Building an Open-Air Workshop

- Check out our new outdoor workshop! We used the Toja Grid Modular pergola system to build an open-air workshop for our rental house in Joshua Tree. The covered workshop was made by inserting standard 10-foot long 4x4s that we got from Home Depot into the Toja Grid steel brackets. The result is a structure that is 10' by 20' by 10'.

The directions recommended three people to put it up, but meh figured I could do it by myself. LOL, love it, this is what I would try to do as well.

For those worried about rain and damp, this is in the Mojave desert. If there is rain in the forecast they can take the tools inside or just throw a tarp over them.

Open-air workshop sounds great! But I’d definitely lock up my own tools in a bolted down tool cabinet with the neighbors that I have.

Live in an area where a half dozen times a year the winds blow steady at 50mph with gusts of 70mph for 3 days straight. Most of those times it's raining sideways. Wonder if you think this Toja system would stand up to that kind of beating. Of course I wouldn't leave my tools uncovered, but I'm concerned about the structure.
That would be great here in Minnesota about now. 😬

What about the rain? How would you keep the rain out and prevent the rain from wetting your tools?

Sometimes you need help. But usually one is more efficient. If you're going to move it. Next time you put it back together, you might want to glue the wall boards together. If you ever move it after, you just have to cut a vertical line up the middle of the 4x4 support and you have a few panels instead of a multitude of boards to puzzle back together! Very nice build BTW!

Dude, you barely averted personal injury there.
Options:
1-Raise a “bent” or one arch shape brace with 45 of 2x4, the the other and connect them horizontally.
2- screw base to 2x4s or plywood 4’x4’ base for each post , temp screw to deck, attach beams one at a time.
3- Nail on drag legs and diagonal brace so as you raise, it braces itself.
4- consult a a good framer. Would have given you half dozen safer quicker ways to do this.
You kinda got this idea towards the end of it.
I’ve built a lot solo and that could have gone wrong in a heartbeat.
How is it holding up? Any damage on the sail shade? Wind damage? Thanks!
My nephew would use that as his Beer Pergola.

Do you happen to recall the welds on the inside of your Trio brackets causing you trouble getting the wood in? Mine are large and basically prevent the wood from sliding in as advertised. Was that a rubber mallet you used to hammer them in?
we can pergola with poles of 9cmx9cm???

Those Toja Grid components are expensive as hell. 2 corners or "Trio's for $160.00. 2 mid T's or "Quad's" $240.00.
He could save a lot of money by learning some basic construction and using carriage bolts instead.

Is the finished product actually 10' x 20' or 10' 9" x 21' 1/2" ? Isn't there a 1" screwing flange on each base (so add 1" on all four sides for them)...and then don't you have to allow for the width of the brackets that the 4x4s go in to (so add 3 1/2" x 2 = 7" for front to back AND add 3 1/2" x 3 = 10 1/2" for side to side). I love how the product looks and goes together but it won't fit a 12' deck...so I have to go with a 10" product for front to back or build a deck deeper than 12''. Isn't that so?
Awesome. This is more than a pergola or a canopy, this is coolness to the umpteenth degree. I can’t wait to see the projects that come out of this workshop. What direction is the back wall facing? Great idea.

The scaffold "bench" is commonly called a baker scaffold on jobsites here in Utah. I've also heard it called a perry scaffold.
I just hope that the materials used were mentioned on the description coz I don't what that black thing is 😅 or maybe he said it, my phone volume is just really low 🤔

Bad idea, if it rain you better hope ur tools are waterpoof. Tools rust and rot due to bad weather. electric tools might spoil

Great video! I am doing the same thing for my backyard with no privacy. Any idea what is the wind resistant on the structure? I am planning to do the same setup with yours but I am adding in 2 more sets of lumbers and toja grid brackets.
question, is this system strong enough if I cover the walls with plywood or would a strong wind knock it over? we are in a pretty windy area...

+HomeMadeModern how strong is it? I assume that yours is pretty strong because you added the siding so there is lot of strength added there... however, how was the racking/strength before you started to attach those side boards?
First time framing? That's not how we do it. Stand up the four posts using temporary braces, level, plumb and square. Then use your go-cart to assemble the top pieces, one at a time. Consolidate the braces until the whole thing is geometrically perfect then lock it that way.
Man , I think I would get a friend , neighbor or pay someone just to help me hold a few pieces of wood together for safety purposes. I put the toja hammock and pergola together and 2 people is perfect. Also beware , this kit from Canada is expensive and you have to buy the wood
would it not be better to build a roof instead of just shades ? it's a workshop and I can imagine how problematic it would be if you are in the middle of something and it starts raining...

Great ideas to build something by yourself but I do wish that Americans would learn to speak English. It's "From us or off us " and not, "Off of us." It's just plain "..to keep the sun off us."

First part is kinda half-assed, dude, just ask for help. That was unnecessarily unsafe and being a content producer for the DIY community, you shouldn't be teaching people to solo a three-man job.
can you explain exactly how three people would make it safer? I appreciate the concern and I might be missing something but the ratings on the scaffolding and the wood supports are well above the weight of the structure.
