Matt has the fighting game gene. not many people can go 75+ matches without winning. if he learned a punish combo, he could start getting good and then call Shane a button musher

@Spitsworth I would say they're an unfamiliar genre for most but it's not like Starcraft difficulty. I could talk all day about fighting games, man!
I think newcomers have trouble with understanding hitstun/blockstun. Whenever you're struck with an attack (or if you block), there are a number of frames where you can't do anything - think of it like different attacks inflict different lengths of 'mini-stuns'. And so you have to press buttons when you're about to leave the duration of that ministun in order for your character to register the button-press. Newcomers simply do not understand when they're allowed to press buttons because they don't know when exactly they're stunned.
A knockdown is the most obvious kind of stun. The person on the ground can't attack, right? The person hovering over their body can't typically attack a person on the ground either - they have to time their attack to land on the very first frame the guy on the ground becomes available (when they're getting up). And so the guy hovering over the guy on the ground has an advantage because he can act first.
And no, you don't have to know every move to get to top ~5%. You need to generally know the threat range of each character and play just outside of it. But what is the most important piece of advice I could give a newcomer is that they HAVE to learn how to anti-air someone that spams jumps. You can't really begin to learn how to play until you've learned how to punish these players for only initiating with a jump. Fighting games require more preparation before they really start opening up, which is another huge reason why I think people think they're harder than they really are.
After learning that, I would tell them they need to learn a decent combo that leads into their super so they can cash in after they've blocked something big/punishable. Also, learning combos is the least time-consuming aspect of learning fighting games. Anyone could learn a decent combo with consistent practice over a week, but the challenge is learning how to fight.
edit: one more thing. fighting games are fast, but it's not like people are reacting to everything. what happens is that people are spamming block, and then they block something, then they think to themselves, 'what did I just block? what should I do about it?', and then they act or they continue blocking

I'll enlighten you on some theory real quick because I'll take any chance I get to talk fgs.
A good offense, and defense, to an extent, is about representing so many options over the course of a set, that the opponent's brain gets completely overwhelmed. The game is designed to overload what we call the "mental stack".
When you use multi-layered and varied patterns of offense, the opponent becomes dumbstruck when trying to predict what you'll do next. They'll eventually revert to their base instincts, running on auto-pilot completely, and that's when they're the most vulnerable to getting read over and over. That's how you get the sickest, mind-reading clips that make even the best players look dumb. They're shook.

Why? I literally have to check Facebook or set yearly reminders for my brothers and sisters birthdays. If you're not 16 birthdays don't matter. Most people over 25 that aren't desperately trying to hang on to the party scene or desperately find a reason to post content don't celebrate birthdays. It's special when you're 5 and your mom buys you cake and toys. A adult celebrating birthdays is kind of pathetic.
