Why the debate of expensive or free…how about it costs a bit less ie a weekly commute ticket for 25 dollars in Melbourne? That would help a lot of commuters out financially
Below a certain price point, it’s better to be completely tax payer funded. Eg with cheaper tickets, the system still needs to pay for: * ticket inspectors * entry and exit screens * ticketing software and hardware * administration of fines and appeals * etc…
Government collects over $500 billion in tax every year. Tax was once worth it for free medical, education, transport etc These days to see a Dr, you have to pay. Transport is a rip and education is a rip too. Where does our tax money actually go?

Having public transport free would reduce the amount of vehicles on the road, which would reduce congestion and it would reduce emissions. It would also make buses more efficient due to less congestion. I used public transport between 2000 & 2008 to travel to work and back. I preferred public transport to driving as a weekly ticket was $30 then.
Yep and also means less wear and tear on the road, thus less frequent maintenance. Then shift that funds to get more buses. If the city has higher population density with good corridor for public transport, then maybe they can consider building tram for higher capacity if its feasible to do so.
If you think 'tax payers will have to fork out', you are not really wrong, but that's only half of the story. Everyone is paying it anyway even if they are moving air. Utilise existing capacity doesn't cost anything extra. And it will be very likely to save tens of billions when 'urgent road upgrades' not really needed anymore.

Public transport prices are growing faster than inflation and are badly managed. Woke initiatives to go full electric and mass demand by migrants are forcing travel expenses to continue. If we make our government make this free, our government then has to take focus of these other issues.

No, you buy more rolling stock and upgrade existing rail infrastructure to run more frequent rail services, like what NSW is doing converting the Bankstown line to a metro.
We pay so much tax. Income tax, GST, land taxes, capital gains tax, fuel excise, stamp duty etc. When you really think about it, the tax brackets are actually an illusion. You don't keep whatever is left after paying income tax, you pay even more in hidden taxes like what I listed above. We deserve more free stuff.
This won't cause more taxes for most. This should just stop subsidising the rich electric car industry by making a less class based alternative actually effective.
Free transport for all immediately will cause massive issues. Lack of capacity is the obvious one but it also increases the mobility of society's worst.
Income tax is the easiest tax to collect on PAYG workers, so governments love it. And because tax cuts always widen the gap between high and low income earners it is manifestly unfair. Prices don't discriminate. GST was supposed to replace a raft of state taxes like stamp duty etc. But states refused to do so because not all the collected GST money is returned to where it is paid.

At a minimum a bus ticket should be cheaper than 10km worth of fuel. i.e. $2 should be the most expensive a ticket should be. It's bonkers that the marginal cost of driving is often cheaper than PT.
the govt could invest in expanding the public transport fleets, minimising maintanence costs and employing tech which allows public transport to be as efficient as possible energy-wise which would probably allow for cheaper fares while still making profit.
Unless figures have changed , only 10 % of people catch public transport. The real problem is the transport system was designed 100 or more years ago and does not go where people need it to go
This can also be funded through a reduction in road maintenance costs as if less people are driving then roads won’t need to be resurfaced as frequently so it could possibly save the government a lot of money in the long run! :)
