    I’m a bit jealous of the rain you’ve been getting. We are about two months in with no rain and our fall growth has already came and dried up. Not looking good for a fall flow. About half the honey from the same time last year.
    Thanks for another great video! Look forward to seeing you guys in January. 😃

      Here in the South, it has been raining so much that we are having to mow at least twice a week to be able to walk through the grass. We have a field of clover that the bees love. The clover is now just about finished and we are moving with the blade set high to leave most of the remaining flowers while getting rid of the Johnson grass and overgrowth from the hayfields around us. I wish we could send some of that rain your way, Larry Lee’s Bees.

    • @burleybeeyard

      @@theohiohousewife Not sure what opinion? From my understanding it’s very nutritious for the bees. A lot of people let the bees keep it all because they don’t like the flavor. I myself love the taste. It does smell kinda funky when they bring it in.

      @vlunceford 3 года назад

      I spread a bit of diatomaceous earth around the hives, up to 2 meters. Inexpensive and it drastically reduces the beetle count

    Hey Kamon, the other day I saw a hobbyist beekeeper putting a 32 frames horizontal hive in his shed with the cover removed.
    He then put 3 deep honey supers at the end on the right.
    He drilled a hole on the wall of the shed and used a 2" dia pvc pipe for the entrance.
    He said that his set up produced as much honey as a regular double brood colony.

    Noticed the tote that you put your honey frames in. Where can we find those and what are they called? We tried a horizontal hive this year and pulled 170 pounds of honey. We feel that’s it’s a harder hive to manage. A lot of bridge comb but can’t complain about the amount of honey we got. We’ve learned a lot from watching your videos. Thanks for your help.

      Having this type of hive myself, no. you can use any of the other treatment methods as you would with the vertical Langstroth hive....laying it across the top bars or between frames. There is the usual bee spacing under those top covers and between them and the top bars of the frames.

    I'm really interested in those bee bread frames. I see a lot of bee bread frames and it seems like they can never use them for anything else. Do they go bad? Do you ever have to scrape them off and let them start over? How much bee bread do they actually need and Hive? Two full frames seems like a lot?

  • @VaderSpade
    @VaderSpade 3 года назад +3

    All that bee bread is due to lack of brood to feed it to until they got the new Queen laying.

    I can't seem to manage to shakebees. Never was good at it then I broke my wrist last fall so now it is darn near impossible, especially if full. I have taken to thumping my frames, if I can I do it infront of the hive, with what you have, I just do it on the frames. Surprisingly, it really does not seem to be much of an issue.
    I had the issues with the ants, tried cinnamon and it actually works very well. This year my problem is earwigs, horrible!!!

    • @LarryLeesBees
      @LarryLeesBees 3 года назад +1

      Hey Hyfy1970 - I’m not Kamon 🤣 but I’ve been using the Hive Butler for two years and it’s made very well with extra space for wider honey frames. The only place I’ve noticed that it’s a bit tighter on the thick frames are the edge locations. It is a little close to the wall. Other than that, I’ve really liked the versatility of the Hive Butler. It’s also great for swarm catches. I’ve caught two swarms using the Butler so far! 😃

    The steady rains this year have prevented us from having the normal dearth. I've got 5 acres white with clover and the bees continue to bring it in. In a normal year the clover starts declining right about at the end of June....which of course is when the bees need it. If this weather pattern (eastern WV) continues we'll have a record fall flow.

    As interested in the long langstroth hives as I am, I'm not sure they're as productive as the standard hives. The issue for me, is my back is is horrible and there's no way I could lift a full box for harvest.
    Kamon, under normal circumstances with a good queen, could you harvest more than just once each season? Giving the bees more space more often by taking that honey thru the season?
    I seems like you would need to leave them quitea but to get thru winter, so you couldn't get more than 20 frames of honey anyway. And I've seen you pull 5 boxes of some give standard hives.
