I love this scene, because, a lot of people don't get that Ryan is trying to commit suicide here by purposefully turning off the Oxygen and filling the capsule with Co2. The George is her "concious" or her "will to survive" speaking. He is the voice inside all life, that persist to survive. He is life speaking. I love it. Its a hell of story.

You'd be surprised. The whole film is filled with symbolism like this one that people completely can't see, and don't understand why it won Best Picture. This is a classic example of people thinking she was dreaming or something benign.

I particularly love the "feet on the ground" bit. Watch the movie carefully and the positions of her feet define her entire arc. From the beginning, when they're attached to an artificial platform, to when she's still clinging to that platform even after it's been destroyed and is leading her toward her doom, to when she resolves to abandon it and barely survives the ensuing panic and terror, to when she starts to find more stable but transient footing, to the final scene when she is able to stand up and move forward in her life. It's breathtaking.

But the sad part; you can't wake up after passing out from oxygen deprivation in an enclosed, airtight space like the Soyuz, no matter how motivated and willing to go on you are. There are MANY things in this movie that Ryan would've died from, but miraculously lived through.

when I heard him knock, I was about ready to call bullshit on this movie. but when he ended up being a hallucination, I started to appreciate how important and meaningful the scene is.
life can be tough, very tough, almost unbearable, and sometimes you can't see the shore from the deep waters. but are you going to give up, or are you going to keep on moving? are you going to keep on breathing?
it's a matter of what you do now...it's time to go home.

You know, I remembered this movie this weekend when me and my friends got caught in a rip tide and choppy waters kayaking and paddleboarding in Pensacola Bay. There was terrible wind, and we barely made it back. I was the last one of my friends to get back, because me and my friend switched paddles and I was using the wrong paddle because it was easier for my friend to use the kayaking paddle. I didn’t know that it was nearly impossible to paddle a kayak with a paddle boarding paddle which is single sided. I went through so many throughts, between thinking my friends ditched me, and thinking of leaving my church, thinking of just drowning in the bay, and also thinking maybe I need to try to fight for the people who love me. So I did. I remembered I love my mom, I love God, I love my sister, 2 brothers, I named a few friends who I loved, and you best believe I was paddling so hard that I started yelling out of anger. Angry that I was all alone in the middle of nowhere and practically stuck. I prayed that the Lord would calm the winds and the water down enough so I could be able to get through to the shore at least. And it was only through the Lord’s help that I was able to make it through.

Yeah. Same. It’s that realization. The way Clooney looks her in the eye and then pauses after asking the question. Life can be cruel. Bad things can and will happen from time to time. Sometimes it seems too much to overcome. We all need that kick in the butt. Someone to look us in the eye and say, “I understand your pain. But it’s time to stop feeling sorry for yourself and time to start living again.”

I know it's been 7 months since this comment was posted, but I feel it's worth saying still... the very best you can do is simply be there for them, if they actually decide to come home or be helped. Sometimes a gentle nudge can help someone crashing into rock bottom like that. Or sometimes all it takes is the steady reminder that your love for them is still there, and it's unconditional. No one knows your sister better than you do; you'll know how to reach her.

This is out of left field, but something about how Clooney owned this scene was about as Superman as Superman could be.
He didn’t deny the seriousness of the situation or invalidate what’s happened so far, but with all the charisma in the world still says there is always something you can do to keep going.
I hope I get to see that Superman in the dceu one day, but in this one scene Clooney was the perfect Superman. To me anyway.

DC will have to reboot again for us to get a good Superman, I think. And Clooney would be pretty good

When you watch this scene for the first time in the context of the film, I was like, WTF. Um. I'm not going to spoil it just in case somebody hasn't seen it. But it is an amazing scene. Its right up there with the 6th sense with cole in the car when he's talking to his mother. It's scary and beautiful at the same time.
Whoever decided to put this in the film really earned their money that day

There's a lot of misconceptions about exposure in space. It would have been possible for her to survive as he entered. Shes strapped in so she won't be sucked out. You don't quickly freeze like some people believe. Your body temperature just leaks out. It would take a while. Also shes not naked. She just doesn't have a helmet on so the rest of her body is decently protected from exposure effects. The first thing that would kill someone is suffocating, but she would have survived the time it took him getting in.
It didn't actually happen so who cares, I guess =)

The skin would freeze on the surface, capillaries would burst in eyes, lips, mouth, lungs collapse , eardrums burst maybe. She'd be fine.

Your brain will stop functioning properly after 15 seconds and you will be dead after 1 minute (too much irreversible damage).
Your eyes and mouth will dry out after 5 seconds but without taking damage.
But you will pass out because of pressure loss. Its just too fast.
So basically what Matt would have done here, it would have been possible.

You see, Tina and Amy? He didn't just want to float away and die rather than spend another second with a woman his own age. He came back to Sandra. From the grave, he came back to help her. In fact, his character died, so that the movie could show us the choice Ryan faced, and show us Ryan choosing one path.
