I'm glad this movie is more commonly getting recognized as a classic. But how society treated this movie back then will always messed me up. The main characters go through severe emotional pain throughout the whole movie. AND we witnessed ppl get their life brutally taken for expressing a basic human emotion. Not to mention, this wouldn't be as impactful if it wasn't for the acting, brilliant use of subtle storytelling and the cinematography. And yet, this movie was reduced to a quick sex scene AND it was made into a punchline of many jokes. Seriously? Wtf is wrong with some ppl? The only highlight of that homophobic era, is Heath Ledger's king behavior. He turned down performing at the Oscars cuz he was disgusted by the homophobic jokes they made. And unlike the public, he didn't see his role as "risky" or "brave". He said he's just acting and there's no bravery in that. He wasn't interested in the politics or a grand message while performing this role either. He wasn't aiming to represent a group of ppl. He said this movie is purely a statement of love. And wanted to make sure he does the script justice. He was just so mature about this whole thing. And may not be much now, but in the 2000s, where it was the societal norm to mock, shun or ignore homosexuality???? That will always be special to me.
I could not agree more 😢this is not a movie to be reduced to a joke, it’s not remotely funny, a really respectful and genuine reaction would be so appreciated by so many people and a shared queer experience….don’t turn our lives into an uncomfortable self conscious giggling joke 😢
I was pretty young back then. But i remember the backlash from batman fandom when ledger got announced as the joker (it was 2006), hundred comments and 80% of them are just people throwing homophobic slur at him and calling him too pretty for the role. Glad he shut their mouth but it killed me to think that he died thinking people from the community (DC) doesn't like him :(
@@marcwilliams1331 I don't think you'll find the reaction that you are looking for anywhere on RUclips - it's one that's grounded in your own unique relationship with this movie and in the context of when you watched it. It's also one that's mostly silent, which defeats the entertainment purposes of the video! 😅
I agree that the ending feels unsatisfying and kinda unfinished - but that's sadly how many, many gay love stories ended in the real world during this period of time. Cut short with little or no closure, and the survivors (if there were any) left to carry on and try to find some peace or happiness while carrying a loss they couldn't even talk about openly.
I felt the same when i first watched it like the ending felt too unsatisfying and sad. But over the years I've come to just appreciate the value of having a gay movie, realistic of time and setting, to experience the full range of emotions like I was part of it. but mostly i just think about the bussy full of beans
The ending was what it should've been they were gay in the 60s in a region that would never understand them. I thought the ending was fantastically tragic.
It's clear this film affected you, and how could it not? It penetrates deeply into issues fundamental to our shared humanity, never mind those of us who are gay, of whom I am one. I grew up as a gay man at the time this film is set and in the Western American setting it portrays. So I can tell you it is 100% accurate and owns its place among the great masterworks of American cinema.
I was searching for videos to show to my son (4 year old), and after he finished the video, he came to me and told me that "The reaction of this RUclips is harmful for the lgtv+ community, such as the inflation in the polarization in the debate of the genders and sexualities and so forth. Therefore, this youtubers reaction should have been of one member of the community, crying and throwing up", and then everyone in the kitchen table gave him a standing ovation. Just wanted to share. #slaymama
I'm sorry but how was that NOT a good ending? Jack was dead, Ennis couldn't scatter his ashes. That's it. He still managed to find a piece of Jack to hold on to. Not all stories have a happy ending, sometimes you have to accept that some stories are just sad. Brokeback Mountain wouldn't be the movie it is if it didn't end in the way it did. And there are few movies you can say that about.
you watched the wrong Ang Lee film for pride, he made a movie more than a decade earlier The Wedding Banquet, now you have to wait an entire year to watch that
I’ve only just recently found your channel from watching horror movies and I think your commentaries are really sweet and funny 😊 I don’t really like this one though only because I don’t think making fun of a movie with serious subject matter that affected so may queer people is remotely appropriate, does that make sense? This movie broke my heart on so many levels 😢 I’m 💯 sure you had no intention to offend anyone, I love your reaction videos and will continue to watch them, I’m just a little uncomfortable with this one 😞 xx
Robbie stop talking! Lol I feel like you’re missing something and not paying attention. This movie is so beautiful and so horribly sad and heartbreaking. I can’t believe you didn’t say how incredibly F/ing Hot Jake Gyllenhaal is in this movie! I’ve been crushing on him since “The Day After Tomorrow” but in this omg he drives me wild… You should really watch movies with a buddy and bounce off each other it will be so funny Xoxo ✌🏼
This is a nostalgic one. I watched this and nolan's batman trilogy in one night, very random choice of movie ik😂 jokes aside,I love these folks (the actors),they got so much shit for this movie yet they defend it anyway, mind you,it was 2005.one of them (ledger) even refused to go to Oscar because they want him to make a joke about this movie. sad that he couldn't get his Oscar.
You know? The word "gay" does not occur one time in this movie. Let's see. I know we've only got 12 more minutes to go, but it's time for me to leave. Bye-bye.
The film takes place over a 20 year period (1963-1983)in a part of the country where the term "queer" was used. And they used that word in the film. You missed the ending and the whole point of the movie.
@@valmacclinchy I took the time to watch the end of the reaction. "That's it?! Now, don't piss me off, bitch. I understand that this was a very important movie that we needed to have in the 2000s, . . . but fuck, that was awful. And not like it was a bad movie." And then the alternate ending. "That was a movie, huh. I like'd it, yeah, . . . but I'm going to have to . . . like grieve with it, and go with the process myself. . . . And I'm a little bit angry with how that movie went." So what did I think of the movie? I thought it was really sad, but it wasn't just a tragic romance. I thought it was very insightful about the effects of homophobia, including internalized homophobia. I seldom shut down a video before it's over, but I found this one intolerable. I'm sure my post was meant to be sort of a polite way of venting my frustration.
@@valmacclinchy " . . . makes no sense" to you. My original post was a reaction to the reaction, not a reaction to the movie. Beyond that, I cannot help you.
It's a sad movie, but unfortunatelly, life is sad, for us lgbti+ community, even sadder sometimes. But this kind of movie makes us realize how much we've acomplished today!
sorry- watched five minutes of your commentary, didn't find it funny or inciteful. ...this is a great movie, i'll watch a different reactor who might treat it with a little more dignity.
