- The plaintiff rented a room from the defendant. He says the defendant kicked him out of the house and stole his jewelry and other belongings, so he’s suing for damages. The defendant argues the plaintiff was a troublemaker who didn’t get along with other people. She admits she kicked him out, but the defendant left behind trash. The defendant is countersuing for damages and unpaid rent.

Exactly! Nobody does. But watching these court shows makes me want to keep receipts at least for expensive items. I say anything over $100 that's of value, a receipt should be kept. Or if you use your bank or credit card that may help show proof, though the statements usually don't say what was purchased, only which store the purchase took place. There's this app where you can take pictures of your receipts and have record of them. I may need to look into that.
A credit card receipt, or the items bought online are easier to show proof for (gathered BEFORE court of course). I save receipts for bigger items just put it in the same folder. Some throw em in a showbox... but I agree you don't save receipts for every little thing.

Right! Judges get on my nerves asking for receipts when most of the time you don't expect to ever need it for court. That's why I pay with a card so I can have a log of purchase if necessary.
Don't be a fool cause she doesn't need every single receipt. All she ask for is at least some evidence. Even pictures would suffice
If you purchase on a card you can always get receipts... When you purchase with cash for an expensive item it's common since to keep it 🤷♀️

Plaintiff left under a hostile environment. People act like "oh, why didn't you take this and that", I know when I am amped up, under a stressful situation, I am NOT thinking of packing up jewelry, laptops, and all my valuable items. Especially if I had my partner with me, and wanted to get her out of that situation. Especially if I think my room is locked and secured as well.

I’m not taking my stuff if I needed to get out fast. In fact, this happened to me last year for 3 months. Things were not okay at my house. I’d leave & stay with friends- living out of 2 back packs & NO JEWELRY & NO LAPTOP. I left them.

He didnt need to get out fast. He already left called the police and they escorted him to grab what he could fit in his car. He stayed at his mom house till the 10th. Why wouldnt a laptop be safer at your moms house than a psychopaths? Just like the judge said. He is stupid.

If he left 90% of his stuff behind, then of course he'll leave any receipts he had behind... and yeah, when you're trying to hurry up and leave a hostile situation, you only get the things you need for a day or 2, and then come back with a large vehicle to get the rest.
Watching court tv growing up taught me to always take pictures of my expensive items and their receipts when I’m renting just in case they get damaged or stolen

Except he wasn't being rushed, he wasn't fleeing. The police were there and he had all the time in the world. He somehow had the recipt for the teeth but nothing else? If I were being kicked out and had 5 minutes, yea, grab things i need but also grab small things worth thousands. Dude was just broke and took advantage of another scammer. Now he has an eviction on his record.

For small everyday things, no. But for expensive things like sound equipment in this case, sure. If you don't have a CC bill, email, or anything like that, put the paper receipt in a box or something. The judge shouldn't have to guess because of a plaintiffs irresponsibility for large purchases. It's exactly what a receipt is for, proof.

When I was 18 I got in a fight with my landlord and decided to leave that night. I get paid for the full month, so that night I only packed an overnight bag, with toiletries, clothes, and an Xbox for something to do at my mom's house. When you leave in a haste, especially uf police are involved, you don't think about grabbing things like jewelry and sentimentals. Came back literally the next morning with a truck and everything was gone, even the furniture? Luckily i was able to get it all back after threatening law suit.

So if someone clears out all your stuff including your paperwork or receipts then how would you be able to prove the purchases. The only idea I had was if you were fortunate enough to have used a debit or credit card there will be a transaction to view, but if you paid cash then your absolutely screwed. Can anyone honestly tell me they keep the receipts for the t.v. laptop, or sofa...?? I know after a few months I can't read the dang things due to ink disappearing.
I take pictures of important receipts bc the ink does fade after a while.

As a landlord, if I want them out if you take rent then you forfeit the procedure and have to file in housing court. And she took ownership of the property after the fact because the home was in foreclosure.so technically they would pay rent to who?? Until she has the deed and ownership then who they gonna pay their rent too??

But if you were paying attention, you would have saw the jewelry & also would have heard them say, she wasn’t paying the mortgage so that’s why everyone in the house stopped paying rent. Not one time did anyone say he couldn’t afford it.

I think JM missed the key thing. The plaintiff left under hostile conditions and left to cool off. The agreement was already in play. Hence, he had a few more days to move. No one thinks, "Oh, let me grab my expensive things right now, even though I have locks on the door." Also, that music equipment is not cheap. The only thing I see is that it was difficult to prove to the jewelry (grill). Even then, grill ranges from $500+ per top or bottom.
