  • Been collecting NeoGeo MVS arcade game cartridges lately and I've quickly found the desire to grab some nice boxes and artwork for them. Turns out these AES-style shock boxes from Southtown Homebrew are fantastic!

    Everything you create is so well informed, pleasing, and incredibly relaxing after a stressful day.

    Wow, holy heck, all these years, I seriously heard "Bust a move" and assumed it was somekind of dance rythm game. You've just exploded my pitifully small mind, LGR.

    • @kevinf2757
      @kevinf2757 4 года назад +23

      What makes it almost more confusing is that it is in Japan. The PSX rhythm game Bust-a-Groove is called Bust-a-Move in Japan. They couldn't call it that here cause of this one. Your mind is big. You knew this shit somehow.

    • @toshikikarukawa8148
      @toshikikarukawa8148 4 года назад +5

      @@kevinf2757 Exactly, I remember playing the japanese Bust a Move in PSX (a game I loved, actually), and when it launched in USA and Europe had to be renamed to Bust a Groove due to the original and not very wise rename of Puzzle Bobble. I remember there was a lot of confussion due to that.

    • @ar_xiv
      @ar_xiv 4 года назад +3

      For most of my life I thought “bubble bobble” was bust a move, which seems like a much better name for it, but no it’s an entirely different game. Bust a move was in fact called “puzzle bobble” at some point though adding to the confusion

    • @Bakamoichigei
      @Bakamoichigei 4 года назад +2

      Don't worry...it gets even _more_ confusing! 😏 Bust-A-Move was actually the original title of the game until very late in development when Taito decided to cram Bub, Bob, and other Bubble Bobble characters into it and change the name to Puzzle Bobble. We know this now because some years ago a collector found a prototype that was basically the finished game, minus the Bubble Bobble IP, and bearing the Bust-A-Move title...which I imagine they kept for the overseas release because they didn't think anybody remembered Bubble Bobble outside of Japan?

    • @spartonberry
      @spartonberry 4 года назад

      @@ar_xiv I'm sure there was a cheap PC release of Puzzle Bubble 4 (early/mid 2000s when you could find shelves of cheap jewel-case PC software) that kept the name. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the same US publisher that gave us Darius Gaiden PC. (I have it and remember that one having an English Windows Help file with same color text and background, with the actually "readable" text file being Japanese instructions.) :P

STILL have my top 20 carts, and my original 4 slot Japanese candy cab. Fun hobby but ADDICTIVE. Happy to help if you wanna write, thank you for the channel!

    I love my Neo Geo MVS cabinet. Getting it completed a wild childhood fantasy 🙂 Also getting MVS cartridges now while they're reasonably priced is a good idea. Consolized MVS systems are becoming more common and the AES cartridge market is ridiculous. I think demand for MVS cartridges is going to rise soon.

    • @Bakamoichigei
      @Bakamoichigei 4 года назад

      Wait, MVS cartridges are "reasonably priced"?! In 2008 they priced somewhere between "Well, why not?" and "Slippery slope" territory (and I fell down that slope, believe it) but last I looked the prices had gone up to where I couldn't justify it anymore. Luckily I've got my MVS-4-25 cab and all but a few of the games I wanted...so I don't have to worry about it. 😬

    In case you haven't gotten this in comments yet: It's Bust-a-Move in NA and Puzzle Bobble everywere else in the world and the Dance game is called Bust-a-Groove and for the longest time that did throw me off when the dance rhythm game came out on the Playstation since my local arcade had Bust-a-Move too. And I still play it today through "Bubble Witch Saga 3" one of the highest-grossing mobile games of all times. Probably a case of Mandela effect since Bust-a-Move was also on Gameboy, SNES and N64 under the same exact name.

      In the Neo Geo Station release of MS2 for PS3 and PSP they included an “Overclock 24Hz” option for the CPU to help reduce the majority of the slowdown, it’s a shame this wasn’t carried over to the ACA Neo Geo release.

  • @railsrust

    Looks fun. I actually looked into the sound chip for the NeoGeo and it's actually quite the little marvel. It's actually the main reason there's so many damn pins on the cartridges, haha. It has 4 OPN channels compatible with the Genesis and other arcade chips, 3 PSG channels that are compatible with an INSANE amount of consoles, computers and arcade machines like the ZX Spectrum and Atari ST, as well as an ADPCM sample player split into two sections. One section runs 6 channels of playback at 18.5 kHz and the other section plays on channel between 18.5-55.5 kHz. The ADPCM section is also why they needed so much capacity in the cartridges. I think it's cable to address like three or four rom chips on its own to play back samples, and that goes up with bank switching. No wonder the games cost so damn much to make back in the day.

This reminded me, somehow, about how you could watch Microsoft and game publishers cheapen their case designs with thinner, more translucent plastic and thinner and cheaper manuals going from original Xbox to 360 to late 360 to One eras. Same with PS2 cases getting rid of memory card holders.

    Oh man, first getting an Asteroids Cabinet and now NeoGeo MVS cartridge collecting. The arcade collecting bug is definitely hard to resist, I currently own a 2-Slot MVS Cabinet and I already want to own more arcade cabinets that I don't have the room to store them nor the time to restore them. Also Puzzle Bobble is the best! On a side note, with Metal Slug 2 there is a fan turbo patch of the game that helps with the slow down that you can use on the original cart if you have an Eprom writer (blog.system11.org/?p=1442), however I have not tried this myself since I don't have a writer, so your mileage may vary.

    1:49 I was not expecting Nero "Padoru" Claudius wearing Terry's hat in this video, but I'm not complaining

    It’s funny you call ‘bust a move’ a dancing game. There was a ps1 game called bust a move in Japan that was a dancing game and had to be renamed to bust a groove when it came to America to not clash with the puzzle bobble’s bust a move title.

    I admire your dedication to boxed games and software, and it's original hardware. A lesser man would get a Pi or FPGA and some roms and call it a day. These things are a piece of history and a noble venture to preserve. Good stuff.

    I have a $1,300 oversized printer that can print those SouthTown Homebrew ShockBox inserts (Epson Style Pro 3880). Got it from Goodwill for $10 and fixed it up. :) Though I have a couple MVS games I haven't done any ShockBoxes. I've been adapting the inserts to AES softboxes for my AES collection instead, which also requires an oversized printer. :)

      Guess I forgot to say: Want I should print you some alternate inserts? ;)
