Love this idea! Been trying to come up with ideas to keep my box at work organised, cause I'm messy by nature... One of the reasons I love this channel! Ideas for keeping stuff arranged, and ideas for how to fix stuff I'd have never thought of in the past! One thing I would say, is turn the insert round put the small things to the front, like your saw blades and bits and bobs in 'air tools 1'. Makes it easier to get into with the slight overhang at the back edge of the drawers have from the drawer above... and means you're not leaning over the drawer looking for tiny bits, also means you don't have to open the whole drawer to grab a blade or bit...
Just finished semi-organizing my shop. I spent the hours that i could over the last 3 weeks doing so. The sense of calm i experienced upon finishing it was amazing. I tried explaining to my wife, but she just didnt understand why it made me so happy to have a specific place for all the tools. The 56” double stacked tool boxes with locker and my 3 shelves section with pegboard doors and 3 4 draw file cabinet my garage is ready for work. Awesome tip about the hot glue and awesome build!
"Benefits of Righteous Living" it's a great saying. I make the same type of organizers out of foam board too. I was always embarrassed of it, because some people (wife) say it's my OCD out of control, but I really love doing it. I like having everything organized, it just makes working so much easier.
I just laid my tools on top of a piece of plywood of the same size as the drawer's bottom, cut the tool's shape out, made spacers with some wood and glue, so that it would float the missing 6th plane, and then covered the tools i wanted in paper tape and set them inside the holes i've made such that each just floated perfectly using thin wire and more tape. Then i greased my drawer with a lot of petroleum jelly and poured foam inside. Once i was satisfied, i covered the top with a tape covered board and set weights on top. A two hours job, without foam setting times (left it 24h) and then half an hour to clean the mess and tape. Finished the tool shaped cavities with a spay g*n loaded with liquid filler, which then got spray painted with a clear gray. Each tool had a small wad of tape on its side, and the cover with holes, small finger sized holes over those places where i put the tape wads.
That sounds really cool for long-term tool storage. I like Adam's way for quick and dirty organizing but I'm definitely interested to try your method, sounds like it would look very legit

Hay Adam I am doing stuff like this all the time at the theatre and have plenty of time to do it now lol I have just sorted all the drills out at work and pelmet clips are a lifesaver lol loving your work thanks

I did not know about the levers on the drawer slides built into it! that would have saved me a bit of a headache installing mine! I ended up bending it out of shape, and hammering it back to install it! It worked out in the end :)

45:42 - this is the key - you can't put everything in it's place, if you don't have a place for everything. You just built places for a bunch of things, and now they can be in their happy little homes. Good stuff! Yay, hot glue and foam core!
This video couldn't have come at a better time! I'm getting a new toolbox delivered on Monday and was curious how I'd handle some of my tool organization in the drawers
I never thought I would “need” a tool box... I now have a large roller with a wood top and top box for all my art supplies and then a another medium roller and top box for all my tools.... not including the hand built wood boxes for more stuff lol. After seeing all of Adams stuff I feel a little more at ease that I’m not the only one... now. Have some ideas on how to organize better, thanks!
I'm early!! Also Adam, your love of weathering and vintage styled aesthetics speak to me on such a personal level. I've been wanting to Mod my laptop to look like a 50s retro futuristic style. I'd love your input on how to make it look.
I can relate to this sort of build from a different perspective. One of my jobs is to make custom foam inserts for cases and boxes. Usually, the most time consuming part is calculating the layout. Rather than making dividing walls, we use polyurethane foam in layers with cut-outs of tool shapes in each layer. It's vital to be able to visualise everything in 3D, because each layer may have different shaped cuts to fit one or more items, such as a large digital camera and telescopic lens. Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of a 3D scanner, Autocad or a CNC machine, so we have to do it all by hand. The end results are rewarding, though.
Remember when we said overwhelmingly we wanted more one day builds.... Yea this is what we meant. Great vids every week. Nothing too crazy because we just wanna see you make stuff and hear the stories
PERFECT, I have a mild case of organization, and I just started acquiring some air tools! Hoping this video (2 min in) details the more interesting/useful air tools, hoses/adapters/accessories? If not, think you could take a look at them sometime? Obviously the pin nailer, but there have gotta be some other oddball uses for moving the atmosphere more quickly! Thanks!
I definitely need to do this. I'm no slouch with foam core and hot glue, so I should be able to do my own drawer inserts. I wouldn't have thought of trying this method though, so thanks for going through it and explaining your thought processes.
Foamboard is such a great, inexpensive material for these kinds of projects. One thing I learned from the RC hobby that I have used in general making is if you later decide you want to make it a permanent object use cheap, thin fiberglass. Even the sloppiest globs of epoxy with a single layer of the thin stuff draped over it will turn that organic quick build into a lifelong object.
That whole repetitive thing is so true I do leather work and was hand sewing with a awl. I let my mind wonder just for a sec and it snapped back about the same time I shoved the awl into my figure.
I've done a lot of this divider-wall organization in my garage and house, but I use 1/8th hardboard instead (pegboard, but w/o the holes.....). I notch the ends to connect them. No gluing or nailing necessary.
Could we please hear the story of the Head from The Thing? I love that movie and I would absolutely love to hear about how you got it. Maybe a show and tell? I apologize for making requests but I would enjoy hearing about it.
You build like I do which makes me feel better. I don’t take measurements and make plans just line it up and build as I go. I thought this was amateur but after seeing this video I see it’s just a different way to accomplish the same goal but faster and sometimes better
It took Adam a long long time to be able to do this so quickly. Me doing this would take five times as long and end up with half my tools hot glued to each other
on the topic of Music in the shop, I just got a pair of bluetooth Worktunes (made by 3m) and they are pretty awesome. the sound quality is that of a decent pair of headphones, and the hearing protection is always important.
I've spent my lifetime getting edges ever sharper. I am not getting any sharper myself though. So at some point the sharpness of my tools will exceed my mental acumen. If it hasn't already.
@@DeadFastProductions it is easier to overestimate oneself. One thing I have learned in life is everything is a lot harder than I initially estimate it will be. The project I just got done with took me four times longer than I thought it would. Usually I am only off by a factor of two.
The moment that I realized what this was was also the moment I knew I needed to do this myself... because I totally needed more projects to make my life better.

This video couldn't have come at a better time! I'm getting a new toolbox delivered on Monday and was curious how I'd handle some of my tool organization in the drawers
Love your energy Adam! I hope I grow up to be like you one day.
Bless you, Adam! 🙏
One day builds make my sole happy.
Really like the clearly from a black and white detective noir film music that kicks in during the 2nd shelf build.
I've never thought about cutting foamcore with a table saw I'm a metal ruler and a sharp hobby/craft knife kind of person
Tune in next week when Adam sorts M&Ms.
Can’t believe I only recently found this channel but love it. Now I’m a Happy little subscriber😂😂😂
“Theatre lives and dies on hot glue.”
Truer words have never been spoken.
Perfect use of maker background music in the latter half of the video.
would love to see how Adam stores and sorts his files!
He did a previous video on making file storage.
Very cool build 👍 Adam always makes me want to be productive. Thanks for another video
This one Sparks joy 😇
That whole repetitive thing is so true I do leather work and was hand sewing with a awl. I let my mind wonder just for a sec and it snapped back about the same time I shoved the awl into my figure.
I like how a lot of the things you use your shop for is to improve your shop
It’s mainly what mine is for too. It’s odd, a bit of a hobby in itself that sometimes outshines the other projects around my home and for friends.
I've done a lot of this divider-wall organization in my garage and house, but I use 1/8th hardboard instead (pegboard, but w/o the holes.....). I notch the ends to connect them. No gluing or nailing necessary.
I love the drawer full of "holes" :D
Used a lot of air tools when working at CAT. The river air gun was always the best to use. We also had a few that required for lifts to use
A place for everything and everything in its place
Could we please hear the story of the Head from The Thing? I love that movie and I would absolutely love to hear about how you got it. Maybe a show and tell? I apologize for making requests but I would enjoy hearing about it.
I actaully did say 'bless you' so I laughed pretty hard when you thanked me for it.
You build like I do which makes me feel better. I don’t take measurements and make plans just line it up and build as I go. I thought this was amateur but after seeing this video I see it’s just a different way to accomplish the same goal but faster and sometimes better
It took Adam a long long time to be able to do this so quickly. Me doing this would take five times as long and end up with half my tools hot glued to each other
on the topic of Music in the shop, I just got a pair of bluetooth Worktunes (made by 3m) and they are pretty awesome. the sound quality is that of a decent pair of headphones, and the hearing protection is always important.
always like the respect for the danger of tools, "you must always be sharper then your tool."
I've spent my lifetime getting edges ever sharper. I am not getting any sharper myself though. So at some point the sharpness of my tools will exceed my mental acumen. If it hasn't already.
@@1pcfred don't underestimate yourself. Stay sharp-ening!
@@DeadFastProductions it is easier to overestimate oneself. One thing I have learned in life is everything is a lot harder than I initially estimate it will be. The project I just got done with took me four times longer than I thought it would. Usually I am only off by a factor of two.
I get the feeling that Adam would have fun with the flitetest guys with all the foam core builds that they do there.
Adam Savage the Bob Ross of the shop
I've been following in your footsteps in my room and... yeah people think im crazy now but its worth
The moment that I realized what this was was also the moment I knew I needed to do this myself... because I totally needed more projects to make my life better.
