Strava for Day 1: / strava
In this episode, I was dropped off at the mouth of the Trent Canal into Lake Simcoe (just north of Beaverton) and paddled the canoe north-east to the Kirkfield Liftlock. I took the canoe through 6 locks: Gamebridge - Lock 41, Thorah - Lock 40, Portage - Lock 39, Talbot - Lock 38, Bolsover - Lock 37, and Kirkfield - Lock 36. I paddled through the Talbot River and Canal Lake. I camped just beyond the Kirkfield Lock Station and in the evening I walked to the nearby community of Kirkfield for dinner.

The canoe is a Bluewater Peterborough 16', made of Kevlar and manufactured in Guelph, ON in the early 1990's. I filmed this video using a Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone. The GPS I used for the trip is a Garmin eTrex 30.

Thanks for watching.
Did they finally shut off the generator?
Yes, thankfully they did. I later learned that there is a Generator Policy and people are allowed to run them until 10pm. The owner of this generator followed the rules.
Another great adventure CJ you are the best showing us another side of our great province. I have tried to convince my wife to travel to Kingston from Ottawa by canoe.I will show her this video and she is inspired. CHEERS.
Thank you. Kingston to Ottawa is on my bucket list too!
I'm going through your videos and enjoying a different view of the lock stations. That generator though... I'm glad I didn't experience that.
Thanks, glad you're enjoying them! Thankfully the generator went off shortly after I finished filming. I later learned that Parks Canada has a policy that generators are not allowed to be run after a certain time of night (10pm I think).
The generator though... wow.
Thankfully they shut it off shortly after I stopped recording.
I’m glad I found your channel… Any thoughts or advice I’m planning a through tour… kayaking expedition, George and Barry delay Ontario via the Trent? (yes what time of year did you go? And how are the mosquitoes/horseflies? 😳)
I've had good experiences with doing this type of trip in late August. My that point usually the mosquitos have mostly died down, and a lot of the cottagers have gone home for the summer, which means less motor boat traffic. After the Labour Day weekend, the lock stations transition to shorter hours which add some additional challenges if you are planning on camping at the lock stations or using the locks themselves. Best of luck in your adventure!
I grew up on the talbot river. great fishing!
I really enjoyed your complete adventure. You are very knowledgeable, not one gap in your video, you always have an interesting fact. You really did your homework. Also, Thanks for no nonsense background music. Just curious how much weight u lost on ur trip. It looks like you burned more calories than u took in. Also I had no idea the amount of hydro power being generated. Such a valuable resource we have here.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words! As I recall, I think my weight remained about the same, though perhaps I converted fat into muscle. Having done bike tours in the past, a canoe trip like this didn't feel like as much of a physical challenge.
Just wondering how your muscles adapted to paddling vs cycling? Whole different group of muscles!
I was surprised how quickly my arm muscles adapted to it. I really didn't find paddling very tiring, and at the end of each day I didn't feel the same kind of exhaustion that I'm used to feeling after a day on a bike trip. It's a very different activity.
We call it bolsover “balls-over” . I don’t live there but have been visiting during the summer for years. Really want to Kayak this area as well!
After posting this video I received a tweet from the Trent-Severn Waterway's official Twitter account informing me that my first pronunciation was correct: 'bowls-over'.
that guys generator would have been in the river...100%..... some people need to be tough manners
Thankfully they shut it off soon after I stopped recording. If they had left it running much longer, I certainly would have confronted them. I later learned that the TSW has a Generator Policy and people are allowed to run them until 10pm.
what permits/reservations did you have to get? lock fees?
I addressed that in detail in the introduction video that I made for this trip (link in the video description). To summarize, I purchased a seasons lock pass for the canoe and camping was available at many of the lock stations on a first come first serve basis. The only tricky part was that I needed to arrive each day before the lock office closed, which was more difficult towards the end of the trip when they switched to their fall hours.
What did they charge you for loçk and camping fees?
Camping fees were $5 a night. Lock fees are based on the type and length of vessel. I believe I included the amount that I paid in cost breakdown at the end of Day 14.
Oh by the way Chris, this is just an idea: in terms of your bike trips, have you ever thought about cycling more north, like areas such as Parry Sound, North Bay, Timmons and Sudbury (in more northern Ontario)?
Pretty ignorant boaters running the generator, if you ask me! Can't enjoy nature if that's running!
Unfortunately Park's Canada's policy allows people to run a generator until 10pm. Thankfully this boater followed that rule and didn't run it all night like I was afraid of!
This looks like a great trip! Did you have any problems with bigger/motor boats during the trip? Also how does food storage work at the campsites?
No not really. Every now and again there were boats or jet skis that would not slow down when coming past me which made big waves for me, but I never felt in danger. I stored my food in my airtight dry-sac each night.
@@cjhoyle Awesome, thanks! Going to do part of this route next week and this video was really helpful!
@@Arogayoga Awesome, enjoy your trip!
Nice adventure, CJ! Too bad about the generators. I Have been on several camping trips where folks use them with RVs. Sometimes, the thoughtless ones run them all night long. I hope your neighbors were considerate enough to shut them off.
Thanks. Yes, thankfully they were considerate. I later learned that the Trent-Severn Waterway has a rule that people are only allowed to run a generator until 10pm...not that there is ever anyone there to enforce that rule.
Always watch the whole vid when you have bike series. Thought I would get a chance to skip forward a bit on this canoe adventure.............. Nope! Watching the whole thing as usual. You have a great ability cj to keep it interesting. Great job and well done.
Thank you, I'm glad this adventure is enjoyable to follow!
Just kayaked last weekend from Balsam to Kirkfield. Defiinitely want to do your route, coming from the opposite direction, next year.
I actually read your post in the 'Kayaking and Canoeing in Ontario' group about paddling that route! Sorry to hear the wind was so unfavorable that day. You'll definitely recognize a lot of the scenery from my Day 2 video.
Thanks for sharing your canoe trip. I'm a canoe paddler but have never taken it through a lock system. When I'm not riding my bicycle, I am usually going through beaver dams and creeks. I'm hoping you don't have to listen to the generator all night.
Awesome! Thank you. Yes, thankfully they did. I later learned that there is a Generator Policy and people are allowed to run them until 10pm. The owner of this generator followed the rules.
Seeing all the locks is amazing! It’s like riding with you on the canoe just like on the bike! Thank you Chris! Looking forward to the next instalment!
Thanks, I'm glad my content translates well to canoeing.
At first I was a little on the fence about this new series...How is he going to narrate just paddling along all day and make it interesting for the viewer.? But then after thinking about how I watched your first videos of your land based series I have much to learn about the river system in our province. So after was all said and done I definitely will give it a thumbs up and I will have my notifications set to watch the next part of the series. Also sidenote the overnight oats has now become a staple at my breakfast table every morning. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us
Thanks, I'm glad this first episode was a valuable viewing experience. Very cool to to hear that you're enjoying daily overnight oats now too!
Is that a new tent this year, or borrowed from your parents ?🤔
Bye the way, love the new video series 🤗
Thanks! The old tent I used to use was my parents. The new one is mine. The old one was over 35 years old and the floor is not completely waterproof anymore, so it was time for an upgrade.
Thanks for sharing Day 1 with us. A wonderful bonus to have favourable winds when traveling under your own power. Even the rain didn't dampen your adventure!
Thanks, it was a great first day of the trip which helped prepare me for what was coming ahead on the longer distance days.
Glad you enjoyed your new adventure. The scenery was very nice. Looking forward to the next installment. Thank you CJ!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it too!
Really enjoyed this. Looking forward to the next installment.
Thanks, I'm glad to hear!
were you afraid of lighting during the storm?
Not really, because the weather forecast wasn't calling for a thunderstorm, and I didn't hear any thunder (the wind noise picked up by the camera sometimes can be mistaken for thunder). Of course, if I had heard any, I would have proceeded to shore immediately.
Thank you, enjoyed it. I hope to catch your other videos.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Thank you.
Curious. Do you have to pay to go through the locks?
Yes you do, but portaging them is also an option. The previous video I posted gives a bit more background on my trip, including why I decided to buy a lock pass.
I want to make this trip. Thanks for the tour!
It was a lot of fun, I recommend it!
That was great CJ
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome!
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's interesting to see how it would be travelling the waterways with something like a canoe. Love your videos by the way!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
