Put a two pence coin between the chisel and the auger. That's a starting point for the gap distance. You can tweek it from there if need be. Glad you got the attachment fixed to the old Meddings drill. Really solid build drilling machines. Cheers Tony
Mike, I bought one of these 40 years ago when first setting up the woodshop and used it once before I invested in a dedicated morticing machine. As you say the drill taper kept coming loose and the workpiece kept getting stuck on the chisel bit. Nowadays I use a router and either square the corners of the mortice or round the edges of the tenon much easier.

Getting the cutting edges and the drill really sharp is the magic!
Gday Cliff, 3d printer solved the problem mate, they are bloody handy to have, top job, cheers
Done a good job there Cliff, a good attachment to a pillar drill, take care
Lower the auger bit two or three mm past the chisel that way you'll find it'll cut the mortise hole easier
use candle wax on the bit
I tried one of these, but gave up - it kept pulling the chuck out of its taper on the return stroke.
I'd be thrilled if it pulled the chuck out, I've never been able to move the bugger!😁😁
Thanks for watching!
