- Trying to explain how time powers in the Mortal Kombat games work - as used by Geras or Kronika - by using the magic system I created, detailed in the linked video, below:

I'd like to be the reminder to everyone in the comments that this is all pure fun speculation and fan theorizing. It's highly likely time was just added for the sake of plot, keep in mind the 4 elements are fun to talk about but don't take it too seriously because inevitably it won't fit everything everything. He even joked about this in the elements video when he mentioned Kabal using magic for his abities as the cannon explanation from MK9.
It is fun to speculate, but this is for sure the hardest one to explain 🤣 it's less a theory and more a philosophy in my perspective. Time was just abruptly added in both MK9 and 11 so it makes sense why it's the hardest to explain.
Also, I apologize for my oversight but I thought I had subscribed since the elements video. That mistake has been corrected, looking forward to your video work, Warlock :)
Pinned!
You sound like my future mod.
P.S.
Appreciate the sub.
The fact that this comment was necessary is a microcosm of what makes me angry in this world.
Unironically, this video made the fact that Fire God Liu Kang beat Kronika more believable. This also says that Liu Kang is the most proficient user of time magic. I love how accidentally good mk's power system is.
So what you are saying is that Kronika has got that Thicccness and it's electric. Got me blushing over here. lol

If you ask the swamp benders from the last airbender they say time is an illusion
Top comment right here. Wish I included that, in the video.
oh damn you're right
Oh shit I like this so much.
It's only fitting that Time, being a compound of Sand (Earth+Air) and Lightning (Fire+Air+Water) should have TWO counts of Air since that is the element Kabal manipulates to increase his speed, but he certainly isn't fast enough to travel through time (we don't talk about him warping space in one of his MK11 fatalities, shhh).
MK11 really dove off a cliff with some of this stuff, didn't it?
But kabal gets his boost(energy) for his speed through his gas which can somehow be translated to smoke element
@@Binx1363 That's actually a cool explanation for it. Who knew Kabal's just a heroin addict?
For real though, that way we actually have a second Smoke element user.
@@CynicalWarlock yh so we have only 2 smoke users

Me too. I already have a bucket of sand; now I just have to wait to get struck by lightning.
@@CynicalWarlock That, and I’ll likely need to find a way of controlling this element so I don’t at best get stuck in the past or future, and at worst, accidentally erase myself from existence.💀🕰️

It loves you back.
Nice. I didn't even know MK had time abilities. It was interesting hearing you explain how it worked.
My ramblings have evolved to a new level.
@@CynicalWarlock I do like your ramblings though. I may not be able to know what is happening but your explanations are quite well done.
In the MK Power system video, you mentioned that Blood is Ground + air + water, Skarlet being a Blood user
So what about Havik? Sure, he removes limbs and blood so that's probably the same but he can also remove his head and heart, in that sense, he's immortal in a way, how does Havik's power work? And if he's actually immortal, how does immortality work?
It is probably more suitable for soul practitioners. He can come back from the dead on his own. And his whole chaos thing can be also stretched here somewhat.
Havik could be a mixture of Blood, Soul, and possibly Illusion. The chaos part stems from his mastery over blood magic. Also, his is more refined than Skarlet’s. As she only knows what Shao taught her.
Everyone in this thread is on to something. I initially pegged Havik as "Blood and guts", as a joke, but there's some truth to that - his abilities extend far beyond Blood manipulation. Using limbs and immortality both fall more in line with the Soul element, since a person's soul includes their whole body (hence using/re-growing limbs) and Soul users can achieve immortality by practicing it.
So it looks like Soul, but a much more crude form of Soul manipulation. Almost like a Blood user who's desperately trying to become a Soul user, but is either not good at it or is just dipping his toes and impatient to try more.
I also like the possibility of another element or force at play. Since his abilities are so unorthodox and he can survive without a heart (pretty sure Soul users can't do that), I really like the idea of Havik being able to manipulate entropy, i.e. the amount of decay or randomness in a given thing (in this case, himself). So maybe he can use that, in conjunction with Soul/Blood, to reverse his entropy/decay level, and stop himself from dying from.. pretty much anything. Wounds, time, diseases etc.
Hm... Might do a full video on him.
I wouldve said time is time but the way you broke it down was much better
have my like
The irony is that you're the one who's right.
Well, the gates to hell opened. Video about the elements discussion was so on point, so it captures the author in hostage.
The compound elements being mixed and giving new results is a dangerous way to get out of hand. Every system gets to crumble under too much attention, because we are not gods, and are not perfect. This decision will bring some problems, despite of giving so much opportunity.
P.S. hot take. Compound elements create modern day technologies to work as they are in the universe. So Jax, Jacqui and Stryker become technological earth benders, and cyborgs become their own thing, manipulating soul bending with technologies.
Don't worry about the gates of hell - I have a remote.
Plus, if you look at the rest of my channel, you'll realize that nothing holds me hostage.
@@CynicalWarlock yeah, I hope on that.
You get glass
A "timeless" material
Eh?
Hourglass, even.
Funny, considering Kronika turned into a crystalline statue when she was defeated. Only dying when Liu Kang shattered her
I think “energy manipulation” would be a good one to add to the system
What doesn't count as Energy?
Fire and Lightning are both just energy
Motion is also energy so there goes water and earth
To be fair, me and one of my friends used this justification in reverse.
We have basic elements like this western four (water, air, fire, earth), but the essentials are four of more difficult (time, space, energy, matter). There is also information as additional one and reality as combinationf of all five, but it is for other settings. So, there can be any justification for any, even the most vague sources of powers, if the system is complex enough.
That's just Force, which is Reptile's elemental compound
@@kovobanga1559 That's actually a cool system. Water/air/fire/earth limit you to controlling matter just in those respective states, while more advanced people can go beyond that and manipulate broader physics concepts, like time and space.
Only thing I'd change is I'd lump energy and matter together since, from a physics standpoint, they're the same thing.
Cool idea.
Yes, @ClericOfPholtus has the right idea: all of these elements - basic or kompound - are different forms of energy. Everything in the universe is energy and space.
But building on your idea, you can have "energy manipulators" be hyper-advanced elemental practitioners that can manipulate energy on a fundamental level. They can turn one element into another, or turn various forms of energy (kinetic, heat, solid matter) into whatever the hell they want.
Or the classic Asian Qi energy; that's another option.
Please do a vid showing how much stronger hellfire is compared to normal fire, and how character power scaling lines up with this.
I mean I'll consider it.
Define normal fire? Most fire user are conjuring it magically anyhow cept folks like sector and Bo rai cho. Lui Kangs fire abilities was hinted to maybe have a connection to onaga even.
The fact you can combine various combinations of elements is just interestingly epic .
A bit over-complicated, perhaps, but great for lore-building.
Maybe it’s either A total free manipulation of chaos and Order or B it’s fusion with the magical sand in the hour glass.
Something something.

So interestingly enough I really like the sand being tied to time because we see erron black who we know is magically not aging and he's a sand user.
So again it accidentally fits.
Although I'd probably say that because time is really to space-time and therefore motion the 10 users are capable of controlling matter at a much smaller and finer level than other users of Earth which might be how they get to time rather than having to combine it with lightning. Because if you were able to stop the motion of matter you would be effectively stopping time just like how we talk about with absolute zero being basically no molecular movement
That's such a neat find about Erron, even if it's just symbolic.
And yeah, if I understand your theory correctly, if the particles you control are small enough, you can influence spacetime. Which, coincidentally, is the premise for Avengers: Endgame, since they used the quantum realm to time travel.
I'd like to point that the Hourglass, as stated be Fire god Liu Kang, manipulates time *and* destiny.
This would mean that higher mastery of time manipulation enables destiny manipulation.
This makes sense given base Geras power set.
They're kind of one and the same, no?
Nice explanation because I was stumped and I would've just had the video be like see how all this time stuff messes with the lore 😂😂.
This also reminds me of X-Men 97 where storm had made glass from sand and lightning and with some of Geras' move you can see that glass shatter effect so maybe that also helps with your theory
No it definitely messes with the lore; not a fan of time travel in MK.

damn youre brilliant
Or unhinged.
One or the other.
We have already established that shadow let's you change the density of objects and since the elements that conform it are the same as sand, they might have the same ability.
Almost.
Sand = Earth + Air
Shadow = Earth + Water
But good point, both of these deal with density, so there's obvious crossover. And it makes sense, cause you have Earth and oxygen - only hydrogen is really missing, to make water.
How do you describe Sonya's ring toss? In most games it was thought to be her inner chi manifesting in her projectiles. What is your opinion?
Looks a lot like Force, to me, and I think it's even named that way, in older games, like MK4, where it was a legit force ball, instead of rings.
The newer games portrayed it as some kind of laser tech on her wrist, which I kind of like, since I like the idea of her being mostly just a normal human being. Makes her seem even more badass, for competing with all these superpowered freaks. Kinda like Stryker.
But both interpretations are valid - why should Johnny be the only one to develop Force and Shadow skills?
@@CynicalWarlock yeah and even if the tech thing they are not specific. Like what if her gauntlets help harness her inner chi and allow her to harness it easier with the tech. Because she can still use kiss of death. There is definitely some dormant albeit weaker inner chi abilities there. Especially in the old timeline as for a short period she was trained by lui kang who apparently taught her her version of his bicycle kick as well as taught her how to get in touch with her inner chi as he can do.
@@musicislyfe1672 I actually love Sonya's vertical bicycle kick, in MK4. And the chi explanation definitely fits the best in that game, cause get force/fireball looks very mystical.

The idea of double compound elements to be super rad.
It also makes me think Tsang Sung (or however you spell it) has FAR more potential than just soul magic.
That's true. Haven't looked at all of his abilities from all media yet; perhaps he already exhibited some kind of spell or power that looks like a double-kompound already.
@@CynicalWarlock would you consider his weird hell skulls a non soul power? If so then he's already been shown to use various portals to summon exploding bodies, helpers who drag you. He pushes you into a weird lava pit for his back grab in mk11 (eugh, that game) but all of these seem to be tied to some sort of basic fire magic or perhaps some limited control of illusory portals? The potential very well is there. I love the idea because of how he's been supposedly groomed for this role for all his life and how he has the potential to be one of if not the greatest champion of good. Only if his skills and ease of which he controls the elements were applied correctly.
@@YaGirlGumption His 2 main elements are definitely Fire and Soul. Illusion is likely on the menu too. He also conjured some kind of spikes in mk11?
And yeah, I'll do a video on Shang, at some point; your past phrase is the best part about this character: one of Earthrealm's best warriors, groomed to be the best, and ended up tryna damn it. And it's reflected in his powers too - he was supposed to master the selfless, Shaolin style of Soul manipulation, and ended up mastering its dark side instead, becoming the most infamous soul stealer in all the realms.
Man I am so excited. Your formula for videos is absolutely perfect. I'm excited to see what else you got for the future!
Huh! I was gonna suggest time could've been air/earth + Force in that matter was literally being forced to go forward or back it's trajectory within time. I do like this lightning angle a bit more though.
Well the elements in Force are also in Lightning (Fire/Water), so your theory feeds into mine.
Huh, I almost it was gonna be wind because that's how Kabal travel with super speed, and Wind + Sand seens like an obvious combination, manipulating sand through wind and stuff like that.
It's all fair game, but it's tough to rationalize wind turning back time, in my head.
@@CynicalWarlock I think is with hourglass logic, like, the amount of sand that is in a hourglass calculate the time, if you can control sand through wind, and put more sand into another part or something like that, you control time. Idk, having creative for this is hard.
sand + lightning = glass, the hourglass
Funny how that works.
Maybe also light element plus lightning plus sand
Yeah cause speed of Light.
What other "double compounds" exist? Also, why haven't we seen anyone use a combination of fire and earth?
We have. Tremor and Hotaru.
Fire + Earth = Lava
Still thinking about other double-kompounds, but I'll make a video on them, at some point.
😊
The name combined compoinds should be "Compunded Compounds"
Sounds kinky.
Air+Earth being Sand works nicely into the system, and if we add fire to it we get Glass, since when you superheat sand it becomes glass. Although I can’t think of anyone who uses glass. Sand and lightning broken down is each of the 4 elements but 2 parts air, so theoretically could Geras use Soul, or is Time the byproduct of all four elements kombined in a specific way
That's way too deep down the fanfic rabbit hole, for me.
But good point about the glass.
Is Ashrah Fire and Shadow or is there something else going on with her. Something to do with the neatherealm?
Her moves remind me of Liu Kang's Dualist variation, from MKX. They're clearly going in the same direction with Ashrah, cause of the whole light and darkness theme. Liu's light and dark attacks behaved a lot like Fire and Force, respectively.
Light implies heat, so that's basically fire; and he had a healing spell, similar to Kotal's sun ray, which is also fire (the sun is a literal ball of fire).
The dark attacks behave a lot like Reptile's Force balls, popping enemies up in the air.
What about haviks ability to heal or his chaos? Would he count as blood or something else?
I thought of Blood, initially, but given that he straight up regrows entire limbs and apparently can't die, I'd say he's a very crude Soul user. Or a Blood user who's tryna cross over into Soul manipulation, cause Soul deals with the entire body - when you steal a soul, the victim crumbles to almost nothing, so you take literally everything. And Soul stealers like Shang are immortal, so that part fits too.
Havik might also have some understanding of how to manipulate entropy (probably a Chaosrealm thing) and that's partly what makes his abilities look so bizarre. He's destroying and reversing himself, kinda like in Tenet.
@@CynicalWarlock damn thats bitchin
I am once again asking how Reiko fits into th power system
Tough to say. All his moves in MK1 look fairly normal/physical, in nature, apart from the subtle red glow, which could be a minor use of Force, to enhance his power (Dualist Liu Kang's dark stance attacks have a similar red glow, and behave a lot like force attacks).
Good lord man, how do you find and compile so many relevant clips lol do you use AI?

So he has control over 4 elements that is? Thus he can use almost any technique you described includind soul magic, but chooses only sand and time, not even lightning. On the opposite, Cetrion has visible power over 4 elements, but chooses not to combine them into more advanced stuff? Everyone of them is sooo picky now aren't they?)
Yes and no. Raiden can use Lightning and only Lightning. Knowing one kompound doesn't automatically mean you know to use its constituent elements. Still have to practice every element/combination independently. Think that's only fair.
@@CynicalWarlock Yes but how is it that he can use only lightning, how did he come up to it? In avatar movie if you use lightning then surely you can use fire, because practicing it gave you mastery over lightning in the first place. When channeling lightning from 3 elements, Is he just doesn't know what he is doing, so he can use just lightning?
@@Nemchick Good point. Depends on the user. Rain, for instance, actually uses only Water, but indirectly causes Lightning to happen, by controlling the water and friction in clouds. Sub-Zero, on the other hand, inherited specific genetics, so he can only use Water below its freezing temperature. Raiden's ability could also be genetic, or maybe he does have some Air, Water, and Fire ability, just enough to unlock Lightning and specialize in it.
@@CynicalWarlock Well, I can say you one thing, you can't throw everything on genetics or something like that, because it would be just like in the original story without needing a power system, everyone SO special) Also Frost uses cryomancy too and she is not genetically connected to Sub-Zero.

Yeah no, time is just the measurement of motion. It's not a substance. It's not a tangible essence that exists in something. It's simply what happens when objects in 3D space relocate. If there was no motion at all, the concept of time would cease to have relevant meaning. An observer near a massive object in space would experience the passing of time differently from an observe outside of that object's gravitational horizon. So clockrates differ, depending on where you are in space. Nonetheless, both observers would still exist simultaneously and in the same timeline. One just happens to be moving faster than the other one. But one is not in the past or future of the other. There is no rational way to explain how time manipulation works in a Mortal Kombat game. This is where you have to suspend your scepticism, and just roll with it, for the purpose of entertainment and fun. I have no idea why you're talking about sand and lightning, but it's obviously nonsensical, with all due respect. An hour glass does what? It keeps time. That is; it measures the passing of specific units of time. Units of time that we use are usually based on natural phenomena: the cycle of the sun, the positions of the moon and the stars and constellations, or the beating of a pulsating neutron star. Basically, the sky contains a giant clock that provides us with all of these units we can use to subdivide the passing in time, for our own convenience. The hourglass has a consistent rate at which some amount of sand passes through a tiny hole, until one side is empty and the bottom half is full. That's all it does. It let's you know how much time passes. Other than that; the sand has no influence on the passing of time. You could look at it the other way around. Time is measuring the movement of the sand. Neither the sand, nor a black hole, nor Kronika the Keeper of Time, can manipulate the passing of time. In fact, all of these are subject to the passing of time. They don't cause it, they're bound to it. It's a peculiar thing, because the entire universe and everything that exists in it, actually only has any real existence in the present moment, while the present moment is such a fleeting concept that you can't even pinpoint it. And yet, the present moment is all you ever experience. Here's something worth reflecting on: the whole universe is in a constant state of emerging and being annihilated, because the past doesn't exist anymore, and the future isn't extant yet. The past doesn't exist. Think about that. You can't get hit by a car that drove by your house a week ago. You can't see the past positions of the sun in the sky. You can't see the earth as a continuous blue and green streak spiralling back in space. Why not? Because all you experience is the existence of the world in the present moment. As soon as the present moment passes, all things and how they were (i.e. their positions in space relative to one another, and their essences and incidental characteristics), all cease to be. What this actually implies, is that the whole universe and everything and everyone in it, is constantly coming into existence anew, and being annihilated, and coming into existence, and becoming naught, etc., etc., etc. That is the constant and fluent creation of the universe from nothing, since it emerges out of nothing, as its future states don't exist yet. Time then is the present moment, and pertains to the real existence of it all: the "now" is all that exists, for as far as we have access to it. Of course, we can go back in time in our minds, and we can see past positions of distant celestial objects, simply due to the distances involved and light having to traverse those distances before reaching our eyes. But that applies even to your own hand when you hold it up infront of your face. It takes time for you to see your hand, and for your brain to process the information. That's why the present moment is such a difficult concept to grasp. Because you can't actually grasp it properly. It will always be just out of reach. You're always just catching up, even though your actual existence is bound to it. The sand in the hourglass is just symbolic of the passing of time, and of the ongoing creation of the world. For what is creation but dust particles carried upon the divine wind of time? Matter in motion. Time only exists because the world keeps coming into existence in subtly new states and forms. If this process stopped, then there'd be no more passing of time, for as far as created observers are concerned. Time manipulation in a game like MK could perhaps better be explained as a combination of extremely localized gravitational manipulations and trickery and illusion. But even that necessitates suspending disbelief. It's much easier to simply accept it as a motif, as a fantasy element, as a means to entertain and stimulate the imagination.
Absolutely true, this video is just popularly requested gibberish. There's a cool documentary on Netflix, called "A Trip to Infinity", that visualizes and explains some of what you wrote, in a pretty cool way. Not only is the universe in a constant state of birth and death, it's all a finite experience. It will happen an infinity of times, in every possible way, with every possible permutation, until infinity becomes 0 again. And then start over.
Your last point doesn't make sense, however; to consume Mortal Kombat content - or any kind of fiction - is, in itself, the practice of suspending disbelief. As is this video.
@@CynicalWarlock I think the suspension of disbelief pertains, above all else, to the idea of manipulating the passing of time. Other aspects could be explained. Scorpion's teleportation, for example, while seemingly sci-fi, might become a real thing in the future. We 'teleport' information already; it's what our computers do. It happens at the speed of light. It's like, when you're watching a football match, live, and Ronaldo kicks a ball when the microphones are nearby; you watching the game at home would hear him kick the ball before the people in the stadium do, because the information of the sound travels to your home at the speed of light, while in the stadium, it's traveling at the speed of sound. So it will reach your ears faster than it reaches the folks in the stadium. It's plausible that this transformation of data, in the (near) future, could deconstruct and reconstruct actual matter: 'teleporting' physical objects across (large) distances. So yeah, you suspend your disbelief, but some of these things can be explained, and could, theoretically, become a reality.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching videos like this. I guess I just really disagreed with your explanation of time-manipulation. I know it wasn't meant to be very serious, but I just wanted to add some points in this regard. I'll check out the Netflix documentary you mentioned! Sounds interesting.
@@XaeeD All good. In terms of actual suspension of disbelief, I like the Mass Effect side of the spectrum. While obviously flawed, the idea of manipulating the mass of objects to make them travel at faster-than-light speeds is pretty imaginative, and they made so many other concepts neatly fit into that framework.
And yeah, I liked that documentary quite a bit.
