Interesting but I guess this only works on a narrow use case where the actual attachment included in the email is of a supported document type (such as csv, xlsx, doc etc). Would this also work if said documents are password protected limiting access even if the password does not change and is known to the database admin or power bi admin? In most cases as others have mentioned, you do get cases where emails containing data come with zip (protected or unprotected) or embedded emails as the available attachments. In such cases, I presume we would be unable to use the method and will probably need to enlist RPA tools?
In that case the next refresh won't have that email. unless you use Dataflow Gen2 with Append scenario which will keep the history in the Lakehouse or Warehouse. which is my recommended approach
this is only for O365 and Exchange email services. for other services, you may be able to use get data from Web and use the APIs to call, but not all email providers give you access to their APIs.
Excellent information, thank you. I'd not even considered this route before. Question....what happens if the emails that the attachments came on are deleted? If you refresh the query will the query error out as it can no longer find the source or will it simply leave the existing data in place? If it loses the data then I'm back to storing the attachments in and SP folder somewhere.
If the email address doesn't exists anymore, then I guess you will get an error. That is why an approach like using Dataflows and loading into a Lakehouse or Warehouse with Append Data is usually a more reliable option
@@RADACAD Thanks Reza.....yes, I'm talking about the email being deleted not the email account....but if I understand correctly if this method is used to pull the data into a dataflow then whether the original email exists or not is irrelevant...the old data will remain accessible. That would be great.
Thank you for the video, I found it interesting and good to know. Keep up the excellent work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much. This will come in handy for one of the projects I am working on.
You are welcome!
How is this performance-wise with thousands of emails? Can you filter the initial query to Exchange, or do you have to fetch all before you filter?
Thank you very much Reza. Is there a way to extract an email’s attachement within another email. I’ve got issues with such scenario…

Great video, very handy. What happens when email is deleted or retention policy removes it? Thanks

How can we connect to different email than outlook?

I'm not sure what you mean, but it works in Fabric, Dataflow Gen2, Power BI Dataflow Gen1, M, and Desktop everywhere.
I have my volume full blast but the its hard to hear :( Never mind the volume is better now)
