I am such a big fan of Stardew Valley and I truly think that what Eric did really changed the farming simulator genre for the better with his creative work, but with this came also the negative side of people perceiving SDV as a God-like status game and all that comes after is just a copy. This is such a negative and wrong mindset to have, especially when SDV itself takes so much after Harvest Moon. And sure, there are quite a few farming sim games that came after SDV whose whole essence is just "Stardew but with X, Y and Z"; though when you put all games of the same genre in the same lense without any sort of unbiased critical judgement, you're actually doing a big disservice to not only Eric and his legacy, but to the gaming community in general. With that being said, I have 500+ hours of gameplay in Stardew between my Switch and Computer, and also started playing Fields of Mistria when the early access came out. My opinion is that it is an incredibly fleshed out game with complex and interesting game dynamics, as well as characters and graphics. It's clear as day that it is a Harvest Moon/Sailor Moon inspired farming sim game, and I am here for it. My favorite things so far about FOM: 1- The fact that we have a purpose in town, and that it is felt throughout the interactions you have with characters. 2 - The dialogue from each character is insanely diverse. I haven't heard one character repeating one single line of dialogue to me. 3 - The magic concept and how it is tied to the lore of the game, though I hope it is developed further by the time the full release comes out 4 - The various things/skills you can do. Cooking, woodworking, blacksmithing... Everything you do matters is FOM, and the more skilled you are, the easier your life will be 5 - The customization in both clothing and furniture. The cosmetics aspect of the game is super interesting, and I love how you craft your own furniture and that there are cute packs! 6 - Combat is super strategic, and will allow you to observe your enemy's attack pattern, making defeating them a lot easier than just spamming buttons. Things I wish were different/hope that will be different: 1 - The in-game time goes sooooooo fast. My wife and I have been having a similar conversation. To us, we put both of them as the top tier of their respective tiers. They're similar but so different and both equally always give me a good time, just in different ways.
Love this! And agree on fields of mistrias approach to having actual quests and aims that are organised. Personally i got lost with stardew on what to do and that there isn’t a plot line because that’s just my style of playing. Also i love how cute and pastel FOM is!

This is less to compare but one of my favorite aspects and that is FoM sets up the characters who are there to make sense as to why. The town used to have more people, but they all moved out post earthquake due to the towns ranking falling-- it makes sense Jo/Hemlock and their family wouldn't want to just move from the inn and similar to Nora/Holt with there might be a difference with the idea of just moving their kids. Majority of the non-marriage characters are older, those less likely to move from their hometown after a tragic event. March beyond just being jealous only knows Mistria-- having seen so many people recently abandon it in it the town's time of need it makes sense why he might be a little jaded. Even Juni and Ryis' reasoning for being in the town feel really solid at to why they are there without having to be told explicitly yet don't come off just there to fill the town with bodies. Speaking of the magic, one reason I do like how it's set up for now is that it follows along with other points of the plot. Magic is locked away behind the seals in the mines, effectively despite us as player knowing about magic going in the game doesn't treat it like this. Instead magic is myth, a folklore and while we see some people practice to remind us it is real it does follow like actual spell casting with Juni's potions. Most people don't believe in it or know it exists. We also know the lack of magic directly ties in with Caldarus and the ties of Eiland's interest in archeology-- rather than feeling like something just randomly added in magic is a tool the pc is developing overtime on the journey to help Mistria as gives a reason as to why players should want to progress.
Great video Ellie - and also brave, given how passionate Stardew fans can be (and don't get me wrong, I am also a massive Stardew fan!!). I love both Stardew and FoM, but for me Fields of Mistria just gives me the gorgeous and pretty graphics I always crave in pixel games. I am really loving the game so far, and thoroughly looking forward to what the continued development throughout early access brings.
Yesss! I was so nervous putting this together and tried to cover both sides as well as I could. I also love Stardew - I’ve got nearly 600 hours in it - but I just think it’s so unfair to call this a copy or a clone or a ripoff when it’s definitely got its only unique aspects as well! I’m also a huge fan of pixel art games! I love them so much. I can’t wait to see why comes next in Fields of Mistria! I wish it was all available already 😂
As a huge fan of both these games this is a great and fair video, and I honestly can't wait to see what else Fields of Mistria has to offer as it updates. The only thing I think I'd argue is that I don't feel FoM's combat is necessarily clunky (that's actually what I've called Stardew's combat in the past lol). FoM's combat is more dynamic. With Stardew I always felt like I was just standing there clicking a button, but here I actually feel like I'm fighting something. It feels more like an oldschool RPG which I find way more enjoyable. I think this may just boil down to preference and taste, though haha.
Thank you so much!! I tried to give a good overview of the similarities and differences as someone who loves both games! Yes I actually prefer FoM combat too because I like how pragmatic it is and that you can plan how to battle and that there are optimal times to wait and then strike. I meant more that it’s clunky in the way you can randomly go through enemies while doing your combo or that sometimes your character will attack in the opposite direction of the one you want. But I think that’s just Early Access teething issues!
I have SDV on my Vita and Steamdeck and I've played them for a couple of hours. FoM I've played over 60 hours! Even though it's early access I prefer FoM to SDV. The npcs are funny, charming and well written. Some of the responses your avatar's given are pretty funny too (see Valen's fourth heart event). Customization is awesome too! I can change my avatar anywhere at anytime! Ugh, FoM is soooo good! ♥️ I can't for the next update!
Had to comment on the festivals before I forgot. While the Stardew festivals and more fleshed out (and more of them), I do hate that an early in the day festival completely wastes the whole day. I rarely even bother with them after year 1. Also I like how Mistria starts you with a chest and calendar. I'm not sure yet if I prefer Mistria to Stardew, but there are so many things that I do like much much better in Mistria. Edit: Great video!
Oooh this is such a good point that I didn’t think about (mainly because I also skip the Stardew events because I’ve done them so many times now 😂) It is really nice that Mistria starts you with a chest although it’s much easier to build a second chest in Stardew than it is in Mistria which I think cancels it out 🤔 I’m glad you enjoyed the video! There are so many more things to talk about, but I think it gives a good overview ☺️
Wonderful and well explained video! I'm going to say one thing that I disagree with what you said, that Stardew Valley have no magic. Stardew Valley have a mouse selling hats, a wizard, a witch, a dwarf, a shadow (Krobus), and the Obelisks & Magic Sceptre that teleports you around. There are more magic in Stardew than just turning the children into doves :D that being said, I do get what you're saying though, we are mortal in Stardew, and most characters are mortals and it have some realism such as the characters having relatable stories as we go through the heart events with them, such as - George dealing with the accident that put him in wheelchair, Alex dealing with his grief and learning how to read a book, Shane with his depression, anxiety and alcoholism, so I feel like Stardew touch base with some relatable things that can happen to anyone IRL. I feel like Field of Mistria is like a love letter to all of the cosy farming gamers, because it took the best of Harvest Moon, Sailor Moon, Animal Crossing, Stardew, Wylde Flowers, and bit of Palia, and its graphic pixel art is very pop 90s art, which is not like in any other games. It took the best of each game such as - different colour animals from Wylde Flowers, diving and fishing from Animal Crossing, farming aspect from Stardew and Harvest, and I feel like the developers really have a deep insight into all the pros and cons from all of the beloved farming games, and implement in what was a con, into a positive in Field of Mistria, such as - we are bit faster, unlimited water in watering can (which was a con in Stardew), we can jump (rare from farming games), and the NPCs have such depth in each of them. Field of Mistria is such a welcoming new addition to cosy farming games, and I don't understand people who complains that it's a "Stardew rip off" Stardew is a wonderful game so why not indulge with Field of Mistria because we know at one point, Concerned Ape will no longer update Stardew, so Fields if Mistria is a new adventure farm game to experience, so it saddens me that some people thinks like this, instead of opening up their mind and just enjoy the cosy farming games that we have available, and go for a ride! I can't wait for FoM to add more festivals, it is desperately needed. Oh, and they need to make Olric romanceable LOL! Thank you so much for yet another fantastic video Ellie!
Wow thank you so much for the detailed response!! This was so fun to read through 🥰 Yes! I was more talking about magic that you can do as a character in Stardew Valley - I didn’t think about the teleport sceptre though! That’s a good shout. I agree with you in terms of the characters too! While I really love the dynamic dialogue in Fields of Mistria, Stardew Valley does have more hard-hitting topics for the heart events that, as you said, could be more relatable. Fields of Mistria really has combined some of the best parts of other farming sims and I’ve got high hopes for it! They definitely need to make Olric romanceable! Come on devs if you read this 🙏 Thank you so much for this incredible comment! It was great to read through.
@@Cozygamingclub I'm sorry that it's so long but so glad that you enjoyed reading it 😂 I'm a bit passionate when it come to comparing with Stardew, because it is a fantastic game and FoM is also a fantastic game, Animal Crossing is a fantastic game. Every games have pros and cons, unfortunately but there is something out there for everybody and that's the beauty of gaming. People who says that this game is a rip off, are definitely missing out. I haven't played FoM yet because I'm still playing Stardew, trying for perfection and platinum the game then I can relax and enjoy FoM without switching games up, I have a hard time with switching games LOL. For now I'm absolutely enjoying seeing videos & cute screenshots people share of FoM, it's so beautiful & so colourful and people are so creative with their homes and farms! Roll on to first FoM update on Q4 2024! 🤞🏼
@girlytomboyx there’s no need to apologise at all!! I absolutely loved reading through it all! The Stardew platinum is so hard!!! I’m so close to getting it but I just can’t beat the prairie king 😭 they’re the last trophies I need 💔 I hope you can get it and perfection!! I believe in you!
Thank you! It’s such a tough choice honestly! It’s a fun game but it’s also unfinished at the moment so you can’t finish it/experience everything. I still think it’s worth it but I can also understand waiting until it’s done
I'm really enjoying Fields of Mistria's more simple gameplay. Stardew Valley is quite overwhelming and I dislike the strict seasonal progression with the community centre because I get stuck if I miss one thing. Mistria is way more lenient in progression at least so far. It feels more comfy while Stardew feels like a lot of work automating everything. I like the more relaxed playstyle of Mistria
I will be honest as someone who loves farming games and cozy games Stardew Valley was not cozy at all and still isn't for me. I do like the farming aspects but the game punishes you so much to the point you can even miss main plotlines from stories. Which was always a weird thing to me. It's why I love games like Sun Haven and Fields of Mistria where you can take your time doing what you want without a lot of limitations and restrictions. I do wish Mistria had a time slider so we can slow down time becayse hoo boy working with that speed is crazy. I will admit the time is a bit punishing cause I want to do so much but I guess that is one of the points of the game is to slow down and take your time, which is ironic with the fast time speed ehe.
lets not forget that fields of mistria is in early access so it is not even finished yet. They are gonna add more stuff edit: I see you've said it in the video but I still wanna preface it!!
Yes! I did try to bring this up a lot during the video; because it’s important to remember that Stardew has been out 8 years and had multiple updates while Fields of Mistria has been out for 2 weeks in Early Access so they’re not really comparable. But a lot of people were comparing so I wanted to do it properly!
Very good video! I'm honestly a bit torn on whether I want sprinklers in Fields of Mistria. On the one hand, it would make watering large numbers of crops easier, but on the other hand, once I reach the point of automation, I start feeling a disconnect with my farm work, personally. My only real gripe about watering the crops is that it takes the same amount of energy to do it no matter what level your tools are - even with a silver watering can, watering a 3x6 plot will use 18 energy, it will just do it faster. (Same goes for the hoe and shovel, though I haven't bothered testing charging an axe or pickaxe.) If there was some energy-saving measure included, even if it was just saving one-third of your energy when charged (so a 3x1 plot uses only 2 energy instead of 3, 3x3 plot uses 6 instead of 9, 3x6 uses 12 instead of 18) it would go a long way toward making having a large field of crops feel fulfilling to me. That is one thing I feel Stardew did better (or at least made it less noticeable) with its tool proficiency, but that pretty much becomes a moot point too once you automate crop watering and get iridium tools that can fell trees in a single chop anyway. In regards to calling FOM a Stardew clone, it really just makes me sad that people reduce whole genres to "clones of the first one that made it mainstream," especially when the one that made the genre mainstream was far from the first in its genre or even genre-defining. Stardew to farm life sims, Pokemon to collect-a-beast or monster raising/taming games, same feeling...
Farming Life Sim games all have basic commonalities - it's part of the genre. You farm, fish, mine, ranch, meet people and so on. I wish people would just give each game a chance and see what it is that each brings to the table on its own. FoM has it's own lore, and has quite a different feel to it as you play. Nothing will replace SDV in my heart since it was the very first farming life sim I played. I'm loving Fields of Mistria for what it is - charming! It plays well, looks great and has various QoL factors that just make it a joy to play.
It makes sense that a new game would take inspiration from Stardew and seek to improve aspects. To me it doesn't need to be one over the other. Just celebrate a new addition to the genre.
In FoM to get around always forgetting to send my animals back inside before racing home at 1am I've taken to letting them out first thing in the morning before watering my crops, then sending them back inside right before I leave the farm for the day. It seems like just letting them outside for a short while to see the sun is enough to make them happy, though I do feel a bit bad when I sometimes let them out and have to immediately send them back inside lol
I love stardew and have hundreds of hours in it. I'm absolutely adoring fields of mistria! It has so many upgrades that stardew didn't! You can tell it was made by a team with a ton of love ❤
Honestly speaking I didn’t really like Stardew Valley. I bought it around when it first came out and I didn’t like any of the characters and a lot of the ways it handles things just kind of frustrated me. The big reason I bought the game was because marriage wasn’t limited by gender, but the game just overall disappointed me. I ended up buying Rune Factory 4 and never looked back. And my feelings towards Stardew Valley only grew more negative because people keep treating it like it’s the gold standard of farming games. I really do not like the writing of the game, and I just found games like Rune Factory 4 and 5, and FoM to have much more appealing characters, writing, and gameplay. Sure, the characters might be more simple, but I think farming games just overall work better if they are more simple. For these games to work to me the characters need to be zany. The town itself should be a place I would like to live in. Character development for Stardew Valley is locked behind heart events and the characters never made me even want to follow their stories. I love FoM a lot though, its been giving me the same feelings I have while playing Rune Factory.
I love the colors of Fields of Mistria, but I love the more detailled textures of Stardew Valley. I haven’t played this game yet, but I think I will have a hard time to have a preference
honestly I love FoM but the only thing I do not like is the spawnrate of fish and bugs. They don't respawn when you're at the map so you have to manually walk out and re-enter the map to spawn more. Bugs even is random if there WILL be any spawns. Bug hunting at night is awful in that term "cuz that "common firefly" is getting into the rare category lmao
I've got over 1,600 hours in Stardew Valley, easily making it one of my favorite games of all time. I look forward to seeing how many hours Fields of Mistria pulls out of me once it's out of early access 😅 But seriously, both games have their strengths and weaknesses people!! Stop pitting them against each other and just love them as they are!! 😂
What I think Stardew won despite copying HM, is the highly modify-able system, the simple pixel art and game makes it that a lot of people can give their own mod that satisfy a lot of wants and needs of many different kind of people. Don't like the color? Mod. Don't like fishing? Mod. Want to add more characteristic to NPCs? Mod. Want to add even MORE characters AND places? MOD. Edit: FoM would be highly modify-able too from what I see, the fan base would only grow larger due to that.
Something that i like in field of mistria is it fixed some problem in stardew valley like.... we can swim... better quest guide.... npc on map.... weather monitor...etc but the game still in early access.... sometimes i got a framedrop.. its weird for pixelate game.... but i hope it getting better soon

Oooh this is such a good point that I didn’t think about (mainly because I also skip the Stardew events because I’ve done them so many times now 😂)
It is really nice that Mistria starts you with a chest although it’s much easier to build a second chest in Stardew than it is in Mistria which I think cancels it out 🤔
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! There are so many more things to talk about, but I think it gives a good overview ☺️
@@CozygamingclubI've been buying all my chests from the start. 250 for a chest is a steal! Cheaper than strawberry seeds! 😂
This was so fun to read through 🥰
Yes!
Come on devs if you read this 🙏
Thank you so much for this incredible comment!
@@Cozygamingclub Thank u so much Ellie! 🫶🏼
Enjoyed the video! I'm really tempted to play FIelds of Mistria now but I also want to give the devs more time to cook.
Thankfully these games will be good regardless of what people who don't know their history say.
lets not forget that fields of mistria is in early access so it is not even finished yet. They are gonna add more stuff
edit: I see you've said it in the video but I still wanna preface it!!
Yes! I did try to bring this up a lot during the video; because it’s important to remember that Stardew has been out 8 years and had multiple updates while Fields of Mistria has been out for 2 weeks in Early Access so they’re not really comparable.
But a lot of people were comparing so I wanted to do it properly!
@@Cozygamingclub Bless you for that! A lot of people judge on face value and it's kind of sad to me :
best Ellie quote from video "i don't care about the kids" .... in fairness she was talking about the games, but still great.
Don’t take my comments out of context 😂😂😂
All fellas knew the OG farming sim was back then marvellous and natsume were together.
if it stardew copy then every farming game is havest moon copy
I never liked stardew valley ups.. but I LOVE Fields of mistria (finished everything till new updates) ❤🎉
Oooh this is good to know! Thank you for the tip. I’ll definitely start doing this 💛
I love stardew and have hundreds of hours in it. I'm absolutely adoring fields of mistria! It has so many upgrades that stardew didn't! You can tell it was made by a team with a ton of love ❤
21:27 if you upgrade your water can, it lets you water multiple plants at the same time
Honestly speaking I didn’t really like Stardew Valley.
Like Stardew Valley wasn't a Harvest Moon clone 😂
I personally think that there are a lot of similarities I feel could've been expanded upon, but it's not a clone obviously
I love the colors of Fields of Mistria, but I love the more detailled textures of Stardew Valley. I haven’t played this game yet, but I think I will have a hard time to have a preference
I think the only thing they're guilty of is figuring out people liked Harvest Moon on SNES well after we were past our prime :(
honestly I love FoM but the only thing I do not like is the spawnrate of fish and bugs. They don't respawn when you're at the map so you have to manually walk out and re-enter the map to spawn more. Bugs even is random if there WILL be any spawns. Bug hunting at night is awful in that term "cuz that "common firefly" is getting into the rare category lmao
wonderful video. so well thought out.
Thank you so much Forchy!!! 🥰
@@Cozygamingclub no problem, it's just the truth :)
I've got over 1,600 hours in Stardew Valley, easily making it one of my favorite games of all time. I look forward to seeing how many hours Fields of Mistria pulls out of me once it's out of early access 😅
But seriously, both games have their strengths and weaknesses people!! Stop pitting them against each other and just love them as they are!! 😂
How was jumping (especially over cliffs) and jumping not mentioned! Or was it and I missed it? I easily could of, lol.
I mentioned it under other things at the end along with swimming!! Both huge improvements that I love about FoM!!
Something that i like in field of mistria is it fixed some problem in stardew valley like.... we can swim... better quest guide.... npc on map....
weather monitor...etc
but the game still in early access.... sometimes i got a framedrop.. its weird for pixelate game.... but i hope it getting better soon
stardew is inspired by Harvest Moon and Minecraft. Its normal. Stardew isnt the only game in the genre.
Great video
Thank you so much!!
Yes theyre both Harvest moon clones. 😂 also FoM is superior. Why you ask? You can jump and swim. That is all.
Play Harvest Moon DS and then tell me Mistria is a Stardew clone lol
Stardew is ugly mistria is pretty. That's all
I just bought this game haven’t played yet,I may have made a bad investment 😢…….
.
the game is amazing! both are. they're just of the same genre.
Why do you think that? They’re both amazing games and definitely worth playing!
@@Cozygamingclub thanks that’s very reassuring!
absolutely not impressed with this game. its a poor substitute for SDV
hard disagree 😭 stardew is not the only or even the best farming game, chill
For a game that made by a group of people, Field of Mistria visuals looks very cheap compared to Stardew Valley who made by one person.
Can I say Sun Haven blows Stardew out the water
I’ve not played that one yet! It’s high on my list to try though
Ugh I liked it but having so many fans is too much
