Is Thermal Technology for Birding a Game Changer? (Teslong Thermal Monocular Review)

  • I test a thermal monocular for the first time to see how well it works for birding. In recent years, thermal technology has popped up as a birding tool, but many thermal devices are extremely expensive. This one is around $600 which is still pretty expensive, but in comparison to others (~$4000) it's much more reasonable.

    Cool! I think the eBird Big Day Team Sapsucker used something similar in South America for Least Seedsnipe last year.

    great video, thanks for taking the time to help us birders, i’ve been birding for 42 years now, i will never have the money for the high end ones for sure, but i have one with the same specs as this one on the resolution, and it goes on my cheap android phone and has a focus knob, what we can see with these is incredible compared to a few years ago, prices much higher for these specs, i’ve been using image stabilization binoculars since 2017 and they are incredible compared to regular binoculars, back to the thermal imaging,if you want to see more details your going to have to spend many thousands of dollars!! as far as details when looking through one of these the father away the less detail you can see, even with ones with some magnification 3 to 10x say, the more you zoom in the more the image quality goes down, with these devices you are only zooming the image and the quality goes down, but i just got back from down the road and watched 2 woodcock s and 2 i couldn’t see,they were singing and doing the sky dance,they showed up great on the ground but like you they were just nice hot spots, didn’t try to follow them with when they were doing the dance, but i could hear and just see them with my naked eyes, i think that a thermal is really fun,and that’s why i got one, not a serious thing for me, just fun,again thanks for the video’s, and get yourself a good pair of IS binoculars lol.

      Thanks so much for the comment! I’ve demoed the IS binoculars once at a festival and I have to say they were super cool!

    I have been using similar devices for about three years now. On my second unit because I wanted to upgrade to a higher resolution. I’ve had mixed results with birds, but works great for most other animals. The most important factor is temperature differential. My unit needs about five degrees difference to show up well.

    Thank you for producing this video. When i researched for thermal monoculars almost all of the content was hunting-oriented (larger mammals). But it’s clear that it really helps with birds too. Now waiting for my Pulsar Axion to arrive

      Yes! It’s great. They have a super rare Guam Kingfisher there

    About what temperature was it outside? Another comment mentioned necessary temperature differential

      It varied while filming. It is easier to differentiate animals at night though since there is less residual heat from other objects that get heated up by the sun.

    would love to see more of these. Do show the more expensive ones

    I have used really high end thermal cameras. I could see a mouse running around in the yard, dog footprints across the floor and, briefly, farts.
    I think it would be great for finding long eared owls.

    I think bird feathers are most likely a bit better of an insulator compared to fur on a mammal, so that could lead to mammals showing up better, and appearing hotter.

      Definitely possible. Some of the higher end thermals pick up the heat on the birds a bit more clearly-more on that in a later video

    Used these on a fire department I worked with. If you want to have fun take it out to a cemetery in the winter. Really freaky

    You must have read my mind because I was just thinking about getting a thermal monocular to find nocturnal birds during the day (not to disturb them of course).

    Does it work at night for owls or hawks?

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  5 месяцев назад

      It should work for owls. I tried to find one that I know is in the neighborhood but never managed to pinpoint it enough to feel confident it was in view to see with the thermal.

    Class 3 laser! Don't point it at people. But go ahead and point it at birds (!!!???)

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  5 месяцев назад

      Haha, the laser pointer on the device, not just the device on its own.

      You don’t have to use the laser and is switchable.
