His parents were gone I'm guessing at a young age. Since she served the royals as a high rank advisor she was the only one who could teach him to be emperor. We don't know how she raised him. Even if she was strict all the other attendants spoiled him. I think she raised him as an emperor not a son it shows how nervously professional she talks to him at the start of the movie.
If you watch carefully Yzma was the one who raised Kuzco so all his negative attributes can be assumed were her doing because Yzma really is a bad person no matter how fun she is to watch. That and her original goal was probably power behind the power like what Long Fei did to the King of Ba Sing Se. But when that stopped being an option she went straight to plan B murder.

I imagine she was also his royal advisor. It isn't hard to imagine that if he was a wiser, less petulant rular than his son that she may have actually liked him. Her bids for power may have only escalated when a self absorbed manchild took the throne and made a mockery of the seat of office. Between her megalomania, scheming nature, and having an idiot on the throne (easy prey), she may have been inspired towards her treasonous ambitions.

Yzma was portrayed as evil but Kuzco largely earned the treatment. Especially with how faithful she was to his family. Would have made more sense if she changed her mind after seeing him change. Which is most likely too complex of a plot point for a kids movie.

Ugh I hated the way the show ended. Yzma should’ve had a redemption arc 😔 or at least showed up in the end credits or smth. I loved her sm 💔

Yzma isn’t even evil don’t forget in the movie she let Kronk have dessert and a coffee break, let one of the servants be excused because he was turned into a cow she may be the only villain that’s actually nice she only wanted to get rid of Kuzco because he fired her

Yzma was portrayed as evil but Kuzco largely earned the treatment. Especially with how faithful she was to his family. Would have made more sense if she changed her mind after seeing him change.
Which is most likely too complex of a plot point for a kids movie.
