As a former gymnast and current coach, the one reason I wanted to coach was to make sure no child goes through what I went through. Yes coaching includes pushing your athletes to be the best they can be but it also more importantly includes support and FUN. Sports are supposed to be FUN!!!

As my Mother used to say “think before you speak, and then before you say it, think about it again. Because once something is spoken you can’t ever take it back.” Unfortunately, with just a few poorly chosen words she probably cost herself ANY chance of being a gymnastics network commentator or doing anything with/for USA Gymnastics. She literally endorsed the Karolyi’s abusive training techniques and said they produced better athletes than the ones now being implemented by USA Gymnastics and SafeSport. I honestly don’t think there is any way she can come back from this.

I watched Makayla’s RUclips channel when she committed to her “comeback” for the Tokyo Olympics. At the time, she said that if Marta was still in charge she wouldn’t have come back to Elite. In her words “just the thought of camp gave her really bad anxiety” and she was relieved and ecstatic when she returned to her first camp and the culture was different. So I don’t understand how now she thinks the Marta era was better. To me she comes off as very privileged and unaware. For example, when she didn’t make the Rio team and reposted a tweet with her face over Gabby’s (even though Madison Kocian was the lowest scoring all-arounder selected. Her not remembering Suni, flippantly mispronouncing Hezley’s name…it all comes off as racial micro-aggressive and at her big age and experience, she should know better. She may not know better. But if she doesn’t, at this point, it’s because she doesn’t want to know better. And in her economically privileged, majority white Mormon world in Utah, she can continue to navigate thru life without learning why her thought processes and comments are super offensive. Her half-apologies and instantly turning into victim mode is so tiring and she is giving Karen vibes. Seriously. If she does not make the effort to learn and change I am sure we will see her continue with this same pattern and she will eventually be a full blown Karen!! In a few years we will be having this same conversation about her but it will probably a comment or behavior that will be even worse and we will all be shocked and saying I cannot believe she said that! At some point, we will have to believe her when she shows us who she really is. I have been a fan of hers because I felt like she was an underdog, but I really don’t think I am a fan anymore…..

I’m from Utah and I promise that McKayla’s offensive comments, lack of awareness and empathy, aren’t acceptable in any way here. Nor does she represent Mormons, because the unkind, insensitive, and prideful comments are the exact opposite of Christ-like, and Jesus Christ is who Mormons worship (the name is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). She's like kryptonite to any media outlet that would have even previously considered employing her as a serious gymnastics commentator (such as ESPN, NBC, etc.) I believe that counts for any possible judging in the future in which she could have been involved. I would never let her be a judge because she's not fair & impartial. She, through her own words, demonstrates that she comes to the table with the assumption that other athletes (other than her) don't work as hard. I think she drank the Kool-aid a little too well. It is true that training and gymnastics has changed since the Karolyi era - but as they should. There is no space in the sport for bullying, abuse, and fear-based training. I trained during the 80s in Europe and so I know first hand what that training looked like. My daughter is now a gymnast and there have been times when I've caught myself thinking how "soft" the training is now... but, then I remember that I am the product of a generation and a system that was inherently broken. MyKayla needs to stop talking and listen and reflect. I don't think she's taken the time to truly ingest and digest what happened to her teammates at the hands of the Karolyis and Nassar - if she had, she would not come out with comments such as these. Maybe her experience was not the same as her fellow gymnasts. Maybe she thrived on a stricter environment and maybe she has locked all that crap away. It's true that often times those who have suffered go on to cause suffering themselves because they spend so much time convincing themselves that what happened *couldn't* be wrong, so then end up inflicting the same damage. I also wonder how much her privileged, insulated, homogeneous, White, Mormon upbringing in Utah has affected her outlook on life. Mormonism is not known for its inclusivity and diversity....

She scares me, to be honest lol. The mean girl vibes just radiate off of her, and when I saw Skinner, she's the only other person who made me feel like that as immediate as it did. First off, great breakdown and staying productive about what the conversation should be about is a breath of fresh air!
That being said, I listened to the video before she took it down and something I have found interesting is that everyone is stuck on the comments about work ethic. Which is silly because you don’t get to be an athlete of that level without a good work ethic, so that’s just nonsensical.
The part she said that shocked me was about how she should have made a comeback because she probably would have made this team…which she only was able to say after 3 major injuries occurred from 3 top contenders…so unfortunately it’s even worse than her just saying folks don’t have a work ethic because the video was actually a pat on her own back to say she would be better suited for the team than the current girls.
An unfortunate display of insecurity and envy and to play off of Simone’s response, someone who loves her should take her microphone away until she is able to say nice things about other people without complimenting herself in the process.
Motherload of irony is she got a degree in communications (I would request a refund on that) and during her watch party she said she should go for a commentator gig 😂 she missed the day about the importance of communication not being what you say, but how it’s interpreted and makes people feel!

She said “I wasn’t ALWAYS NECESSARILY talking about the Olympic team.” So, that means she sometimes might be talking about them, right? She did not apologize for anything she said, didn’t acknowledge any mistakes, only victimized herself and blamed people for misunderstanding her.

I adore your ability to empathize and acknowledge that she likely has trauma (or at the very least a really hard time) while also definitely not letting her off the hook.
Also, to imply that Suni’s work ethic is poor when she’s literally in remission from chronic kidney disease? That Jordan lacked it when she had to perform at the olympics right before her mom went to jail? Hezly also being in literal high school?!? If Mykayla wants to see poor work ethic, she should see me right now at work not working but commenting on a youtube video 😂
But it is so exciting to see the gymnasts now older and still incredible, and all of those positive changes you noted. I could see Mykayla trying to believe that she had to go through all of that to get to where she got, but that’s a really scary mentality, especially as a mom. Nobody needs to be tortured (mentally or physically), especially for gymnastics! And it’s messed up that it was so normalized and went on for so long.

What she regrets is that she didn't live the experience. Firstly she was not a part of team USA because it was a 4 gymnasts team, while now it is 5. If the rules were the same, she would have been a part of team US in 2021 too, instead of being a "specialist". And secondly with all that COVID, she missed the enjoyment of the Olympic village and all the fun there, something that she also missed in 2016 since she was an alternative and was sent home before the Olympics started.

Let’s not forget she actually got incredibly lucky twice, with Simone having to withdraw from the event finals. However proportional responses to her are not bullying. Holding her accountable is not harassing. Holding the mirror up to her face is appropriate. Asking her to reflect and pointing out her problematic statements are appropriate. Choosing to unfollow her and setting personal boundaries are appropriate. I can imagine that she sat there with the baby watching all the undoubtedly hard-working elite athletes either get injured (many of the top contenders) or get selected even with falls she must have felt like she could have done it better if... well, too many ifs, that ship had sailed a while ago. Such a well done response! The first 10 of so minutes are the thoughts that have swirled in my head about MyKayla. She has always come across as not having much depth behind anything she says. Maybe her intelligence is fine but she is completely unaware. Someone in her life should have sat her down by now and explained though. Unfortunately I have hurt people's feelings with comments that I didn't think much of because I critique myself just as hard as I critique other people (counselor told me that was something to watch out for). Sometimes my comments aren't a problem because of harshness, but because they are self-centered. I have always been socially awkward so finding ways to take part in conversations has frequently resulted in me inserting myself into discussions that don't need me. When friends pointed it out, i was utterly embarrassed. I explained to them why, and they gave me advice how better to be present in social situations without making it about me. Anyway, I don't know whether MyKayla finished her degree, but she was studying broadcast journalism. You would think that would involve maybe not media training per se, but the issues involved in carrying yourself on camera? I have always had the feeling she wanted a commentator career in retirement, and is desperately grasping for it by setting up her youtube channel. I don't know if she has tarnished any reputation she has beyond repair, but she needs ALOT of help to try to fix things and probably should stay quiet and focus on her family for the next phase of her life. Sorry this was so long, but you are the first response that resonated so much with my same thoughts. I also appreciate your perspective from the elite gymnastics world and how you are clear than intense training is not the same thing as aggressive or abusive training. No gymnast is going to make it to Olympic trials without having been intense in her training.

She may as well be named McWailer because all she's been doing since she was named alternate in 16 has been whine and complain about not being chosen by the Karolys, and now her green gymnastics Grinch is showing that jealousy. And then to not be picked again and again, shew. Green green green. She used to complain and be so scared of the camps, and now that everyone is going into gymnastics by not bullying and being supportive (like teams in the NCAA, so she should be used to that?) she says the old way is better? Say what? Even her difficulty isnt as high as more than half the team, so what even is her issue lol.
Being jealous is a nasty thing, but saying things out loud is even more dirty because theres always a record somewhere. Theres a reason she wasnt picked, not just by the Karolys. But the new teams too. Maybe think on that a bit, hm Skinner? Just because you say you want it, doesnt mean you'll get it. We all know that. Working hard and giving it everything is good obviously, but you aren't the only one who didn't make it? Being a sore loser is not good for broadcasting either lol.
I did pointe ballet for years, and blew my knee out twice and had to work extra hard in half the amount of time to get back on the floor with a torn meniscus in two different places, two different times, and yeah I was upset when I didnt get a part I wanted. But I also knew when the other girl was picked that she deserved it more because she was going crazy hard and had massive skill and wasnt hindered by an injury.
Sometimes, we dont get what we want and theres a lesson in everything. Especially losing. How she's handling it however, is showing the maturity she needs. That glamour show they did on youtube about gymnastics and her trying to get back on the team for 2020, she gave a sob story about being alternate and how she wanted to be there for her team and rooted and cheered for them and felt like she was what held the group together, I thought it was sweet that she brought some of that NCAA attitude about teams to elite. But I could tell she felt like she was backhanded by USAG and didnt deserve to be an alternate. Its an ego burster, for sure.

When Mykayla said “the talent isn’t what it use to be” she meant to say that the code of points is allowing for routines to have less difficult skills with higher value. During the Marta era it was expected that you had an Amanar and all these other very difficult skills. Nowadays, Suni’s beam dismount is allowed in elite gymnastics. Years ago that wasn’t even considered a level 9 dismount. She didn’t mean “these girls are not talented like they were during my day” she meant that their routines are watered down versions of their talent. We only see 2 girls now with amanars and 4 girls with chengs (correct me on that) just about everyone on the 2012 team had an amanar. I believe these girls are capable of more skills.
Mykayla isn’t smart enough to articulate words to an audience in a professional fashion. Like you said, she’s known to have done things that piss people off. She’s entitled to her own opinion and I do think it’s ridiculous statement but at the same time I do think it’s ridiculous to get dog piled over an opinion that harmed no one.Mykayla isn’t valid in the gymnastics world that much. She’s a trouble maker with a loud mouth and a silver medal. No one cares or remembers her all that much except when she stirs controversy which she’s more notable for vs her own gymnastics.

What she said about the current team was that she could have make it with all the injuries that happened at trials and that they weren’t as many injuries during trials in the Marta’s era, meaning some gymnasts that are on the team wouldn’t have make it in the Marta’s era with what they did at trials.
She said the work ethic during Marta’s era was better but she also said several times that they were a lot of bad that came from it but that maybe it’s too lax now.
During all of it she said except Simone, Simone is incredible.
It was bad because even insinuating that it was better when people were getting abused is unacceptable.
Everything else was not that bad. I understand other gymnasts being mad at her but other people are making it into something bigger than it is. Okay that stuff isn't even true. There were absolutely injuries during Marta's era, the gymnasts were just made it to work through them, sometimes being broken physically and/or mentally to the point of having to retire from elite. McKayla Maroney had a broken toe she had to lie about. Dominique Moceanu had a fractured tibia as I recall. Ohashi could have been treated properly and still be competing. Second of all we know the code for coaches 'pushing gymnasts.' It requires toxic training methods. They called them lazy even when they were busting their butts back in Marta's day. It's a dogwhistle by Skinner to act like gymnasts are lazier now when the same accusations were hurled before, the difference was more of the gymnasts were wyt.

I have always been bugged by the way she talks that it's like she's asking a question with every statement she says. That may be just the inflection of how she talks but it always comes across to me as she's not what she's saying. In that same interview though she shared the negatives about the old camp they had and how much they hated/feared going. She also brought up the lower work ethic that the gymnasts now have in her gym but also at camp since the change in leadership. In some ways it gave a different perspective but she still kept making statements that were oblivious and sometimes wrong. She mentioned that bar routines in the elite world have 15 skills in them to show how much harder they are than college routines. I know that college routines don't have nearly as many skills as elite routines but I don't think elite routines have 15. She was also adamant that every time she didn't make a team it was political.

    ACCOUNTABILITY is the word.
There's a lot to unpack with her. In my professional opinion there are deficits. I look at her, then I look at Sam and Laurie. There's a difference. I believe that she's been given a lot of grace but very little chastening for error which has made her extremely resistant to correction.
Love and light to her, but indeed accountability is how we grow. She's not the only person in media who does this. But if she wants to be successful, she needs coaching. Stop listening to the coven of witches and warlocks stroking her ego and telling her she did nothing wrong.
There's so much talent in this quad. How can anyone form their lips to say the talent and work ethic isn't there when these gymnasts are pushing through injury. People who sign on to agree that the "era" was different, needs to follow up with how abusive it was and what it produced besides medals.
We need to understand that these athletes are not robots. You don't need to berate youngsters to train them to perform at their best. Their careers in the sport is for a short while. All of that abusive language and action leaves them depleted of any value or worth when their career ends.
I appreciate what SafeSport has brought to gymnastics. It's going to take time to make the changes in the culture to be second nature, but I like the direction it is positioned to be.

She also said that she's could've made the team if she had trained for it with how sloppy the ladies who made the team were at trials. And she did make exception for Simone.

Braie give Skinner the same energy she gave. It's fair. There's really no excuse for her vile comments. I believe, she studied journalism and apparently she did poorly on that too. She's all about herself ... OMG there's a magazine featuring her because of her 1 silver Olympic medal. i suppose that gives her more energy for her delusional grandiose personality.

Probably if she were just an ordinary person, it would not matter. However, she should know that she is not only a former Olympian but also a former USA gymnast, and her statements might be picked up by people and media persons. There's a conflict of interest, so she should choose her words wisely. I would understand if she was on a radio or television show commenting on athletes or issues because she is paid to do that, but this is just her opinion on social media, which is more accessible to the youth nowadays.

  • @Appaddict01

I think she conflated work ethic with ability to hit under pressure. The team went over a decade without a fall in major international competitions. They have fallen in every major competition sometimes multiple times since the end of the Marta era. The Russian team outscored the team even in prelims with Simone in 2021. They’d be serious competition if they were allowed to compete in 2024. BTW...Marta was an abuser and deserved to be removed obviously.

100%. And I don’t think it’s necessary to tell people watch what you say in case you have fed someone because honestly, people find a fence and almost everything. But I think it’s still fair to ask people to communicate the best they can and in the most constructive and respectful way possible.
