    Hand-tracking Quest vs Rift S -- the guys over at Adam Savage's Tested interviewed one of the engineers. Hand-tracking on the Quest is implemented in the Quest's DSP rather than processed in software, so it would need a very different solution on the Rift.
    It would probably be phenomenally laggy too.
    The guy said they were working on a PC solution, but only so that developers can build and test their Quest titles in PCVR.

    • @dimiav
      @dimiav 5 лет назад

      They will definitely add this feature to Rift S. And even if not. It's kind of overrated. It's a nice feature to control menus, but gameplay can't be reduced to a small area of tracking plus zero control feedback.

    • @nialltracey2599
      @nialltracey2599 5 лет назад +1

      @@dimiav Overrated? I disagree -- it serves a different purpose from controllers, just as an X-box style controller serves a different purpose from a keyboard and mouse. Hand-tracking is used a lot in VR therapy for non-gamers and to create a better sense of presence. It's also useful in training (again, non-gamers).
      I made a little tech demo of a language learning game using Leap Motion on the desktop, and I'm now considering turning it into a full-blown Quest experience. People loved the simple stuff done with hands -- they picked it up quickly and enjoyed the process.
      Whether it comes to Rift S or not depends on how much DSP they built into it for Insight, and if it has the capacity for the hand-tracking. I suspect that the additional camera means that they're using more DSP blocks than on Quest just running the existing insight tracking.

    • @dimiav
      @dimiav 5 лет назад

      @@nialltracey2599 it's definitely overrated... Especially as based on the Drama surrounds it in matter of all the gamers.
      Quest is targeted mainly for gaming. Everyone who talked about this feature and everything demonstrated was for gaming
      You are talking about niche purpose such as therapy...
      Yes it's a nice feature. But With way too much limitation mainly the very small area tracking.

    AWESOME news, this is what will make VR a whole lot easier to get into and I'm excited to what kind of game's that will take advantage of this great feature. I'm a huge fan of VR and it has become my favorite way to game. There are so many ways this could be applied to game's but I hope they will incorporate things like guns or baseball bats or anything that we use with our hands to give it even more immersion in the VR world. Either way it's a great idea and I know it will only help game developers to use another tool in creating game's of the future. I can't wait to see how far this new technology will go in bringing the VR world to us gamers. Thank's for the video and for keeping us informed and update on what's happening in the VR industry I appreciate it so please keep up the AWESOME work and I'll keep coming back for more and sharing your video's with as many people as I possibly can. 👍💯👍

    As a rift s owner, I was surprised to be left out of such nice technology. I would instantly replace my controllers for experiences like social apps, watching content or dealing with my desktop. It doesn't make sense also considering oculus would be interested on popularizing this technology. I think (hope) it's coming to rift s latter.

    • @truerepz4800
      @truerepz4800 5 лет назад +4

      @@truerepz4800 comparing to the quest sales, you could say that. For me, that still plan to play exclusively on the pc, the rift s is still a better headset. Maybe they will ignore the rift s because of poor sales, or because the tracking technology is too different, or because they want to keep the same features on rift and rift s. Whatever the reason, it's unfortunate to me. But, I can live without hand tracking. Would be nice to have it though.

    • @plukke_b2048
      @plukke_b2048 5 лет назад +1

      Handtracking is obviously a way to make VR cheaper because you have to buy less hardware. So ifcourse they first gonna implement it on their cheapest hardware so they can make their next piece of hardware even cheaper in the hopes to get more sales. Only when it is perfectly implement and does reduce the cost of their cheapest gardware they might try to implement it on the rest. They probably think that those who like to spend alot can just buy a leap motion device for this.

    • @cparoli1111
      @cparoli1111 5 лет назад +1

      @@plukke_b2048 I think hand tracking and controllers are for very different usages. Games (most of them) will always prefer controllers as they give you feedback and have low latency. For navigating on Netflix, browsing, etc, would be preferable hand tracking. Probably most people would not buy a quest without controllers, they would probably go to the oculus go instead.

    • @plukke_b2048
      @plukke_b2048 5 лет назад +1

      @@cparoli1111 one day, hand tracking will be as good as controllers considering latency. Peripherals can give feedback ,the only problem i see is movements without teleport ,you kinda need an analogue stick for that ,unless you wanna talk about treadmills but they wont reduce any cost either.

  • @janred94
    @janred94 5 лет назад +3

    I see this more as a "always around" UI controller, not really for games.
    Like navigating menus and Netflix etc. But I dont think they will be able to "fix" the issues with overlapping hands on this device because it just uses the cameras.
    It is impressive nontheless.

    instead of using hand/finger tracking for actual gameplay there are lots of other things like scrolling a libary or tiping (shown in the video) where i see the most potential for early implementation.
    while gaming u could let go of both controllers if u actually use the strap, so its possible to switch between interaction methods in games. it could be used for small puzzles, crafting menues, lock picking etc. just as part of a game.
    i hope we can use 1 controller for movement and other button input and use 1 hand for finger gestures for ingame interactions like casting spells or playing beer pong

    Because the Rift S is going to be phased out. By next gen a wireless adapter will be more than possible with Wifi 6. Just include an dedicated USB-C dongle Wifi 6 Adapter or make it optional. Why have a Rift and a Quest when you can sell one device that does both? All it does is add more value to the purchase decision. I see gloves or feedback bracelets as their next controller or an add on.

    I felt when the specs were announced for the Rift S and Quest it was semi apparent that their focus was on the Quest. Which makes sense as Oculus has no competition for the Quest, they are the big dog. PCVR though is a saturated market and an expensive one.
    With the announcements this week of hand tracking and link, I see the Quest as potentially the best VR headset you can buy.
    This is just my opinion. But, why would you buy a Rift S now? For an extra camera but lower-res screens and software-driven IPD versus a wireless HMD which could harness your PCs power and open up the Rift catalogue (as long as your PC is VR ready), then throw finger tracking into this mix. So again why would you buy a Rift S?
    The Quest is a leap forward for VR, not a step. It truly has the capacity to attract the casual gamer and steer VR away from the enthusiast hobby it is currently seen as.
    Thanks for the video, mate.

    And I bought the Quest only for PC gaming - played over 200 hours with GearVR + S7 + ALVR before (Elite Dangerous, Hellblade, Subnautica, Robinson the journey, Project cars, ...). After buying the Quest and tried out 6DOF PC gaming with ALVR (new experimental forks only for Quest) I was fully convinced.

    About the hand tracking, is a sad decision about not giving it to the Rift S. The best thing that can happend, is that Vive gives better hand tacking to the Index, Cosmos and Vive Pro, so Oculus would be forced to do provide hand tracking to the Rift S... i think...
    About using it, i think that still lacks some haptic feedback. Maybe some gloves with ir leds over the nails, and some motor in the fingers for the haptics? Anyways, is a nice adition, but not that usefull if the hand and the controller cant be mixed toguether...

    I hope it's that they're trying to sell more quests by releasing the tech there first, giving people a feel for the VR and applications, and then releasing a more polished version for the Rift S, so that it's the logical upgrade path... I mean... getting a quest as a hand-me-down would keep the cycle of VR adoption up!! Step 1: get quest; Step 2: get a PC to use the link; Step 3: upgrade to a Rift S

    • @aarronconleche8468
      @aarronconleche8468 5 лет назад

      But why would someone ever want to "upgrade" to a rift s when the quest has more functionality? I have a VR capable PC and I bought my Quest week 1 and chose the quest over the rift because its portable and i figured that it would eventually be able to connect to my PC, even if not officially. I have zero plans to, and I'm really not trying to come off as hostile it's just my opinion, downgrade to a rift s.

      @@bellabean1597 I think you are right. Tho, I think they will probably keep making a separate Rift headset for those who want that kind of device. Maybe more like a second thought and not their main product tho. I think there is a market for both, but yes, they will probably keep let 3rd parties design the headset and focus on the more mainstream Quest, their goal right now is to get 'critical mass' so business wise it makes sense to focus their efforts toward the quest, a product that let everyone experience vr from anywhere without the need for a powerful computer.

      Promethor well after the link for the quest was announced i think it’s obvious that there isn’t gonna be another rift because the next quest is most likely gonna be a hybrid too but better designed for rift it’s gonna be a mobile headset and also be able to plug into a pc and in a couple years the tech is gonna be ever better than today’s so I think the rift is gone tbh

    • @dathyr1
      @dathyr1 5 лет назад

      I dont feel scammed by buying my Rift S cause of other reasons and it does a great job for my gaming which is SIM Racing, but do agree that the Rift S has always been a lower priority compared to the Quest and has always been looked down on in some ways compared to other VR headsets. I shall wait and see what 2020 has to bring to us in VR world before I will jump on the Quest bandwagon. I originally bought the Rift S to see how LCD displays looked for myself with my games, and found out the majority of the time it was much better than my CV1. Tyriel does a good job of telling the truth about how new VR items work such as LINK and this hand tracking.
