    John Hicks in Concert: amzn.to/2J9ExRh
John Josephus Hicks, Jr. (December 21, 1941 - May 10, 2006) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. He was leader for more than 30 recordings and played as a sideman on more than 300.
After early experiences backing blues musicians, Hicks moved to New York in 1963. He was part of Art Blakey's band for two years, then backed vocalist Betty Carter from 1965 to 1967, before joining Woody Herman's big band, where he stayed until 1970. Following these largely mainstream jazz experiences, Hicks expanded into freer bands, including those of trumpeters Charles Tolliver and Lester Bowie. He rejoined Carter in 1975; the five-year stay brought him more attention and helped to launch his recording career as a leader. He continued to play and record extensively in the United States and internationally. Under his own leadership, his recordings were mostly bebop-influenced, while those for other leaders continued to be in a diversity of styles, including multi-year associations with saxophonists Arthur Blythe, David Murray, David "Fathead" Newman, and Pharoah Sanders.

John Hicks! Yes he really is one of my favorites in jazz. I heard him once live in Stockholm with Charles Tolliver and that is a memory for lifetime!

John was a brilliant pianist, and an even nicer man. I had the honor of being his friend, and will always remember our last conversation. I miss him the way I miss Roy Hargrove.

Just review Hicks's discography. He made so much great music with so many different musicians who played in so many different styles. He could do everything, and do it beautifully. I used to go to hear the Mingus repertory band when it played at the Under Time Cafe just hoping to hear Hicks on piano.

    Wow! Fantastic video!
I must have seen John Hicks a couple of dozen of times in the 1980's, mostly at Bradley's on University Place in the village. He could whip up some FIRE on the piano, but could also play some beautiful stuff!

The same guy - Jack Sherlock who owned The Tin Palace starting in 1977 - also owned The Surf Maid on Bleecker St. in Greenwich Village. I hung out at The Maid a lot and gigged there also in the late 70's. Loved that joint! I never went to The Tin palace but was aware of it. Now I wish that I had gone there! Kenny Kirkland hipped me to The Surf Maid by taking me there in 1974 when Joann Brackeen was gigging there often. Kenny and I became friends whilst we were both attending The Manhattan School of Music. I left NYC in 1980 after having lived in Manhattan for a few years. Hey Jazz Video Guy, I very much like your channel, Keep up the fine work, Thanks, sincerely, Piano Man Larry Hunt (my recently launched channel btw is TheEternalNow channel, hope that you will check it out).

Used to see his name on albums sometimes. When his name was on the credits, i knew the pianist was on my 'favorites' list! He didn't NEED to be famous...he was better than that. I had missed 'missing' John Hicks. Man, they seem to have EVERY app except for the 'back in time' app. Damn. Was it not long ago that you posted 'John' casually playing around with "Lush Life" ? Anyway, Thank you, MUCH appreciated!!! Pc~

The piece the Messengers play is _On the Ginza_ by Wayne Shorter, although he's not present here. We get a glimpse of John Gilmore on tenor. Listen to John's descending run at 1:39. This little motif is part of the main melody strain, I know, but I've heard it somewhere in a much more popular/commercial context, in a movie, a jingle or even a ringtone. Can anyone put me out of my misery, please? I'm wrecking my brain, to no avail so far.
P.S. Your new look becomes you very well, Bret!

Of all of the things that I've heard from John Hicks, the intro to you've got to have freedom singularly has left an indelible imprint on my soul, just a "MASTERFUL" performance on a "MASTERPIECE" of a song, stuns me every time I hear it,😆..... the fluidity, oh the fluidity,.....
