  • When it comes to getting an electric vehicle, one of the biggest roadblocks is having somewhere to charge it.
The City of San Diego is now tackling that issue of accessibility by signing a deal that will create a network of hundreds of charging stations throughout all communities.
Over the next two years, recreation center and library parking lots like the one in Valencia Park will be transformed, offering electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city of San Diego. It's a move that some San Diegans looking to go electric say they are looking forward to.

Unless you have free charging, it’s better to charge at home. .12 cents during off peak hours vs .56 cents at the station.

Sadly CA residential electricity rates are insane, cheapest off-peak EV PG&E rate is 34c+, some superchargers off-peak rates are cheaper than that! It used to be a lot better, but it has closed gap... still a lot more convenient at home of course, and still 30-60% cheaper than non-hybrid gas cars.
Luckily/smartly, I got rooftop solar, so all my home EV charging is FREE (solar already paid off in 5yrs)... now covers $1800/yr home power, PLUS $1500/yr worth of gas equivalent charging (8-9k mi/yr, only costs me

@@transparentdetailing1954 wow... here PG&E cheapest EV2a plan is 35c offpeak (midnight-3pm), 52-55c mid-peak (3-4p, 9p-midnight), and 54-66c peak (4-9p). Absolutely insane rates... and they are asking for more rate increases, too.
Notably higher than even Hawaii, which has to ship in fuel oil for power plants!
Few years ago it was 17c off-peak.
SOOO glad I got solar and I am still covered/net-zero (pay min fee per month for grid/transmission.)
Most other states, power & EV charging is MUCH cheaper/better, even if their gasoline is also cheaper instead of $5+/gal here...

That lady needs to seek big and better dreams if owning a Tesla is her goal in life 😮

Charging at work or at library/shopping parking lots during the day, when we have a glut of solar, actually HELPS the grid as sometimes they have to curtail solar production w/o extra demand. Hopefully as more EVs come w/ two-way charging (eg, they can give power BACK from battery), EVs can actually HELP the grid during few peak hour load times and act as dispersed batteries, like home Tesla Powerwalls already do.

Wow, can not wait for rolling Blackouts. Maybe we could move to only using Electricity at 4 am. And just get candles to light the house. Sit in our cars with A/C on to save cooling our house. Cook outside on a camp stove. Wash clothes on a rock by the river.

Most EV owners charge at home overnight, when there is little demand on the grid, or at work during the day, when there is lots of solar glut and cheap power. Peak grid demand is 4-7pm when much less solar, still high A/C demand and cooking at home... no EV owner plugs in and charges at those times. They charge later at night, when rates are cheaper, and grid demand is low. Easy to schedule .
PS I HAVE sat in my EV w/ AC on in garage, since my house doesn't have AC yet... similar has actually saved lives in TX when freezing weather broke the grid, able to stay warm and even charge devices safely in garage in their EV... same applies for heat wave in TX, can at least cool off in car w/ car AC even if house/town power is out, for a few days.
Some cars can even power the entire house for DAYS if plugged in! Worth 10 powerwalls!

More EV charging stations will make our electric bills go up. Because the electric companies will need to upgrade their aging power grids to handle the extra electricity demands from the EV charging stations.

as noted, home charging is the most convenient and cheapest way to charge... 5 seconds to plug/unplug, charges overnight or wkend day etc when you aren't using it, no time lost and cheaper (less so now given PGE/SDGE horrendous off-peak rates)...
and if you charge while parked at work or shopping/library/dining out, then... those 30minutes aren't wasted at all. Same during roadtrips, mostly you charge during needed breaks every 2hrs or so.

@@nesseb1 nope. People will keep refining fuel. Electric cars are just a fad until an actual decent “battery” is created. On top of that, the creation of electricity is massively dirty unless we go nuclear. Both things are a long way off… and, on top of that, electric car companies are falling apart because at this point, everyone that was going to buy one already did. So sales are plummeting. Just Google it.
