    This was a great talk if you are against it that means you didn’t really listen because when you listen effectively you learn something from it and try to add it to your life. If you fight against what he’s saying your not willing to learn something or break a bad habit which are sometimes the hardest things to do but when you actually feel it and comprehend what he’s saying then you would try to break that bad habit of not learning something new and applying it to your life. Try something new it may save some lives or your own!! Each one teach one

    I’ve always said that the issues that America are experiencing with regard to racial discourse is due to the inability for Americans to possess a shared American identity. There’s Irish American, Italian American, African American, Asian American. America’s history plays a huge part in this, people don’t want to claim that history and I can’t blame them but at some point you have to look to the future and want to work to make that future better (and you don’t have to ignore the past to do that but we do have to learn from it) and I don’t think you can do that by only talking about the things that make us different. Racism should never be ignored nor should we attempt to erase the different cultures that make us interesting, but at some point there needs to be communication that doesn’t end in accusation. And people who abhor racism need to work together to end it.

    I also got that talk, was taken to church, was taught manners, respect and how to be a good person. I was also taught I was no better than anyone else, no matter how they looked. There were clear consequences for my actions from my earliest memories. Most people that are given this sort of upbringing turn out fairly well. Most people that don’t, turn out poorly. Why aren’t we talking about this more? Genuine question because it applies to any color, any race.

      because people cannot stand as individuals and have to rely on race to make all their assumptions about someone. Look at the comment section. Its filled with people who would rather generalize entire nations of people instead of educating themselves and making themselves better. You have comments where im assuming white people are speaking about being the only non-minority person in a situation and feeling "scared". They're numerous 1st generation non-white immigrants who lived in lets say America who also were the only person of "color" in certain situations. They adapted so you can too. The biggest reason I believe your comment won't get much likes or support is because many don't like to look at themselves as the same as everyone around them. Instead they will say "due to (fill in the blank) I am better then said person". Its the human condition but when you add "race" as the basis of whether someone is successful or not it gives certain groups a sense of superiority even if that person hasn't accomplished anything. Unfortunately all races suffer and the people who are here saying the solution is to "send all blacks to africa" "build a wall against illegal mexicans" are missing the point entirely. Barriers have been created to keep all races out since humans have lived on this planet. IT HAS NOT WORKED..all it has done is caused more issues where millions of people are killed or enslaved. Instead of speaking separation and hate let us figure out how to develop and grow each other as human beings so we can all live better lives. If you believe your way to a better life is by not talking to other races then don't talk to them. Simple as.

    I am a NY Italian woman, aged 75. I moved with my husband from NY back to his old home in New Orleans, and I find for the most part an ease of exchange between cultures and races, mainly because New Orleans IS such a kind of melting pot. But every now and then....(I call this episode "Peeing While Black') I remember about three years ago, coming in to do my wash at a local laundry, run by an Asian woman. I saw up on the wall some signs regarding change machines and soap, that sort of thing. And I noticed a foto' wall of shame"..troublemaking customers (all of them black, natch), who were 'to be watched closely'..Now of some of these people might indeed have negative agendas. But being a NY-er, I was used to minding my own business. I let it roll. Over at the dryers Iike thirty minutes later, there was a young African American man, had his clothing spinning in a nearby machine and was reading a book. Very pleasant guy; we started chatting. Five minutes in, he politely excused himself, walked over and said to the lady, "Sorry, ma'am can you open the bathroom for me?" (It was under lock and key.) She immediately flew off the handle, yelling, "Only customers can use the bathroom, you are not a customer...." I looked up at her, took a pause, and without hesitating, calmly stepped in. 'This man's clothes are in that dryer!", I said, not raising my voice, but...motioning to the nearby machine. "He was already here when I walked in a half hour ago..that makes him a customer.." Resentful at being challenged (and by a white person!!) she did not apologize for her mistake but went and sullenly, opened the bathroom door. Later, as our car pulled away the young man, outside the laundry on a smoke break (his name was Kendrick, I don't think I'll ever forget him), thanked me and off I went. I could have continued to mind my own business. But what happened was wrong, and in a small way I wanted to step up and admit it WAS. And help put it right.

    Does any one commenting here know world history in general? Racism is a prominent part of any countries history. Doesn't matter what nation you come from its there. There is no exception. Racism will never be truly resolved. Its technically impossible. To this man's point - Ask your self what is one skin color that is universally discriminated against through out history & present day? Undoubtably People of darker skin. American, South american, asian, Europe, & even in mother Africa. You have to be ignorant to Deny that. However, his point is people still need to try to educate others on racial sensitivity and the reality you are in.No one is saying all white people are racist. If you are white you will never know whats it like be discriminated against on daily basis because of your skin. Like how no man will ever truly know what woman go through on a daily basis just for being a woman. Yet mothers and fathers will still try to do their best to prepare those kids for the world ahead of them.

      Humans are very predictable. They'll claim benefits where they can get them and avoid costs where possible. We create self-defensive theory and moral law, solely designed to protect us wherever we can and design the categories we use around that purpose. When we create these theories, we do not measure on what is most true, but what self-protective theory/law befits us better and de-fits the opposing party we're trying to beat. We are then dependant on the opposing party to fall for this trap and mistaking this to be "true".
      We both know you aren't obsessively concerned with herbivorous conciousness creation and needing to desparately "educate ourselves" as a society on this. ("educating", as in wrongfully implying it to be a step upwards).
      This type of behaviour is called "hypocritical" and often seen as a bad thing among intellectuals.
      Throughout your comment you've been very deceitful. One might say you work as "god intended to".

    I have lived all over the eastern coast for all my life. Silvie Fein well, statistically, black on white violence is far more prevalent than white on black violence. So when people do see interracial violence, which isn't that common, what they're likely to see is what CHAS1422 saw. It's a lot more telling that you assume he's right wing and lying despite the reality. I wonder why you would assume he's lying, despite 5 out of 6 interracial violence incidents conforming to a similar narrative to his?

    • @CHAS1422
      @CHAS1422 6 лет назад +2

      Technocracy: How do you explain the fact that there are wealthy and middle class Black people? I used to live in Atlanta. Black people were hired all the time. Sometimes they worked well and the company profited and so did they. Sometimes they were terrible employees. It appeared that there was even a preference in spite of competence to promote in order to secure local affirmative action bids. Seems the narrative lie of "structural racism" is a leverage tool used for unfair racial advantage.

    • @jarfuloflove7320
      @jarfuloflove7320 6 лет назад +1

      Technocracy capitalism is an economic framework, or the 'rules' of the market, and as such, is not built on top of anything. Your statement is literally meaningless, yet you accuse those who disagree with you of ignoring reality. The rules for sports are a framework, yet many sports were segregated. If I said basketball was built on top of racism, and therefore its rules will produce a racist structure where black people have always and will always remain the poorest players, you would question my sanity.

    If you identify with your race first instead of who you are as a person you have the same problem as people who see race first in others.

    • @DavidBlaze420
      @DavidBlaze420 6 лет назад +25

      Riana Henderson Why? Does a black man have to identify as black first which separates him from others instead of identifying as human first which connects him with others? This is even more true for white people because for many this is accompanied by a false sense of superiority, but this can happen with any race if you focus on the cultural differences instead of what we have in common. Xenophobia and chauvinism are natural defense mechanisms of the human mind which were useful when people had to defend themselves against foreign tribes and intruders because everyone who was different could be a potential enemy. But in an advanced society where many cultures live together this is regressive and in the way of creating a peaceful community for everyone. Of course we need to remember history, but not so we can identify with what has always separated us, but to realize that because of our history we need to focus on what we have in common: We're all people. But of course I'm an idealist and most people like to think in groups like 'them' and 'us' because it gives them a sense of affiliation.

      Every single comment in this chain is correct in its own manner. The affirmative is true because we should strive to eliminate "race" from our vocabulary and visual acknowledgment.
      The opposition true because history has subjected many cultures to a fraudulent narrative perpetuated by "race". The term has been ingrained in the world's perspective and will not be eliminated without first recognition being applied.
      Race was a fake idea orchestrated by our ancestors in a time where knowledge was primitive. Yet the population allows these ideas' continuance to plague the mind.

    I lived in Detroit for a short while. One time I walked into a black barbershop, everyone froze, including customers, and stared at me like I'm an alien. That was stressful. But it's funny looking back. I was probably the only non-black ever entering their shop. Haha...

      Racial relations actually worsened during the 8 years of Obama presidency. Now I wouldn't risk entering a black barbershop and having a potential BLM activist hold a knife near my throat. I got plenty of options where I live now ;-)

    • @mhtinla
      @mhtinla 6 лет назад

      Just want to add a little explanation... In my barbershop experience years ago, I don't think what I experienced was hostility. They were just uncomfortable, curious, and didn't know how to react. But hey, everyone needs a haircut regardless of skin color. But today, due to heightened SJW movement and media coverage, I can no longer afford assuming every black I encounter is non-hostile, and risk my own safety by invading someone's safe space. Haircut is just a tiny thing in life, so I choose the barbershops I don't have to think about this.

In my hiring consideration these days, I stay away from those who are likely to demand a lot of safe space, or even request me to step down due to my privilege. After all, I'm running a competitive business not a college campus. So far there's been no racial stress in my company. Lucky me ;-)

      I get what you're trying to say (I have social anxiety as well), and it's true unfortunately many white people get accused of being racist for no reason and there's no way to "prove" that you're not racist. But you have to keep in mind that for many black people it's just a defense mechanism. I'm black and I've been living in a white family and a white small town my whole life. With the people I know there are no problems, but when I meet a stranger and see him/her acting weird around me all I can do is "guess" if the problem is my race or something else. Unfortunately racist people are around every corner, and some of them are just jerks, but others can also be dangerous. Obviously this doesn't justify anyone to accuse a person of being racist for a petty reason, but I hope you understand that it's not as simple as social anxiety=racist

    • @dennisklomp2361
      @dennisklomp2361 6 лет назад +2

      Fiorenza, I can completely understand why a white man acting awkwardly around you makes you go defensive. I don't know how many dangerous people you have to encounter, But its probably higher than anyone with a good heart wants to imagine. I always hate to make someone feel threathened just because I am fumbling around, trying to act correctly. 😂Be it handicapped, young kids, women, coloured, the social pressure makes me see the differences, when I wouldnt as a kid. Sad thing really

    ohhh i get it now where the dislikes are coming from. its the zimmerman thing. And I'm sorry but I agree. The story I heard about that is different than the story he tells here. What i heard was the story of a latino man who was tired of gun violence and gangs in his neighbourhood. So he decided to start a neighbourhood watch. And he slowly but surely made his neighbourhood safe again. The police recommended he get a gun, and he did eventually due to the threats he had to deal with. Then a boy who was displaced by society came with his mom or single parent to the neighbourhood for a short while. And he was an angry teen getting fked over by the world in all sorts of ways. And he was out at night. This latino guy stalked this kid, as he thought the kid was a gang member or something bad. And the kid interpetted the stalking as just another white guy trying to mess with him. So he shouted at him to go away, but the latino guy didn't go away. That's not how he was able to clean up the neighbourhood!
    And then the kid confronted and attacked him, probably out of anger and a sense of self-preservation (self-defense on the offensive). And after shouting for the kid to stop while getting beaten to a pulp....zimmerman drew the gun and protected himself (he coulda died himself if he didn't do something afterall, some random guy is beateing you and you are yelling stop but he isn't stopping).
    He called it in right after. Zimmerman was acquited, and rightly so imo.
    But then he had to flee his neighborhood and his entire family received death threats, and his life is ruined basically in all sorts of ways due to these continuous death threats and stalkings of him and his family he tried so hard to protect.
    Is this fair on either side? no.....it isn't. So let's not take sides on this. Here he is taking a side on it, and its unfair. Tthe speaker's point still stands here even if he gets this example wrong/tangled. Is that fair though? You see people on the opposite side misquote and spell fake news to a similar effect afterall. There's so much inequality that we do let the speaker and others like him off with this stuff though....just cause we see the inequality and we feel so bad. Even if they get it wrong here and there sometimes its allowed. Whether thats okay to allow it or not.....is a long debate in and of itself.
    It's easy to see where the dislikes are coming from.

    I have no words, because apparently constructive rhetoric is too painful for our society these days. I'm sure we can cure "racism" within a century, if children mature unaware of the subraces we have today (based on complexion).
    *child comes home from school, crying, in the year of 2157, where humanity has transcended race, and achieved total assimilation of species*
    "Greg said I was so dark, that I might be a black hole."
    *tear streaks down his face*
    "Oh honey, don't worry about it. Greg is overweight himself, he might as well be a supermassive black hole."
    This model signifies a transition from a population that is susceptible to the "toxin" that is racism today, to a resilient, and utterly tolerant, population of the future.
    All of the above can be achieved with a patient, and progressive parental body.
    (Note that I identify with no race, because I know that in doing so, my comment will be artificially charged, therefore rendering it useless in effect)

      Diax1324 Do keep in mind the context in which Mr. Freeman said that in; it definitely makes more sense if you just go watch the entire CNN interview

    • @Diax1324
      @Diax1324 6 лет назад +4

      It's a terrible sentiment regardless of context. You can't ignore problems. That's not how you solve something. White people certainly aren't giving up race, and they act like black people are the ones maintaining the issue.

    • @RyanJones-lv9dj
      @RyanJones-lv9dj 6 лет назад

      @Diax1324
      I am by no means defending his statement as a solution, as I don't agree with it either and Mr. Freeman wasn't intending to be taken out of context as such.
      However, context does make a large difference in interpreting the meaning of that first quote. Mr. Freeman was saying that *specifically to the CNN anchor* , not as a solution to racial anxiety in general. @Backtobassics500 is erroneous in using it without proper context.
      Keep in mind your generalization on white people is only exacerbating the issue at hand; debate people based on their actual opinions, not the opinions of some stawman.

      AvgJane19 That's an ignorant response. That's the problem. People choose the most extreme situation. If someone is calling you that why would you want to laugh with them? By the way, not as many people would call you that as you think. Have the people at Ted tell it, it's just about everybody. Learn to hope for the best out of everyone instead of expecting the worst.

      @@ehron214 This is happening every day all over america. Here are two clean cut, professional and god loving successful black men, who were working with men with nooses and slurs just because of the color of their skin. When you are working with men who want to roll the clock back 100 years and have you be in fear every minute you work alongside the, how do you find something to laugh about that. My guess is Aaron lives in the white flight, and doesnt even live in the vicinity of people of color, so its easy for him to say so. The worst fear Aaron has had is being called a word, whereas there are black men, even in established professional places who have to experience threats to their life. www.cbsnews.com/news/toledo-gm-plant-gm-acknowledges-shockingly-racist-incidents-at-toledo-plant-amid-lawsuits/

    So this man decides the best way to keep his children outside of racial violence is to tell them that 'white people think you're lesser' because that doesn't implement prejudices into their minds? I think racism could be stopped easier if we didnt try to think of solutions based on people's color. That itself is racial. If you tell the generalized white population they need to not be racist, and tell non white people, they need to watch out for whites, or be careful, or that they are hateful, and to watch out. That does nothing to fix the divide. Talk about solutions that everyone can work on, dont think 'us and them' think 'us, all of us'.

    Stevenson told a politically easy lie to his 8-year-old son. In fairness, Stephenson may not himself realize it was a lie.
    The lion's actual story does not make a hero of him. Treyvon Martin was walking through a gated community where he did not belong in the middle of the night. Zimmerman did not "stalk and kill" Martin,, though he was following him. The same way someone responsible for security at the community would follow a white teen who didn't belong. Stephenson implies that Martin was shot while minding his own business. Martin was on top of Zimmerman beating the crap out of him.
    As a black activist Stevenson could not and apparently still cannot consider the idea that Martin did anything wrong. Stephenson judged Martin by the color of his skin, not the content of his character.
    Martin trespassed. Teach your kid: respect boundaries.
    Martin reveled in his ability to fistfight. He made a youtube video about it. Martin was shot at point blank range because he very likely picked that fight. Teach your kid: maintain humility, keep your temper and never throw the first punch.

      He wasn't talking about who invented it, so what are you talking about? It was actually more of an Anti-SJW thing, and it is a well deserved accusation based on the delusional leftists tendency to react with anger and bigotry at anything that they disagree with or that makes them uncomfortable.
      "all of earth witnessed"
      The YT comment section is all the earth now? Or are you claiming that every "trump" comment is denying historical racial crimes? Either way is false and delusional.

      Being racist isnt illegal. One can make fun of and exclude anyone they wish based on whatever prejudice they have for any reason they want. Racism is an excuse for uneducated, unqualified, and untalented persons to excel where they would otherwise dwindle out of existence from.
