I wish they still made games like this with the dark themes and without conveluted storylines. I love that these early games left so much to the imagination. Hexen 2 was also a really good game, the story was apocalyptic giving you bits and pieces but letting your imagination run
"Tombs beneath the sands to the east"? Lazarus of all people should have known that Kurast was a jungle, not a desert. Or was it a desert before Mephisto was freed?
Take heed and bear witness to the truths that lies herein, for they are the last legacy of the horadrim.. There is a war that rages on, even now, beyond the fields that we know, between the utopian kingdoms of the high heavens, and the chaotic pits of the burning hells.. This war is known as the great conflict, and it has raged and burned longer than any of the starts in the sky... Angels, and demons, walks amongst humanity, in disguise, fighting in secret, away from the prying eyes of mortals, and neither sides ever gains sway for long, as the forces of light and darkness, constantly vie for control over all creation.
@Durandal999 Maybe you're right - I guess we should ask the makers to end this conflict! :D Hero voices are: Paul Eiding - Warrior/Pepin the healer/Lazarus/Narrator (also Narrator in D2) Glynnis Talken - Rogue/Gillian the Barmaid/Kashya in D2 Michael Gough - Sorcerer/Deckard Cain the storyteller (also D2) Yes, their voice is the same but I'd say it only means that Paul Eiding speaks as Lazarus at the end like "...You're too late to save the child, now you'll join him in Hell!" :D
@mgerry1992 I understand that, but even as you read the books as player (not the character), you clarely note a diference int he tone of each character when you read, meaning is the voice of the character reading the book for you, but in lazarus' ones (those that start with a glorification to Diablo, something like "hail an sacrifices to diablo") you clrarely hear a diferent voice, so I understand its Lazarus reading the book to the player.
These were NOT all of the books in Diablo 1! There are 3 types of books on each occurrence of them on level 4, 8 and 12. Level 4: The Dark Exile, The Great Conflict, The Realms Beyond *** Level 8: The Sin War, The Wages of Sin Are War, Tale of the Three *** Level 12: The Binding of the Three, The Tale of the Horadrim, The Black King *** Quest books: Book of Blood (lvl 5), Mythical Book (lvl 6), Book of the Blind (lvl 7), Book of Steel (lvl 13)
I've been playing through MGS series for the first time recenty and every time the Colonel speaks I cannot for the life of me unhear Lazarus from Diablo 1.
@Durandal999 No, it's actually his diary (call it "Lazarus' journal") that you find in the catacomb levels (4, 8, 12). If not, then they're one of the tomes the game randomly generate at that level, which tell you about e.g. the Sin War, the Prime Evils, the Horadrim etc. and help the player (but not the character!) understand the whole story. I mean, there's no effect of reading these books, 'cause then you'd tell Cain what you read and thus Lazarus' treachery would be discovered too early...
One of the best ideas ever. Thank you for this pure nostalgia!

Paul Eiding is absolutely legendary
The Warrior's Voice and the Voice of Lazarus are the same voice actor by the way. Its both Paul Eiding.

god I love the voice of lazarus. I use his voice when ever I read or hear anything dark or disturbing
@Durandal999 That was not Lazarus but "Zhar the mad" at level 8. :o)
His voice is the same as Ogden's, I guess.

I've been playing through MGS series for the first time recenty and every time the Colonel speaks I cannot for the life of me unhear Lazarus from Diablo 1.
@mgerry1992 The voice reading the books is not lazarus? :O but he even talks about what Diablo told him
5:20 That's gotta be a 'Pulp Fiction' reference.
Oh it definitely is, Blizzard loves doing that.
