    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ouisa (Stockard Channing) tells her daughter Tess (Catherine Kellner) about the theory that everyone on the planet is separated by only six people.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Two socialites find their view of the world changed when a young man takes advantage of their preconceptions in this thoughtful comedy-drama. Flan and Ouisa Kittredge (Donald Sutherland and Stockard Channing) are a married couple who have built highly successful careers as art dealers catering to Manhattan's upper crust. The Kittredges are entertaining friends one evening when a young black man named Paul (Will Smith) appears at their door. Paul says that he's a close friend of their children, with whom he attended boarding school, and he's just been mugged and needs to get off the street for a moment. Flan and Ouisa invite him in, and they are immediately taken by Paul's intelligence and charm; he offers to prepare dinner, regales them with stories about his father, Sidney Poitier, and ends up spending the night at their apartment. However, the next morning Flan and Ouisa discover that they've been had; Paul is actually a con artist from the streets who has been pulling the wool over the eyes of many of their friends -- and his actions are beginning to have serious consequences. John Guare adapted the script from his own successful stage play; the supporting cast includes Ian McKellen, Mary Beth Hurt, Bruce Davison, and Heather Graham.

I thought the daughter was played by Leelee Sobieski, sure looks like her.

An actress named Catherine Kellner played the daughter. And Sobieski was only about 10 when the film came out.

Tierra del Fuego doesn't have rainforests. It's climate is subpolar . Equivalent to the climate of the Alaskan peninsula or Iceland .

The line is, “a native in a rainforest, a Tierra del Fuegan, an Eskimo…” - examples of 3 seemingly completely unrelated people potentially separated by six degrees from each other.

@@bokuphishp684 No, it isn't. She, in fact, says "A native of the rainforest in Tierra del Fuego", you can clearly hear the 'V' sound.
It would have been perfectly correct if she'd have said "a native of the forests in Tierra del Fuego". I must however say, as a resident of this island, most "natives" (we call them originary peoples) live within -Western- society, and while they have several pieces of land that are assigned to the community by law, they don't particularly "live" there, they live almost entirely in the only 3 cities and 2 settlements there are on this island, that is (in order of population) Río Grande, Ushuaia, Tolhuin, Porvenir and Puerto Almanza.

@@justforpolyglots Mmm, I don’t think so. I was right the first time. I’ve studied this play thoroughly and the only thing I may have gotten wrong is my use of commas to separate Ouisa’s examples of different people. John Gaure used periods. The correct line is, “It’s not just big names. It’s anyone. A native in a rainforest. A Tierra del Fuegan. An eskimo. I am bound to everyone on this planet by a trail of six people. It’s a profound thought.”
The first example of completely unrelated people she gives is, “The President of the United States. A gondolier in Venice. Fill in the names.”
The second set of examples she states are perhaps people that are geographically equidistant from each other. You may hear the line “native in a rainforest” and think Amazonian jungle which is on the same continent as Tierra del Fuego but a native in a rainforest can be from Borneo or Papa New Guinea. Eskimos in the arctic circle. And Tierra del Fuegans probably inhabit the southern most habitable area on the planet before Antarctica. If you think of about it in those terms, the examples she gives are of people equidistantly separated by degrees of latitude.
If you don’t believe me, the line is on page 45 of John Gaure’s play “Six Degrees of Separation.” The movie’s screenplay was also adapted by the playwright so its practically word for word with the play itself.

@@bokuphishp684 I can assure you Tierra del Fuegan does not exist. Residents and originary peoples here are called "Fuegian".
I looked up the script and it says what you wrote. But she clearly says "of". Even her lips move that way. She does say "Fuegan", though.
Either the term is wrong, or the places are wrong.
She also says "I'm bound... You're bound[...]" which is clearly not scripted. My guess is they fixed it afterwards to prevent exactly this.

@@justforpolyglots I think you are missing the point of the dialogue between mother and daughter entirely. Instead of arguing a moot point about proper labels, why don’t you try to comprehend the significance of the infinite connections between seemingly random people in this world. That’s the point she was trying to make. It IS a profound thought.
Have you heard of “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon?” It was a popular trivia game back in the day where one has to find the connection between a random actor and Kevin Bacon in six films/projects or less. And it always seemed to work. Even with actors from different countries one would somehow be able to make a connection back to Kevin Bacon. This game was popularized by the concept of six degrees of separation. The play initially and ultimately the movie as well.
If all you care about is to correctly identify residents of your region, take it up with the author instead and demand that he amend that line in his play (published 33 years ago) and also demand MGM to display a disclaimer with the correct label every time the movie is played on tv, or better yet, have them just dub over Sotckard Channing’s voice with the correct line. She’s pushing 80 now but I’m sure you can get her to dub over her own line for authenticity’s sake.
