  • This is a review of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov in a minute. The Master and Margarita inspired Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses. I hope Mr Rushdie survives that heinous attack yesterday. I am still away, but I was missing putting out content, so I thought I'd try a series of one minute reviews using my phone to record.
    1 Minute Book Review #2
My second one minute review and the third to accrue over 1000 views.
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov is the only Penguin Classic I own. This translation is by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.

One of the best books ever. Really. It just requires efforts of intellegence .

I think I read this about 10 years ago but I have no memory of it...I think I was extremely confused. :)

I was confused, too. Some people really love this but it didn't really work for me.

The meaning of the book is that you can not interpet the New Testament like you want, without geting into a sin. The book, which "Master" have written, distorts the immage of Jesus. That attracts Satan into "Master" 's life. Satan celebrates a small victory in Moscow. Therefore at the end of the novel, "Master" died and can not be accepted by heavens. Bulgakov was son of the priest and consealed religiuos philosophy in his book. By the way it is about present times, when people in churches are too far from the original cannons.

Nice review- sounds a bit crazy! I think this is on my radar of classics but don’t think I own it yet.

It might work for you, it didn't for me. It has an interesting publication history, being published 25 years after the author's death to great acclaim.

@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff I haven’t, to be honest I hadn’t heard of it before even though it’s a classic. I will likely avoid it now ☺️

I agree with your assessment. I liked Bulgakov's short stories, but this book was a disappointment.

I know many who loved this book but it didn't work for me, there were some great scenes but I found the plot too convoluted and had trouble remembering who was who.

It is best book. You just have not understood. It is difficult if you do not know much about USSR society at that time.
