Did you also end up getting this afscme? Cheers!
Sup bro, its Brown. The Same Basic/Tech School/Japan. Had no idea u made a video on Cyber Trans. Literally googled for my CDC for some refresher stuff and thought i saw your face on the video on the SECOND link...lol, good shit man.
You're mentioned in this video xD
Old school Tech. Controller 307X0. Stationed at Torrejon TCF, Spain. Awesome AFSC and great times!
This is a great and informative video. I actually just enlisted today and chose Cyber Transport, but this video helped me figure out what I was getting myself into. Thanks so much!
My pleasure...Congratulations!! (late response haha)
I have heard that this afsc has a ton of civilian marketability. Do you know anyone personally who has left and started a career?
I worked with a guy who spent 6 years in the Air Force as Cyber Transport. He got his CCNA and CCNP and moved to New York where he is now making $110K/year. In a few months I will be getting out after 4 years with my CCNA, and the jobs I am looking at start at $72K, and those are the jobs that don't require the clearance.
There is no AFSC with better civilian marketability than this one, not counting Air Traffic Controllers and Medical fields. The only close second would be certain administrative fields such as Contracting.
jesus
that's really good money he is making. The only downside is the high taxes.
Well standard of living is more expensive than taxes for him.
I thought I replied to this but guess not. Yes I know multiple people who have left the service and started very nice civilian careers ($80k+ starting)
Thanks for sharing and thank you for your service. I joined the Air Force back in 2009 and it was one of the best decision I've ever made.
I leave Nov. 4th for basic, then off to Keesler for Cyber Transport Systems and I am super excited! Thanks for this video and info! It's got me even more excited!
my pleasure! good luck in basic!
any updates on your experience. i was offered cyber transport aswell.
*LONG VIDEOS ARE DOPE* keep it up 👍 we need the detail to make an informed decision!! Videos like this gives us new recruits way more information than a google search or a recruiter will tell us!!
Thank you, glad it was helpful!
thank you! cyber transport was at the top, my second choice was client systems, then i think i had some intelligence job, nuclear weapons (no idea what they do), and a couple other jobs that were kind of filler that I would not have taken under any circumstance. there were only like 5 jobs i would have taken if they were offered - cyber trans, client systems, loadmaster (got DQ'd), Linguist (failed the test), and intel. i don't think i would have taken anything else, so i got pretty lucky.
Thanks a lot. The only other Cyber Transport video is made by this guy that puts people to sleep when he talks. Very grateful for this video.
I just got this job!!!!!! I leave for basic January 27! This was a big help! Thanks!!
no problem...good luck!!
I'm currently living in Misawa too, my dad is in the military right now and I'm choosing my jobs for enlistment.
My son is about 2 years into this USAF afsc, he loves it!
hey thanks for the info I just got assigned this AFSC yesterday. I leave for BMT Jan 25th 2016.
+Brandon Elliott good luck!
+Brandon Elliott i've been assigned the same! and leave the same date!
If you get a Computer Science or Engineering degree they'll pretty beg for you to go to them.
perfect video man, thank you
Are you guys strictly a day job as in like 8-4 Mon-Fri? i have been Security Forces for the past 5 long years and 3 of the 5yrs have been night shift.
Basically it is about networking system. I made a 88 on my electronics. And I wasn't sure if I should do a 4 year or 6 year.
Do you have college credit? If so do you have enough for e-3 status?
:(
I would not recommend taking a job that you aren't totally psyched about.
Much Appreciated !!!
I just got this afcs and I leave June 6th thanks for the help!
cyber systems operations goes to the same tech school, I believe. they are in a different squadron (or were when I was there), but all the rules are essentially the same. not sure of the length but I'm sure it's shorter than 3d1x2
@mysticstrider I got 86 on the asvab and I have this job as well.
@mysticstrider oh jeez man, I didnt really study much, but I'm only 17 I leave in August, highschool must've helped they sell books that have all the stuff on the asvab
@mysticstrider my recruiter was a cyber transport systems too which was pretty cool
@mysticstrider but yeah I wish I could go sooner tbh
Sorry, I don't remember. However there are ASVAB study guides and books that can help get you on track if you want a tech job.
Cool, I'll look into those study guides. Thanks for the help man, I appreciate it!
Not just the Electronics Info, also Mathematical Knowledge, Arithmetic Knowledge and General Science.
Still in? I am looking to cross train into 1B4X1 - Cyber Warfare.
nice vid, very informative and to the point
if i have none of acknownleage about network field, is that possible to learn from the beginning with thia job?
What are the civilian equivalents for this job besides doing contracting? I am contemplating joining as a 3D1X2, or as a 3D0X2, and want to know what job opportunities i will have in the future after my enlistment. I would be fine with doing contracting though.
This is the job that I got. hopefully it's good.
How was it?
Do any of the 3D career fields have commissioning opportunities? If I finish my computer science degree what are options in computers?
Just got this job today and am super excited. Was wondering if everyone with this job gets top secret clearance? I think I should be fine but would like to know if I can expect top secret, secret, etc.
i think you get top secret, I don't really ever work with secret stuff so i'm not sure. but your family and your friends *will* get interviewed by the government to ensure you're trustworthy. however, that is no guarantee you will work with top secret level stuff.
saveround Alright, thanks!
Thanks for the info man. definitely appreciated
Hey great vid! You and I seem to be the same person interest wise (wanting to go with computers, Japan, and be happy being single in the dorms! haha). I enlisted for the 6 years and I ship out next week. I'm going in the same field so this really helped. Questions: can you break down what you learn in tech school as far as each month goes? like, 1 month you learn what a computer is, another month you learn what a mouse is... etc.? Thanks!
how long did it take to get the security clearance? what is the process? do you have a good civilian job relating to your military one?
The opportunities won't just fall into your lap, you have to prove you are a badass.
thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
Great info! Any particular reason why you decided not to reenlist?
Do you know if the other cyber afcs have 9 month long tech schools? cyber surety?
My son's job is in cyber security. How long will he stay at his tech school?
what's the biggest difference between your job and 3dx2? I was going to sign an x2 contract, but after seeing your video it sounds like this is actually what I want to do. I just got my comptia network + from self study but nobody will pay to relocate me and I live in nowhere, GA with no car so i'm thinking why not go to the military.
3d1x2? That is Cyber Transport Systems
my bad I ment to put 3d0x2 cyber security operations. that's the one I initially wanted to do.
Matthew Trammell I'm sorry I'm not sure what they do >.
ok thx anyway for posting the vids bro
Yes If you could, could you possibly find out more info. about Cyber Surety and Cyber systems operations.
Please and Thank You
Brandon, I'm also joining the air force really soon and was looking into client systems, cyber surety and cyber systems operations.
So did you re enlist? I booked the same job but I'm waiting for basic. Any tips for tech school?
I just took my ASVAB and qualify for all the electronics jobs. What electronic jobs would be best for in and outside the air force?
+Heidman123 This one. Oh and technical applications specialist (I think is what it is called, if they still have it)
now almost 8 years later, the question is did this airman re-enlist? did he become a ccna/ccnp/ccie and get out and become a contractor or civilian at misawa or somewhere else?
no but i have plenty of friends who have done exactly that. networking didn't have that kind of draw for me, i found it to be super boring after a few years. i'm glad i did it, but i wouldn't re-enter the tech field unless i was desperate for a job. i work in corrections now. i need the 'people factor', and networking doesn't offer that at all
@@saveround hey, brother, you served your country and not many can say that. it's all about job satisfaction and if you're happier now, then good for you. i like staying in background just doing my work without briefing or interacting full-birds and e9s all day long; i've had my fill of all that
How did you get stationed aboard? I was told we overseas and stateside and if my preference is to go overseas. I shouldn't fill out the stateside dream sheet. Is that true? Also if i dont fill out the stateside that means i have no preference and they could send me anywhere.. what should i do?
it's hard to remember, but I'm almost certain i only put overseas bases down on my dream sheet. if they weren't going to send me overseas then i didn't really care where I went. i know for a fact I put Yokota/Misawa/Okinawa as my top 3. so, sorry, i can't be of much help :(
Got this job. I leave august 22 for basic!
does this job have a re-enlistment bonus? Also, how does this job transition to the civilian sector if you choose to not re-enlist? Thanks in advance for your response.
+Marcus Harris no, it does not AFAIK. It transitions very well and pays very well on the outside. Just remember to get your degree/CCNA :)
Can you chose if you want intelligence or communication squadron (when you were talking about your friend that went with you to basic and tech)?
+Olivia Noel No :(
I am separating from the active duty Air Force in two months and i am joining the ANG for which i will retrain into the Cyber Transport AFSC. Thanks!
i am retraining to the ANG also.. how was is finding a job after tech school?
With this job, how likely are you to be deployed?
I read online that 3D1X2 requires color vision. I have moderate red/green color blindness. Would that disqualify me?
Do they assign your squadron based on anything or is it mostly just randomized?
Any idea what programming language(s) a Computer Systems Programmer would use?
Hmm...I have no idea, sorry. Programmers are SUPER rare. I have never even talked to one.
Got this job and ship March 21st. Kinda disappointed since I wanted a more security related job.
This job can feed into 1B4X1. I've had a few friends switch after their first enlistments. Check it out.
Edit: Congratulations and good luck :)
Feed into as in re enlist? Or can you change into another cyber job while in for my first 4 years? Thanks!
I am not severely R/G color blind but i just wanted to know if you knew if that was a prerequisit that could hold me back, also how do like it so far, this video is a little old now. anything change?
haha you're right it's old, I'm almost out now! haha!
i don't know if you can get in being colorblind. All I can say is you should ask a recruiter.
This doesn't answer your question, but please NEVER EVER go Open. Wait until there's an opening for the job you want.
do you have to have top secret clearance for this job?
Yes you do
Not to qualify for it. They will put you through the ts process. To clarify: you do not need a prior to getting this job.
Great video. I know this isn't your job but i enlisted in Client Systems. Will you be able to tell me a bit more on that? Thanks!
Bro how would you describe AFSC 3D0X3 Cyber surety? and the differences between that and Cyber Transport.
How did you get this specific job? Did your Asvab scores had anything to do with you getting this job? I'm a networking student thinking of joining the Airforce but I don't want to end up working in anything else other than computers
Marcos Canar you need at least 70 and some college credits.
What if you have A+ and Network+? I have no college education just experience and certs
Do the air force give you any resources to help you take the test if you decide to test for new certs?
In 3D1X2 and most other 3Dxxx career fields, the AF tech school includes Security+, which is a DoD requirement to work in many career fields in Communications/Cyber.
3D1X2 is basically a 6 month Network+ school, but doesn't "give" you a Net+ cert.
A few 3D fields include training that gets you pretty much ready to take A+ exam.
What is your asvab score?
80 overall
@Bill I work in corrections
@@saveround have you gotten any other certs besides the secuirty+?
The other jobs involved with computers? I assume you're talking about the AFSCs that start with "3D". I know Client Systems works with the software side of computers mostly (but they also do outside phone work too...like physical installs...but that might just be my experience). Client Systems and Cyber Transport go hand in hand, we work with each other a lot. You can think of Cyber Transport handling the lower levels of the OSI model and Client Systems handling the upper layers.
Hey man i’m looking into this field but i need to study quite a bit in order to achieve a score high enough for eligibility. any recommendations?
I took the ASVAB about 9 years ago, so unfortunately I have no specific recommendations. I would recommend in general to go to amazon and buy an ASVAB prep book and take it super seriously. It's nice to have a high score, gives you lots of options!
which side would be the software side? (what afsc?)
3D1X1 (I think) but the name of the career field is Client Systems
Thanks I'm in dep right now. I didn't know if working with the hardware or software would benefit me more when I get out. I'll look into client systems since 1x2s seem to only work with hardware.
saveround
so i found out today i wasnt going into transport systems im going into the 3d0 field.
So, long story short...Yes
saveround thanks man I appreciate the help, maybe we'll run into eachother in the blue :p
saveround
Were you able to get this AFSC guaranteed prior to meps or did you pick it up at basic?
Audio Phreak it was guaranteed right after first meps trip, before i left for basic
Awesome, thank you.
saveround can you still choose your job in the airforce or do they choose it for you. i got 92 on my asbav and i have am associate's degree. what are my chances of getting your job if it's my number one priority?
Pretty Good we are actually are in need of 1x2s.
Knowledge Ops works with paperwork a lot. I think they work with security clearances too. I don't really know much about them but it seems boring as hell.
Forgot to mention Client Systems can also be pure helpdesk.
Never met a programmer, so I don't know anything about them. Was there a specific job you were wondering about so maybe I can help you further?
is this more on hardware or more on software?
sorry meant to say transport systems instead of client systems
You left in 2015? Did this job in the air force get you a good, high paying job in civilian world?
nope but i have friends who i knew in the AF who are now killing it in the private sector doing pretty much the same thing they were doing in the military. i am no longer in the networking world, it was super boring to me, i didn't really enjoy it that much.
How hard was it to get this job? is there a high demand or easy slot?
super easy for me. I had a high ASVAB and a good recruiter. the job was guaranteed before I left for basic.
Now that you have separated from the military how as this job translated to civilian life?
+AIFRANCHISE1 I don't do it anymore. I'm a full time student now. Networking is super boring to me. Interesting at first, but once you get into the details, it gets SUPER boring. Pays well, but not enough to sacrifice my sanity.
+nemesis656 No idea, just doing general stuff at the moment. But no computers for me.
Your vids are very informative. Thanks so much
what are some of the certificates you earn while in tech school, and on the job?
+Mario Salazar I was required to get S+ while I was in tech school. I didn't get anything else
I have an interest in penetration testing. Is there a job within the air force that provides training for that?
Im leaving for basic August 19th..nervous 😦
Good luck!!
did you know a lot about networking going into training?
Im currently studying on my own time for the IT field, would Cyber Transport Systems be a good choice for me to try to get into?
yes, although IT experience you can gain will fluctuate greatly depending on your assignment. with that said, I have learned plenty about how the Internet works (from top to bottom) how phones work, etc.
Thank you for your videos, they have really helped me
Did you have to take the EDPT and was it difficult?
Its cool no worries man your doing a great job with the videos and as an airman!!!
How hard was tech school?
I am pretty torn between 3D1X2 and 3D0X2
Which do you think is most marketable to the civilian world?
A SD that is true. Sometimes you will have opportunities to go and earn certification,if it is a good training opportunity that benefits the military.
If you want more info I would Google all those jobs and read what others have said about it translating well outside.
how much do you know about 3D0X2, cyber systems ops?
I think they work on servers, that's all I know. Sorry I don't know more
I didn't have to take it but I hear it is reasonably difficult. My job doesn't require the EDPT but I think Programming does. I'm not sure what other jobs require it. I took the DLAB test at MEPS because I thought I wanted to be a linguist. THAT was the hardest test I've ever taken. (I failed)
Did you have to perform a polygraph for this position?
No but you will if you get assigned to an intelligence squadron
whats the name for the afsc's cyber warfare??
I really hope I get this job, this sounds exactly like my cup of tea. It's #1 on my list, with Radio Frequency Transmissions being #2. Does the 3D1X2 come up frequently?
I can't say for sure, but I think so because it's a job that is needed literally everywhere.
saveround Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. Glad to hear you're enjoying your time in the AF.
Is Cyber transport Overall a fun Job? I Leave for Basic May 26th for Cyber transport.
9-5 M-F basically. very easy to get comfortable with
+saveround did you get out after your 4 years or just because stuff happened?
+Tommy Coolio I got out after 4 years, my contract ended. I think this video is still pretty accurate though
Is it still possible to get this afsc with a 4 yr? I thought they forced you to do a 6 yr contract because of the tech school length
To be honest I don't know. Your best resource for this question is a recruiter.
Hi I signed a 4 year and I got this AFSC
