RM was often told by some people to stop using filters during his vlive. Taehyung was once told by someone that wearing glasses doesn't suit him. But as you can see, they both did it on the IDOL MV, maybe as a sign that they don't care what haters say to them, because they love themselves.

The lyrics that talk about them having many selves within themselves is essentially a variation on the phrase, "I contain multitudes." Aka, I'm a complex person who is constantly changing and evolving, and I'm still learning about various aspects of myself whether that be interests, past memories resurfacing, mistakes that make me confront a darker side of myself, etc etc. They aren't cardboard cutouts; they're people, and every day they're a little different than they were the day before, because yesterday influences today and today influences tomorrow.

I think the next MV you’ll enjoy seeing is Spine Breaker. THis one’s a totally unique one because it’s “home made” in every sense of the word since they were challenged to plan, design and shoot it themselves in a hotel while on their concert tour. The way they did everything guerrilla style using what’s on hand and one handheld cam is quite interesting I think even for non technical people like myself. There are many personas inside one person. Example: RM is an idol, was a rapper, is a leader and also apart from all this, he is Kim Namjoon (himself) who loves art, is clumsy, loses things, is a person who thinks deeply, reads alot and so much more despite the persona he creates on stage for himself. We have different personas too. We’re different people Professionally, with friends, with family etc. So they’re saying that so many personas are within themselves but they accept it all and love themselves.

There's actually a lot more to this video than he covered. E.g. they chose the colourful over the top aesthetic on purpose bc haters would criticize them for colourful concepts. Yoongi was called pale or something by haters so he wore a snow white sweater. RM using filters bc he was criticized for using them on lives. They used an African dance and lots of traditional Korean dances too. They were also wearing modern hanboks and had traditional Korean fans. They were criticized for becoming 'too western'.
My interpretation of a few things: sitting at the table represents how they made a seat for themselves at the table to be taken seriously as artists then at the end they are in front of it bc they are beyond that level. The ship/plane and globe representing their journey to global domination.

Koreans don't actually look at Idol music as real music. Kpop is a separate genre within Korean music, the overall Korean public actually prefer solo artists who do ballads, rnb, and trot as well as indie bands. Kpop is on the same level as Disney music in Korea basically, a Korean fan said if you were to ask any random Korean on the street to name a Kpop group today it will probably be BTS, Blackpink, Brave Girls, Twice and that's it. Kpop is made to appeal to western audiences, hence all the English in the songs, names, having English/Japanese speakers in the group, having foreign members in the group, etc. I'm assuming you live in the U.S, think about all of your close friends, family and acquaintances, how many of them regularly listen to music outside of their native language or follow foreign celebrities?? Well it's the same in Korea. As mentioned before Kpop is made to appeal to the west hence all the rap, hip hop, edm, rock influences, which is why it is HUGE amongst the international audience and someone like yourself who is very new to the genre would have no idea that Kpop isn't actually as popular in Korea as it is overseas.

Hello, I am a Korean living in Korea. I can't say what you said is wrong, but I hope you think not all Koreans ignore idol music. Idol music is one of the genres of kpop in Korea, so idol music is considered that way by the older generation just as the younger generation does not prefer the trot you mentioned. I think the reason why you think idols are being ignored in Korea is because older generations are mainly dominating the media with power. So the younger generation in Korea never ignores idol music.
And although idol entertainment has no choice but to run idols considering overseas markets to make money, plz don't say that idol music is only for overseas markets. You know what? It's because of the hard work and love of Korean idol fans that you got to know about Kpop and idols. That's one of the I want you to know. And I hope you don't rely on Internet information when you talk about Korea, but talk to Koreans in person. (especially young generation) But the in-depth criticism of Korea's view of idols was very good. Thank you!

I would like to add one more explanation. "Idol" in Korea is a little bit different with the English meaning. It is a word to call all boy/girl bands in Korea, so it is more like a "job." Usually there is a producer that makes their songs, and the boy/girl band will be trained to sing, dance and handle interviews etc. Even if one is not famous, if the person has gone through this process, s/he will say her/his job is an idol. This is why musicians look down and don't think they do actual music. However, the idol industry in Korea is evolving, so more and more idols are also trained to produce and compose.
The idols might be looked down by other musicians, but for other people, many admire them, as we commonly agree that it takes a lot of work and effort to get trained, usually 3-4 years or even more. 3-4 years of your teen life is a big thing!
I hope this helped you understand the Korean culture a little bit more. :)

the dance that Jimin does with the fan during his falsetto solo is a reference to buchaechum, a fan dance traditionally done by a troupe of female dancers. the fact that Jimin is the one to do this is a response to haters saying that he's too feminine, has too high of a voice, is too "girly"--like how Shallon Lester mocked him for wearing makeup on a poster and called him a girl. Jimin is singing in his falsetto (a """"""girly""""" voice), dancing with a fan traditionally used by female dancers, and looking into the camera with makeup on--essentially saying, "screw you, I love myself the way I am."

For example, JK is a singer, dancer, song writer, composer, the main vocalist, the youngest of the group. senior to the members of TXT, a painter, an athlete, etc. He's also someone slightly different to each one of their millions of fans. In addition to all of that, he's still finding new things to learn and experience, and new sides of himself on a regular basis. The other 6 members are the same. Many people are so close minded and only think of them as girlish performers, gay, plastic, not as valuable as singers. I find this really rude and offensive, even disgusting. So watching your videos, hearing you talk about the beauty in their work and saying that it is beautiful, without thinking that it is unmanly or cheap, makes me so happy. On the surface, accepting their 10,100 selves sound to me like it refers to their changing looks, style, posture even, mood etc. Fans often comment that one has been a joker is later sullen. Or another one who is light hearted composes and sings a song about being in the depths of depression. They go from slim to muscled weight lifters, from having stylists give them coordinating looks to choosing a specific design house for their own fashion. They learn so many things, like languages and instruments, that they’re never the performer by their next album. Closest to their theme, they are all working on loving themselves.

Mulitple parts of yourself - Everyone has different faces/persona's that they show depending on the situation and who you are around. You act one way with your parents, another with siblings, another with friends, and another at work, etc. They acknowledge that they are different things to different people but they are really just all the same person. --- Map of the Soul, Carl Jung.

"10,000 persons inside me" refer to different persona everyone exhibits - one is be a son/daughter, a colleague, a friend, a neighbor, a brother/sister, mother/father, boss, subordinate, someone's enemy, etc - all in one, and in each persona we exhibit different aspects of ourselves, both consciously and subconsciously.
But in BTS, this is multiplied a hundred times more. Take RM for example - he is RM, an idol and the leader of BTS, while at the same time he is also Rap Monster the kick ass rapper, Kim Nam Joon a regular korean guy, an influencer, an inspiration, etc so they carry a heavy burden. But they are saying they have learned to live with it and love themselves with all of their different persona, warts, and all

I think IDOL is partially connected to the MotS series where they discuss Persona more. When they talk about having multitudes and tens of thousands of themselves I believe they are tallking about different personas. If you are more curious about this aspect, you should watch DKDKTV's videos explaining Persona, Shadow, and Ego.

The meaning of 10, 100s of people inside me, from what I think, is that they have different personas everyday. And that a new persona is introduced everyday.

Idol music is definitely viewed as "low art" in korea. Popular, but without much artistic merit. There have been groups and individuals that have been able to break out of that mold and be taken seriously as an artist(s), but it's few and far between. The only comparison I can think of is how someone would perceive a nick/disney star starting a music career. Like they can be taken seriously, like for instance Ariana Grande, but most aren't.

The shark seems to reference an art installation where a shark is contained in a small tank. A being of so much power but now caged to be observed by others. The stage BTS is standing on mimics a cage, as to say they are now the shark inside, being observed by other sharks who are eager to devour them. This could be the entertainment industry, the media or just ill wishing onlookers. However, BTS maintains their autonomy in embracing & celebrating themselves despite all the prying eyes. The installation had a preserved shark but it’s cage is very reminiscent of BTS’s stage. See - “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living” by Damien Hirst. It’s also notable that this installation became a symbol for British art around the world… much like BTS becoming synonymous with what people first think of when they hear of KPop or Korean music/art now. I think the Bookish Theory explanation shows the shark installation that they appear to reference. Their video also delves into some of the other art & patterns displayed throughout the MV. The drum instrumental & beat is African, so the patterns of their clothes along with several visuals also hark back to African art. I don’t recall if there was a specific country the beats were inspired by but the Gwara Gwara dance that they incorporated into their choreo is from South Africa. Cool stuff! A lot to delve into for a music video 😅.

I think the part when they say they have 10s 1000s of them inside means there are different versions of ourselves. There’s the Alex who is happy. There’s the Alex who cries. There’s the Alex that works hard. There’s also the Alex that likes to chill. All of these are different versions of Alex and accepting and welcoming them is essentially loving yourself.

I no longer follow dkdktv but their explanation to Idol and Ddaeng is exceptional.
Edit: SoKor's GP is notorious in judging the artist. From their looks to talents. Even they go beyond in using media as their weapon to cancel that artist. That's why some of them resorts in suicide. Artist couldn't handle the pressure their own fans and GP does to them. They have a lot of double standards, like what happened to An San (SK's elite Archer, and Triple Olympic Medallist) was cancelled by her own SK Feminist because of her haircut, like HAIRCUT?! If a woman cuts her into boycut that means it's more practical, less time in washing their hair, plus she's an athlete of course her hair should be her least priority.
As for BTS, they went through with backlash, petitions for them to disband, even in person they get trashed by the speaker or interviewer, and back then when they performed it is cut by the media by not airing the performance in national tv.

In Korea, the idols were not considered as musicians. They treated them as well trained entertainers. So being looked down is not the people in general, but more of the "professional" musicians and critics. Well, it is only my opinion as another Korean.

its because you think idol = celebrity when thats not the case.
idols are a specific type of music in korea and kpop is not even really well liked in korea.
theres whole other music industry's outside of kpop/idol music in korea. kpop is not korean pop or korean popular music.
theres a entire pop scene, rock scene, hip hop scene, r&b scene, trot scene etc that are separated from kpop. kpop is seen as the disney music of korea. bts is a group that many koreans say have surpassed their idol/kpop niche and theyre true artists.
many koreans will tell you kpop is not popular in korea for adults. but bts is loved by all age groups.
the same can be said about singers like IU or a group like epik high who while they are signed to kpop labels (or were signed to kpop labels) theyre not really kpop.
its very complicated due to the false narratives the west has about kpop and trying to push all korean artists into a box so theyre not taken seriously outside of korea/asia. in a way koreans do the same to kpop but thats a whole other conversation.
you should react to bts vs kpop by bbygang and youre wrong about kpop by bbygang.

The word "idol" is used with different connotation in the west and in Korea. In the Korean music industry, they call boy bands and girl groups pop music = idol music. (They don't call it K-pop, that's a term created by western media.) "Idols" is how they call the members of girl and boy groups who sing and dance pop music. And the reason they're look down upon by the general public, it's because of the generalisation of "all mainstream pop music and young pop acts make superficial catchy music that has no substance/no deep meaning". Hiphop is a huge genre in Korea, and the reason why underground or independent rappers and fans look down upon "idol rappers", is because most idol rappers don't write their own verses... Which means most of them are not "real rappers" immersed in hiphop culture (rap comes from rhythm & poetry, being a lyricist who expresses your own personal thoughts/feelings/experience/who says your TRUTH, that is the soul of hiphop music), but simply entertainers or performers who can rap lines written for them. They are seen as people who can rap, not as "real rappers". And that is, often, a reality, but there are exceptions.
So yeah, the word "idol" is NOT being used here in the sense of "star/extremely famous or sucessful person".
