Great video! One nice thing about hunting buff at sunset is that they don't like to run off far--even after being shot. I once shot one at sunset and he ran around in a circle to exactly the same place. The 2nd shot was right next to the first. If you haven't tried the camo umbrella trick, give it a try. Holding the umbrella out front while you try and hunker down behind it and advance to the buff. Breaks up the outline. I'll be hunting with Adam (last safari of the season) and maybe the umbrella will come in handy for the "short rains". Oh well... ;)
What I like the most about the .500 and .577 Nitro Express calibers is that you can use military projectiles from the .50 BMG and the 14.5x114mm in their cartridge cases, the Armor Piercing rounds would have great effectiveness against Dangerous Game.
Hey Alain, Where the heck ya' been? Some people were getting worried ya' been away so long. But not me, I'm a tough guy too, (ahem, ahem...?). Dem' dagga boys still my favorite. I just learned about scrum caps? (I think that's what they're called?) Did you ever get one?
Hope you see this late comment. Which 577 NE do you have? . You say it originally was a black powder Express and you are using a 650 grain bullet implies you may be using the 2-3/4" version. I hope anyway. I have one in 2 3/4" and i am looking for load data. Suggestions
Well now that's just not fair, a great buffalo walks right out into the open not 5 feet from the road. I swear some people just have all the luck. Great hunt by the way Mr. Smith, love watching your buffalo hunting vidoes.
Off sticks at that distance with the .577? I don't get it. If he was aiming for a high shoulder shot(aka a John Taylor favorite on buff) that was terrible. Sorry not a sycophant for bad shooting regardless of the hunter.
@@JohnSwampthingRae Thats why I only use a 22 Magnum with solids, on a custom Martini single shot HA HA for everything ! shot placement is ''Everything ''
Your Alex Henry .577 is a beautiful and priceless work of art. It has a surprisingly short barrel for such a large caliber rifle. I guess it is a converted shotgun though. I’ll bet it feels like getting punched in the shoulder by Mike Tyson every time you fire it too. Glad to see you enjoying retirement and doing what you love most. Hope you, Monty and Norm are all well.
Song & Music; happy go lucky guy IT IS…😅Now let .577 do some bellowing bud. You are a great guy ! Strumming of guitar later at the fire 🔥 hole & Bud Weiser too
Hello Alain! Your double horizontal rifle, an Alex Henry, is both classic & most beautiful! But why 4 shots at close range to put down this buff with your .577? What bullet, make & type, is in your/these hunting cartridge's? Also, all fresh-water fish from muddy water ponds or in mud, after fileting should/must soak in fresh water for at least 6 hours to cleanse their muddy taste! Andrew, still in Lviv, west Ukraine
So im looking more and more in to a buffalo hunt my self. I am curious do the shooter ever get a small piece of meat? I hear mostly it gets divided by the local population
A superb rifle! And I noticed that using the light bullets really reduces the recoil on this, that first shot was way high, you were lucky to recover this one. Stay safe!
Greetings. I waited on your video so I could enjoy it with my morning coffee. I have a question . . . For a very long time, you used a Winchester M70 in the venerable 375 Holland. Now, you've been using a Gunwerks 375 Ruger. What are your feelings between these rifles and cartridges ?
Short version is; I was in love with the 375 HH but since using the Gunwerks Skull in 375 Ruger I have found it to be a real pounder on Buff and elephant. It's a super accurate round with no more recoil than the HH so I have been using it for several years as my light gun on antelope etc. as well.
alexander henry edinburge ? EDINBURGH ! did you get that engraving done by someone in the states ? great vids keep up the good work ! when are you coming back to UK to hunt deer again with kevin ?
@@JAlainSmith yes but the maker is " Scotish " not belgium ! just need to re engrave last end letter ! so all correct spelling ? dealers will spot that IF you want to sell later !
Number first!! Great history on the 577 - the Scotts made very good weapons and those in the know would value a Scottish shotgun above some of the British legends. One wonders why, when a well placed 30-06 (Roosevelt’s African Safari) will bring down an elephant, they pursued the nitro cartridges and the bigger skeleton shakers, the “mamers” as you call them. My .375 and .458 are a big enough “belt” for me. Thanks for the content.
The 577 was meant as a "stopping rifle", an ideal weapon for following dangerous game into thick bush, where one may have to shoot at a charging beast at very short range with less than ideal shot placement. If one read the writings of professional ivory hunters in the early 20th century, say James Sutherland and J.A. Hunter, their .577 were generally carried by a tracker and only handed to the hunter when going into the thick stuff. For picked shots in open ground they would use a light rifle that they carried themselves, say a .318 Westley Richards or 6.5x54mm Mannlicher. Roosevelt might have used a .30-06, but his professional hunter was known to have wielded a pair Holland & Holland. 500/450 rifle.
Why have a double rifle if you are only going to shoot one barrel and let the buff run off. Isn't that the whole idea of a double rifle. Two quick shots?
First shot (16.52 )on the buffalo looks like middle of the body about 15 inches from the top. Thats why it starts running. Lucky it went all the way back. It could have been a long sad tracking. But thats hunting, nobodys perfect.
I have not fished with a spinning rod in more than 60 years. I picked up a fly rod early in my life and have yet to put it down at 68. As for your .577 N.E., it's a nice and well-loved, and care-for rifle. I personally would not mind the blemishes, it's been carried shot, and hunted with. Not a safe queen. My guess ammo is an issue these days.
First shot to high and far back. Shouldn’t really take that much lead especially that caliber. PS I’m a PH so not just saying it, I’m talking from experience
It's deceptive on camera as the shot was actually pretty good behind the shoulder. He ran in that circle and then fell down. The other shots were insurance at the end of the day as I am not much for chasing them in the dark.
Afraid not! Look at 20:35… You either shot high, or the bullet him him very high and bullet went straight through him, and he sure didn’t look hurt in the spine when he ran away…

I like how the buffalo sometimes gets spooked and run off but then sometimes charges at people. The dual trait blows my mind
It's what we've been waiting for Alain, all about Sir Alex! Interesting history!
Love it! Another great video sir.

Nice hunt man, can't wait to do it my self on day with my dad, I'm only 12😂
Hey Al, is your Skull .375 Ruger a short or long action?? As you know the .375 H&H is a long action. I had this caliber in the M70 Winchester.
375 Ruger and its long action
That 577 is hand-held field artillery and a beautiful piece of work! Great video!
That .577 Nitro Express is a beauty, a lot of character. Nice job your hunting videos are the best. 🤣

Side by side, no muzzle brake, straight stock

Because your double started life as a black powder gun was that why it was regulated with 650gr not 750gr bullets for a lighter load?
Not positive but I assume its because it's a 2 3/4 inch also.
Thanks for talking about the rifle you are using. I find that very interesting.
