Never thought I would miss the G80…geez this makes it look great by comparison. With no Wrangler or Bronco rival, you would think GM would at least give this some serious off-road hardware.
I really expected more out of the system! I know on other GM trucks with the G80, the brake system only transfers about 20% torque side to side. I figured using an LSD instead of a locker would cause then to make the braking more aggressive.
I completely agree. Top of the line should have all the gear, lockers, suspension etc. They are abusing the decals these days. Z71. Should really mean something, especially at this price point.
The the yukon ELSD comes standard with the tahoe z71 in the middle east standard air ride active response 4wd basically a yukon at4 with the tahoe exterior
There must be efficiency or cost issues with using a Torsen differential in the rear. I think all modern 4wd vehicles should use a Torsen because it would be greatly augmented by the brake based traction systems. Then for the off-roaders use a setup similar to the power wagon rear that is a Torsen and an e-locker.
I looked through the configurator for the 2022 model Tahoe’s and you can now option in the eLSD from Yukon. Seems like the way to go for sure if you want a better off road experience and would improve the poor weather driving as well. The only head scratcher left is how GM is leaving adaptive cruise control off all trims on both the Tahoe/Yukon except for the highest trim level premier/high country for Chevy and Denali for GMC, so if you go Z71/AT4 you are spending 60-70k and still don’t even get an ACC option.
A Tahoe should do just fine for most of the forest service and BLM roads. Once you get into the off-road trails is where it will be at risk for body damage. Thanks for watching!
Great review as usual EA. Kind of a mixed bag, its a great platform for overlanding, awesome out on the streets. How about real lockers front and back GM, the truck could be a monster . The people who buy these trucks just want to press buttons and have a computer figure it all out.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I believe the G86 is the eLSD and I also believe it is the only option on the Tahoe. I wish they did the G80 instead of the G86, but I'm old school.
@@EngineAdventures ok so they do still have it in the trucks that's great to know .I still sport CDS and seems like the technology is becoming a little too much along with the independent suspension ride control air bags , think we all remember Lincoln continentals air ride . be nice to just slide a DVD blue ray into the monitors but I think we both know how the world works , hey I dig the sun roof
For a moment no one made a full sized SUV with a solid rear axle, I'm excluding the Land Cruiser because it's a little smaller. The new Sequoia has a solid rear axle again though!
Yes it did. It now has the twin turbo V6 hybrid system only. No other engine options. I haven't had one to test yet, but I'm looking forward to when I do get the chance.
I don't know what manufacturers are thinking, are they deliberately developing complicated systems and fighting the right to repair so that we can't repair it ourselves and they can make more money? Do the systems just give them more control so they can get that 0.1% efficiency improvement? Either way, I feel like an old man that yearns for a simpler time. I do embrace many technological advancements, but most of it is gimmicky.
It's designed for light to medium offroading. Getting to a fishing hole down a dirt road or that camping spot way up in the mountains. You are correct in that it isn't a recreational off-roader though.
Very true, I recently went on a vacation to Yellowstone and saw probably 4 or 5, 2021 Z71 Tahoes and Suburbans. Despite their price people seem to be buying plenty of them!

It’s surprising that it doesn’t have more suspension flex to cross that washout considering it’s got an off-road package.
I really expected more, especially in the normal ride height!
Does it have trailer brakes
Yes this one did have a trailer brake controller.
I think it’d be interesting to compare the new limited slip to the old G80 side by side.
All three side by side would be good! I do have a video of the Escalade coming up in about a month and it has the elsd
The the yukon ELSD comes standard with the tahoe z71 in the middle east standard air ride active response 4wd basically a yukon at4 with the tahoe exterior
Btw i tested the MLSD on the tahoe if you want it to engage faster touch the brake pedal it will engage immediately
@@aal-m3545 Thanks for the tip!
I expected as much after watching the TFL video months ago. Dirty secret is that GMC has the better differential.

Thanks for the informative video, we are planning to go to Utah with a Tahoe and it might be some off road.

Thanks for watching and commenting! I really enjoyed the Tahoe, but why not stick with the G80 at the very least?
Getting the gmc at4 can't wait for the rig to get to me. Watching TFL seems like the elsd seems to be a lot better then the G80.
Congrats on your purchase! I have a Cadillac Escalade video that will be out in about a month. It had the ELSD and it performed pretty well.
Very informative video. Is the G86 the same thing as the eLSD or are they 2 different systems? If so, are both available on the Tahoe?
Thanks for watching and commenting! I believe the G86 is the eLSD and I also believe it is the only option on the Tahoe. I wish they did the G80 instead of the G86, but I'm old school.
💙 my satin steel 2021 Z71
Thanks for commenting and I'm glad you love it!
Do these use the same diff as in the new Escalade?
I can't say for sure, but I believe it is.
All 4wd SUVs must have optional 2 diff locks (Front +Rear), equipping SUV with a diff lock does not cost much on a production line.
We can only dream!
@@EngineAdventures I hope that your dream becomes reality soon.. 🙏
Which is the stronger off-road performance of Z71 or Land Cruiser?
I haven't driven the LC300, but the LC200 is significantly more capable than the Tahoe Z71.
Any Lifter/Pushrod issues yet with the 21 5.3L?
I only had the vehicle for a week. Sounds like a supplier issue that GM quality control didn't catch.

Once I heard the g80 was leaving I sort of lost little faith in GM
They still use it in their trucks, and my guess is that will continue.

@Me La Pelan It's Toyota, so hopefully it's reliable, but I've had problems with their hybrids in the past, especially in cold weather.
For Expedition seems to be the way to go here
I like the interior of the Tahoe and Yukon more, but the Expedition is definitely more capable off road
@@EngineAdventures I am excited to see the new 2022 Expedition Timberline. It seems Ford has a rebuttal for the lacking interior from the GM cousins.
That was my biggest disappointment when I found out it doesn’t have the very least a g80 that doesn’t deserve a z71 badge
