Guru Guru are a German band that was founded in 1970 and are still around. Drummer Mani Neumeier (who sings on this track) actually has a free-jazz background; he and Uli Trepte, the first bass player of the band, were members of the Irène Schweizer Trio (Irène Schweizer is a Swiss jazz pianist who was also a member of the Feminist Improvising Group that consisted only of female musicians; besides Irène Schweizer most notably Lindsay Cooper on bassoon, saxes and clarinet and Georgie Born on bass and cello, who were both members of the extremely experimental British band Henry Cow). The musicians in this track are Mani Neumeier on drums and vocals, Hans Hartmann on bass and Houschäng Nejadepour on guitar. The track is from their 5th album "Dance of the Flames", which was released in 1974.
Guru Guru are musical chameleons; almost every album is in a different style. Their most famous, even their signature track, is "Der Elektrolurch" (German for "Electric Amphibian"), a fictitious beast that, according to the German lyrics, lives in the insulation screw joint besides the main counter. This beast asks the other band members several questions, to which they give witty answers. The last question is "Was macht ihr eigentlich, wenn ihr einmal älter seid?" ("What will you, by the way, do when you are older?"); this question is answered musically by the band suddenly really rocking off. In live versions of this track Mani Neumeier wears a self-designed costume including a mask with electric lights and sometimes an artificial tail as well. The musicians always give other answers to his questions. Their 1978 live album is brilliant, and of course they play a version of "Der Elektrolurch" on it too.
Here a 2014 live version of "Der Elektrolurch"; Mani has no tail in this one.

Guru Guru concerts are extremely fun to watch. The drummer is a German legend and interestingly very famous in Japan; his wax works effigy can be found in a wax works museum in Tokyo. He played with members of the Japanese band Acid Mothers Temple for some time, who changed their name to Acid Mothers Guru Guru then, and released two albums with them. He also married Etsuko Ichikawa, a Japanese performance artist, with whom he does live performances. He also had several side projects besides Guru Guru and Acid Mothers Guru Guru, like Terra Amphibia or Tiere der Nacht (German for Animals of the Night). He also performed a concert for drums and excavator once which can be found on RUclips:

As already said: The band is still around and releases albums and gives concerts. Mani Neumeier will turn 82 on Dec 31st.
Hirschhorn is a town in Hesse, one of the 16 federal states of Germany; the name actually means "Buckhorn".

Guru Guru were a German rock band. They released their first album in 1970 and this is from 1974. An era of what was called Krautrock, with lots of german bands doing rock/experimental music. Good times. The band had many line-ups but this is my favourite, with guitarist Houschaeng Nejadepour. This is quite sedate for him. He was one of the very few guitarists at this time who could give John McLaughlin a good run for his money. They have released about 40 albums but with little commercial success.
Dan, the bass did change a little about half way through, lol. I used to have this on a mix cassette tape for long drives and I love the bass when you're driving fast on the open road.

@@SightAfterDark If you want to descend down the rabbit hole a bit further, you can hear Houschäng Nejadépour's guitar work in another fabulous Krautrock group called Eiliff who released 2 excellent albums in the early 1970s.

Cool German band. They have a ton of albums, I’ve only heard a few. This song was unfamiliar to me, but I already downloaded the album to listen to more.

Hirschorn is a country town in the south hessian county of bergstraße. It's part of the hessian Odenwald ( a low mountain range) and is building together with neighboring Neckarsteinach the most south of hessia. It's part of the integral nature reserve Bergstraße - Odenwald. I think there are living some girls, just if you want to know!

Great album, bought it when it came out, think I was about 17. A lot of good European bands around at the time. Thanks for playing it, I'll have to dig it out and give it an airing 👍

@Paul Fenwick gives a pretty good synopsis below. I would also add that Guru Guru was just a trio at this time. They disbanded in the late 1970s, but kept coming back with sporadic studio releases and more frequent compilations, live albums, and concert performances.
Their music is variously termed Krautrock, prog rock, psych rock, or experimental rock, but "Tomorrow", the opening cut from their 1976 release "Tango Fango", is inscrutably pure Southern Rock, and not a bad attempt at it.

Guru Guru were one of our biggest heroes here in germany in the seventies, along with Kraan, Amon Düül, Popol Vuh and Grobschnitt for sure - not this kraut kind of stuff like 20 minutes improv on one single tone or chord like tangerine dream, klaus schulze (but he was a big inovator btw), kraftwerk etc did. Just to mention Neu!, Can, Cluster and A.R. machines, this is partly kraut like you will expect - but partly it is great inventive music at it's best. From Guru Guru I would recommend "Känguru", what a great album!

It's Guru Guru, featuring Tape-Loop Tape-Loop on bass! And I do mean featuring; it's not often you hear the base cranked so high up in the mix. The guitar soling was enjoyable though.

Right away this reminded me of that Pink Floyd song from The Wall that went, "Look Mommy, there's an airplane up in the sky." It was a bit long but that guitar was fantastic. Nice job Paul!

90s? Thought it sounded more retro than i was expecting, but '74, as revealed elsewhere on this page came as a surprise. Gonna relisten, check some links others have provided, wiedersehn.
That was fast. Love the beginning, "thematic" set-up, atmospherics, pulse, drive, also wish the bass had been as venturesome as the guitar and drums. Not where my mind goes when I hear 'Krautrock', not their fault. Well worth exploring, imo, including other projects mentioned elsewhere here. 'Nightrider theme' WAS cool AF, lol, the Hoff, not so much. Burgers anyone? lmdao.
Saved the link to 'Die Elektrolurch', 2016, from Jeannine and Friederike and a full show from '76 off to the right, as well as 'Concert for Drums and Excavator', 1988, also from J and F. Yoicks and away!

Cool song, but totally agree about the bass line. They should've changed it up a little by "borrowing" the bass line that comes in at about 2 minutes of Closer to Home/I'm Your Captain since it's already a bit similar.

They are a German band that came across in the Seventies, but I have no active recollection what they really sounded like back then. That's long ago, after all, and I was never a fan of krautrock, as it was called. But I also like the guitar in this piece, I must admit ;-)

    1970 UFO
    1971 Hinten
    1972 Känguru
    1973 Guru Guru
Their third LP Känguru and their forth is my favorite ones........after those four records they changes style and became another band for me.
On the forth one they did a fantastic rock medly: Rocken Mit Eduard, where they all show their skills.

Nice guitar but eventually you gotta get away from your 5 or six safe riffs…. At the very least go with a shorter solo. Say anything less than 10 minutes? Dug the drummer a lot though. Definitely a major part of the tune. My vote is for the 70’s.

@@buckwahn8241 but you can't replace seeing the band live. I'll take the lower sound quality. The live double album is awesome too. Too bad there is no footage of that.
