He is a winger. Great footwork. Excellent finishing. 12 put too much pressure on him to get the ball out wide. Which doesn't come naturally to his game apart from offloading.

But he got left behind by Fainganuku who is criticised as having not quite enough top end speed for an international winger. What it really comes down to is, like Marshall, he came over too late, and did not get the time to be grounded at lower grades. I think he missed all of his first season with Auckland due to covid disruptions to the comp, which was unfortunate. Also does not have the kicking game to go with Fullback, which probably is his best position in most other ways. That is also a weakness to a lesser extent at 2nd five, and also for a winger who has to cover fullback at times. Combination of issues. Not saying he should not have played league, but if he had stayed with rugby right through he would have developed that kicking game. Nonu certainly did, he could not kick at the start.

NZs ridiculous obsession with players being able to play more than one position is a bigger problem in my opinion. Why did we stop picking specialists? Look at all the best teams right now and they all pick specialists. We’re so hung up on first fives being able to cover fullback and midfielders that can cover outside backs and back rowers that can cover ever back row position and even lock, like???? Pick players in their positions and stop mucking around! Like why is Ardie still playing 8??? He’s too small bro, he gets dwarfed when he comes up against players like Valetini, Aldritt and Wiese. But he’s the best 7 in NZ by a mile and we don’t play him there. Can’t wait for next year man, this 4 year circus is finally going to be over.

Personally I leave him on the bench if there are any other 8s specialist playing better than him at the moment which sadly no one. I agree, no matter how exceptional a League player you cannot expect them to switch code overnight without the appropriate game time and support, it seems desperate to do that so close to a World Cup. It also send a signal to other Union players that they are not good enough. I see why Ian Foster and Eddie Jones do it but it is not only a gamble, it is a cheap fix. How can you convince your players that your team is more important than the individual after that? Added to the amount of pressure you put on that League player to deliver because everybody's told he is the next SBW or Folau. You raise people's expectations, you better deliver. And Tuisava-sheck will never return to Union so it is time and resources wasted. Are there really no capable number 12 in the whole of New Zealand rugby union? I would doubt so unless they are all injured.

When I hear a former All Blacks saying "I think he will win us the World Cup" talking about one player, that's when I understand maybe the ABs are not quite the tight unit they once were. There are lot more talks about individuals than there is about gameplan and how these individuals fit in. I hear John Kirwan "here is the key, this is your team" but did it ever happen for the ABs? The strength of the All Blacks has always been that whoever comes into the fore - playmaker included - with their own specific qualities this would not disturb the gameplan. That's what was so impressive about the ABs, this continuity, perfection and speed of execution. And Ireland is doing that now, it is not an improvising force, it is a well oiled machine based on Leinster. When Stade Rochelais found the crack, there was no capacity to improvise. So does it mean you leave it to your bench and impact players or does it mean your team should have a plan B and the nature of your bench should accommodate that plan? ie these are not your keys, you borrow that Ferrari but you never owns it. During the successful years of the All Backs, the Crusaders were that well oiled machine and the Hurricanes, Chiefs and Highlanders were almost like plan B. Carter was not improvising outside patterns, he would follow exactly what Merthens was doing before him only with his own skills. The ABs were a copy of the Crusaders. But there was little improvisation, the last All Blacks 10 I have seen playing outside pattern was Carlos Spencer and it probably cost him the 10 jersey at the end. But that's not the ABs footprint, so I am very curious to see the transition between these three playmakers and whether the tactical approach will change from the last northern tour. Now, would Galthie swipe Jalibert for McKenzie? I don't think he would and I would not either.

Rugby union needs TLC its so needed there's to many stars on set and not enough unity kotahitanga starts with players understanding and respecting the value of being apart of a team and not taking 1 for the team to boost your ego. All Black's are not as spirited as a team as they once were in the 90s early 2000s its very sad and somewhat damaging to the ABs brand as it puts more added pressure on the ABS to do greater when in actuality they haven't been doing as good Rugby Union is in decline me thinks there's bn a huge shift in our tradition and whenua that people will rather prospect in other popular fast growing sports teams that will offer greater value and opportunity overseas, I've noticed we have more casual sports fans taking up league and MMA here so something more engaging there for them elsewhere it really comes down to the approach top down bottom up there needs to be a change in the long term. I miss the old All Black's from 95 to 2007. Ka aroha.

    1. SBW = Off-load FREAK !!! His strength = Centre who destroys and and sucks in 2 tacklers and still off-loads.
    2. Nonu = Another FREAK !!! Low-centre of Gravity + Strength and acceleration and speed. Game winner that try in RWC final vs Aus solo by him epitomizes his contribution.
RTS not like those 2 at all. He has amazing footwork but is not a physical beast so should not be centre. But if the AB's already have incredible talent in the Wings and Full-Back... = He has not place in Rugby Union ABs. It's that simple.
Irrepective, of the Union perspective, I've been watching the Warriors this season in the NRL: They've been brilliant and more entertaining and awesome to watch than ALL the super league teams in Union. League has so many good attributes especially NRL and Warriors have such a bright future imho: For RTS, his best bet is to light up using his footwork in League where there's more space and opportunity for him to do so. He'll now have a battle to get a starting place!

I suspect his lack of starts for the AB's at 10 is more to do with RM & BB being ranked ahead of him & the time he has spent playing in Japan which made him ineligible for AB selection rather than perceived defensive frailties.

In Union, at centre you have to be a lot bigger physically to punch the gain line. That's not his game nor size. AB's are loaded on the wings and Full-Back needs a kicker and receiver more than a runner in the modern game. He does not have a place in the ABs as a consequence.
