jim's books reading & stuff
Грузия
Добавлен 1 июн 2006
Hello, I'm Jim, an Englishman living in Georgia (საქართველო) , the country not the state. Since 20 September 2020, this channel is primarily for longform videos related to books: reviews, hauls, TBRs, readathons etc...
My main longform content will be talking about books & reading & stuff and engaging with the Booktube community.
I have loved reading from an early age, this channel relates to my love of reading and bookish stuff.
Usually I put Booktube videos out on Sundays and Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 8pm Tbilisi time, 5pm UK time, noon Eastern, 9am Pacific. I post one minute reviews of the books I read.
With shorts I am experimenting with different random subjects like urban fishing, the Tbilisi metro, random books from the shelf, 360 degree views of Tbilisi. Shorts might be posted any time.
Follow me on Goodreads, Twitter, Instagram etc... (links below)
I always answer questions and comments.

1 Min Review: Black Leopard Red Wolf by Marlon James
I’ve never heard of this book before but interesting concept!
I really liked this one, too!
It was a five star read for me....great book now I want to read Dark Matter.
It’s a good book for sure. Will definitely reread it in the near future. Good review Jim!
Thanks Kevin, I really enjoyed it.
Interesting! I can't tell if i like numerical ratings or not. Do you enjoy reading books with stars? I might like the idea of ratings with tags such as "beautiful prose", "mesmerizing characters", "formulaic". Maybe that would be too many spoilers though.
What were those four one-star? (Oooh maybe topic for a video. 😂)
Yes please! Do tell!
You could check my Goodreads. One of them was Lord of the Flies, which many people rate highly but I just hated the book. I did have five one star reads, but I reread The Catcher in the Rye, which I hated as a teen and in my 50s I understood the central character Holden Caulfield better, he was acting as he did because of unprocessed grief over the death of his brother to leukemia not because he was an a**hole, and I bumped the rating up to 4 stars.
I've put the list on my community page, it maybe a topic for a future video, although I am not sure who would want to watch such a video.
It's interesting to hear how people determine their ratings. I do consider other people's ratings even though I don't rate them myself!
My ratings are subjective, related to how much I enjoy the read. A novel like Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, I can see is beautifully written but it won't be a five star book for me because I don't care too much for the plot.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff Fair enough!
Such an interesting topic. Rating is such a personal thing I agree and it’s definitely each to their own. I do think it’s good to look at ratings and think about it more. I definitely feel like going forward I want to utilise 1 stars more as I haven’t really being doing that much. Great video Jim😊
I look to see the range of ratings if a lot of people have rated a book 4 or 5 it might be worth checking out. I have hardly any one or two stars as I usually DNF such books and don't rate them.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff yeah I don’t rate books I haven’t read either so I get that ☺️
This was a great rundown of ratings and why you rate books the way you do. I also will not rate a book if I DNF it, it's just not fair. Good video, Jim! Cheers!
Thanks Bob. I see some people on goodreads give a book a low rating and said they bailed after the first chapter or two, as you say it doesn't seem fair.
Wow! That's awesome Jim, that you only have two more Dicken's books to read. What a wonderful accomplishment.
Thanks, they can be a little daunting because of their size, they usually take me a couple of months to read,
That's interesting to hear that Dickens has a novel with American settings. I never knew that. I will have to look into that. Nice video. -James
Charles Dickens visited the United States twice, on his second trip he apologized to some audiences for Martin Chuzzlewit because it didn't show America in a positive light.
Disney's The Sword In The Stone. Classic childhood memory!
I have fond memories of certain Disney movies I watched as a child like The Jungle Book.
Really enjoying your book shelf tour as much for all the niknaks as for the books 😊
I do have a lot of "stuff" on the shelves hence the name of the channel... books, reading and stuff!
Love your library!
Thanks for dropping by and commenting sk...sk...sk...Scully :)
I like the black classic collections you have. The one above your head. I was going to participate in a Proust readalong, but I just haven't had the time. Plus, I don't have the book(s). Have you read Stalin by Kotkin? Prometheus has read volumes 1 & 2. We've been waiting for vol. 3 since 2020. You knickknack the London Eye and Big Ben is pretty cool.
@@BookZealots I haven't read Stakin by Kotkin. I have read the two biographies by Simon Sebag Montefiore. And the one by Martin Amis. My favorite is the one I held up Young Stalin, which follows his story until he became Soviet leader, showing some of what made him the tyrant he became: a brutal childhood, the Tbilisi seminary, the tragic death of his first wife etc...
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff Prometheus has told me the story of Stalin and his ruffian/gangster lifestyle and his childhoold accident, etc. And then as typical for tyrannical leaders they become paranoid and that never leads to anything good. I'll check to see if my son has the one you like. If not, it'll be a future surprise. =) Thank you for sharing.
@@BookZealots A lot of tyrannical leaders suffered childhood abuse, like Stalin and Hitler.
😂
@@sandrahollins3520 Thanks, Sandra
great poem Jim!
Thanks, glad you liked it.
Somebody wanted to stay in bed. 😂
Beautiful!
Thanks, Melinda :)
JIM!!!! oh my goodness THANK YOU for this kind kind review! im so honored that you chose my book to step out and try something new and that parts resonated with you. i know the romance genre isn't for everyone (as if i didn't drone on and on about that in the book!) so i'm overjoyed by this video. thank you SO much for reading!!!!
I was really impressed I had been looking for a contemporary romance to read for a while, and was considering an Emily Henry (a friend has now lent me their copy of Beach Read). I found the central characters relatable, although Aiden did seem a little like a rom-com stereotype. I liked the examination of the genre through the characters and their creative writing class. I wish you every success, when it is released in December.
Ohh, thanks ^^ My name is catalan and means Snow ^^ maybe pronunciation in english is similar to 'news' I'll do it soon, thanks for tagging me
Sorry for mispronouncing your name, it was news to me. I love the name of your channel "Sin libros no soy nada" .Thanks for commenting.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff oh no, is a nice try, i know is so difficult💚 thaanks for words, aprecciate it
Thanks for doing the tag! I had to laugh when you said that people who don't DNF are probably dealing with childhood trauma. I fear that it is funny because it's true! It took me a long time to be okay with DNF'ing because I was told (as a child) that DNF'ing makes you a "quitter."
I think a lot of novice readers get that message you have to finish a book if you started it, like you have to finish your food... It is very liberating to realize you don't have to finish a book if it isn't working for you, there are plenty of other titles just waiting to be read.
Thanks for the tag!!!
You're welcome, you said you hadn't been tagged for a while....
Thank you so much for tagging me! And look at you nailing the Irish pronunciation!
You are welcome. There was a character called 'Aoife' in The Guest List, I remember checking the pronunciation at the time. I'm glad I didn't butcher your name.
Really interesting. I am also really new to poetry but it’s something I’ve been exploring more this year because I want to learn and I have been inspired by some other booktubers. I’ll be following your poetry journey Jim 😊
@@RaynorReadsStuff I plan to read poetry every Thursday on my channel as a way for me to explore the form.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff I shall look forward to tomorrow then ☺️
@@RaynorReadsStuff Tomorrow, I expect to read one of Emily Bronte's poems, as this is Victober and I don't have an extensive collection of poetry books.
Mahler’s 2nd is fantastic. I once got to see a live performance. Yeah, this covers most of the Book Murderer Tag.
I had it on audio cassette and used it when I studied at university 40 years ago. I am no expert on classical music. The one I listen to on RUclips is Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" (Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Claudio Abbado).
I do read in the bathtub but I learned a valuable lesson. I once fell asleep while reading my first edition original Kindle and I dropped it in the bath water and ruined it. So I never read in the tub when I am sleepy and it's cold outside and the water is so nice and cozy and hot.
Oops. You could maybe listen to an audiobook if the playing device is in the opposite corner of the room to the bathtub.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff I never replaced my Kindle and if I do read in the tub I make sure that I am sitting up.!
I got a bath tray that I put my Kindle on as I am very concerned about this very issue 😂
Thank you for tagging me, this is a fun one! I think most of my answers are going to be pretty similar to yours 😂
You are welcome, don't feel under any compulsion to do the tag unless you want to...I never know who to tag.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff Tags are always fun and I like the way you decide who to tag, it's fun and gives a lot of different creators a chance.
@@bookandbujo Thanks, Debbie.
this man is very creative😊
Thanks, I enjoy making these videos.
A Stuff Haul. Very nice. I have a few hot wheels cars that I still buy when I find one that catches my eye. I had the Beatles Yellow Submarine hot wheel but I gave it to my grandson. He plays with it in the bathtub!
I also have the Beatles submarine (Hot Wheels) but it is not even out of its packaging. Corgi Toys made a Beatles Yellow Submarine in the late 1960s, I'd love to find one of those.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff I love my grandson but I wish that I had kept it. Cost me only $2.00 at that time. Man.
My favourite poet is whoever I'm currently reading, I'm quite promiscuous, so currently my favourite is Anne Sexton. I've just done a video on Heaney's alliterative verse translation of 'Beowulf', contemporary Irish poetry is booming, always a treat. And I've also just done a video on 'Five Poets to Luxuriate In (Slowly)', if you'd like an introduction to five superb contemporary Welsh/English poets. Thanks for shining this spotlight on this (too often neglected) greatest of the arts.
Thanks for the recommendations, I shall take a look at your video, I'm keen to explore the field of poetry.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff: ah, be very careful, poetry becomes a dazzling obsession!
@@apoetreadstowrite We shall see... these five poets like Jo Shapcott are the entry level drugs to the world of poetry?
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff: definitely. I think you would love all of these. Contemporary poetry is absolutely booming: experimental, probing, unsettling, reassuring…
I recently discovered the poet Ted Kooser and have enjoyed what I've read so far of his.
@@awebofstories Thanks for sharing, Melissa.
One of my favourite Canadian poets is Robert Service.
Thanks, I have your book Chronicles of the Undead on my Kindle.

I love Emily Brontë's poetry!
So do I.
I like your tag videos😁
I'm glad you like them, I have made over 30 original tag videos, but I feel they have had their day and I want to focus more on book reviews now...
Thanks for sharing this, fantastic to be reminded just how good Emily Bronte's poetry is.
I think she is generally regarded as the best poet of the Bronte sisters, she is certainly one of my favorite poets, although I am quite a novice when it comes to appreciating poetry. One of the reasons I am putting out poetry readings on a Thursday is to discover poetry and move out of my comfort zone, because I feel poetry has a lot to offer.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff: fantastic. I look forward to more wonder and joy.
Thanks for sharing the great poem.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Ooh, I liked this book a little better than you.
You did indeed, with my bookish friends here in Tbilisi, the reviews were mixed from 2 stars to 5 stars... I was entertained by the book but the Tbilisi depicted didn't mesh with my own view of the city I live in. I also felt the cruelty to animals was unnecessary. Each reader is different, which makes for interesting discussion.
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff I was wondering if the descriptions of Tbilisi would ring true with someone who lived there. The cruelty to animals and people was jarring. I think a part of my liking for the book was based on its setting in a place and among events I knew little about.
@@BookishTexan There are a lot of mixed reactions to this book, which is fine. Scott from Gunpowder Fiction and Plot wasn't impressed but others like yourself really liked it.
Not a very hopeful poem, is it? 😆
Not at all. But she was one of five sisters, none of whom reached 40 years of age.
You packed a lot in there for one minute! Great review!
@@awebofstories Thanks, Melinda. That is the challenge I give myself to condense all I want to say about a book into just one minute.
I skimmed through it and the writing seemed lively and engaging. It's definitely on my TBR list. How did you feel it depicted Georgian society? I believe Vardiashvili grew up in Britain. My impression is transplanted, middle class writers like Nino Haratishvili are targeting western audiences. As an expat did the book give you any new insights about life in Georgia?
I felt his depiction of Tbilisi dwelt more on the Soviet aspects and didn't ring true to my experience. I would describe the book as a "Curate's egg" (good in parts). I loved Nino Haratiscvili's The Eighth Life.
❤
