We have been burning fossil fuels since the mid 1800s. The government doesn't keep the money from the carbon tax. The money is collected and returned as a rebate. The carbon tax rewards those who use less energy. For example, the mass transit user pays less carbon tax and the guy who drives a big truck pays more. Both get the same rebate. That seems both fair and reasonable.
