- What is the best American Girl doll to get as a beginner or new collector that is currently available as of 2021?
The obvious answer would be a doll with short, straight hair but I wanted to share some dolls that may not have came to mind such as Melody Ellison, Truly me 76 and some more "advanced" dolls such as Kaya. When you pay over 100$ for a doll, you don't want to ruin it, so it's best to start your collection with an easier doll to take care of and not a hard one with complicated hair. Of course there are more dolls that aren't in this video that would be good for beginners, but I wanted to recommend dolls I have experience with that are in my personal collection.

Melody and Truly Me #25 are such great starter dolls! I agree with so many points you made in this video, and yeah, I think that getting a doll like Caroline as a first doll definitely doesn't always work out. Some of my first dolls were Rebecca and Saige, and while Rebecca's hair is fine, Saige's is unable to be salvaged. Anyways, this was a really great and helpful video and I would definitely recommend this video to beginning collectors!💖💕

My first AG doll was Chrissa, but I was 40 years old. :) My daughter's first was a Bitty Baby which was definitely a good choice for a 5 year old.
#25 is my first doll and I have had her for 6 years! She is pretty much in perfect condition. Also Melody is so gorgeous and great for anyone.

I got Caroline as my 3rd doll when I was 5 and it was a BIG mistake! My first two were pleasant company molly and Samantha and I should have been more careful( but I was two😂) I agree with u soooo much!
my first doll was GOTY 2014, Isabelle!! she’s amazing, and my second doll is #25, which is awesome. they both are sooo easy to take care of!

My first dolls were 22 and 60. I had just taken down my 89 doll’s hair down. She has beautiful waves. But some of her hair has fallen out and I am very careful with her hair. Somehow that happens with a new doll. But, I will keep my eye out on her. I’ve had defective dolls that lost a lot of hair. I am an adult collector and older. So, I know the difference.
I got felicity first because she was one of my dream dolls since im a red head who loves historical stuff and now my second doll marie grace is payed for and I cant wait to get her
Amazing video! I thought this was a great video! I totally agree with everything you said except for Julie I think her hair is very hard to maintain.
My first doll was My American Girl 13. I got her when I was 6 or 7, so she was supposed to be my look-alike (she isn't anymore). The brown straight medium length hair is super easy to take care, though she doesn't have any special features. But, the bangs!!! I love her bangs!!! Anyways, awesome video! :)
Julie has always been easy for me since her hair is very straight. I’ve had her for 7 years in June and her hair is still very soft.
You forgot Kit Kittredge. She is an awesome beginner doll. There are many on the secondary market as well. Her hair is sooo cute.

Juniper is looking so good! As you probably know my first doll was Kit so probably the easiest doll ever to take care of.
She’s definitely another great beginner doll but I don’t own a Kit
Before I got my first doll(Luciana) I watched a LOT of videos on how to take care of AG dolls so she is in perfect condition :)
Great video! My first doll was Lea... big mistake! Her hair is horrible now because I was kinda young when I got her I guess you could say and so I completely ruined her hair haha! I’m glad you said that melody’s hair is easy to take care of because I always thought it wasn’t just because it’s textured. I really like Melody and I think she’s so cute I do really want her so maybe I’ll eventually get her!
My first doll was Marie-Grace, and I do have to admit I did not take care of her as I should've. I brushed out her curls until they were frizzy and at the time, I didn't know using a plastic comb or brush would damage a dolls hair, so the bottom half of her hair was a wreck.
Then one day I decided to do a makeover... and cut a few inches off... I also left her in the sun for a bit too long and now I have to add some more color to her lips in post-processing, lol.
Oh no!! Marie Grace is one of the dolls on my wishlist!

kit and ruthie were my first dolls! kit is sooo good for a first doll, ruthie is okay but not the best. my next dolls after that were caroline, marie grace, and cecile. not the best idea for a five year old 😂😂

You could buy a new wig that looks like hers!
You could buy a new wig or save up money and send her to the doll hospital 🏥 for a new head you should talk to your mom

I was pretty young when I got my first doll, Truly Me 64, but she’s in decent condition. I’m thinking of saving up some money to send her to the doll hospital soon to get her wig changed considering I was young and used a plastic brush on her 🤦🏽♀️

I have 25 (my lookalike) i love her! She is the best doll to take on trips because her hair wont mess up easily. Also something very important is to spray your dolls hair before brushing it, otherwise the dolls hair will get dry and frizzy over time (i know that from experience 😬)
I feel like Julie isn’t a great first doll because she was actually my 10th doll and her hair became SUPER frizzy easily , same with Kaya but not as bad. Other than that this is a great list!

Blaire was my first doll I got her when I was 8! Her condition is amazing! I have my life as dolls and our generation dolls before her so I was good with the care but really the only doll I have with frizzy hair is my first my life as doll rose she has frizzy hair that was because the ability was not good but I was also 5 soooooooooooooooooooooo some how I managed to not reck my other my life as dolls so I'm not sure what happened! My newest doll is Courtney! I think her hair is really pretty! And I do such braid Josses hair but take it out in 4 days or less! Also I thought my Josses hair was just thin! Thanks for saying that!

Isabelle the girl of the year 2014 was my first doll and I got her when I was 4 and shes still in really good condition! I did get 2 really tight curl dolls even when I older it’s extremely hard to take care of it!

I got tenny when I was 6 or 7 I was very young but I took good care of her I had my mom brush her hair but that time we did not know we need there brush and I brushed her hair if my brush ! So her hair is a mess all the time !

Addy and #26 was my second. I also have Melody and Kaya. I’m thinking about getting MaryEllen.
My first doll was Grace and I got her for my 10th birthday in 2015. I cut her hair in 2016 and I replaced her head in 2019.
My second and third doll is also recked but I stopped playing with them a year after I got Lea. I started playing with them in 2019 and I got Luciana, she has perfect hair but it took years to actually learn how to take care of their hair.

My 1st AG doll was a #22...but my 2nd one was a Julie & my third one was a #25. They’re still in pretty good condition though they’ve needed fixing up over the years. But I definitely agree with these recommendations!

My first doll was Elizabeth Cole. I didn’t know how to take care of her hair so it was a frizzy mess until my teenage girl cousin who loves working with hair fixed her for me.

Curly hair isn't hard to maintain if you know how to take care of curly hair. Evette was my first doll and I have no issue with her since my own hair is curly

Great vid! I have to say I do take care of my dolls pretty well. I have truly me #59, #69, and I also have GOTY Kira Bailey. My parents said I can only have ONE more doll “and after that one thats it.” And all the dolls I have are white skin tone dolls and I was concerning getting GOTY Gabriella because she is a black doll but as I am new to getting dolls I don’t know if this doll would be the best option because of her hair being to hard to take care of, but then again this would be my LAST doll I’m I’m just thinking that in the future I will probably want a curly hair doll. What would your opinion be on this situation?
P.s. #59 was also my first Ag doll and BELIEVE ME I know how hard #59 is to do hair styles on!😅
There are a few dolls with darker skin who's hair is easy to maintain such as Melody, 47 etc, so maybe get one of those dolls? Also when I was younger my parents were like "no more dolls" but I pay for all of my current dolls with my own money, so they can't tell me to stop!
