The Hot Licks video "Latin and Advanced Jazz". Emily explains that she figured this all out on her own after finishing at Berklee. I found this video at the local library in Blacksburg VA after having come back from a 3 week Jazz Camp at Manhatton School of Music in 1992. While staying in New York I discovered this bar named "Auggies" a few blocks South on Broadway, which was a veritable "Mintons". There was a young grad was playing every night with pick up bands. His name was Peter Kraus I believe, and he played for $45 a night and they would pass the hat. There was no cover to get in, but get this, all the guys that were playing around like Kenny Drew Jr., Joshua Redman, and some cats that I didn't even know existed would come in after finishing up their paying gigs and play with Peter and his Trio. I took 3 lessons from Pete at $40 bucks a pop and he taught me just about everything that he had learned from Rodney Jones while studying at MSM. The point is, that I learned more from one Video and one guy playing in a bar than I ever learned from any of the teachers I studied with in 6+ years at College.?! Why did I even bother going to University?

Emily Remler was really good! I never heard of her until a few years ago and I saw a video that looked recent. I thought she would have a great career. Sorry to learn she died twenty years ago.

I saw her at a show and she could not play much. She was a mess, really nervous. It is always difficult to survive as a jazz musician. Struggle + drugs = disaster. What a waste. RIP Emily.
